Welcome from your chairmanWelcome to the March meeting. Spring will officially begin on March 20th, but the month seems tohave started wet and windy; lets all hope it quickly improves. The move to M.T.F.C. 1861 Suite isprogressing well and the staff are most welcoming.

When we considered the move, one attraction was the televisions placed all around the room. Wecould play videos through the DVD player, but the manager of the venue planned to play noticesand speakers' photos or films directly from a PC. Now this has been installed, I hope that thetelevisions will show what is on the large screen. We are perfecting the use of the system and, bythe April meeting, it should be up and running.

The Quiz Night was a great success; thank you, Graham Headworth, for taking my place as Icould not be there. There is a full report on page 3 in the Newsletter, so enough said, apart frommy thanks to Ian and Pauline Boucher for their great effort in putting on a successful evening’sentertainment. The Quiz Night raises funds for our U3A which helps to keep our subs down.

The next event for fund raising is the Coffee Morning on Friday May 20th. Tickets will be on saleat the monthly meeting so please buy one as all monies help to keep our U3A financially healthy. The book stall also raises funds all year for the same reason, so buy a couple of books, enjoy theread, and help your U3A.

We are in the process of changing our IT procedures for the future. A new sub-committee hasbeen set up to ensure that there will be a smooth and easy changeover from one WebAdministrator or Picture Editor or Newsletter Editor to the next and we hope to have this in placeover the next few months with the help of David Ling, our web master.

I will finish by reminding you that any suggestions may be put in the suggestion box. If you haveany concerns please let your committee know. I hope you enjoy the meeting.Bob Longden

AnnouncementsIt is with deep regret that we have learnt that Eileen Crosby has passed away. Her funeral was on March 4 th.We offer our sincere condolences to her family and friends._________________________________________________________________________________In this issue

Words from the EditorI was interested to read an article in the i newspaper the other day on U3A in the Educationsection. Drawing on interviews with two members and the National Chairman, the writer praisedthe organisation for alleviating the 'debilitating loneliness and isolation that is endemic amongolder people in the UK' and for providing members with 'the array of new opportunities to learn'.Interestingly, Pam Jones, the National Chairman, said, “We are not a welfare organisation, butour modus operandi produces this added bonus.” I think we would all agree with the viewsexpressed.

As a passing thought, this article was in a newspaper, and all papers are going through a badtime now, losing circulation year on year – up to 10% off per annum. Yet where could I read suchan article on the internet, or reflect on it a week later, sitting in an armchair? Newspapers mustbe preserved to provide this type of thoughtful article.

Jill PullanIt is with great pleasure that we have learnt that JillPullan, of Mansfield, Ashfield and Rainworth U3As, hasbeen placed on the U3A Roll of Honour for herexceptional efforts in helping with the development ofRainworth U3A and her work with the other U3As. Mansfield U3A Committee and members are delighted tocongratulate her on such a deserved honour. She joinsone of our founding members, Edith Senior, on the Roll.

The February MeetingThose members who missed February's meeting misseda treat. It is difficult to see how gravestones can be fun, but, by scraping the moss off them and copying down theepitaphs, Jean Townsend created an hour or more ofgentle humour.

She held the audience on her journey through England’schurchyards as the human quirks found in the epitaphsof the past were revealed. The message behind the talk

was that we should preserve and value our churchyards and cemeteries for their interest and notallow the authorities to crush the humorous or spiky epitaph in favour of the bland message. Ourthanks to Jean for a most enjoyable morning.Mike Allen

Popular Music AppreciationPeter Haynes would like to remind all members of the group that the annual lunch will be held on theMarch 22nd meeting date at the Carnarvon Arms, Teversal. Please arrive at 12.30pm for 1pm.

Quiz NightOnce again, the annual Quiz Night was a resounding success, in fact, the room seemed fullerand more noisy than usual. Of course, the whole idea of expecting us to remember trivia fromthe past is completely ridiculous when half of us can’t remember what we had for breakfast!

The evening had just the right amount of barracking the question master, of argument betweenteam members as to who knew the most and of accusations of treachery and deceit between theteams. As the evening wore on, the noise level rose in proportion to the lowering of wine andbeer, but sociability reigned supreme.

Page 4: Mansfield U3A Newsletter: March 2016

Naturally, the best team lost, leaving thekudos to, once again, the team with 'TW'on it. How many years now? I ask. Butwho cares who won; it was enough that Iknew the quotation was from TwelfthNight even if I knew nothing else; it wasenough that everyone had a good time.

For that, we could thank Pauline and IanBoucher for the set-up and the questions(did they work it all out in New Zealand?);Janet Whitlam and Sue Longden for the(delicious) food; and Jean Hinds and LizEllis for the raffle which raised £177. Thetotal net sum that went to Mansfield U3Awas £455 – and for that sum, thanks to those above, to all our members and to those fromAshfield, Forest Town, Rainworth and Sherwood. What a night!Mike Allen

Theatre Visit to 'Blood Brothers' by Willy RussellI missed Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers musical play when it first came out over 20 years ago, but Imanaged to catch up with it on February 17th this year at the Theatre Royal.

It was an amazing production which charted the lives of twin brothers who were separated at birth; oneto remain in working-class Everton and one given to the childless factory owner’s wife. Grown menplaying the roles of children might be stretching a point, but they were wholly believable, down to ridingmake-believe horses in Cowboys and Indians games and spitting competitions! Then followed theinitiation rite of piercing their thumbs to let their bloods mingle to become ‘Blood Brothers’.

But the comedy slowly turned to tragedy as they grew older. Throughout the play was the fear of themiddle class adoptive mother that her twin might become 'infected' by contact with his working classbrother. The discovery made by the twins that they really were brothers rapidly moved to tragedy asboth brothers were killed in an abortive robbery. The shock was felt throughout the audience and as Isurreptitiously wiped my eye, I could see that other U3Aers were doing the same.

A powerful cast in a gritty yet poignant play that was brilliantly staged. The audience stood to give thecast four curtain calls.Graham Headworth

Wine Group 3 Celebrates Ten YearsIt was on the evening of Friday January 20th 2006, that a group of Mansfield U3A members assembled atRon & Carole Britton’s home in Kirkby-in-Ashfield for a meeting to discuss the formation of a new wineappreciation group.

Ron Britton was already an experienced wine judge and had started and led Mansfield U3A wine groups1 and 2. Group 1 had not been entirely successful and had closed; hence the exploratory Januarymeeting, where it was decided to go ahead with the new group 3, with Ron as group leader, and with aformat as used by the previous groups. Meetings were to be held on the third Tuesday of each month atthe homes of members in turn.

February 2006 saw our first tasting sessionwhich involved four bottles of wine madefrom the Merlot grape, each bottle from adifferent country. All were duly sniffed, swirled, sipped and swallowed, (no spitting itout with our members) then given a scoreout of thirty, and put in their place order offirst to fourth. The tasting over, theremainder of the evening was taken up withconvivial conversation over supper suppliedby the hosts.

This has now happened every month withfew exceptions for the last ten years, and weall love it just as much now as we did at thatfirst meeting. The group leader has changeda couple of times but that is all. The people in the group now, were all at the first meeting, and we are nowold friends rather than wine tasting acquaintances. Whilst we wouldn’t claim to be connoisseurs, we haveall learned a great deal about the world of wine, especially that the most expensive bottle is not always theone we like best.

Page 10: Mansfield U3A Newsletter: March 2016

To mark these ten years of good times, Lynne & Barrie Jackson entertained us to a wonderful fourcourse dinner at their home in Annesley on the Tuesday February 23rd, where wine was the maintheme, and the food chosen to match. We had a dry rose with starters, sweet whites from Portugal andAustralia with pudding, but the stars of the evening were two 13-year-old French reds, one from Paulliac, the other from St. Julien.

It has been a wonderful ten years for us, and another small success for the U3A movement, which wemust thank for bringing us all together.Graham Allin

There are now three wine groups in Mansfield U3A. Unfortunately, they are full as they meet inmembers' houses. However, should any U3A members wish to set up a fourth group, we wouldbe delighted to help in any way possible (apart from contributing bottles of wine, of course). Noexperience is necessary, just a liking for wine and good company!

Blazing Saddles in BlidworthDown in the wilds of Blidworth Bottoms, at the Kirkfields Equestrian Centre, strange sights were to beseen last Friday. Six ladies strode out of a room and swaggered across the concrete yard. Dressed invarious hues, but mostly black, stamping their boots on the ground and peering out from under theirhelmets on the top of which was written the letter K for the benefit of the air ambulance, they made theirway to the indoor riding school.

There, they climbed gingerly up the ridingsteps and, even more gingerly, clamberedonto an assortment of horses of differentsizes, shapes, colours and hairiness. Theseall had one thing in common, a look ofdisdain, as if to say ‘We were once noblesteeds but now are reduced to this’.

They ambled off on a walk round the shed, stopping every so often to relievethemselves on the sawdust in anembarrassingly powerful display. Thehorses, you understand, not the ladies.

At this point, your reporter departed thescene, frozen but full of admiration for them(the ladies, not the horses). Who wouldhave thought that ladies ‘of a certain age’would take to riding so enthusiastically? Ageis no barrier, obviously, nor dodgy kneesand backs. No men could be seen – are they all so fearful or, perhaps, so sensible? Never mind, I'msure that Mansfield U3A is the first to have such a group.

Let Christine Smith, the Group Leader, take up the tale:

The groups go on a Friday at 11.00am for 11.30; this gives time to complete the insurance forms. Ifriders do not have their own hard hats and footwear, they can hire them at a cost of £1.00 each, andthese are checked to ensure they fit and are up to standard. There are two groups at the moment, the

Page 11: Mansfield U3A Newsletter: March 2016

more experienced group go on the 4th Friday of the month; the other group, the beginners, will be going onthe 2nd Friday of each month, starting on March 11th.

Any new riders will be placed into the best group to best suit their needs, or a new group could be started onone of the other Fridays and, if numbers increase, it could be extended to every Friday.

If you are interested, contact Christine Smith on 07859 249086 or see her at the monthly meeting.

The Luncheon ClubA group of 25 diners visited the Carnarvon Armsin Teversal for February's lunch. Although theservice was a bit chaotic, everyone enjoyedthemselves and there were no complaints.Three of our regulars have volunteered toarrange the next lunches for us; our thanks tothem.
