Dear Friend of MANNA,New challenges are facing all of us during these stressful times. Nothing compares, however, to the struggles being fought by the nearly 2,000 individuals MANNA willserve this year.
A new sense of urgency is emerging at MANNA. Donors, staff and volunteers aredoing whatever needs to be done in order to improve health and deliver nourishment
for our neighbors who are battling serious illness. For those who are losing the battle, MANNA iscommitted to providing palliative care and nutritional comfort.
Welcome to NOURISH, our new magazine. This replaces the seasonal newsletterWhat’s Cooking. Thesepages are meant to inform and inspire our extended family so that the MANNA mission can continue. These stories would not be possible without your goodness and support, for which we are truly grateful.
Please continue to help us nourish. Donate. (There is an envelope inside.) Volunteer. Tell your friendsabout MANNA. Join us at Shut Up & Dance on March 28, 2009.
We need you now more than ever. Thank you.

“I remember reading an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer describing MANNA’s expansion of services toinclude all life-threatening illnesses. It stayed in my mind because I was caring for my brother who wasdying of pancreatic cancer. I looked for organizations like MANNA with services in his town, but therewere none.” A short time later he died. And when he did, Karen had lost all her immediate family tocancer.
Soon afterwards, Karen, with no family to help her, once again began her own battle with cancer. It was her third cancer diagnosis and it resultedin bi-lateral breast surgery.
“I knew the pain from surgery and the fatiguefrom chemo would leave me almost helpless. Then I remembered the MANNA story in thepaper. I asked my care providers to contactMANNA for help.”
Today, Karen says she’s very grateful. Not onlyfor the delicious and nutritious meals, but also forthe caring spirit from the people at MANNA.“Sometimes fear and loneliness would get the bestof me. Then the MANNA volunteer would arrivewith my meals and we would talk and I knew I wasn’t alone in my battle.”
Months later, Karen let us know she was stronger, physically and emotionally, and that she was readyto return to “the world of the living.” She no longer needed MANNA meals.
We heard from Karen at Thanksgivingwhen she called to buy a pie for herholiday celebration, and she is stilldoing well.
We are inspired by Karen’s courage andspirit. Thank you, Karen, for sharingyour story with us.

Primary Diagnoses of MANNA ClientsJuly – December 2008

When I firstheard thatMANNA hadexpanded itsmeal services,I was so excited. We all knew what
a great impact they had over the yearson clients with HIV/AIDS. FinallyI would have a way to help my clientsrestore their nutritional stability. That’sso vital for people who are diagnosedwith chronic kidney disease.
I have been working as a renal dietitianfor 27 years. My patients struggle tounderstand all the intricacies of eatingfor optimal nourishment. It’s hard forthem to think of food as medicine,as part of their road to better health.
Often foods they thought were healthyare suddenly too high in potassium, sodium, calcium or phosphorus tobe good for them. And they don’t get
enough protein. Then sometimes theyhave coexisting conditions like diabetesand that makes it really tough on them.
Fortunately, MANNA can customizemeals to accommodate both a patient’scomplicated medical needs and theirindividual preferences like “no pork”or “no seafood.”
And now when our patients are toosick or fatigued to shop and cookfor themselves, MANNA is there, delivering 100% of theirnutritional needs, threemeals a day, seven daysa week, allyear long.
MANNAmakesit easy for ourclients to qualify. The referralprocess isfocused on improving
the health of our patients. There areno financial restrictions for MANNA’sservices.
The MANNA social worker reviews themedical history and current nutritionaldiagnosis of each individual. Then theMANNA nutritionist determines themost optimal meal program. Resultsare reviewed every six months. Someof my patients need six more monthsuntil the desired results are achieved. The improvement is amazing.
I’ve been to MANNA. I’veseen firsthand the love put
into all the workthat goes onthere...the planning, the caring, thecooking. I honestlybelieve many of mypatients would notbe alive today
without MANNAmeals.

Keeping Them CloseA profile on Nina Carducci
Why do you support MANNA?Several of my friends have died fromAIDS and that experience introducedme to MANNA. In some ways, mymonthly gift to MANNA keeps themclose to me. They were very specialpeople.
What did you think whenMANNA expanded its missionbeyond HIV/AIDS?I think it was great! Very sick people aretoo tired to take care of themselves andeat properly. I’m so glad that MANNAcan help more people get better.
Do you realize what differenceyour generosity makes? We all should do what we can. I justwish I could do more. The universe
has blessed me and this is my way ofgiving back and making a difference.MANNA is a great cause to support.
Nina has made nearly 100 gifts to MANNAsince 1993, providing well over 1,000nutritious and delicious meals to our clients.

Corporate volunteerism offers companies a special way to reach peoplewithin their communities, where they live, work and play. Volunteerprojects help improve morale, especially in tough economic times, andbuild a spirit of teamwork essential for any successful business. Duringthe average volunteer shift at MANNA, you can’t tell the senior vicepresident from the salesperson or receptionist. Everyone dons an apronand hairnet as they chop the onions, peel the carrots, stir the soup andpackage the meals.
In recent months, the MANNA family has welcomed volunteers fromthe US Airways Do-Crew, Bank of America, Elsevier Publishing andWells Fargo. Associates from Godiva Chocolates not only worked inthe kitchen for four hours, but brought along 25 pounds of deliciouschocolate! Many local groups enjoy their time at MANNA so much thatthey come on a regular monthly or bi-monthly schedule. A crew fromPECO energizes our kitchen every month; PricewaterhouseCoopersfind kitchen work not taxing at all; and Subaru navigates with excellence.New to MANNA this past year, groups from SEI Investments andPrincipal Financial Group joined dedicated veterans from PrudentialFox and Roach and the law firm Dilworth Paxon LLP.
TD Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of TD Bank, is one ofMANNA’s Gold Program Sponsors for 2009. They provide muchneeded financial support and also demonstrate a passionate commitmentto community service throughout the year. Besides regular volunteervisits in the MANNA kitchen, TD Bank employees make up one ofour leading sales teams for Pie in the Sky. For years the bank has evenorganized an annual “kick-off ” event, providing bank employees witha mouth-watering pie-tasting experience.
Another Gold Program Sponsor, Paul Rabinowitz Glass, donated glasswall partitions with Glazers Union Local 252 to MANNA’s offices. “Weare very happy to be able to help MANNA and all the great things theydo in our city,” says Mark Rabinowitz, president of Rabinowitz Glass.“We believe in MANNA and hope to inspire others to support them too.”
