Get into the swimTurn up Wednesday mornings bright

and early and the pool is definitely

the place to be for aqua aerobics

with experienced instructor Julie

from G.C. Personal Training.

Popular with both the ladies and the

gentlemen of the ‘Manor’ for both

fitness and fun, sessions run for

45 minutes and record numbers of

residents have turned up this year to

join in.

Before she moved to De Paul Manor,

Anne Allen had never tried aqua

aerobics and now she’s hooked on

the regular workouts. “I noticed huge

improvements even after just one

class,” said Anne.

De Paul Manor Estate is home

to three extraordinary women, all

with the name, Margaret Evans.

Coincidently all three Margaret’s live

in the same building. Luckily, saving

a lot of confusion, two of the three

now use different names.

Margaret Evans (known as Margaret

Evans) moved in prior to Christmas

and loves her new community. She

is a “top o’ the morning” Irish lass

who is already totally involved in the

Manor’s activities! Her neighbour

Margaret ‘Peggy’ Evans moved in

with husband Frank last year and

Peggy still plays tennis every week.

It turns out their respective children

went to the same schools!

Aqua aerobics for fun and fitness

Our third Margaret Evans, known

now as Jenny Artup, was christened

Margaret but always known as Jenny,

married to gain the surname Evans.

Jenny enjoys keeping fit with a daily

walk to Ashmore City.

Whether your name is Margaret,

Mary, Maude or May, there is no

doubt you will love living at the Manor

as much as our three Margarets.

Now that the De Paul Manor

Estate community is more

than 70% sold, newcomers

are being warmly welcomed

into the fold and new players

are emerging in the games

room. Whether it’s Scrabble

or a spirted game of Rummy

on Monday’s or perhaps

Trivial Pursuit on Friday

nights, the good-natured

battle of the intellects

rages on each week in the

luxurious surroundings of the

exclusive Residents’ Retreat!

‘Manorisms’ caught up with the

daughter of the late Maurie Cook,

one of our original residents, for a

heart-warming chat about his time at

De Paul Manor Estate.

Before Maurie came to live at De

Paul Manor, the former accountant

had relocated from Melbourne,

setting up home at Isle of Capri on

the Gold Coast. His daughter Gail

flew in from Melbourne regularly for

visits and holidays and stayed in

close contact via phone. Over time

Gail realised that it was becoming

too much for Maurie to be living

alone at home, at times he was

missing his medication, not eating

well and he needed to be around

other people. A solution was required

so when friends from Maurie’s

church recommended De Paul

Manor Estate, Gail decided to take a

look with her father.

“Immediately we knew this was right

Close to everything

The community that cares

One look at this photograph and you

can see that De Paul Manor Estate

is located close to an abundance of

convenient services and leisurely

distractions! The famous Gold Coast

beaches, the Broadwater, Australia

Fair and Harbour Town Shopping

Centres are all within 10 minutes

drive. Closer to home, Ashmore City

Shopping Centre and the Medical

Centre are just a short stroll away,

and the Mary Immaculate church is

literally next door! A tempting array

of quality restaurants, bowling,

golf and RSL clubs can be found

within easy reach of the community,

along with local bus routes, taxi

services and the future Gold Coast

Light Rail system which will have a

stop on Olsen Ave outside the new

Gold Coast Hospital. So whether

it’s shopping, transport, dining, art

galleries, live entertainment, or

a visit to one of the local clubs,

De Paul Manor Estate is close to

all the action.

for him, we were impressed by the

caring nature of the staff so we put

a deposit on an apartment then and

there,” said Gail.

Not long after he moved in, Maurie

was diagnosed with stage one

Dementia. “I was flying backwards

and forwards from Melbourne as

often as possible, that’s when the

staff and community at De Paul

Manor stepped in,” she said. “He

would have his meals down at De

Paul Villa each day and the staff at

De Paul Manor arrange to keep an

eye on his medication.”

De Paul Manor staff also made sure

Maurie didn’t miss any of the fun

events at the Residents’ Retreat,

and he was just as popular with the

residents as he was with the staff.

Throughout this time staff were

in regular email contact back and

forth with Gail regarding his general

wellbeing, and Gail would also

update them after long chats on the

phone with her Dad.

After living at De Paul Manor for 18

months, Maurie required full time

care so Gail was relieved that he

could move next door to De Paul

Villa Aged Care. She knew how

good the staff and level of care was.

“Everyone was brilliant there, it was

a real eye opener.”

“I was blown away by the genuine

care, love and respect shown to

my father and I’m just so grateful to

everyone. The communication was

excellent…it was like I was dealing

with family”. Sadly Maurie passed

away in November 2012, a popular

and much loved member of a very

close community.

On the social front, it was a busy
