SATs Nightclub With the KS2 SATs approaching, we present another opportunity for our Year 6 students to prepare for their KS2 SATs. Our SATs Nightclub, which proved both popular and useful last year, runs from Monday 24 April to Friday 5 May.

This free club commences straight after the Easter Holidays, and gives students the opportunity to revise in peace and quiet at school, with a teacher on hand to offer help and support.

The club will start at 3.05pm and students will be given light refreshments and a chance to unwind before they start their revision at 3.20pm.

It will run for the two weeks from 3.05pm to 4.20pm and will be supervised by a member of teaching staff. There will be a Maths Revision Room (Room 3A) and an English Revision Room (Room 9).

NHS Careers Fair Inspires Year 8 Students On 8 March students visited a careers event organised by Health Education England. The day’s main aim was to raise awareness of the health and caring professions among schools, colleges and the public in Leicestershire and Rutland.

There was so much for the students to get involved with, such as interactive

demonstrations and ‘have a go’ events, a full-size ambulance simulator to promote paramedic careers, opportunities to meet employees to talk about routes into work and representatives from universities, who discussed qualifications and courses.

Our students enjoyed getting hands on with the operating theatre challenge, finding out about the ambulance service and medical careers in the army, and learning how to use ultrasound and do key hole surgery. It was an inspiring day for everyone who was involved.

Dear Parents and Carers

As we move into the lighter evenings and as the examination season commences, we thank you for your continuing support this year.

This has been an exciting year for us and we are as delighted as you are to see so many students embracing the opportunity to benefit from a continuous educational journey with us through to GCSEs at 16.

We know that for many of you, the opportunity to thrive in a small and focused setting in which your child is

well known and supported is of paramount importance.

Thank you for all of the kind comments and feedback we have received about the many supportive events we have hosted. These have provided expert and impartial guidance on careers, professions, stress-busting and revision techniques and much, much more.

We will continue to provide this support in the years to come so that all of our

students feel confident and secure as they navigate the challenging times through teenage years and public examinations.

Our work with Humanutopia has been extremely powerful and this is already booked to continue into the next academic year. Watch this space to find out more!

Representatives from the British Heart Foundation visited Manor High School on Thursday 9 March with a film crew and photographers as the school has been chosen to be part of their next national campaign. This exclusive opportunity is a great honour for the school and reflects the amazing support our students show to the charity.

For the main part of the day nearly 50 students took part in some sporting games both inside and out. The students and staff taking part wore red tops and during the afternoon there was the chance for the whole of Knighton House to be involved with some drone filming. At lunchtime there was a mini fun run for staff, which brought much excitement from our students who cheered the staff along.

We were pleased to welcome some special visitors during the day, who each have a personal connection to the

charity. Zubeir Hassam, the father of the late Muhammad Hassam, a Manor High student. In addition, ex-student Aisha Seedat came to give her support. She is currently in her first year at De Montfort University yet still dedicates a lot of her time to fundraising.

The BHF team were blown away by the school and how everything ran like clockwork during their day at Manor High and they said the footage in itself has been beyond their expectations for filming in a school. We can’t wait to see the end result!

British Heart Foundation choose Manor High for their new campaign

On Friday 24 March it was Comic Relief and the theme at Manor High School was crazy hair. The hard work put in by our staff and students was incredible.

Many students and staff wore colourful wigs or created fantastic hairstyles. Red clothing and crazy hair could be seen across the school along with hair bobbles pointing in every direction. There were some really outstanding hairdos such as unicorn hair and even hair with tea cups in. Ellie Jehu C6 won our competition for the wackiest hair with the inspired idea with a

pouring coke bottle style.

As well as all the fun of the non-uniform day, during break and lunch time students were selling food to raise yet even more money. Tutor group C8 did a great job at selling the always popular samosas while students Misha Asim B7, Eisha Sodha C2, Sadia Jussab K8, Amreet Rana W8, Alina Adam W7, Kishalini Robinton Canute C4 and Sania Shah K3 sold biscuits and cakes.

Students received assemblies during the week in which the plight of those in desperate need of funding and support through Comic Relief was been shown.

As a school we raised an amazing £1,101.82 and we would like to thank everyone for their generous support during the day.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Over 50 Year 8 students had the most incredible experience on Thursday 30 March when they visited The Making of Harry Potter at Warner Bros. Studio Tour.

While the iconic Harry Potter film series was being made, the production crew saved many of the sets, props and costumes that were created especially for the films, just in case they were ever needed later on in the series. Once the last film of the series had been made, the production crew were left with thousands of intricate and beautifully-made artefacts, many of which wouldn't have been saved on a typical production.

The team behind Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter wanted to preserve and showcase these iconic props, costumes and sets so that Harry Potter fans could experience the magic of filmmaking first-hand. And that is exactly what our English and DTA students did.

Entering the Great Hall was a sight to behold and was just as impressive as the students had imagined it from the famous stories. The students were excited to be able to explore the actual sets of Diagon Alley, the Hollow, Hagrid’s Hut, The Ministry of Magic atrium and see character favourites like Dobbie, Buckbeak and Arragog.

After experiencing the sounds, sights, tastes and delights of the Studio Tour, the students had the opportunity to take part in lessons run by the educational team.

The English lesson offered a valuable insight in to how to pitch and persuade a film producer to commission a film and the need for clarity and brevity. While the ‘Movie Graphic Design’ lesson enabled them to discover the design processes and level of detail required to design and make props, costumes and sets in a film; both amazing opportunities to inspire them for existing and GCSE projects.

The imagination of J.K Rowling brought to life showed our students that creativity has no limit.

The whole day was a fabulous success and a memorable experience for all.

Google Expeditions On Wednesday 8 March Google Expeditions visited Manor High School as part of a pioneer program to engage students in learning through the use of Virtual Reality Headsets known as Google cardboard.

Just over 600 students participated in the Expeditions and we visited a range of

different places such as the Palace of Versailles, Post Impressionism, Vikings, Biodiversity and Preservation, New York City, Paris, The 7 Wonders of The World, Inside Aston Martin, The Great Barrier Reef and many more.

Students also experienced inside the Human Anatomy looking at the respiratory, digestive and circulatory systems.

It was a great way of looking at core subject matters and allowing teachers to

use technology to deliver content in a more visual way.

The feedback received from students and teachers was excellent and it inspired them to find out more about the expedition they had visited.

You can download the Google Expedition app for both Android and iPhone. The Google Cardboard can be purchased directly from Google, however, there are many others generic headsets available.

Maths News This half term has been very busy with our Year 6 students working hard towards their upcoming SATs examinations. Students have already participated in a walking talking mock as well as sitting a pre-public exam. The revision schedule is well underway and the older students are supporting our Year 6 students by completing numeracy activities during tutor time weekly.

As this term draws to a close students have been issued a target specific Easter revision pack of selected resources to support the vital work undertaken at home. Show my Homework has also been updated with a wealth of test

materials and a walking talking mock style PowerPoint. Upon their return students will be benefitting from additional Maths lessons and a strategic revision programme. We hope to continue the hard work and momentum and build upon the huge successes of last year.

UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge Success Congratulations to our exceptional Year 9 mathematicians who participated in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge in February. The annual Maths event enables thousands of participants across the UK to test their logic, reasoning and problem solving abilities with a variety of contextualised problems.

Of the entrants, six students scored highly and were then entered in the next round, the Maths Olympiad. This is an impressive feat as only the top scorers in

each school year are invited to take part in the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad papers.

The Olympiad took place in March and the results have just arrived back.

A huge congratulations to Daoyi whose outstanding mathematic skills have earned him a merit certificate. A fantastic achievement.

UKMT Junior Maths Challenge Selected students from Years 7 and 8 will be participating in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge on Thursday 27 April.

This annual event will involve up to 160 Manor High students.

The challenge involves answering 25 multiple choice questions in one hour and is sat in school under normal exam conditions.

Alter Ego Performance Manor High was chosen to pilot a new play from Alter Ego about extremism and radicalisation.

The production, called Going to Extremes, explores vulnerabilities to radicalisation and how to safeguard against them.

It is an innovative and powerful new play from the creative team behind the hugely successful Chelsea’s Choice.

Going to Extremes was developed out of a growing need to raise awareness around how radicalisation and extremism can affect young people.

The performance is suitable for young people in Year 8 and above and explores far-right political as well as religious based extremism.

Based on true events, the play uses story-telling to look at what happened to three young people, who each had their own vulnerabilities, that found themselves targeted by individuals or groups that wanted to use them for their own agenda.

Their stories are played out and examined in an attempt to understand how and why they were targeted and how young people can prevent this sort of thing happening by encouraging an open dialogue about the issues as well as empathy, understanding and respect for others' views and beliefs.

This project will be rolled out across all Leicestershire schools from April 2017.

Parental Survey As you know, we are always keen to take parental feedback as it helps us to move the school forwards at such a rapid pace.

With this in mind, we would be very grateful if you could respond to our latest parental survey. This will ask you for a range of standardised questions common to all schools with an additional opportunity to comment upon the areas which you value most at Manor High and something which you would like to change.

A recent email to all parents and carers provided the hyperlink to the survey (https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Parent-0417) which takes just a few minutes to complete.

Master Chef Master Chef is coming to boiling point in the Food Room at Manor High.

Chefs from The Yews restaurant have been working with students from Years 7 and 8 to see which students will be battling it out at the finals on 26 April to find the overall Master Chef.

The winner and runner up will then be representing the school for the ‘Bare Bones Budget’ inter-school competition at Gartree, which will be judged by the chefs from The Yews and John Stew from Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

Creative Arts News Manor Musicians Join with Professional Jazz Players On Tuesday 28 March ten students from Manor High joined with musicians from three other schools to perform with professional jazz musicians. The project, named The Jazz Ticket, was a lottery funded national project in which musicians worked with different schools to introduce and develop students’ knowledge and skills of the jazz style.

The event was planned to mark the centenary year of the birth of six giants of

jazz: Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Mongo Santamaria, Thelonious Monk, Tadd Dameron and Buddy Rich.

Our students held two workshops in which melodic and rhythmic ideas were explored, whilst encouraging each player to improvise around solo patterns.

The first performance took place at Martin High School in Anstey for an audience of Year 8 students. The evening concert was a culmination of the project held at The Venue, De Montfort University, sharing the stage with the Nu Civilisation Orchestra.

The talents and musicianship of everyone was astounding and our musicians show skill, talent and confidence, performing in front of a large and enthusiastic audience.

Well done to Daniel Karim, Kunle Atanda, Princess Atanda, Ashanni Chandarana, Nikita Basra, Adnan Ahmad, Shiv Hindocha, Hugo Woolhouse-Lorber, Cole Ricketts and William Moggeridge.

Learning South Leicestershire Singing Day with Howard Rose On Tuesday 4 April four schools from the Learning South Leicestershire schools’ music network met at Gartree High School to learn and perform several songs.

Howard Rose, a semi-finalist of The Voice and professional musician, led the day, teaching students the harmony parts to

Birdy’s songs, Wings and All of Me plus Lost Boy by Ruth B.

All of the students learned their parts so quickly, with some of Manor High’s students taking on solo performances too.

The day culminated in a recital for parents at 2pm, in which all of the songs were performed with energy and smiles.

Easter Concert is a Musical

Eggs-travaganza The spring term ended in style with a fantastic concert put on by our Music Department and our talented students.

There were performances by students from all year groups and both group and solo pieces.

Isla wowed the room with her rendition of the popular ballad, You Raise Me Up, while our singing group gave a heart-warming performance of Ruth B’s song Lost Boy, which was also sung at the LSL Singing Day (see left).

Other notable performances were Kunle, who played Amazing Grace on the harp he made himself. And Princess who was accompanied by Mr Necklan as she performed Greensleeves on the cello.

The evening ended with an orchestra finale and a standing ovation from the appreciative audience.

PE News ProtocolEd Sponsor New Kit The new basketball kits came just in time for the boys’ basketball semi-finals on 7 March. We lost to the team who went on to win the final comfortably, but played some really good basketball! A massive thanks to ProtocolEd the kit, it looked stunning.

Staff Footballers Well done to our staff on their football prowess. Manor High team played in a staff football tournament at Goals football centre after school on Friday 31 March against seven other local schools. They won the tournament on goal difference in a closely fought contest. Our members of staff that took part were Mr Flax, Mr Burbidge, Mr Healey, Mr King, Mr Taylor, Mr Handley and Mr Caldwell.

Primary Netball Competition We were pleased to welcome five primary schools to Manor for the Year 5/6 'High 5 Netball' competition using our three netball courts.

Brocks Hill, Brookside, Houghton on the Hill, Launde, Woodland Grange and Manor High battled it out for the winner’s trophy.

Each school played the others once with a huge crowd of parents present to

watch. It ended with the Manor team on top having won all of their matches!

The games were played in a good spirit with all children giving it their all and playing some great quality netball.

Hockey Quicksticks After all the excitement surrounding the school on Thursday 6 April, Mr Burbidge took six Year 6 students to Leicester Grammar School for the next round of the Year 6 Quicksticks (hockey) competition, as we had previously won the other competition.

Our team played magnificently well throughout the whole competition and we came top of our group with three wins out of three.

We then had to play a semi-final against the team who finished second in the opposite group in which we won 3-1 and progressed into the final.

In the final we played against Badgerbrook who gave us a good test and we succeeded with a 2-1 score line and were crowned Oadby & Wigston Champions.

The team will now be playing in the Summer Games Finals in June where they will be representing Oadby & Wigston and playing to try and become Leicestershire & Rutland Champions against schools from other areas.

Duke of Edinburgh As the DofE course progresses, our DofE students have been working hard to complete all of their three sections.

On Saturday 18 March Team Belinda Kirk and Team Ben Fogle had a practice camp at Beaumanor Hall.

After arriving in the afternoon they got to work setting up camp, with the tents going up in good time. After time to explore the grounds, the stoves came out and dinner was prepared. The rest of the evening was spent planning their routes for their walk the following day.

After breakfast and packing up the camp, they set off on their walks, taking them through the Charnwood countryside.

It was a great weekend and the perfect preparation for their practice expedition on Friday 12 May, followed by the final expedition on Friday 16 June.

Science News Big Bang Fair at the NEC Our Year 7 and Year 8 students recently enjoyed a visit to The Big Bang Fair, the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young people in the UK.

The Big Bang Fair is an award-winning combination of exciting theatre shows, interactive workshops and exhibits and careers information from STEM professionals. Our students spent the day being inspired by the numerous stands and exhibits hosted by major companies and universities.

There were plenty of hands on activities to get the students involved; they could try out virtual reality goggles, control robots, generate power for racing cars and even explore space travel!

Around the building were various stages that put on shows throughout the day; shrieks of excitement could be heard from students as controlled bangs went off.

The students returned to school with an expanded knowledge of STEM opportunities and, maybe most important of all, saw first-hand how what they learn at school is used by real people in real jobs.

British Science Week It was British Science Week from 10–19 March and to launch this at Manor High we held a non-uniform day on Friday 10 March, with all the money raised going to Cancer Research UK.

The students and teachers made a fantastic effort to dress up with a Science theme. We had an array of amazing costumes such as wacky scientists, the four seasons, the solar system, the periodic table and elements.

Our students always impress us with their continued and enthusiastic support of our themed charity days. In total £612.12 was raised for this worthy cause. Well done to everyone involved.

PiXL trip On Tuesday 14 March four students plus Mrs Mehta, Mr Greiff and Mr King attended a PiXL main conference.

PiXL is one of the largest groups of schools working and networking together in England.

The conference took place in Westminster and the students were involved in meeting and speaking to delegates about the PiXL Edge LORIC tutoring programme, which we embarked on here at Manor High in October 2016. Students are proud of the work they do and were keen to share best practice with others during the conference.

It wasn’t all hard work though as the students were also able to enjoy some of London’s famous sights during their trip.

It was an amazing opportunity and we were extremely honoured to have been chosen out of 800 other PiXL Edge schools.

9

Up for Debate On 28 March we took a team of students to participate in the PiXL Edge Up for Debate 2017 competition. Manor High went up against teams from almost 20 other schools.

The first debate saw the team arguing that music videos and lyrics with discriminatory content should be censored and was a comfortable win. The second saw them arguing against the motion that international adoption should be banned and they won here too. The final of the debates was impromptu and the team argued that zoos are cruel and should be banned.

Manor High School came out on top again and were one of the two teams who qualified for a place at the national finals. The final debate of the day was between the two qualifying teams and was over whether a medical professional should be able to override a parent’s choices for the health of a child and took place in front of around 100 people.

It was a very close contest between two outstanding teams and although Manor didn’t quite take the prize this time, they’re confident they’ll be more than ready for the national finals at Harrow School in July.

English SATs Preparations Year 6 have been putting in lots of hard work in preparation for their SATs. To support them further we have created a work-pack which we would like them to complete over the holidays. We would encourage students to read something every day. After Easter they will have two English lessons each day focusing on the skills and revision necessary to succeed in their SATs exams.

Knighton Knighton House entered 2017 with a bang! We have

continued to hold top position with the most House points as students have continued to excel in competitions, strongly represent in school sports teams and consistently follow our core values whilst achievement points are collected in lessons too. Our charity work for the British Heart Foundation is flourishing with K2's form fitness pledge and K1's collective lunchtime stalls where students could play games, buy snacks and take on a nerf challenge! Asher from K4 organised football competitions at lunchtimes last week where again, our successful vertical tutoring promoted a huge team spirit amongst all years.

We've recently had a fantastic opportunity to work with the BHF film crew in promoting their new product (see page 3). The day meant a lot to all of us and we will continue to raise funds for the BHF to further research, training and raise awareness.

It's been a pleasure introducing new students to Knighton and to help them settle in, it will be great to hear of new fundraising and competition ideas.

Soon after the Easter break our Year 6's shall undertake SATs exams, also older year groups will be absorbed in end of year exam revision, do have a restful and enjoyable two weeks, return with a passion for success and make each day count! Mrs Ghani

Bradgate It has been a busy term for Bradgate House with lots of

fundraising taking place, including a ‘prison ball’ competition involving students and staff organised by the student leadership team. This was a successful event and everyone involved had lots of fun. We have also had a bake sale with students from Bradgate baking sweet and savoury snacks to sell at break time raising money for Rainbows Children Hospice. Alongside this we are also holding an Easter Raffle with a huge Easter Bunny as first prize. It is great to see so many students wanting to get involved in fundraising for such a worthy cause, I hope this continues next term.

It is fabulous to see such a positive attitude from the students in Bradgate House and this is reflected in the House Points given, with Bradgate now being second with over 204,000 points! We are also first for attendance with a fantastic 96.7%. Well done everybody, let’s keep it up and get to the top in points next term! Miss Booth

Clarendon Clarendon are preparing for a busy summer term. The

Clarendon tutor groups are busy supporting the Year 6 students in preparation for their upcoming SATS. In addition the students are also well underway of logging activities and providing evaluations as part of the LORIC programme.

Clarendon are currently standing in third place with achievement points. We can easily regain second place with your

help! Take part in the competition to design a road safety leaflet, I know there are plenty of artists out there who would love to see their designs in print and collect lots of achievement points.

Well done to C5 for raising £60 after hosting a bake sale for Wishes4Kids. We are continually looking for fun fundraising opportunities for this charity so put your thinking hats on, let’s continue to raise plenty of money. We are also looking forward to welcoming a guest speaker from Wishes4Kids to our house during an assembly after the Easter break.

Good luck to Ilsa (Clarendon) and Mya (Watermead) with their sponsored run they are completing in April to raise money for Cancer Research. Both girls led a very moving assembly early this term to promote their event. If you have not sponsored them yet there is still plenty of time to do so.

Happy holidays, stay safe and have fun. Mrs Wale

Watermead This week has been very busy for Watermead and many other

houses. For Watermead we have been raising money our house charity WaterAid. As Easter is approaching, we had a raffle to win an Easter Hamper, which raised £91.73.

We are second on the leader board for raising the most money, which is fantastic. Watermead’s attendance has gone up which will hopefully move us up on the leader board.

Unfortunately, we are sitting last for our House Points but if everyone can make a huge effort to get involved and work well to achieve more points, I am sure we can move up the leader board after the holiday! Safwaan Sheikh

“Be Safe, Park Safely!” Road Safety Competition and Campaign We continue to work with our local police and traffic officers to make our neighbourhood as safe as possible for children. We work hard with the caring majority to eliminate selfish and inconsiderate road use and parking.

On Thursday 27 April we will be hosting Year 7 Road Safety Day in the Study Centre, where every Year 7 students will receive a talk from John Budulis, Road Safety Co-Ordinator for Leicestershire Police.

Following on from the daytime talks, we will be holding an evening event at the school for the local community to attend from 6.00 to 7.00pm, again on Thursday 27 April. The evening will be led and supported by the school and the police. Parking on yellow double and zig-zagged line will be a key focus. We are planning for buses for next year so that many of the car journeys will no longer be necessary.

At this event we will be launching the two school parking safety videos that were created by Manor High School in response to illegal and dangerous

vehicles parking outside the school during start and finish times. Many of the offending drivers are parents/guardians of students.

The first video, titled Park Safe, Stay Safe, has students being asked a series of questions on what their opinions are on illegal car parking outside their school. The second video is a dramatization and highlights examples of illegal parking on the yellow zig zags, double yellow lines, obstruction of pavements and driveways. Students and school staff, along with the help of the local police beat team have created improvised scenarios.

Both videos will serve as an educational tool for Manor High School, and will be shown in a variety of settings such as parents evenings, planned school events and community meetings. As the message is being delivered by Manor High students, it will help to educate parents in recognising their behaviour, and hopefully change attitudes. When messages are sent out by young people it can have a far greater impact and perspective.

Be the Change On Wednesday 15 March our Year 8 students met their business leaders at the Hastings Direct offices in Leicester as part of Be The Change.

This education programme, which is run by Hastings Direct in partnership with LoveLocalJobs.com and Humanutopia, aims to raise the aspirations of students (aged 13-14), helping them to remove barriers that may make them disengaged at school and provide them with life skills to take into the future.

Business volunteers meet the students to encourage further understanding on developing life skills to take forward into work life.

During the day, the students learnt about the history of the business and “The Hastings Way” before gaining some invaluable experience while working alongside the customer service staff at Hastings Direct.

This was followed by another event on Tuesday 4 April, when Manor High were delighted to take part in the annual celebrations of the Be the Change project with Humanutopia. This event was held at Leicester Tigers’ Welford Road Stadium and was sponsored by Hastings Direct.

The CEO of Hastings Direct, Gary Hoffman, gave an inspiring speech about having a positive impact on others and a growth mindset. He explained how he had risen through banking to become the CEO of Barclays and had presented the Premiership Trophy for six consecutive years before moving between the two organisations.

Sanad, from Manor High School, was first to stand up and speak spontaneously and from the heart in front of all of the other schools. Juwairiyah explained how the Be the Change project with Humanutopia has changed her for the better.

Our students were a real credit to the school. Every time Graham Moore, one of Humanutopia’s co-founders, asked for volunteers to speak, Manor High students were the first to take the microphones and to address the large audience which comprised students and staff from a range of the best secondary schools.

We have worked extensively with Humanutopia this year and will be following up and building upon this important work next year. Find out more at www.humanutopia.com
