To reduce the risk ofserious injury in a

collision, always drive and ridewith your seatback upright andthe lap belt snug and low acrossthe hips.

Safety belts must be wornby all vehicle occupants to

be properly restrained and helpreduce the risk of injury in acollision.

Seating and safety restraints

Page 64: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

To prevent the risk ofinjury make sure children

sit where they can be properlyrestrained.

It is extremely dangerousto ride in a cargo area,

inside or outside of a vehicle. Ina collision, people riding in theseareas are more likely to beseriously injured or killed.

Do not allow people toride in any area of your

vehicle that is not equipped withseats and safety belts.

Be sure everyone in yourvehicle is in a seat and

using a safety belt properly.

AIR BAG DESCRIPTIONThe air bag system activates incollisions more severe than hittinga parked vehicle of similar size andweight head-on at about 45km/h(28 mph).

The air bag system consists of twoparts:

• The driver air bag in the middleof the steering wheel and thepassenger air bag near the glovecompartment.

• The electrical system, made upof impact sensors, a diagnosticmodule, and a backup powersupply.

The diagnostic module monitors itsown internal circuits and thesupplemental air bag electricalsystem readiness (including theimpact sensors), the system wiring, the air bag system readiness light, the air bag back up power, and theair bag ignitors.

The air bags inflate within afraction of a second after air bagsensors detect a severe frontalcollision. Gas generators within theair bags fill the air bags with anon-toxic, non-flammable gas. After the vehicle occupants havecontacted the air bags, the gasempties through holes in the air

Never let a passenger holda child on his or her lap

while the vehicle is moving. Thepassenger cannot protect thechild from injury in a collision.

Always follow the instructions andwarnings that come with any infantor child restraint you might use.

If possible, place children in therear seat of your vehicle. Accidentstatistics suggest children are saferwhen properly restrained in rearseating positions than in the frontseating positions.

CHILDREN AND SAFETY BELTSChildren who are too large forchild safety seats (as specified bythe manufacturer of your childsafety seat) should always weartheir safety belts.

Follow all the important safetyrestraint and air bag precautionsthat apply to adult passengers inyour vehicle.

If the shoulder belt portion of acombination lap and shoulder beltcan be positioned so it does notcross or rest in front of the child’sface or neck, the child should wearthe lap and shoulder belt. Movingthe child closer to the center ofthe vehicle may help to provide agood shoulder belt fit.

If the shoulder belt cannot beproperly positioned:

• Move the child to a seat with alap belt only.

Engine block heater (ifequipped)

To prevent electricalshock, do not use your

engine block heater withungrounded electrical systems ortwo-pronged (cheater) adapters.

Engine block heaters are stronglyrecommended if you live in aregion where temperatures reach-23°C (-10°F) or below. An engineblock heater works by warming theengine coolant. This improvesengine starting by warming theengine faster. Engine block heateroperation also allows the heaterand defrost system to respondmore quickly than usual.

BRAKES

The anti-lock brake system(ABS)Anti-lock brake operation differsslightly from standard brakeoperation.

Apply the brakes steadily. DO NOTpump the brakes in a panic stop. The brake system will preventwheel lockup by automaticallyreleasing and reapplying thebrakes.

Even with ABS, the brakes couldlock up on roads with alternatingslippery and dry patches or withloose surfaces such as snow orgravel. Be careful when braking.

The ABS conducts a self-test eachtime the vehicle is driven. Amechanical noise may be heardwhile the system conducts itsself-test.

Occasional brake squeal duringlight to moderate stops is normal.Significantly increased squeal is anindicator that brake service isneeded.

After driving through standingwater, gently apply the brakesseveral times to dry them.

If driving down a long or steep hill, shift to a lower gear and do notapply the brakes continuously.Continuously applying the brakeson a hill could overheat them andmake them less effective.

Driving

ABS warning lightThe ABS light in the instrumentcluster illuminates and remainsilluminated if an ABS fault isdetected. Have your vehicleserviced as soon as possible.

Normal braking operation is stilleffective unless the light isalso illuminated.

Parking brakeThe parking brake should be usedwhenever the vehicle is parked.

Push pedal downward to set theparking brake.

The light in the instrumentcluster illuminates and remainsilluminated (when the ignition isturned to ON) until the parkingbrake is released.

Always set the parkingbrake fully and make sure

that the gearshift is securelylatched in P (Park).

The parking brake is not designedto stop a moving vehicle. However,if the normal brakes fail, theparking brake can be used to stopyour vehicle in an emergency.Since the parking brake appliesonly the rear brakes, the vehicle’sstopping distance will increasegreatly and the handling of yourvehicle will be adversely affected.

1 - Low Use 1 (Low) to providemaximum engine braking on steepdowngrades. Upshifts can be madeby shifting to 2 (Second) or to

D (Overdrive). Selecting 1 (Low)at higher speeds causes a shift to 2(Second), and will shift to 1 (Low)after vehicle decelerates to theproper speed.

Brake-shift interlockThis vehicle is equipped with abrake-shift interlock feature thatprevents the gearshift from beingmoved from P unless the brakepedal is depressed.

If you cannot move the gearshiftout of P with the brake pedaldepressed:

1. Apply the parking brake.

2. Turn ignition key to LOCK, thenremove the key.

3. Insert the key and turn to OFF.

4. Apply brake pedal and shift to N(Neutral).

5. Start the vehicle.

If it is necessary to use the aboveprocedure to move the gearshift, itis possible that a fuse has blownand the vehicle’s brakelamps maynot be operating properly. Refer toFuses and relays in the Roadsideemergencies chapter.

Driving

101

Page 102: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

Do not drive your vehicleuntil you verify that the

brakelamps are working.

If your vehicle gets stuck in themud or snow it may be rocked outof the spot. To rock the vehicleout, shift between forward andreverse gears in a steady rhythm.Press lightly on the accelerator ineach gear. Do not rock the vehiclefor more than a few minutes, because it could damage thevehicle.

Do not spin the wheels atover 55 km/h (35 mph).

The tires may fail and injure apassenger or bystander.

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE (AWD)SYSTEM (IF EQUIPPED)Your vehicle is equipped with afull-time All-Wheel Drive (AWD)transfer case. Power is constantlysupplied to all four wheels througha transfer case. The AWD system isfull-time and has no externalcontrols.

The AWD transfer case utilizes aviscous clutch that distributestorque to the front and reardifferentials (approximately 35%front and 65% rear). The viscousclutch is filled with a high viscosityfluid; see Lubricant specificationsfor more information.

All utility-type and AWD vehicleshave special design and equipment

Driving

102

Page 103: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

features to make them capable ofperforming in a wide variety ofoff-road applications. Specificdesign characteristics give themhigher centers of gravity thanordinary passenger cars.

Utility and four-wheeldrive vehicles are NOT

designed for cornering at speedsas high as passenger cars anymore than low-slung sports carsare designed to performsatisfactorily under off-roadconditions. Avoid sharp turns orabrupt maneuvers in thesevehicles.

DRIVING OFF ROAD WITH ALL-WHEEL DRIVE (AWD)Your vehicle is specially equippedfor driving on sand, snow, mud,and rough terrain and hasoperating characteristics that aresomewhat different fromconventional vehicles, both on andoff road. The following informationwill help you learn to properly useAWD.

When using AWD, maintainsteering wheel control at all times, especially in rough terrain. Sincesudden changes in terrain canresult in abrupt steering wheelmotion, make sure you grip thesteering wheel from the outside.Do not grip the spokes.

Drive cautiously to avoid vehicledamage from concealed objectssuch as rocks and stumps. You

Driving

103

Page 104: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

should either know the terrain orexamine maps of the area beforedriving. Map out your route beforedriving in the area. For moreinformation on driving off-road,read Four-Wheeling in yourowner’s portfolio.

SandWhen driving over sand, try tokeep all four wheels on the mostsolid area of the trail. Do notreduce the tire pressures but shiftto a lower gear and drive steadilythrough the terrain. Apply theaccelerator slowly and avoidspinning the wheels.

Mud and waterIf you must drive through highwater, drive slowly. Traction orbrake capability may be limited.

When driving through water, determine the depth; avoid waterhigher than the bottom of the hubs(if possible) and proceed slowly. Ifthe ignition system gets wet, thevehicle may stall.

Once through water, always try thebrakes. Wet brakes do not stop thevehicle as effectively as dry brakes.Drying can be improved by movingyour vehicle slowly while applyinglight pressure on the brake pedal.

After driving through mud, cleanoff residue stuck to rotatingdriveshafts and tires. Excess mudstuck on tires and rotatingdriveshafts causes an imbalance

Driving

104

Page 105: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

that could damage drivecomponents.

If the transmission and transfercase are submerged in water, theirfluids should be checked andchanged, if necessary.

All rear axle lubricants must bereplaced every 160,000 km(100,000 miles) or if the axle hasbeen submerged in water.Otherwise, check the lubrication ofthe rear axle according to theintervals in the Service Guide.

Driving on hill or slope terrainWhen driving on a hill, avoiddriving crosswise or turning onsteep slopes. You could losetraction and slip sideways. Drivestraight up, straight down or avoidthe hill completely. Know theconditions on the other side of ahill before driving over the crest.

When climbing a steep hill, start ina lower gear rather thandownshifting to a lower gear froma higher gear once the ascent hasstarted. This reduces strain on theengine and the possibility ofstalling.

When descending a steep hill avoidsudden braking. Rapid pumping ofthe brake pedal will help slow thevehicle and still maintain steeringcontrol.

When speed control is on and youare driving uphill, your vehiclespeed may drop considerably, especially if you are carrying a

Driving

105

Page 106: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

heavy load. If vehicle speed dropsmore than 15 - 25 km/h (8 - 14mph) the speed control will cancelautomatically. Resume speed withaccelerator pedal.

If speed control cancels afterclimbing the hill, reset speed bypressing and holding the SETACCEL button or returning toprevious speed by pressing theRESUME button (to resumespeeds over 50 km/h [30 mph]).

Automatic transmissions may shiftfrequently while driving up onsteep grades. Eliminate frequentshifting by shifting out of

D (Overdrive) into D (Drive).

Driving on snow and iceAn AWD vehicle has advantagesover two-wheel drive vehicles insnow and ice but can skid like anyother vehicle.

Avoid sudden applications ofpower and quick changes ofdirection on snow and ice. Applythe accelerator slowly and steadilywhen starting from a full stop.

When braking, apply the brakes asyou normally would. In order toallow the anti-lock brake system(ABS) to operate properly, keepsteady pressure on the brakepedal.

Allow more stopping distance anddrive slower than usual. Considerusing one of the lower gears.

If the vehicle is stuck, shift thetransmission in a steady motion

Driving

106

Page 107: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

between forward and reversegears. DO NOT rock the vehicle formore than a few minutes. Thetransmission and tires may bedamaged or the engine canoverheat.

Do not spin the wheels atover 55 km/h (35 mph).

The tires may fail and injure apassenger or bystander.

VEHICLE LOADING

It is extremely dangerousto ride in a cargo area,

inside or outside of a vehicle. Ina collision, people riding in theseareas are more likely to beseriously injured or killed.

Do not allow people toride in any area of your

vehicle that is not equipped withseats and safety belts.

Be sure everyone in yourvehicle is in a seat and

using a safety belt properly.

Before loading a vehicle, familiarizeyourself with the following terms:

• Base Curb Weight: Weight of thevehicle including any standardequipment, fluids, lubricants, etc. It does not includepassengers or aftermarketequipment.

Driving

107

Page 108: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

• Payload: Combined maximumallowable weight of cargo, passengers and optionalequipment. The payload equalsgross vehicle weight rating(GVWR) minus base curbweight.

• GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight):Base curb weight plus thepayload weight (includingpassengers, cargo, and optionalequipment). Remember, theGVW is not a limit or aspecification.

• GVWR (Gross Vehicle WeightRating): Maximum total weightof the base vehicle, passengers, optional equipment and cargo. The GVWR is specific to eachparticular vehicle and is listedon the Safety ComplianceCertification Label on thedriver’s door pillar.

• GAWR (Gross Axle WeightRating): Carrying capacity foreach axle system (front andrear). This amount is specific toeach particular vehicle and islisted on the Safety ComplianceCertification Label on thedriver’s door pillar.

• GCWR (Gross Combined WeightRating): Maximum combinedweight of the towing vehicle(including passengers andcargo) and the trailer. TheGCWR indicates the maximumloaded weight that the vehicle isallowed to tow.

Driving

108

Page 109: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

• Maximum Trailer Weight Rating:Maximum weight of a trailer thevehicle is permitted to tow. Themaximum trailer weight ratingequals the vehicle curb weightfor each engine/transmissioncombination, any requiredoption weight for trailer towingand the weight of the driverfrom the GCWR for the towingvehicle.

• Maximum Trailer Weight:Maximum weight of a trailer theloaded vehicle (includingpassengers and cargo) ispermitted to tow. It isdetermined by subtracting theweight of the loaded towingvehicle from the GCWR for thetowing vehicle.

• Trailer Weight Range: Specifiedweight range that the trailermust fall within that ranges fromzero to the maximum trailerweight rating.

Remember to figure in the tongueload of your loaded trailer whenfiguring the total weight.

If the GVWR or the GAWRspecified on the Safety

Compliance Certification Label isexceeded, your vehicle may bedamaged or you may lose controland injure someone.

To obtain correct weights, trytaking your vehicle to a shippingcompany or an inspection stationfor trucks.

Driving

109

Page 110: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

Do not use replacement tires withlower weight capacities than theoriginal because they may lowerthe vehicle’s GVWR and GAWRlimitations. Replacement tires witha higher weight limit than theoriginals do not increase theGVWR and GAWR limitations.

TRAILER TOWINGYour vehicle may tow a Class I orII trailer provided the maximumtrailer weight is less than or equalto the maximum trailer weightlisted for your engine and rear axleratio. See the Trailer towing tablelater in this chapter.

Do not exceed the maximum loadsstated on the Safety ComplianceCertification Label. Refer toVehicle loading for a definition ofthe terms on the label.

Your vehicle’s load capacity isdesignated by weight, not byvolume, so you cannot necessarilyuse all available space whenloading a vehicle.

Distribute the trailer load so thatonly 10 to 15% of the total weightof the trailer is on the tongue. Tiedown the load so that it does notshift and change the weight on thehitch.

Towing a trailer places anadditional load on your vehicle’sengine, transmission, axle, brakes, tires and suspension. Inspect thesecomponents carefully before andafter any towing operation.

Driving

110

Page 111: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

If the GVWR or the GAWRspecified on the Safety

Compliance Certification Label isexceeded, your vehicle may bedamaged or you may lose controland injure someone.

Towing trailers beyond themaximum recommended

gross trailer weight exceeds thelimits of the vehicle and couldresult in engine damage,transmission/axle damage, structural damage, loss ofcontrol, and personal injury.

Calculating the load yourvehicle can carry/tow1. Use the Safety ComplianceCertification Label to find the axlecode number and engine type foryour vehicle.

2. Use the appropriate maximumGross Combined Weight Rating(GCWR) chart to find themaximum GCWR for your typeengine and rear axle ratio.

3. Weigh your vehicle as youcustomarily operate the vehiclewithout cargo. To obtain correctweights, try taking your vehicle toa shipping company or aninspection station for trucks.

4. Subtract your loaded vehicleweight from the maximum GCWRon the following charts. This is themaximum trailer weight yourvehicle can tow and must fall

Driving

2To determine the maximum trailer weight designed for your particularvehicle as equipped, follow the section Calculating the load your

vehicle can carry/tow earlier in this section.

Preparing to towUse the proper equipment fortowing a trailer, and make sure itis properly attached to yourvehicle. See your dealer or areliable trailer dealer if you requireassistance.

HitchesDo not use or install hitches thatclamp onto the bumper or to theaxle. Underbody hitches areacceptable if installed properly.

The rear bumper has an integralhitch and only requires a ball witha 3/4 inch shank diameter. The

Driving

112

Page 113: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

bumper has a Class II rating (1590kg/3500 lb trailer weight and 159kg/350 lb tongue weight).

Safety chainsAlways connect the trailer’s safetychains to the vehicle. To connectchains when towing with the stepbumper, cross the chains under thetrailer tongue and allow slack forturning corners. Connect thechains to the holes in theunderside of the hitch plate for aClass II frame mounted hitch.

When using a frame mountedtrailer hitch, attach the safetychains to the frame mounted hitchusing the recommendationssupplied by the hitchmanufacturer.

Trailer brakesTrailer brakes are required onmost towed vehicles weighing over680 kg/ 1500 lb. Use electricbrakes or manual, automatic, orsurge-type hydraulic brakes thatmeet Federal and local regulations.Install and adjust the brakesaccording to the manufacturer’sinstructions.

Do not connect a trailer’shydraulic brake system

directly to your vehicle’s brakesystem. Your vehicle may nothave enough braking power andyour chances of having acollision greatly increase.

Driving

113

Page 114: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

Trailer lampsTrailer lamps are required on mosttowed vehicles. Make sure yourtrailer lamps conform to Federaland local regulations. See yourdealer or trailer rental agency forthe proper instructions andequipment for hooking up trailerlamps.

Do not hook the trailerlamps directly into the

vehicle’s lighting system wiring. If the trailer lamps are notinstalled properly, the warninglights in the instrument clustermay not work properly.

Driving while you towDo not drive faster than 88km/h(55 mph) while towing a trailer. Donot drive faster than 72 km/h (45mph) while towing in hilly countryor on hot days.

Speed control may shut off if youare towing on very long, steepgrades.

When towing a trailer:

• Use D (3rd gear) rather thanD (Overdrive) while towing up

or down steep hills. This willeliminate excessive downshiftingand upshifting for optimum fueleconomy and transmissioncooling.

• Anticipate stops and brakegradually.

Driving

114

Page 115: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

Servicing while towingIf you tow a trailer for longdistances, your vehicle will requiremore frequent service intervals.Refer to the Service Guide formore information.

Trailer towing• Practice turning, stopping and

backing in an area beforestarting on a trip to get the feelof the vehicle/trailercombination. When turning, drive slightly beyond the normalturning point so the trailerwheels will clear curbs andother obstacles.

• Allow more room for stoppingwith a trailer attached.

• The trailer tongue weight shouldbe 10-15% of the loaded trailerweight for a Class I or II rearbumper hitch.

• After you have travelled about80 km (50 miles), thoroughlycheck your hitch, electricalconnections and trailer wheellug nuts.

• When stopped in traffic for longperiods of time in hot weather, place the gearshift in P (Park)to increase idle speed. This aidsengine cooling and airconditioner efficiency.

• Vehicles with trailers should notbe parked on a grade. If youmust park on a grade, placewheel chocks under the trailer’swheels.

Driving

115

Luggage rack (if equipped)Load luggage as far back as it willsafely go without loading morethan 45 kg (100 lb) or cause thevehicle to exceed the GrossVehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) orits Gross Axle Weight Rating(GAWR). Use the following stepsto adjust the luggage rack.

• Turn adjustment wheelbackward to unlock crossbarand slide crossbar forward orbackward.

• Turn adjustment wheel forwardto lock crossbar.

FUEL CONSUMPTIONFuel economy can be improved byavoiding:

• lack of regular, scheduledmaintenance

• excessive speed

• rapid acceleration

• driving with the brake pedaldepressed

Driving

116

Page 117: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

• sudden stops

• extended engine idling

• use of speed control in hillyterrain

JUMP STARTING A DISABLEDVEHICLE

The gases around thebattery can explode if

exposed to flames, sparks, or litcigarettes. An explosion couldresult in injury or vehicledamage.

To protect yourself whencharging a battery, always

shield your face and eyes. Makesure that you can breath freshair.

Batteries contain sulfuricacid which burns skin,

eyes and clothing.

If the acid touches someone’s skin, eyes, or clothing, immediately flushthe area with water for at least 15minutes. If someone swallows theacid, have him or her drink lots ofmilk or water first, then Milk ofMagnesia, a beaten egg, or

CHECKING AND ADDINGENGINE OILUse WSS-M2C153-F motor oilCERTIFIED FOR GASOLINEENGINES by the AmericanPetroleum Institute.

Engine oils with an SAE 5W–30viscosity and displaying theAmerican Petroleum Institutecertification mark are preferred foryour vehicle. They provide the bestengine performance, fuel economyand engine protection for allclimates down to –25°C (–15°F).

Do not use:

• “non-detergent” oils

• oils labeled API SA, SB, SC, SD,SE, SF, or SG

• additional engine oil additives, oil treatments or enginetreatments

Additional engine oil additives, oiltreatments, or engine treatmentsare never needed and could, undercertain conditions, lead to enginedamage which is not covered byyour Ford warranty.

Synthetic engine oils which areCERTIFIED and of the preferredviscosity may be used in yourengine. The engine oil and oil filtermust still be changed according tothe Service Guide.

Checking the engine oilCheck the engine oil every timeyou fuel your vehicle.

Check the engine oil level morefrequently if the vehicle is carryinga heavy load, towing a trailer, idling for extended periods (likepolice, taxi, or shuttle servicevehicles), or driven at high speedsfor extended periods of time.

To check engine oil:

1. Once the engine is warm, turnthe engine off. Make sure thevehicle is parked on level ground.

2. Depress the parking brake.Place the gearshift in P (Park).

3. Open the hood. Protect yourselffrom engine heat.

4. Remove the engine oil dipstickand wipe clean. Reinsert thedipstick fully, then remove it again. The oil level should be betweenthe MIN and MAX lines. If the oillevel lies between the MIN andMAX lines, there is no need toadd.

5. If the oil level is below the MINline, add engine oil as necessaryand recheck the oil level. If the oillevel is above the letter ‘‘M’’ in‘‘MAX,’’ engine damage and/or highoil consumption may occur andsome oil must be removed fromthe engine.

Information about tire gradesNew vehicles are fitted with tiresthat have their Tire Quality Grade(described below) molded into thetire’s sidewall. These Tire QualityGrades are determined bystandards that the United StatesDepartment of Transportation hasset.

Tire Quality Grades apply to newpneumatic tires for use onpassenger cars. They do not applyto deep tread, winter-type snowtires, space-saver or temporary usespare tires, tires with nominal rimdiameters of 25.4 cm to 30.48 cm(10 to 12 in.) or limited productiontires as defined in Title 49 Code ofFederal Regulations Part575.104(c)(2).

U.S. Department of Transportation- Tire quality grades: The U.S.Department of Transportationrequires Ford to give you thefollowing information about tire

Maintenance and care

158

Page 159: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

grades exactly as the governmenthas written it.

TreadwearThe treadwear grade is acomparative rating based on thewear rate of the tire when testedunder controlled conditions on aspecified government test course. For example, a tire graded 150would wear 11⁄2 times as well onthe government course as a tiregraded 100. The relativeperformance of tires depends uponthe actual conditions of their use, however, and may departsignificantly from the norm due tovariations in driving habits, servicepractices, and differences in roadcharacteristics and climate.

Traction A B CThe temperature grades, fromhighest to lowest, are A, B and C.These grades represent the tire’sability to stop on wet pavement asmeasured under controlledconditions on specified governmenttest surfaces of asphalt andconcrete. A tire marked C mayhave poor traction performance.

The traction gradeassigned to this tire is

based on braking (straightahead) traction tests and doesnot include cornering (turning)traction.

Maintenance and care

159

Page 160: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

Temperature A B CThe temperature grades, fromhighest to lowest, are A, B and C.These grades represent the tire’sresistance to the generation ofheat and its ability to dissipateheat when tested under controlledconditions on a specified indoorlaboratory test wheel. Sustainedhigh temperature can cause thematerial of the tire to degenerateand reduce tire life, and excessivetemperature can lead to suddenfailure. The grade C correspondsto a level of performance which allpassenger tires must meet underthe Federal Motor Vehicle SafetyStandard No. 109. Grades A and Brepresent higher levels ofperformance on the laboratory testwheel than the minimum requiredby law.

The temperature grade forthis tire is established for a

tire that is properly inflated andnot overloaded. Excessive speed, under inflation, or excessiveloading, either separately or incombination, can cause heatbuild up and possible tire failure.

belted or bias-type tires. Useonly the tire sizes that are listedon the tire pressure decal.

Make sure all replacementtires are of the same size,

type, load-carrying capacity, andtread design, e.g., “All Terrain”,as originally offered by Ford.

Maintenance and care

162

Page 163: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

Failure to follow theseprecautions may adversely

affect the handling of the vehicleand make it easier to lose controland roll over.

IDENTIFYING TIRE TYPESRefer to the Safety ComplianceCertification Label to determinethe specific size tire and wheelFord Motor Company recommendsfor use on this vehicle.

All wheel/tire combinations(including spare) must be thesame size for AWD equippedvehicles.

SNOW TIRES AND CHAINS

Snow tires must be thesame size and grade as the

tires you currently have on yourvehicle.

The tires on your vehicle have allweather treads to provide tractionin rain and snow. However in someclimates, you may need to usesnow tires and chains. Followthese guidelines when using snowtires and chains:

• Use only SAE Class “S” chains.

• Install chains securely, verifyingthat the chains do not touch anywiring, brake lines or fuel lines.

• Install tire chains on rear tiresonly.

Maintenance and care

163

Page 164: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

• Drive cautiously. If you hear thechains rub or bang against yourvehicle, stop and re-tighten thechains. If this does not work, remove the chains to preventdamage to your vehicle.

• If possible, avoid fully loadingyour vehicle.

• Remove the tire chains whenthey are no longer needed. Donot use tire chains on dry roads.

• The suspension insulation andbumpers will help preventvehicle damage. Do not removethese components from yourvehicle when using snow tiresand chains.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOWABOUT AUTOMOTIVE FUEL

Do not overfill the fueltank. The pressure in an

overfilled tank may causeleakage and lead to fuel sprayand fire.

If you do not use a properfuel cap, the pressure in

the fuel tank can damage thefuel system or cause it to workimproperly in a collision.

Maintenance and care

164

Page 165: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

If you replace your fuelcap with an aftermarket

fuel filler cap, the customerwarranty may be void if anydamage to the fuel tank and/orfuel system occurs.

If the fuel cap is ventingvapor or you hear a hissing

sound, wait until it stops beforecompletely removing the cap.

Automotive fuels cancause serious injury or

death if misused or mishandled.

Extinguish all smoking materialsand any open flames before fuelingyour vehicle.

Automotive fuels can be harmful orfatal if swallowed. If fuel isswallowed call a physicianimmediately, even if no symptomsare apparent. The toxic effects offuels may not be visible for manyhours.

Fuels can also be harmful ifabsorbed through the skin. If fuelis splashed on the skin, promptlyremove contaminated clothing andwash skin thoroughly with soapand water.

If fuel is splashed in the eyes, remove contact lenses, flush withplenty of water for 15 minutes, andseek medical attention.

Be particularly careful if you aretaking “Antabuse” or other forms

of disulfiram for the treatment ofalcoholism. Breathing gasolinevapors or skin contact couldpossibly cause an adverse reaction.Consult a physician immediately.

Cleaner airFord approves the use of gasolinesto improve air quality, includingreformulated gasolines, thatcontain oxygenates such as amaximum of 10% ethanol or 15%MTBE. There should be no morethan 5% methanol with cosolvents.

Octane recommendationsYour vehicle is designed to useregular gasoline with an (R+M)/2octane rating of 87. We do notrecommend gasolines labeled as9regular9 in high altitude areas thatare sold with octane ratings of 86or even less.

Do not be concerned if yourvehicle sometimes knocks lightly. However, if it knocks heavily undermost driving conditions on therecommended octane fuel, seeyour dealer or a qualified servicetechnician to prevent any enginedamage.

Fuel qualityIf you are experiencing starting, rough idle or hesitation problemstry a different brand of fuel. If thecondition persists, see your dealeror a qualified service technician.

The American AutomobileManufacturers Association (AAMA)

87

Maintenance and care

166

Page 167: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

issued a gasoline specificaton toprovide information on high qualityfuels that optimize theperformance of your vehicle. Werecommend the use of gasolinesthat meet the AAMA specificationif they are available.

It should not be necessary to addany aftermarket products to yourfuel tank if you continue to use ahigh-quality fuel.

Choosing the right fuelUse only UNLEADED FUEL. Theuse of leaded fuel is prohibited bylaw and could damage yourvehicle. The damage may not becovered by your warranty.

Your vehicle was not designed touse fuel containingmanganese-based additives such asMMT. Additionally, vehiclescertified to California emissionstandards (indicated on theunderhood Vehicle EmissionsControl Information label) aredesigned to operate on Californiareformulated gasolines. IfCalifornia reformulated gasoline isnot available when you refuel, yourvehicle can be operated onnon-California fuels. However, eventhough your engine will performadequately on other gasolines, theperformance of the emissioncontrol devices and systems maybe adversely affected. Repair ofdamage caused by using a fuel thatyour vehicle was not designed formay not be covered by yourwarranty.

Maintenance and care

167

Page 168: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

Calculating fuel economy1. Fill the tank completely andrecord the initial odometerreading.

2. Each time you fill the tank, record the amount of fuel added(in liters or gallons).

3. After at least three to five fueltank fill-ups, fill the fuel tank andrecord the final odometer reading.

Keep a record for at least onemonth. This will provide anaccurate estimate of the vehicle’sfuel economy.

4. Use one of the followingequations to calculate fueleconomy:

Liters used x 100 4 Totalkilometers travelled

Total miles travelled 4 Totalgallons used

The fuel economy figures providedby the Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) and TransportCanada (TC) are obtained fromlaboratory tests under simulatedroad conditions and may notreflect actual road conditions orindividual driving styles. The EPAfuel economy estimate is not aguarantee, but a guideline ofprojected fuel economy.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOWABOUT THE EMISSIONCONTROL SYSTEMYour vehicle is equipped with acatalytic converter which enables

Maintenance and care

168

Page 169: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

your vehicle to comply withapplicable exhaust emissionrequirements. For moreinformation on your vehicle’semission control system, see theVehicle Emission ControlInformation decal located on theleft side of the enginecompartment.

Follow these guidelines to ensureproper emission system operation:

• Use only unleaded fuel.

• Avoid running out of fuel.

• Do not turn off the ignitionwhile your vehicle is in motion.

• Have the services performedaccording to the intervals in theService Guide.

When servicing your vehicle, neveruse a metal exhaust collector. Ametal collector may melt or deformplastic parts.

Do not park, idle, or driveyour vehicle in dry grass

or other dry ground cover. Theemission system heats up theengine compartment and exhaustsystem, which can start a fire.

On vehicles withoutoriginal equipment floor

covering or insulation, do not letpassengers ride in your truck ina manner that allows contactbetween skin and the metal floor.

Maintenance and care

169

Page 170: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

If you notice one or more of thefollowing, the emission system maynot be working properly. Have thevehicle serviced as soon aspossible.

• Fluid leaks.

• The and CHECK ENGINE lights

illuminate in the instrumentcluster and remain lit.

• Strange odors.

• Engine runs more than fiveseconds after shut-off or enginemisfires, surges, stalls orbackfires.

• Loss of oil pressure.

When servicing your vehicle, neveruse a metal exhaust collector. Ametal collector may heat or deformplastic parts.

Important emission controlinformationBy law, anyone who manufactures, repairs, services, sells, leases, trades vehicles, or supervises afleet of vehicles is not permitted tointentionally remove an emissioncontrol device or prevent it fromworking.

Do not make any unauthorizedchanges to the vehicle or engine.Changes that cause moreunburned fuel to reach the exhaustsystem can increase thetemperature of the engine orexhaust system.

Maintenance and care

170

Page 171: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

Preparing your vehicle forinspection/maintenance testingIn some localities it may become alegal requirement to pass anInspection/Maintenance test of theOn-Board Diagnostic (OBD II)system. If the vehicle’s powertrainsystem or battery has just beenserviced, the OBD II system isreset to a not ready for I/M testingcondition. To ready the OBD IIsystem for I/M testing, the lawspecifies that additional mixed cityand highway driving is necessaryto complete the check of the OBDII system.

The driving modes required toreach the ready condition consistof a minimum of 30 minutes of cityand highway driving as describedbelow:

• 20 minutes of driving in stopand go city-type traffic with atleast four idle periods.

• 10 minutes of driving on anexpressway or highway.

Before completing the abovedriving modes, the engine must bewarmed up and at operatingtemperature. Once started, thevehicle must not be turned offduring the above driving modes. Ifthe vehicle owner is unable tomeet the I/M requirements byusing these driving patterns, anauthorized service center canperform a detailed OBD II DriveCycle as it would any other type ofrepair work.

Cleaning the instrument panelAny cleaner or polish thatincreases the gloss of the upperportion of the instrument panelshould be avoided. The dull finishin this area is to help protect thedriver from undesirable windshieldreflection.

Cleaning the exterior lampsDo not use dry paper towel, chemical solvents, or abrasivecleaners to clean the lamps; theseproducts may cause scratches orcrack the lamps.

Maintenance and care

182

Page 183: Manual usuario Mercury Mountaineer 1997

Cleaning the engineA clean engine is more efficientthan a dirty one because a buildupof grease and dirt acts as aninsulator and keeps the enginewarmer than normal. Follow theseguidelines to clean your engine:

• Take care when using a powerwasher to clean the engine. Thehigh pressure fluid couldpenetrate the sealed parts andcause damage.

• In order to avoid cracking theengine block, do not spray withcold water.

• The alternator, ignition coilpacks, and air intake must becovered to prevent waterdamage when cleaning theengine.

• Never wash or rinse the enginewhile it is running; water in therunning engine may causeinternal damage.

Cleaning the wiper bladesIf the wiper blades do not wipeproperly, clean both the windshieldand the wiper blades usingundiluted windshield washersolution or a mild detergent. Rinsethoroughly with clean water. Donot use fuel, kerosene, paintthinner, or other solvents to cleanyour wiper blades; these fluids willdamage your blades.
