Historians and Civil War Buffs: Indulge Your Passion! The Civil War comes to vivid life with diverse and specialized courses that delve deeper than the typical history course that focuses on names, dates and events. Our courses are taught by members of the Delaware Valley Civil War Round Table and are Act 48 approved.

Take courses independently or enroll in the Civil War Certificate program. To earn a certificate, you must take eight courses, four must be core courses. www.manor.edu/coned/civilwar

THE CIVIL WAR INSTITUTE

*Core Courses **Elective Courses

**Medicine in the Civil War.6 CEUs – 6 hrs – Act 48 approved Explore the work of doctors and nurses who ministered to the sick and wounded before antibiotics and the science of bacteriology existed, when crude sanitation and igno-rance of the dangers of polluted water were deadly. In the Civil War, more soldiers died of disease than of battle wounds. The course will explain how military doctors be-came medical explorers in treating disease, and why there were so many amputations. You will see how the medicine of the day met the horror of the battlefield.

Mondays, June 10, 17, 24 6:30pm - 8:30pm • $69Herb Kaufman, M.Ed., Instructor

**Causes of the Civil War.6 CEUs – 6 hrs – Act 48 approved Understand the factors that led up to America being at war with itself. In the first session, you will learn about the seeds of independence and slavery. The second session will cover topics about the “nul-lification crisis” and the “manifest destiny.” The third and final session will examine “popular sovereignty” and end with “the gathering storm.”

Wednesdays, June 12, 19, 26 6:30pm - 8:30pm • $69Roger Arthur, Instructor

**The Chancellorsville Campaign.6 CEUs – 6 hrs – Act 48 approved Commonly known as Lee’s greatest victory, the Battle of Chancellorsville and its atten-dant campaign was one of the most critical actions in the course of the war. Gen. “Fighting” Joe Hooker, recently appointed commander of the superb Army of Potomac and its overwhelming 130,000 troops, faced Gen. Robert E. Lee and his beleaguered Army of Northern Virginia, reduced to a mere 60,000 men. The campaign was played out in the Fredericksburg, VA area in the tangled wilderness near the cross-roads at the Chancellorsville mansion.

Wednesdays, July 17, 24, 31 6:30pm - 8:30pm • $69Paula Gidjunis, Instructor

**No Peace in the Valley: Legends of the Shenandoah.6 CEUs – 6 hrs – Act 48 approved In Virginia’s tranquil Shenandoah Valley, most residents wanted no part of war. But the Valley’s fertility made it a granary, and its topography made it an avenue of inva-sion, making war inevitable in the Valley. Two generals - the South’s Stonewall Jack-son in 1862 and the North’s Philip Sheri-dan in 1864 - became legendary for the masterful campaigns they fought here. This three-session course concentrates on these campaigns and their impact on the Valley’s residents and the outcome of the Civil War.

Mondays, August 5, 12, 19 6:30pm - 8:30pm • $69Jerry Carrier, Instructor
