More than a year has passed since we started the activities in the Escuela de Oficios de la Construcción from Manos al Futuro, the results obtained are presented in this Annual Report, and they show a very significant progress. This document will allow the companies that support the project and the authorities that back us up, to follow our labor, but most of all it makes it easier for the workers, our direct beneficiaries, to contribute in our daily tasks by sharing their impressions and expectations with us.

It could be said that the history of Manos al Futuro dates back to my first years in University. Where besides the desire of becoming a good architect, my biggest concern was how to establish a close tie with the construction masters, so they would become my allies to build “my big projects”. Back then, it was said that the construction masters would “play” with the newly graduated architects by asking them to solve construction problems that only them knew how to solve, because they’ve been building for a long time. However, if you won their trust they’d share with you their biggest secrets and experiences.

Many years later as president of the College for Architects in Mexico City, I boosted a project that supports the knowledge and abilities of the construction workers. Back then it wasn´t accepted as I expected, but today it has become a life project that seeks to positively influence the quality of life of the workers and their families, as well as the prosperity of their neighborhoods and communities.

Through Manos al Futuro, a civil association, and with the solid support of FUNO Foundation, the objective is not only to attend the construction industry workers. Now our aim and project include all skills, both in edification and operation of any economic development. The task has been enormous: a jump into history and evolution of skills as well as hundreds of hours spent in investigation to rebuild their “Technical Papers” and the design of methodologies to train and evaluate, have allowed us just in a few months to achieve the formal recognition from other institutions. We already have the approval of the National Council of Normalization and Certification of Labor Competences, CONOCER (by its acronym in Spanish), that gave us the title: Entity of Evaluation and Certification. We’ve also created a strategic alliance with the National Institute of Adult Education INEA (by its acronym in Spanish), that will allow us to have in each of the training facilities an INEA community square. This

encourages and motivates us to renew everyday our commitment with those whom exercise the trades.

The document that you now possess seeks to generate evidences and arguments that will persuade more companies about the importance of embracing social responsibility with a more human and effective approach to benefit their workers. To support them in this labor, we also have the authority as an Authorized Organization for Donations, given by Mexico´s Secretaría de Hacienda, to help them earn fiscal benefits from their investments in human capital.

We acknowledge the key role played by FIBRA UNO, its foundation and PARKS. Being the biggest financial group and developer of real state projects in Latin America, for using the formative model of Manos al Futuro. With their support, the MÍTIKAH Group has become one of the biggest and most equipped training facilities in a multipurpose complex in plain construction. With their help, the possibilities of growing our trainings into including also other trades are a logical consequence to support the operations of the union and many other group projects. My gratitude to each and everyone of the members of Manos al Futuro de los Oficios, specially to Lic. Tania Cavellido, the General Manager, for her generosity and dedication to the project. Also, to those from other companies and institutions who have grown in this road, highlighting the participation and commitment of Bovis México for their mentorship and advise in recreating the “Technical Papers of the Trades”, but most of all to the more than 800 workers that in only a year of activities have gave us their trust to support them in the creation of a better future.

“We have to accomplish, that the economic development will also finance the social development in our country”

2. Identity and civic culture

Yesterday (our ancestors) …In the prehispanic world the “trade” was made with great dignity; children and young people were prepared to carry out different trades that were useful for the community where they lived.

The work of the “officers” of construction in the prehispanic world had an extraordinary quality and it was well organized. There were schools built under the theocratic regime in which children and young people learnt the different trades.

It was a moral, intellectual and technical formation.

The trades were hereditary from parents to children (Cfr. Jacques Soustelle, The daily life of the Aztecs in vespers of the Colony). This model of working and sharing the knowledge from parents to children created a solid trade linked with construction, as well as the social recognition of those who did it.

Did you know? The integral formation is a continuous, permanent and participative process that contributes in the harmonic development of each and all of the dimensions of the human being, with the aim of achieving its full personal and community fulfillment.

The ability is an innate attitude, talent, skill or capacity that a person has to complete an activity, work or trade.

In general, people have different behaviors to face daily issues, that’s why the development of abilities for life will allow them a better response to the daily demands and challenges.

AccountabilityWhat have we done?We developed an Integral Formative Model that considers a program of training, evaluation and certification of the labor competences all trades have.

How is it done?Through the 3 fundamental axes of the integral formative model:1. Strengthening of the knowledge and

technical abilities.2. Human development and abilities for

the life.3. Civic and community culture.

When is it done?Permanently, because we are a model in constant evolution; in our first stage of 99 years.

Where is it done? Our model is designed to form all workers that perform a trade throughout and across Mexico in the first stage, then it will have an international scope.

4. Exercising the trade “It is considered as technical education that one that has as an objective to

train the human being, so he will intelligently manage the theoretical resources and materials that humanity has accumulated to transform the physical environment and adapt it to his needs”. Luis Enrique ErroSeventy years of history of the IPN

The exercise of the trade has historically been passed on from generation to generation, from parents to children or from masters to apprentices especially in the working place when the young people come from rural communities and arrive to the cities looking for better labor opportunities.

In the construction scope, the process of generational transmission of knowledge and practices in the exercise of the diverse trades, has big gaps, mainly in labor safety issues, construction processes, knowledge about the characteristics of the materials, as well as the proper use of tools which has as a consequence irregular practices that endanger the workers life’s and generates costs related to a reduction in productivity and low constructive quality.

What have we done?• We summoned 800 builders to establish our study sample. • We gathered multidisciplinary teams integrated by

architects, engineers, supervisors, industrial safety specialists, social work specialists, historians, education specialists, among others.

• We designed a social study and applied diagnosis instruments to evaluate the levels of knowledge, abilities, attitudes and values in the workers.

• We elaborated the trade index of construction with their respective procedures.

• We made booklets of the trade for ferrets with 25 procedures, booklets of the trade for builders with 15 procedures, and booklets of the trade for carpentry with 20 procedures.

• We integrated site supervision teams with Bovis Mexico to check the booklets of trade.

• We identified the position categories: assistant, officer and cape, and we designed specific formational programs according to their different responsibilities.

How was it done?• We worked with our representative

study sample (the 800 active builders during the first stage of the construction of the real state project MÍTIKAH).

• We classified the workers based on the following two criteria:

1. By tradeWe identified the following trades: blacksmith, carpenter, builder, cleaner, tensor, drilling and welder.

2. By category Assistants, officers and capes. • We designed a social study “First

Diagnosis of the Workers” to identify the sociocultural characteristics and then elaborate a diagnosis of the population.

• We built an analytical process to determine the problems and opportunity areas where we might intervene.

• We designed an instrument of evaluation “the flexometer of trades” to obtain information about the level of knowledge

and the quality of execution of the processes in the trades.

• We integrated teams with officers and capes in the different trades to recover their technical knowledge and elaborate jointly, with the specialized engineers and architects, the index of procedures and safety measure of each trade.

• A specialized group of Bovis Mexico evaluated the products to ensure the quality of the booklets of site by trade and specialization.

The axis of Strengthening Abilities and Technical Knowledge, represents the spine of our formative program.

Manos al Futuro is an Entity of Certification and Evaluation (ECE) of labor competences accredited by the Consejo Nacional de Normalización yCertificación de Competencias Laborales (CONOCER, by its initials in Spanish). We have the following faculties: • Design training courses based on Competence Standards in the different trades.• Train the workers, so their development in the trades will be improved.• Evaluate and certify the knowledge, abilities and skills, attitudes, habits and values,

performance and products in every trade.• Include new Competence Standars in a model aimed to certify trades.

The Formative Model of Manos al Futuro incorporates the Pedagogical Model by Competences that has five dimensions: 1) Attitudes and effective perceptions

related to the process of learning.2) Acquisition and integration of new

knowledge.3) Extension and refinement of the

knowledge, that emerges when the practices get complicated.

4) The significative use of knowledge.5) The mental productive habits that

regulate behaviors, critical and creative thinking.
