Best of Me...Gena TurpinBest meal (cooked by you or byanother):Definitely has to be any mealcooked by my mum. My brotherand sister and I were very fortunateto have the best home cookedmeals prepared for us as childrenand I like to think I carry on thispractice for my husband and I athome…. Although I’m not sure it’squite as good as mums!.
Best outfit or single piece ofclothing:
My tutu and my vans – not worntogether! Although that would most
certainly make an interesting outfit!
Best memory:I can’t choose so please can I have2…..? My 7 years of living in CapeTown, South Africa, best time of mylife and the best place to have myteenage years. My recent bestmemory is my wedding day back in2011. We got married in GretnaGreen and everything was justperfect and how I wanted it since Iwas aged 10!
Best way to spend the day:Isle of Man: Chilling in the sunshinewith a good bottle of rose and good
food (cooked by mum!). Or in Floridaat Universal studios (best place onearth!)
Best advice:Something I recently learnt fromWayne Sleep: ‘If your heart’s in itand you’re determined…..you’llmake it!’ I hope that I successfullypass this attitude onto my pupils. Best place in the Isle of Man:The Sound café with my husbandand family eating the café’s seafoodchowder (scone for dessert) lookingout to the Calf of Man…..bliss!
I live in Lower Foxdale with my husband, James and two dogs; Missy and Tarka-Bear. I am a Dance Teacher and run Gena’sDance Academy in Peel training over 200 dancers (Aged 2 ½ +) per week in ballet, modern, tap and street dance. I loveanything pink, girly and glittery!

Beaches are getting cleaner – thanks to the buddies!Manx beaches arecleaner than they havebeen for years. That’s the conclusion of BeachBuddies, the group set up toorganise volunteers to help tidy upthe Island’s many beaches.During the past year, an increasein volunteer support by 1,200 saw1,900 bags of rubbish collected, arecord number of cleaningsessions and cleaner beaches as aresult. The group’s annual reportdescribes 2013 as a ‘landmarkyear’.‘First, and foremost, it was theyear in which the Isle of Man’spublic spirit came to the fore withmore than 1,600 differentvolunteers joining in the numerousteam sessions all over the Island (a1,200 increase on 2012).‘The support of the volunteers hastransformed the effectiveness ofbeach cleaning and has givenBeach Buddies a platform as asustainable organisation which cannow go forward for the long-termfuture. The support of themagnificent volunteers who haverisen to the challenge during 2012and 2013 cannot be stressed morestrongly.
‘They have been the backbone tomaking a real difference to the Isleof Man’s environment and thesafety of seabirds, wildlife andmarine animals, with the addedbonus of giving the Islandexceptionally clean beaches forthe benefit of everyone, includingvisitors.’Last year also saw good workingrelationships established betweengovernment, local authorities, ourvolunteers and the corporatesector, enabling Beach Buddies tooperate on a larger scale and raisegreater awareness.‘The litter on the beaches of theIsle of Man has been left largelyignored for many years, but areliable and effective system oftackling this problem now existsthrough this effective workingrelationship, with Beach Buddiesnow frequently being identified asthe group which can effectivelytackle litter “hotspots”, not just onbeaches, but also glens, footpathsand walkways.’But the storms at the start of thisyear present fresh challenges.‘The impact of severe weatheraround the turn of the new year2014 has left the Isle of Man’sbeaches with some areas hugelyaffected with unprecedentedamounts of litter. In the early
months of 2014the worst affectedbeaches will be thetarget for BeachBuddies’volunteers, and itis expected to takethe best part oftwo to threemonths for this tobe effectivelycompleted.’
The group offersbeach cleaningadvice and practical sessions forschools an other groups and haspledged support for litterawareness campaigns.
It hopes to expand its operation, but more funds will be needed.
‘It is clear that significant andsubstantial financial support isneeded if Beach Buddies is toexpand further and take onprojects such as glens, footpathsand walkways - and even roadsidelitter.’
While the government offers‘practical support’ the grouprecognises it is not realistic toexpect further governmentfunding.
‘Further, the problem of litter allover the Island, and especially thebeaches, is a problem created not
by government, but by the public;therefore, Beach Buddies operatesas a group of volunteers from thepublic determined to tackle aproblem created by the public.’The report adds the future ofBeach Buddies is ‘very positive’.‘The system of encouraging teamsof volunteers from across thecommunity has been proved to beextremely effective and efficient. The evidence is to be seen all overthe Isle of Man. Beaches are inbetter condition than for decadesand the future target of being ableto claim that the Isle of Man hasthe cleanest beaches in Britainlooks very much achievable duringthe coming 12 months.’For more information aboutBeach Buddies, [email protected]

How to deal with the dreaded lurgy
I am suffering as I write this.No doubt some of you encountersimilar feelings as you read it.I am reeling from the effects of athroat infection, which appears tohave taken over my head and turnedit into a large marshmallow with anangry elf trying to push its way out. This is not pleasant, but I don’t wantanyone to break out the violinsThe advantage of giving opinions inthe written word, as opposed to inthe broadcast media, is that whenyou lose your voice, you can soldieron. Although, right now, I’m thinkingthat if I’d been able to drop an emailto Broadcasting House saying ‘Sorry, voice gone, here’s a tape of Axl Rosediplomatic speeches to play instead’,I would be quite happy.Anyway, here are some things tobear in mind to help you cope withillness.• If you are male and suffering
severe symptoms of a cold, it isnot sexist for others to refer toyour ailment as man-flu.
• You may have lost your sense ofsmell as a result of the illness, butothers most probably haven’t. Tryto get into the shower every nowand again.
• If you live at home with other
family members, they will, at somestage, all develop the symptomsof whatever virus or sniffle lurgyyou have. Except for one, who willhave the unenviable task ofrunning around after everyoneelse. They will collapse fromexhaustion shortly after yourecover.
• You will seem to remember thateven the most severe cold, whenyou were younger, only lasted afew days. This doesn’t relate to lifenow, although think that is noreason to stay off sick when youcould go into the office, extract nosympathy, get in people’s way andspread germs before someonefinally sends you home.
• A really bad cold or similaraffliction is a good time to ‘bury’bad news. I remember my motherdiscovering an unreturned librarybook that I’d denied having, whenI was laid up with tonsillitis. Even ifI was told off, I was too feverish toremember. Result. So it’s always agood time to admit you forgot topost the mother-in-law’s birthdaycard.
