Welcome from your chairmanWelcome to May’s meeting of Mansfield and District U3A. The year is flying by, but, as we say, the olderwe get, time does seem to pass more quickly.

I cannot believe that a year ago I wrote about attending a youth festival of rugby at Cromford Meadowsnear Matlock. Well, I went again this year and I am full of praise for the young players (aged from 7 to 14),the referees and the organisers, I hope it continues for many years. I also attended a concert featuring theCarlton Male Voice Choir at the Albert Hall, Nottingham, with guests, the Kanneh-Mason family, sixwonderfully gifted musicians aged 10 to 19 who were an inspiration to everyone. There are a lot of greatkids out there who we should encourage and help.

I hope May will be warmer for us as April was very wintry at times. We have our Coffee Morning onFriday May 20th at 10.00 am at The Towers. If you haven’t purchased a ticket, please do so as it helpsto keep our subs low. I always enjoy the event: a raffle, tombola and cake stall, with plants for sale fromthe gardeners, pies from Shelia Whalley and, of course, a cup of coffee. Enjoy!

We do need more people to put themselves forward to be on the committee. It is very importantto our U3A that we have a vibrant and enthusiastic committee to guide us onwards to being abetter organisation, so please help if you can.

The electronic notice board is still improving and I believe we are winning. Some group leadersare submitting notices to be shown and Gordon Howlett is forwarding the pictures of events. Allwill be on the “notice board”. Please take time to have a look at the TVs during the coffee break.Any constructive criticism is welcome as we try to improve the display.Bob Longden_________________________________________________________________________________Words from the EditorI've just arrived back from a holiday in Italy – Lake Garda and aboard a river cruiser in Venice, so pleaseexcuse any errors in this edition. A French-owned boat with haute cuisine and all drinks included did notmake for an easy time!

Norma Smith, our Speaker Finder, says that last month's speaker, Andy Smith, produced an enjoyableand relaxing hour of entertainment with anecdotes of his life and songs played on a variety of guitars andsimilar instruments. She hopes that you enjoyed his 'speech' as well.

A piece of important late news – Mansfield Town FC has kindly allowed us to park our cars in their carpark when we take a day trip. Park on the left as you go in, behind the gate. Group leaders – pleasecontinue to inform the Secretary and obtain the U3A display slip from him.

Enjoy this issue of the Newsletter.Mike Allen

A 'Royal' Visit to the Antiques & Collectables GroupThe April meeting was surprised and delighted at the coffee break when an anonymous personturned up to offer cakes to the members (see picture)! The theme, of course, was RoyalMemorabilia. Pat Blackwell had worried lest the subject was too narrow and so offered 'London'as an alternative but once again, the members displayed their wealth of possessions in a widevariety of objects connected with Royalty.

Not just the present Queen, but also past Royals, wereremembered on mugs and stamps, in books andcertificates and with bottles and trinkets. The selectionwas wide and varied and each had its own story. Ofinterest as well, was David Ling's print of the RoyalAcademy by Sir Hugh Casson PRA who designed theinterior of the RY Britannia and taught Prince Charles.

Antiques & Collectables Group VisitOn a Saturday morning in April, thirty one membersboarded a coach to attend an antiques fair at StaffordCounty Showground. Not long into the journey, I wasasked why the driver was taking this unusual route toStamford. I had to point out that we were going toStafford not Stamford! Anticipation was high and sowas the level of chatter.

We arrived safely and started to view as many of the300 stalls as we could. I think I managed to see about275 of them. I did stop for lunch and later coffee and cake – well you need to keep yourenergy levels up!

On the return journey, I discovered that many people had bought things and that one ladyhad sold an item and proceeded to spend the money immediately. It didn’t have time to burna hole in her pocket. Some bartering was entered into and I understand one person told thestallholder that the grandchildren would have to wear shoes with holes in the bottom if theprice of the intended purchase wasn’t reduced. I think he was successful.

I don’t think there was as much chatter on the return journey but, all in all, I think we had anenjoyable, though tiring, day out.Pat Blackwell

GolfA record turnout of 11 members played the front nine of the Admiral’s Course and the back nine of theCommander’s Course at Oakmere Park in the last monthly fixture. One of our new members had aninteresting experience when he was attacked by a squirrel. Luckily the attack was repelled by threateningit with a golf club. The moral of the story is do not take your breakfast round in your golf club bag!

Page 9: Mansfield U3A Newsletter: May 2016

At the 19th hole, someone said he was considering reporting Tony to the R.S.P.C.A! All memberssaid they had enjoyed the game.

The next fixture is at Brierley Forest Golf Course, Huthwaite on Friday 27th May at 9.30 am for a 10 amtee off. The fees are between £11-£15 dependent on the number of holes you play.Paul Mann

SHUFFLERS CELEBRATE THE QUEEN'S 90th BIRTHDAY!The Shufflers, decked out in red, white and blue, celebrated the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth atBrierley Park with a light lunch, followed by a birthday cake and a spirited singing of the national anthem.

We intended to finish our day with a shuffle to the lake, but as we were leaving the visitor centre, a heavyhailstorm sent us 'shuffling' to the car park. The swans were denied our version of Happy Birthday, much totheir relief! The next meeting will be at Edwinstowe Craft Centre on Thursday May 26th.Sylvia Slack

International Dining GroupWednesday 6th April saw the International Dining Group having a great time at Chungs ChineseRestaurant in Mapperley. With 24 members and a guest from Burma, this was truly an internationalevening. The menu was extensive and with good portions, but, better still, it tasted excellent. Even thehouse wine was reasonable in price and taste.

Six members who normally join us (holidays taking precedence this month) missed a treat. Our nextventure on Wednesday May 11th is to And Why Not, an English restaurant in the heart of Mansfieldwith a first class reputation. Why not (no pun intended) give the International Dining Group a try? Jacqui Hampshire

History Group The Dwindling Band, or Didn’t We Have A Wonderful Time the Day We Went to Warwick?Erudite pop aficionados might screw their faces up at the mention of the above before hesitatinglyoffering, ‘I think they had a hit in the late 1960’s. Well, possibly, but our Dwindling Band almost sank outof sight before setting off for the great mediaeval fortress of Warwick. By the time we boarded the bus, there were but four of us left. Rita, Sandra, Dave and Jenny finally de-bussed at the castle after arrivingwith a bang as the Skills (?) Driver attempted to demolish a wall that, for all I know, had been lovinglyhand laid by some ancient aristocrat. Cue swarming security guards alerted by the bang oops thudscrape noises.

Undaunted, Sandra set off to tie down the legend of Warwick the Kingmaker, whilst Dave, after readingthe health and safety warning that Persons suffering from cardiac, lung, back and other related

muscular skeletal issues are strongly advised not to enter plunged not into the deepest dungeon, butthe less arduous Gaol Attraction.

Funny idea of fun these ancestors of ours had!

During our tour of the rest of the cunninglydisguised sub-Disney tourist trap, we weregratified to hear dozens of different languagesspoken and to watch the national coffers trillingup a profit as tourist Yen, Dollars and Roublespoured into the nation’s grimly mitts. Dave wasparticularly taken by a large group of obviouslyrustic Poles rambling up towards the battle-ments (most nailed into a fence – the poles, notthe Poles).

On the whole, an enjoyable day enhanced bythe rain holding off just long enough not tobother us. Warwick the Kingmaker, I hope,

would be delighted to see his old home supporting our economy. Dave Drew

StrollersThe Strollers have been having an exciting time of late with the March and April walks becomingquite an adventure. The weather in March was not too good but five brave souls dared to venture outaround Vicar Water where parts were flooded. We waded through water and clung to hedgerows fordear life although back at the café, relaxing over a cup of tea, we saw the funny side of it all.

The Hardwick walk in April proved tobe just as adventurous, only this timethe hazard was mud. We had to detouras the National Trust is reworking thepaths and the wood. Boy, did we havefun trying to stay upright as we slippedaround in the mud! Marion did fall andher light coloured jacket changedshade.

But the weather was perfect and wesat outside the Hardwick Inn enjoyingour coffee in the sun. If you want to adda sense of adventure to your life, thenjoin the Strollers!Barbara Massey

Dave Drew's Indoor Model Flying didn't get off the ground – perhaps an idea ahead of its time? Acomparison could be the gyrocopter – a good idea, but it never really took off.

On the other hand, his History Group is going well and the next meeting, on Wednesday 18th May,is on the 'Great Explorers'. Meanwhile, Christine Smith's new Swimming Group is bobbing along merrily. She reports, “Therewere 10 members who are very interested in the swimming group, but only 3 of us turned up lastSunday. I am looking at the 1st and 3rd Sundays at 2.00pm at the FitnessFlex gym, next to thefootball ground. The cost is £4.00, for the use of the (warm) pool, plus the sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, turbo pool and free hairdryers! Don't forget the pound coin for the lockers, but you get thisback”. Contact Christine on 07859 249086 or at the meeting.

Our Centre (the Kirkby Community Bus owners) has had to increase their prices quite considerablyas a result of large cuts to their grants by the Council, the increase in the 'Living Wage' and thenecessity to provide a pension for any employees. So, goodbye to cheaper travel from that source.

The Book Table made £38.70 in April. Lilian reports, “We are still trying to get the optimum format forthe tables to enable people to see the books before they buy. Sooner or later we will have anarrangement which works but in the meantime, if you cannot get before the announcements, comeduring the break”.
