In 2011, an international manufacturer of brakes and suspension products for commercial vehicles reviewed health-related claims data for its U.S.-based employees. The InfoLock® data painted a picture of fairly significant health risks:

41 percent of health plan members had more than one chronic condition.

The most common chronic conditions identified were back pain, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and neck pain—many of which could be improved through lifestyle choices.

30 percent of members had no paid claims during the reporting period, potentially pointing to a lack of preventive visits.

In addition to these health risks, the client faced a number of cultural and logistical challenges:

The workforce was scattered across multiple locations across the country.

Not all employees had computer or Internet access.

Levels of engagement across the leadership team were inconsistent.

Many employees seemed resistant to change.

The organization’s leadership team saw clear opportunity for improvement and worked with their Lockton Health Risk Solutions team to design a program to overcome these challenges and address the specific health issues of its employees. The initial phase of their program was focused on building a culture of health from the ground up.

Well-Rounded Wellness Program

After thorough analysis of the data, Lockton recommended the organization select a third-party vendor to provide the platform for their program. With support from Lockton and the selected vendor, the organization designed a data-driven program that included the following elements:

 Secure online wellness portal

h Health risk assessments (HRAs)

h Biometric screenings

h Telephonic health coaching

h Targeted behavior programs (for example, tobacco cessation, weight management and cholesterol management)

 Quarterly health challenges

 Online health tools and resources

On-site fitness classes, lunch ‘n learns and wellness events

 Fitness center reimbursement

This employer understands the

importance of staying the course and

continuing to invest in the health of

its employees.

Incentives Encouraged Participation

To influence employee participation, the Health Risk Solutions team from Lockton helped the organization design a unique incentive structure. Incentives were provided when the employees participated in a variety of activities:

 Enrolling in a program

 Making measurable improvements to health

 Ongoing program participation

 Sustaining good health

The organization created a variety of incentives to ensure they appealed to a diverse employee audience, including the following:

Health insurance premium differential for those employees who participated

 Health savings account contributions

 Cash bonuses

 Paid time off

 Gift cards

 Raffle prizes

Wellness Committee Champions a Healthy Cause

To foster employee acceptance of the new focus on health in the workplace, the organization created a wellness committee. The committee includes employees from all levels, across all locations. Committee members participate in monthly meetings, where they develop initiatives for a healthy workplace. They plan and implement activities for their individual locations. They also conducted a needs and interests survey with all employees to help determine topics, programs and events that have the highest chance of success.

Employee Logo Contest

Employees were further engaged in the new wellness program through a logo contest to brand the program. They were encouraged to submit ideas for a logo, which symbolizes the employees’ ownership of the new program. Today, the winning logo is the cornerstone of the program’s brand identity and is used by their wellness program vendor on all communications and materials.

Targeted Communications

With employees scattered across multiple locations, a tiered approach to communication was required. To keep engagement high and employees focused on making healthy decisions, the following communications tactics were implemented:

 Targeted, personalized wellness messages

 Weekly bulletins

 Monthly e-newsletters

 Wellness updates and announcements

Driving Participation

At the outset, the company set an aggressive participation goal of 75 percent. In the second year of the program, participation levels fell slightly short of that goal.

Company leadership understood, however, that reaching a high participation rate would take time as employees became accustomed to the wellness requirements. With coaching from their Lockton team, they designed the following program changes to drive increased participation:

Increased premium differentials for those who participate vs. those who do not

Offering small rewards throughout the year

Rollout of new rewards for the next program year to sustain interest and engagement
