Le but de ce manuel est de fournir aux pilotes d'hlicoptres un glossaire des mots et de la phrasologie anglaise en matire aronautique.
Bien que serrant de prs la ralit des procdures sur hlicoptres, toutes les situations envisages dans ce livre sont fictives : frquences, altitudes et points de report, orientation des pistes et certains types de message qui ne constituent que des exemples.
Par ailleurs, CE FASCICULE EST AVANT TOUT UN DOCUMENT D'INSTRUCTION, la procdure anglaise officielle tant dfinie par le Commandement Air des Forces de dfense arienne. En cas de divergence, il convient donc de se reporter systmatiquement la procdure dite par ce Commandement.

Air Traffic Control Clearance. Authorization by an Air Traffic control Unit for an aircraft to proceed under conditions
specified by that unit.
Air Traffic Control Instructions. Directions issued to a pilot by an ATC Unit relating to the conduct of a flight.
Air Traffic Services. - Flight Information Service A service provided for the purpose of giving advise and information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flights.
- Air Traffic Advisory Service. A service available within advisory airspace to provide separation between participating aircraft operating on IFR Flight plans.
- Air Traffic Control Service. A service provided for the purpose of :
1 - Preventing collisions. a) between aircraft in the air, and b) between aircraft and other aircraft or obstructions on the manoeuvring area.
2 -Expediting and maintaining a safe and ordrely flow of air trafic.
ATS-Route. A specified route designated for channelling the flow of traffic as necessary for the
provision of air traffic services.
Note : The term ATS route is used to mean variously, airway, advisory route, controlled or uncontrolled route, arrival or departure route, etc ...
Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS). Transmissions containing the following weather, QNH, Runway in use, and any other
relevant information.
Approach Control Service. Air traffic control service for arriving or departing IFR flights.
Air Traffic Services Units. Flight Information centre. A unit established to provide flight information service and alerting service.

Air Traffic Control Units.
- Aerodrome Control Unit : A unit established to provide air traffic control service to aerodrome traffic.
- Approach Control Unit : A unit established to provide air traffic control service to IFR flights arriving at, or departing from, one or more aerodromes. - Area Control Centre : A unit established to provide air traffic control for IFR flights.
- Air Traffic Control Centre : The term used in the United Kingdom to describe a unit combining the fonctions of an area control centre and flight information centre.
- Air traffic-Control Radar Unit : An Air Traffic Service Unit which uses radar equipment.
Airway. A control area, or part of a control area in the form of a corridor an marked by radio
navigational aids.
Alternate Aerodrome. An aerodrome specified in the flight plan cohere a flight may proceed when a landing at
the intended destination becomes inadvisable.(Note : An alternate aerodrome may be the aerodrome of departure).
Altitude. The vertical distance of a level, point or object considered as a point, measured from mean
sea level.
Base Turn. A Rate 1 turn executed by the aircraft during the intermediate approach, between the end
of the outbound track and the beginning of the final approach track during a D/F approach. These tracks are not reciprocal. (Note : This term and definition is included tentatively as experience may show that its use operationally tends to be confusing). Base turn may be designated as being made either in level flight or while descending, according to the circumstances of each individuel instrument approach procedure, the only restriction being that the MDH not be infringed.
Circling Approach. An approach during which an aircraft manoeuvres, outside of the 30 arc of the centreline
of the active runway, in order to achieve a suitable position from which it can continue with a visual approach.
Clearance Limit. The point to which an aircraft is granted an air traffic control clearance.
Controlled Airspace : An airspace of defined dimensions within which air traffic control service is provided to
IFR flights.

- Control Zone. A controlled airspace extending upwards from the surface of the earth.
- Control Area. A controlled airspace extending upwards from a specified height.
- Terminal Control Area. A portion of a control Area normally situated at the confluence of airways in the
vicinity of one or more major aerodromes.
Controlling Obstacles. The highest obstacle relative to a prescribed plane within a specific area.
Cruising Level or Level. Generic terms used for a level maintained during a significant portion of a flight. (Note :
These terms are intended to include any method or means of determining the vertical position of an aircraft. A cruising level will normally be expressed as altitude, height, or flight level according to the altimeter setting procedure in force).
Decision Height (DH). The height at which a missed approach must be initiated unless the required visual
references have been established and the aircraft is in a suitable position to continue with a visual approach.
Estimated Time of Arrival. For IFR flights, the time at which the aircraft is estimated to arrive over that designated
point, defined by reference or navigation aids, from which it is in-.ended that an instrument approach procedure will be commenced, or, if no navigation aid is associated with the aerodrome, the time at which the aircraft will arrive over the aerodrome. For VFR flights, the time at which the aircraft is estimated to arrive over the aerodrome.
Expected Approach Time. The time at which it is expected that an arriving aircraft will be cleared to commence
approach for a landing.
Final Approach. That part of an instrument approach procedure in which alignment and descent for landing
are accomplished. It begins at the final approach fix or point and ends at the missed approach point or fix. In a precision approach the final approach is deemed to commence at the glide path intercept point and this has been called the final approach fix or point.
Holding Procedure. A predetermined manoeuvre which keeps an aircraft within a specified airspace while
awaiting further clearance.

Initial Approach. The part of an instrument approach procedure in which the aircraft has departed an initial
approach fix or point and is manoeuvring to enter the intermediate or final approach. It ends at the intermediate fix or point or, where no intermediate segment is established, at the final approach fix or point.
Instrument Approach Procedure. A series of predetermined manoeuvres for the orderly transfer of an aircraft under
instrument flight conditions from the beginning of the initial approach to a landing or to a point from which a landing may be made visually.
IFR Flight. A flight conducted in accordance with the Instrument Flight Rules.
Instrument Meteorological conditions. Meteorological conditions expressed in term of visibility, distance from cloud, and ceiling
less than the minima specified for visual meteorological conditions.
Intermediate Approach. That part of an instrument approach procedure in which aircraft configuration, speed and
positioning adjustments are made. It blends the initial approach segment into the final approach segment. It begins at the intermediate fix or point and ends at the final fix or point.
Landing Success Rate. The probability of completing a successful touch-down after an instrument approach to a
specified height.
Minimum Descent Height (MDH). The lovest height to which an aircraft may descend until the required visual references
have been established and the aircraft is in suitable position to continue with a visual approach.
Minimum Flight Level. In order to ensure safe vertical separation between aircraft flying at the transition altitude
and those flying above, the minimum flight level is to be 500 ft above the transition level.
Minimum Sector Altitude. The lowest altitude which may be used under emergency conditions which will provide a
minimum clearance of 300 metres (1000 ft) above all obstacles located in an area contained within a sector of a circle of 25 nautical miles radius centred on a radio aid to navigation.
Missed Approach Point-(MAP). That point in an instrument approach at or before which the prescribed missed approach
procedure must be initiated in order to ensure that safe obstacle clearance is accomplished.

Non Precision Approach. An instrument approach using a procedure which does not employ electronic glide-slope
information.
Obstacle Clearance. The vertical distance between the lowest authorized height for flight and a prescribed
surface within a specific area.
Obstacle Clearance Altitude/Height (OCA/H). The lowest altitude (OCA), or alternatively the lowest height above the elevation of the relevant runway threshold or above the aerodrome elevation as applicable (OCH,), used in establishing compliance with appropriate obstacle clearance criteria.
Obstacle Clearance Limit. The height above aerodrome elevation below which the minimum prescribed vertical
clearance cannot be maintained either on approach or in the event of a missed approach.
Precision Approach. An instrument approach using a facility which provides both azimuth and electronic glide-
slope information.
Procedure minimum. The lowest Decision Height (DH) or Minimum Descent Height (MDH) authorized for use for the procedure.
Procedure Turn A manoeuvre in which a turn is made away from a designated track followed by a turn in the opposite direction, both turns being executed so as to permit the aircraft to intercept and proceed along the reciprocal of that designated track.
A Procedure Turn Left. Is a manoeuvre involving an initial turn of 450 to the left followed, after an appropriate
interval (normally one minute), by a turn of 1800 to the right to intercept the designated track.
A Procedure Turn Right. Is a manoeuvre involving an initial turn of 45 to the right followed, after an appropriate
interval (normally one minute) by a turn of 180 to the left of intercept the designated track.
Protected Range Limit if reliability of TACAN, DME and VOR. Given in nautical miles and thousands of
feet.
NOTE : Civil Authorities use the term Designated Operational Coverage (DOC).

Purple Airway. Purple" airspace is temporarily controlled airspace, established to provide special
protection for Royal flights in fixed wing aircraft in which additional rules for air traffic and compulsory instrument flight rules, apply at all times and in all weathers..
Radial. A magnetic bearing extending from a VOR/VORTAC/TACAN.
Range Departure Time. The time at which an aircraft is required to leave the radio range station at the lowest level
of the holding stack to start its approach under radar sequencing.
Required visual reference. The minimum external visual cues associated with the runway environment which must be
in view before a visual approach may be started.
Special Rules Area. An area within a FIR/UIR, extending upwards from a Flight Level or specified altitude to a
specified upper limit within which aircraft are required to comply with air traffic control instructions.
Special VFR Flight. A VFR Flight authorized by Air Traffic Control to operate within a control zone in IMC or
at night, but not subject to instrument flight rules.
Transition Altitude. The altitude in the vicinity of an aerodrome at or below which the vertical position of an
aircraft is controlled by reference to altitudes above mean sea level or height above the aerodrome depending on whether QNH or QFE is set on the altimeter.
Transition Layer. The airspace between the transition altitude and the transition level. The depth of this layer
will normally be insignificant, and will in any case never exceed 500 ft.
Transition Level. The lowest flight level above the transition altitude. It will vary in accordance with the
relationship between the QNH and the standard pressure datum.
Visibility. The ability as determined by atmospheric conditions and expressed in units of distance, to see and identify prominent unlighted objects by day and prominent lighted objects by night.
Visual Approach. A descent in an airfield environment using external visual cues as the sole means of
achieving vertical and horizontal alignment with the potential touch-down point.

Visual-Meteorological-Conditions. Meteorological conditions expressed in terms of visibility, distance from cloud, and
ceiling, equal to or better than specified minima.
5.2 - T H E H 0 L D I N G
INTRODUCTION In order to cope with continuous IFR arrivals at an airfield it has been found necessary to
devise a race-track holding pattern in which ac may be held whilst they await their turn to commence an approach. Ac may be "stacked" at various altitudes/Flt levels within the holds which are, broadly speaking, of 2 types :
a) The en-route hold. The en-route hold is used to keep ac clear when a particular sector/area/zone is unable
to accept additional traffic for the time being. Unless shown otherwise on en-route charts etc, such holds are standard 4 min RH holds orientated on the inbound airways QDM to the fix (which may be a radio facility or a reporting point).
b) The let-down hold. The let-down hold is a pre-landing procedure which not only allows inbound ac to be
held, awaiting their clearance but also keeps the ac in a "safe" block of airspace. This latter point allows, when necessary, descents to occur in the hold whilst keeping the ac over known terrain.
NOTE : Because of the increasing congestion of controlled airspace, some holds are not necessarily orientated on a radio facility and the holding fix may be designated by intercepting radials or radial and DME arcs.
DEFINITIONS
- EXPECTED APPROACH TIME (EAT) :
EAT is the EARLIEST time that an ac may leave the fix prior to commencing an approach.
- FIX : The "fix" (in relation to holding) is the datum upon which the hold is established and via
which an ac may normally enter or leave the hold. It is usually marked by a radio facility eg NDB, VOR etc. but may not always be so.

- THE ICAO HOLDING
The holding is defined as follows :
The standard holding is RH although some holdings may be specified as being LH. Max bank angle is 25 or Rate 1 equivalent which ever is the least.
5.3 - RADIO PROCEDURES
"READ-BACK".
All read-backs should be in the same order as 'transmitted and should be concluded with the ac callsign. The following messages should be read back in full :
a) LEVEL CLEARANCES HEADING INSTRUCTIONS AIRWAYS OR ROUTE CLEARANCES CLEARANCE TO ENTER/CROSS AN ACTIVE RUNWAY SSR INSTRUCTIONS ALTIMETER SETTINGS VDF/UDF INFORMATION FREQUENCY CHANGES
Pilot acknowledgement of any of the above without a comprehensive readback should not be accepted by a controller. Similarly, the pilot is expected to request that the above items are clarified if any are not fully understood.

b) Other ATC executive instructions should be read back in an abbreviated form and concluded with the ac callsign.
POSITION REPORT Position reports (when required) should be given as follows :
AC CALLSIGN POSITION TIME OVER the position FLT LEVEL or altitude NEXT POSITION and TIME over the position.
NOTE : The ATCC/ATSU may ask pilots to omit position reports or ask for others at non-standard reporting points.
"DETAILS" and "ROUTE" Certain services provided by an ATSU require information from the pilot before the
service can be given : eg FIS, Airways joining, MATZ penetration, LARS etc.
Pilots should contact the ATSU and state their intentions in brief : eg - "Oscar India Juliet 52 to join airways at Daventry".
The ATSU will then respond and ask the pilot to pass his "DETAILS" and/or "ROUTE". the ATSU controller will then expect :

EN-ROUTE HOLDING
Pilots are required to report in the following way : a) The time and level of reaching a specific holding point to which cleared :
eg "London Control, Oscar 52, Daventry at 05 Flt level 70".
b) When leaving a holding point : eg "London Control, Oscar 52, leaving Daventry at 15"
c) When leaving and assigned level for another one : eg "London Control, Oscar 52, leaving flt level 70 for 50".
FILING AN AIRBORNE FLT PLAN
Usually filed throught the FIR controller (10 mns min notice for entry into CA or SRA/SRZ). Establish contact and then use the magic phrase :"I WISH TO FILE AN AIRBORNE FLT PLAN".
The message should include the adressees and follow the normal flight plan format.
MAYDAY
The CAA specifv the following MAYDAY format : MAYDAY x 3 Name of station addressed (if applic) Callsign and type Nature of emergency Intentions Present position, flt level/altitude, hdg.
PAN
As for Mayday except of course PAN x 3, plus the instrument rating of the pilot. (RAF crews should state full procedural or non-procedural rating as applicable).
DEPARTURE CLEARANCE PHRASES
The following phrases have specific meanings
a) "CLEARANCE EXPIRES AT ... (Time)". Indicates that if you are not airborne by the time stated then you will have to obtain
another clearance.
b) "TAKE OFF NOT BEFORE ... (Time" Allows you to decide the best time to start up.

c) "UNABLE TO CLEAR AT ... (Planned level). This is given when your requested level is not available and an alternative is usually
offered.
d) "JOIN AIRWAYS AT ... (place and level)". "NOT BEFORE ... (Time)". Used when an airways clearance is given to an ac departing from aerodrome outside
