Introduction to 2018 Eurpean Film Festival

The 10th anniversary of European Film Festival 2018 brings with it new promises to offer outstanding experience for Sudanese public to enjoy European cinema in Sudan. This year is a special year for the festival, as it marks the success of 10 years of European Union commitment to enrich the cultural life in Khartoum. I felt so honored with my team when invited to organise this version of the festival, and share my visons and plans with the EU delegation in Sudan to make it a remarkable event.

In Sudan, cinematography has been developed as an art due to many projects run by European countries in Sudan like Germany and UK. We have witnessed in few years emerging of talented Sudanese cinematographers producing interesting projects, but we still aspire to explore more opportunities to create an organized cinema industry.

Our plan for this year focused in engaging audience of different spectrum in this festivity, conveying a clear message that, the festival welcomes everyone. Starting by taking the opening ceremony out of the premises of the EU into a public place “The Friendship Hall” which represent an iconic and historical venue for cinema in Khartoum. To introducing a mobile Cinema so European Films are accessible for everyone.

Because we believe cinema exercises a great influence on the mind of the people, and play an impactful role in changing the society , we open the door for young professional cinematographers to come together and discuss different issues concerning cinema industry in Sudan in a one day seminar.

As a cultural manager , I feel so privileged to work for the next few years with the European Union in Sudan and the European cultural institutes for A creative Europe and Sudan ,through cinema and other cultural projects , and enable cinema again to play its role in influencing people’s life in Sudan.

The festival is celebrating Sophia Loren as the special character of the festival and an icon of European cinema . The embassy of Italy partici-pated with three films for Sophia Loren that will be screened in different venues so people can enjoy some of the golden era films .

Sofia Villani Scicolone, (born September 20, 1934, Rome, Italy), Italian film actress who rose above her poverty-stricken origins in postwar Na-ples to become universally recognized as one of Italy’s most beautiful women and its most famous movie star.

Her career was launched in a series of low-budget comedies before she attracted critical and popular attention with Aida (1953), in which she lip-synched the singing of Renata Tebaldi in the title role. Inter-national recognition for Loren’s distinguished acting career included a lifetime achievement Oscar (1991) and a career Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival (1998). She also made headlines in the 1990s for her strong defense of animal rights. In 2010 she received the Japan Art Association’s Praemium Imperiale prize for theatre/film. Loren’s beauty often overshadowed her enormous talents as an actress, but her earthy charisma is evident even in such early works as Vittorio De Sica’s L’oro di Napoli (1954; The Gold of Naples). With Ponti’s help, Loren increased her international visibility by appearing in Hollywood films opposite such major stars as Cary Grant (Houseboat, 1968), Clark Gable (It Started in Naples, 1960), and so on . Such exposure was undoubtedly instrumental in helping her win an Academy Award (Oscar) for best actress in De Sica’s La ciociara (1961; Two Wom-en), in which she delivered a powerful performance as the courageous mother of a teenage girl during World War II.
