Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2013/14 Annual Report

Let me start by stating that I feel nothing but pride for the way our Club performed this season, both on and off the field. On the field, whilst just falling short of silverware in several grades and only 13 runs short of making the First Grade grand final, our overall results were impressive, with four out of 5 grades making the finals (only Club to achieve this!), 4ths and 5ths made the Grand Final and our First XI were the only team to play in the finals of all three competitions. We also won all 5 grades on three occasions this season, a feat I can’t ever recall happening in my 36 years at the Club! It was a huge turnaround from last season where no teams made the finals. We finished 8th in the Club Champs, up 7 places from 15th last year. We were only 47 points from 4th place. So everyone should feel a sense of achievement in the progress that the Club has made in the past 12 months. In addition to our success, our brothers at Warringah Shires Cricket Club managed to get five out of 6 teams into the finals and won the Frank Gray (Under 24) Shield yet again – so our Junior Pathway and cricket on the peninsula is in very good shape! So the results were a pretty massive turnaround from last season and this success is due from a collective effort from everyone involved at the Club. At the top of that list are our Coaches Shawn Bradstreet and Phil Marks. It was just wonderful to welcome Phil back to his rightful home in the Waratah family and the pair did an amazing job this year. Of course, they received good support from Adam Crosthwaite as Batting Coach. To boast three players of First Class experience in our Coaching ranks is again, something few other Clubs can boast and I

believe we have the best coaching personnel in the competition! It was also fantastic to welcome back Life Member Gavin Fletcher, who was a revelation to the players with his cameo sessions as a bowling mentor. The captains also do a heap of work each season and their roles are crucial. Thanks to Tim Cruickshank, Ryan Bonnor, Craig Little, Warren Evans and Dave Farrell, the latter who led their respective teams to grand finals. And thanks to our PGs captain Mitch Pugh and Green Shield captains Jake Carden and Joe Graham. The individual performances are well documented in this report and some of them were just outstanding. On the rep scene, congratulations to Steve “SOK” O’Keefe who was a member of the victorious NSW Sheffield Shield team and also the leading bowler in the competition with 41 wickets at the miserly average of 20. Surely the selectors now have no choice but to reward him with a well-deserved Test cap for the series v Pakistan in Dubai in October? And some great news that Ahillen Beadle has been awarded a BBL contract with Sydney Thunder after his brilliant season which included back to back tons in the finals series. Well done boys! Our wonderful Committee do a mountain of work off the field and I specifically want to make special mention of the outstanding contributions of Steve Beatty (Hon Secretary) and Scotty McLachlan (Hon Treasurer), in their first year in these roles. They’ve been incredible. But a big thanks to all the Committee namely my Deputy President and good mate David Gainsford, Joel Mason (congrats to Joel and

Nicole on their recent marriage!), Greg Boyer, Simon Lyon, Brad Lewis, Langdon Gould and John Warn. I would like to congratulate John who in his first year as Chairman of CNSW, has been instrumental in the Blues winning back the Sheffield Shield. Off the field, we continue to thrive with our “Manly for Manly” community programs and our sponsorship funding hitting record levels this season, courtesy of Joel Mason. I cannot begin to tell you how much work this guy devotes to the Club! A huge thanks to all our sponsor partners who are mentioned in this report – all of your contributions are extremely valued. We’re also delighted to announce that TravelSIM have agreed to extend their term as our major sponsor, so a huge thanks to Jamien Zimmerman and his team for their continued support of our Club. Whenever you travel overseas, a TravelSIM is almost as important as your passport. You can’t leave home without it! And this season was our 17th in partnership with the Mounties Group/Harbord Diggers which has to be one of the longest sponsorships in peninsula sporting history. So thank you to Greg Pickering, Dale Hunt, Greg Silk and all the team. It is important we acknowledge all our sponsors and support them where we can by utilizing their services and offerings……here’s a list of our loyal partners below. So when booking a stay locally, use Mark Stanley at Quest Manly. When buying or selling property, use Richard Davies & James Economides at Red Property (wonderful to have James & his new brand back on board with the Club!) And if you need a loan for the new property, go visit Drew & Jodie Johnson at BOQ Manly

And to try the best boutique beers in the country, visit Jaron Mitchell & the team at 4 Pines Brewing Manly If we lose a loved one, go to Ann Wilson and Andrew Pulsford at Ann Wilson Funerals If the car needs a service, visit Keith Tucker at Ultra Tune Manly For the best pics, of course we use the guru, Ian Bird at Ian Bird Photography Thanks also to Warringah Council, Manly Council and The Manly Daily for their continued support. Thanks to our Patrons, Manly Mayor Jean Hay, Warringah Mayor Michael Regan and of course Mike Baird MP – we would all like to congratulate Mike on being elected as NSW Premier. A great result for a great man and we are very honoured to have him as our Patron. I would also like to congratulate Craig “Jeannie” Little on winning the Keith Marks Clubman of the Year award. A fitting finale for an outstanding contribution to the Club not only this season, but throughout his wonderful career. We will miss him! And I’d like to acknowledge our other brilliant volunteers who rarely seek or get accolades, but they are the heart and soul of our Club who turn up every week and do great work for us - namely Geoff Rogers, Gordon Currie, Alan Wright, Donny “Dollars” Sellin, Dave “Lozza” Gardner and Bobby Rollins. All amazing people! Also thanks to the organising committee of Katinga Schroeder, Tim Blank, Steve Beatty and Simon Lyon for making the 2013 Ashes Lunch such a success. In closing, this was my tenth year as Honorary President and never has this Club and the people within it, meant more to me, than in this past season. I unfortunately had my battle with Cancer after being diagnosed just before the

season, on 2 September. It was a shock and the ensuing months was something nobody ever wants to go through. Those that have, realise how important your support networks are. The Club became my second family throughout this difficult period and the messages of support were truly inspirational and for that, I will be eternally grateful. Unfortunately, the Club has had more than its fair share of this mongrel

disease of late, so make sure you “seize the day” and embrace your health and happiness! Let’s make sure we have a big 2014/15 season and improve even further on the great platforms we have in place! Andrew Fraser MWDCC Honorary President 2013/14

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2013/14 Annual Report

To the wider cricket community involved with Manly Warringah District Cricket Club, the Committee has the pleasure in submitting the 136th Annual Report including the financial statements covering the 2013/14 cricket season. The club entered teams in the five Sydney Grade competitions, along with the First Grade Limited Overs and T-20 competitions, the Poidevin-Gray and AW Green Shield competitions. The club had a very strong season in 2013/14. There were no premierships to celebrate, but our grade sides performed with distinction with 4 of the 5 teams qualifying for the finals - the only club to be so well represented. Both 4th and 5th Grade progressed to the Grand Final, eventually losing in weather affected conditions. First grade went within a whisker of qualifying for the Grand Final, and were a force in all 3 competitions. The culmination of the strong performances saw the club lift from 15th to 8th in the SCA Club Championship. The 2013/14 season Results were as follows (prior season in brackets):

Club Championship 8th (15th)

1st Grade 5th (17th)

1st Grade - Limited Over 3rd (11th)

1st Grade - T-20 7th ( 3rd)

2nd Grade 16th (16th)

3rd Grade 4th (10th)

4th Grade 3rd (9th)

5th Grade 3rd (16th)

Poidevin-Gray 15th (10th)

AW Green Shield 16th (13th)

The successful bounce-back from a difficult prior season is a credit to the playing group and especially the coaches - capably lead by Head Coach Shawn Bradstreet. The coaching group were tireless throughout the season. The players were challenged with a tough preseason program and this paid dividends with the club jumping out to a very successful start to the season. Throughout the season trainings were well attended and very professional. I would like to congratulate the coaches in their commitment - rarely did I visit a game when one of Shawn's team was not in attendance. The player charter they implemented was a constant reference point for discipline and performance, which I believe had a telling impact on the players. When compared to the prior season, the key performance benchmark of centuries and 5 wickets hauls is remarkable:

Centuries - 2013/14: 24 centuries (2012/13 - 9 centuries)

5 Wicket Hauls - 2013/14: 23 times (2012/13 - 11 times)

While outlining player achievement it was great to see Craig "Genie" Little win the Clubman of the Year award. What a fitting tribute to a fine clubman, inspirational Captain and above all fierce competitor. Congratulations to all the players and coaches. Shawn was ably assisted by Phil Marks, Adam Crosthwaite, Bobby Rollins, Dave Gardiner, Jack Ritchie and Gavin Fletcher.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2013/14 Annual Report

Thanks Chris Hynes who held the role of Chairman of Selectors in high esteem, coordinating the demanding administrative tasks and player communication in a very professional fashion. The club would also like to acknowledge each Captain of our teams. There is a huge amount of work these guys do before getting on the field, and the success in 2013/14 is in no small part due to their commitment. Off the field MWDCC was directed by a very capable committee of highly motivated, energetic volunteers. Personally it was a pleasure to be involved with this group. A special mention needs to be made about the club's motivational leader. Andrew Fraser found himself in a tough battle late in 2013 and overcame a very serious condition to bounce back bigger than ever. It is a tribute to his character that even through this tough episode he only ever saw the "glass as overflowing - let alone half full!" Well done Frase, MWDCC are very fortunate to have you at the helm. In 2014/15 the committee will continue to work on defining the role of each member. The demands in running a club in the premier club cricket competition in NSW / Australia keep increasing, and our goal at MWDCC is to stay ahead of the pack. Our intention is to develop key roles to provide a stronger support network for our captains and managers, strengthen our club communications and increase our effort engaging the community. The 2013/14 financial position of the club is very good thanks to Scott McLachlan who managed the accounts so efficiently and effectively.

Joel Mason has again been legendary in generating revenue and liaising with our Sponsors, without them there is no club - and we are indebted to all of them. Joel has managed the club communication keeping us both amused and informed. Joel was ably assisted by Ted Lindsay in running our "Manly for Manly” community events. The club participated in 4 charity events, strongly supported by our playing group. The club's relationship with the junior clubs and schools in the area is 1st class. In addition to coaching clinics each junior club has a player attending their trainings and club presentations. The club is fortunate to have close relationships with our junior cricket community, Warringah Cricket Club and Cricket NSW. These relationships are managed carefully and diligently by David Gainsford and Greg Boyer with their exceptional Pathway Program. Both Gains and Butch are to be thanked for stepping into the Green Shield coaching role at the last minute. This was a huge commitment of time over the holidays. The club is very proud to have John Warn on the committee, and he is to be congratulated on the role he plays as Chairman of Cricket NSW. Langdon Gould is our wise counsel, with his wealth of experience and Simon Lyon is steadily getting our clubrooms into shape and ensured the training nets at Manly Oval were set up safely, and helping coordinate our functions. To the whole committee, many thanks for all the hard work.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2013/14 Annual Report

A club does not function without a core group of dedicated volunteers and MWDCC is extremely fortunate to have a great group who have helped out during the season. A special thanks to -

Our scorers - Geoff Rogers, Gordon Currie, Don Sellin and Langdon Gould.

Our Managers - Michael Sheapherd (Juice), Dave Gardiner, and Al Wright.

Jane Webber and Ross Wiblin for managing our clothing and day to day demands at the grounds

Our communications group - Sam Webber, Warren Evans ,Luke Grant ,Sam Alexander and Adam Gummer

Ted Lindsay for managing our community events, Bob Brenner for liaising with Councils and Tony Graham for constantly helping out.

We hope our "Waratah Worker" initiative will continue to grow in the season to come and to all those that helped during the year, many

thanks. A little by many carries the load. In closing 2013/14 was a very good year for MWDCC, there was success and great improvement. The forthcoming year will have challenges - not only on the ground - as we look to improve our training facilities, and await a decision by Manly Council on the use of Manly Oval in 2014/15. We will again need the support from Jean Hay the Mayor of Manly, Michael Regan the Mayor of Warringah and our local State Member of Parliament, the Premier of NSW Mr Mike Baird. We are truly fortunate to have such an outstanding group of community focused public officials as Patrons of our Club. All the very best to everyone in the off season, and may the 2014-15 season continue the trajectory of success! Steve Beatty Honorary Secretary 2013/14

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2013/14 Annual Report

The 2013/14 season saw the launch of our extremely successful Manly for Manly community program. This program integrates all of our various community components into one.

The Manly for Manly program is designed to provide our players, officials, employees, parents and volunteers with a vehicle to provide the local Northern Beaches community with as much time, knowledge and help as possible. It involves the members of the club giving up their free time to help those not as fortunate as some, or those who have yet to realize their potential on the cricket field.

One of the strongest points of our Manly for Manly program is the association of all of our players to Junior Club’s around the Northern beaches. This resulted in over 30 coaching sessions taking place throughout the summer, most of them with 2-3 players at a time and some involving over 30 junior cricketers. One of the most valuable assets of the Waratah is the huge amount of knowledge and talent within our playing group, so providing the next generation of Waratahs with access to this is a simple and easy aspect of our program.

The Waratahs were involved in various charity events throughout the season, most notably the Manly Relay for Life, the ever successful Movember, the March for Melonoma, and the McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps day.

The Waratahs also held 3 junior coaching clinics at Manly Oval throughout the summer, all of which were organized and run by the playing group. These clinics provide specific skills coaching to each of the attendee’s, as well as helping our players get a feel for coaching and what it is like to help out the youngsters in the district. The experience they get here puts them in great stead for the future.

The Waratahs are also involved with our charity partner Stewart House, making 3 visits throughout the 2013/14 season. This involves 3 players visiting the under-privileged kids of Stewart House at Curl Curl beach and taking them through a game of beach cricket. The simple joys in life are quite often the best.

The best part of this program is that it involves our playing group taking the time out of their busy schedule to help put back into the local community or help young cricketers on the Peninsula. We should never underestimate how the young cricketers in our district look up to grade cricketers, and this presents a great opportunity to be a real role model for these kids. The Manly for Manly program will be back bigger and better in 2014/15.

This year we once again pitched our past team vs the rock stars of the present to battle it out for the Fiona Lyon cup.

Fiona Lyon was our club treasurer and canteen manager who tragically passed away last year. Her battle with breast cancer is a timely reminder that we all need to live life to the fullest and chase your dreams. But it’s also a reminder that we should always keep our health as our priority, and make sure you get regular check-ups.

After being on the end of a hiding last season, the past team were keen on taking back the title, putting out a particularly strong team to help take back the cup…. and take back the cup they did. Some great bowling from Simon Waddington, who at 40+ is still good enough to bowl in higher grades, led to only a reasonable total being put on the scoreboard from the present team, Craig Little the star with the bat. The past team were then able to chase it down easily, with Phil Marks, Shawn Bradstreet and Simon Couch all in the runs.

Highlights of the day were Mitch Cleary dropping the first 2 catches of his cricket career, one of them a slip which resulted in the ball almost hitting his head, Joel Mason showing what a terrible bowler he really is, and Craig Little dominating with the bat.

Of course the day was played in good spirit and doubled as our pink stumps day for the Jane McGrath Foundation. It was a great day of community fun and helping raise awareness for the awful disease.

The Manly Cup is the ultimate schools competition on the Northern Beaches, with 2 competitions being run, the Junior U/15s and Senior Schools Competition. The finals of both of these competitions was held at Manly Oval on Tuesday 18th March, 2014 The Manly Warringah District Cricket Club has been the sponsor of this competition for the last 3 years. It is imperative not only that we keep school cricket in the district alive and working in parallel with junior Saturday morning cricket, but also important that we allow the best schools to play at the sacred turf that is Manly Oval. The final was a great day with the U/15’s the 1st game, between St Paul's and Balgowlah Boys. The match went to the last over with St Paul's winning by 9 runs. 2nd game was for the senior’s title, held between St Paul's Vs St Augustines, with St Paul's winning convincingly by 40 runs. There were many Manly junior rep players on show which again showed how much talent we have in our area. Captain of the juniors winning team was Joel Wood (Green shield this year & U16s NSW Academy) and seniors Sam Gainsford, a member of the 2013/14 MWDCC 3rd grade side. St Paul's College dominated the day winning both Trophies’ which is a first. Thanks to both Umpires Brian Ferguson & Graham White, who gave up their time for the day, but also to all of the volunteers that make school cricket continue to thrive on the Northern Beaches. Special mention to Russell Rodgers who organizes all the draws, grounds and communicates with all the schools. Thanks so much for all his efforts.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2013/14 Annual Report

Following the turmoil of last season our goal for the season was simply to improve our ladder positions across all grades. We are happy to report that after putting in a well prepared pre-season, which the players embraced and threw themselves into, the positive results followed throughout the season across most of the grades. This season we were fortunate to have an outstanding coaching group which allowed us to have flexibility with our training sessions. The Narrabeen/Manly split sessions were a hit with the playing group. It gave them the opportunity to work in smaller groups and on specifics of their games, something that has never been offered in previous seasons. That was then followed by a club session at Manly Oval where we had an amazing coaching group helping the two of us out including Adam Crosthwaite imparting his vast knowledge upon all, Bobby Rollins working with the batters, Gavin Fletcher working with the bowlers, David Gardner running fielding drills, Wrighty running the nets, Juice helping out with everything else, just brilliant!! All aspects of the game were covered and combined with a better training ethic we started to see the results immediately on the playing field. The numbers at training were fantastic throughout the season which was a credit to all players and we thank you for jumping on board and embracing what we were trying to achieve. First Grade performed well making the finals in all three forms, a huge turnaround from the previous season. In two day cricket we improved from 17th to 5th, in one day cricket from 11th to 3rd and made the finals in T20 for the second successive season. Our one day Grand Final opportunity was unfortunately washed out. There were some outstanding individual efforts including our Senior Player of the Year, Ahillen Beadle scoring 871 runs at 51.24 which also included

three centuries and four 50’s. Add 28 wickets at 25.25 and back to back hundreds in the Quarter and Semi Finals and he really came of age and took his game to the next level. This was recognised and he has signed a Big Bash League contract with the Sydney Thunder for next season. Other fantastic performances included a collective 10 centuries by the 1st grade team, Crossy with four of them proving his quality and value to Sydney Grade Cricket. Dan Babula led the attack with 49 wickets at 15.57 including twice taking 5 wickets in an innings. Second grade had a challenging season finishing in 16th position as they had the previous season. They started well with three wins and then unfortunately only recorded two more wins for the remainder of the season. Third grade improved from 10th last season to finish 4th only to then bow out in the Quarter Finals. Adam Gummer scored two centuries and led the batting. Fourth grade also improved from 9th to 3rd, progressed to the Grand Final only to be robbed of an opportunity to win by the weather. Rowan Hamman proved the backbone of the batting breaking the 4th grade batting record and scoring 4 centuries along the way. Josh Peterson also broke the 4th grade wicket keeping record. In addition, 4’s skipper Wazza Evans took his 700th grade wicket for the club, an outstanding achievement. Fifth grade also improved from 16th last season to finish 3rd and made in to the Grand Final. Unfortunately the weather also affected that outcome. Finally in the Club Championship we moved from 15th to finish the season in 8th position, 47 points from 4th spot. A great achievement and only the start of us heading further up the ladder in seasons to come.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2013/14 Annual Report

A true barometer of improvement is individual performance and this season as a club we scored 23 centuries compared to 9 last season. Our bowling also improved with our bowlers taking five wickets in an innings on 20 occasions compared to 11 the previous season. So all in all it was a much improved year and something we can all be proud of. The ground work has been laid for next season and with continued commitment to improve and work hard as individuals and as a club, the results will follow. To the coaching staff, thank you for your dedication this season. To have Adam Crosthwaite working with all the keepers was outstanding. Bobby Rollins’ efforts with the batsmen was instrumental in improving the batting. Dave Gardner running the fielding drills was awesome and appreciated by all the players. To have Gavin Fletcher back involved and working with the bowlers was a huge bonus for the club and the results showed. Alan Wright did his normal great work with the nets and was a great help with everything to do with training.

Finally, it was just great to see Michael ‘Juice’ Shepheard back involved and he was recognised at the presentation night winning the President’s Award, a huge honour. Well done mate! Thank you to all the Captains for your commitment this season, it was a pleasure to work with you all. We really enjoyed forming plans throughout the season and you all led your teams by example and with passion. To all the groundsmen at Manly Oval, Grahams Reserve and Mike Pawley Oval, thank you for all your hard work you put into the grounds throughout the season. Lastly, we would like to say big thank you to our committee for helping us put in place a coaching staff and training structure unrivalled in the competition and one we are proud to be a part of. See you all in the pre-season. Shawn Bradstreet and Phil Marks Head Coaches 2013/14

Congratulations to Sydney University for winning the 2013/14 premiership. It seems unfair to have walked away from such a successful season empty handed. Unfortunately there are no accolades for playing great cricket all season when you don’t perform come finals time. There is no doubt we went close this season, really close. Weather robbed us of an opportunity to take out the one-day competition which was certainly set up for us to win, we were outplayed in the T20 quarter final and our 2 day season was snatched from our grasp in the blink of an eye lid. One bad session of cricket undoing a season of great performances. There is no doubt that we need to learn to play stronger, fearless cricket come finals time. You don’t win premierships by being conservative and waiting for the game to fall your way, you win them by getting on the front foot and taking on the pressure situations. We will have learnt a lot from our demise this season and I know it will go a long way to taking things one step further next season. To Winger and Skid, two great friends of mine. Your support and dedication to myself and our team was unbelievable this season. It’s no coincidence that the club had such a successful season with you guys at the helm. You deserved at least one premiership this season and although they didn’t eventuate, it will taste even sweeter when they come in a flourish over the coming seasons. Juicey “Crikey” Shepherd, the boys loved every second of you being around this season. You bring a sense of respect and passion to our dressing room. Your commitment and emotions are something I can’t put in to words. Thanks for all the great memories not just this year but for the past 16 years we have been playing together.

To everyone else- Frase, Scotty McLachlan, Geoff Rogers, Davey Gardener, Chris Hynes, the entire committee and anyone else that has supported us throughout the season, Thank you! Our team is surrounded by great people and if performances on the field were a reflection of our support off it, we would have taken out all three competitions this season. Our team: Jack Ritchie I think Jack may have forgotten just how good a year he had. At Christmas time his game was in the best place it has ever been. Scoring 1st grade runs at will and not only getting an opportunity at representative level but peeling off a hundred in his first game. Jack will have learnt a lot about the highs and the lows of cricket this season. As he learns to level these emotions out and accept scoring runs for what it is, not what it brings, he will become a prolific run scorer for the club and a first class cricketer. Luke Edgell In a way this was a breakthrough season for bomber. With a bit of luck he could have easily scored 2-3 hundreds. When he was on he would dominate attacks at the top of the order like no other player in the competition. Once Bomber learns to understand just how good a player he is, he will find a lot more consistency in his game. His dedication to the team was a step up this year. Adam Crosthwaite 4 hundreds was an incredible achievement. It seems such a waste having a player of Crossy’s caliber in grade cricket each week. His glove work also seems to go unnoticed which these days seems to be the sign of a good keeper. Took a couple of cracking catches throughout the year.

Ahillen Beadle Not really sure where to start about the quality of AB’s game this season. He started the year with one of the best hundreds I have seen and finished with 2 even better hundreds in our finals games. These innings were a level above and under immense pressure. I’ve played a lot of cricket and seen a lot of players over my time and there’s not many as good as this guy. It is important that AB just remains grounded and focused on improving his game. The rest will look after itself. Cameron Merchant Nappa played a couple of amazing innings this year. Although he wouldn’t be overly happy with how his season ended, he came a long way as a person and should be proud of the transformation he made. I really hope Nappa has a few years left in him as he’s been a fantastic player for the club. Always the first bloke to help the young players at training- well done mate. Stephen O’Keefe We didn’t see as much of Sok as usual this season which is a great thing for Sok. The leading wicket taker in the Sheffield shield and statistically the best spinner in the country. Not to forget the pressure runs he scored to win NSW a Sheffield Shield title. Well done on your achievements this year mate, hopefully bigger and better things to come. Justin Cox We didn’t expect to have Coxy at the start of this season, what a great decision to do pre-season out of his gym. He was probably surprised at starting in 1st grade but stepped straight up to the plate from game one. A very talented player who seems to play with ease when he gets in. I think Coxy would have loved being back around the club just as much as the club loved being back around Coxy. Nick McLachlan

If a players views their season as a tough one and takes 42 wickets at 19 then I’m looking forward to seeing Nick, in his terms, have a good season. When Nick learns to take some pressure off himself in all aspects of life then amazing things will start to happen for him. I think he will have learnt that this season. I admire his ambition, dedication and loyalty- three traits that go a long way in life. Nathan Buck What an addition Bucky was this season. To have an overseas player with so much enthusiasm and commitment to a club that 6 months ago he would have never heard of was a credit to Bucky as a person. A lot of people built great friendships with Bucky this year and I think it’s safe to say he will be a Manly boy for life. An incredibly talented bowler who I think will reach the top level. There will be a point where everything will click for Bucky and his rise to the top will be much quicker than anticipated. I’m looking forward to seeing this unfold as his great nature deserves that success. Dan Babula Another great find for the club. Since Shawn Bradstreet I’ve never seen someone so consistently give 100% to the team. Always wants the ball in his hand, always fights to stop every boundary or take every catch and always does his best to win the game for his team. What a great bloke to play cricket with. I hope the Manly cricket family plays a big part in Babsy’s life for years to come as he was a pleasure to have involved this season. Mickey Edwards I think we saw glimpses of how good we know Mickey can be this season. His spell in the Semi Final against Penrith was first class and got us back into the game. The off season will do Mickey a lot of good after completing back to back seasons and I think we will see big things next year.

Luke Diserens There is a lot to like about Dizzy. An attacking, talented bowler that has no fear. To be a good leg spinner you need to bowl with complete faith and belief that you are better than the batsmen. I think Dizzy has this. I hope we see Dizzy continue to want to succeed. He will learn more and more every season he play at this level and will only get better. His skill base and temperament is as good as I’ve seen for a leg spinner and as good as most spinners in first class cricketers. Michael Visser Viss is a great guy to have in your side. He probably didn’t quite get the opportunities he deserved this season but is a guy that always produces consistent performances. He showed that his game is good enough for 1st grade and provides great balance to any attack. I hope we see Viss continue to improve as it’s a credit to him the way he has worked his way up through the grades over the years. Taylor Beatty It was great to see Taylor have such a successful year with the bat after the disappointment of injury. If he can get himself fit for bowling and continue his batting surge then we have a serious all-rounder on

our hands. I love Taylor’s laid back attitude towards the game, I think this has a lot to do with the consistency of his batting. It’s now time to see Taylor combine this with his natural leadership skills as I think he will make a great 1st grade skipper one day. Mitchell Pugh It was a bit disappointing not to see Pughy kick on and score big runs in 1st grade. There is no doubt he is too good a player to be playing 2nd grade. Unfortunately with the strength of our batting side there were little opportunities for him to get extended opportunities but there is no doubt his time will come and he will dominate the top grade. I would like to thank all the boys for such an enjoyable year. I will take out a lot of great memories from the season and there is no doubt it is one of the best that I have been a part of. Its years like this that remind me why we play cricket and spend so much time together. Go Manly. Tim Cruickshank 1st grade captain 2013/14

Firstly, congratulations to Sydney University who won the 2nd Grade competition for the 3rd year in a row. Well another year of cricket has past and I would like to take a moment to take you over the year that was 2nd grade at Manly Warringah cricket this year. After a fantastic pre-season training regime and trial matches, 2nd grade started off its year with a win against UNSW at home at Manly Oval. Unfortunately for myself this would be the only game I would captain for another 8 weeks as I fractured my left wrist at work Taking over the captaincy would be Sam Webber. In Sam's first game as second grade captain he did a fantastic job leading the boys to another win against North Sydney at North Sydney number 2.This game also saw the inclusion of our overseas player in the form of Nathan Buck. Nathan didn't take long to show exactly how good a cricketer he was by taking 2/45 off 17 overs and bowling absolute thunderbolts to which the other team had no answer for, It wasn't hard to see that " Bucky " was way too good for second grade and he would play the remainder of the season in the top grade where he dominated and also snared a hat-trick. The next game would see us play Sutherland at the shire. A fantastic batting display from both Jarrod Walter (116) and Cameron Merchant (132 not out) would see us post a good total of 355 on a good

batting track. Our bowlers then backed it up with a great bowling display. Bowling out Sutherland for 262 with Michael Visser (4/86) and Luke Diserens (3/67) doing most of the damage. Unfortunately that would be our last win for 6 games until we came up against Blacktown at home at Manly Oval. A great bowling performance from all the bowlers saw Blacktown only be able to post 176.Our top order batsmen then did a great job chasing that total down in 41 overs, only losing 2 wickets. Mitchell Pugh (82 not out) and Aidan Baker (46) doing most of the damage. After notching up the win against Blacktown we knew that we still had a chance of making the preliminary finals if we only lost 1 of our remaining games. It wasn't to be. Only winning 1 out of 5. A disappointing end to what was a great start to the season. I would like to thank every player that was involved in playing 2nd grade this year. I know it wasn't the year we were all hoping for. But I'm sure if most of us are playing next year we can have a red hot crack at hopefully bringing the 2nd grade cup home to Manly for the first time in a long time. Players of 2nd grade for 2013/14 season: Sam Weber A very smart and composed wicket keeper with

fantastic hand eye coordination. I am pleased to say that Sam did a fantastic job having to step into the captaincy and kept very well up to the stumps this year. Aidan Baker One of the older more experienced players of the team this year. I have played a lot of cricket with Aidan and it is always a pleasure to have him in your side. He brings a lot of positive energy to the side and his batting was 1st grade standard this year. Jarrod Walter The real character of the side. I know personally that Jarrod put a lot of time into his batting this year at training and did a fantastic job opening the batting for the side. I believe he is not far away from the next step up. Mitchell Pugh Manly's new found all-rounder. This year not only did Pughy do a great job opening the batting scoring valuable runs at the top order, but he found a new craft in bowling, sometimes finding himself bowling 20 overs straight and then having to open the batting, taking some big scalps on the way. Bilal Qureshi The new kid on the block. Bilal's humor in the dressing room and his positive attitude towards the side found him becoming one of the boys right away. When he is "on" with the bat, he would have to be one of the best batsmen to watch. Jordan Daly Always keen to spin a yarn in the dressing room. Jordan showed this year that he is a more than capable of dominating second grade bowling

attacks. With a bit more experience I am sure that Jordan will become a consistent 1st grader. Taylor Beatty A fantastic all-rounder. Taylor had a fantastic year with the bat and ball, and found himself playing a lot of 1st grade as well as second grade. The great thing to see this year is how well his batting has come along, being picked as a batsman in the top grade. Michael Visser A great medium-fast bowler. Michael this year was the stand out of all the bowlers. It wouldn't matter what the situation was in the game or how long he had been bowling for, he always wanted the ball. A great young man with a big future ahead of him. Mickey Edwards Another character of the side. Mickey showed this year at times how good an opening bowler he is. With a few first grade games under his belt already, I don't believe it's long until you see Mickey with a permanent 1st grade position. Sam Alexander A bright spark with a bright future. I have personally witnessed Sam turn into the great left arm orthodox spin bowler he is today over the past few seasons. Sam is not far away from first grade and I think if he keeps training hard he will go further. Thank you to all the coaching staff and everyone else behind the scenes at Manly Warringah Cricket Club. We are lucky to play at the best club in Sydney and it's everyone that is involved in some capacity that makes this club what it is, so thankyou. Ryan Trevor Alan Bonnor 2nd Grade Captain 2013/14

Note: Above stats are regular season matches only

Firstly, congratulations to Northern Districts on being the 2013/14 3rd Grade Premiers. We had the team to win the competition this year but unfortunately it was not to be. We hit form at the right time, won games against good sides convincingly and believed that we could and would win from any position we found ourselves in. But 1 bad session against the eventual premiers cost us and our dream was over. I am proud to say that all who represented the 3rd XI this season were integral in the culture we created along the way. It is however so disappointing that we finished our season a couple of weeks earlier than we had all hoped. We enjoyed our cricket and trained well. (most of the time). There were some fantastic performances from everyone at some stage of the year and I believe players grew in confidence with each game. Our younger players became leaders and our older more experienced players enjoyed their cricket as they never have before. Some of our youngsters also stepped up when we needed them most, winning us games we probably shouldn't have won. The future of our club is in great hands. If our club can enjoy the cricket they play week I week out as we did this year then plenty of trophies are just around the corner. I would, on behalf of all of 3rd grade like to

thank our fantastic club coaches. Shawn Bradstreet in particular has played a huge role in my career and I am fortunate to call him my mate. His hard work and passion for our club is unrivalled and we are lucky to have him. Thanks Shawn for all your help and support over the years. Both to me as a captain and as a coach, I have learnt so much from you and I will always be grateful. To Phil Marks, Adam Crosthwaite, Gavin Fletcher, Bob Rollins and David Gardiner. Thankyou for being a part of the best coaching roster at the best club in the best competition. Your efforts are the reason we as a club had the successful season we did. A big thankyou also to Chairman of Selectors Chris Hynes. It’s probably the toughest job in grade cricket but Hynsie put his heart and soul into it all season, and his passion and ambition for our club to be the best it can be is just about the best quality you can have in the role, so thankyou. To our manager Alan Wright. Unwavering in his dedication to his teammates, club mates and the whole Manly Cricket community. Does anything that is asked of him and we all love him. A great man to have around. Mate I will miss Saturdays and working alongside you. The last 4 years have been great and so many memories formed. Thankyou for all of your love, help and support. I couldn't have continued as skipper for so long

without you. To the players, starting with the 11 from the QF. Then all who have played 5 games or more. Adam Gummer Gums really stepped up this season as a leader. We all know he can bat but his numbers this year suggest he has really grown as a player as well. His 2 hundreds were brilliant and his ability to read the game in the field is exceptional. Certainly a future captain, of which grade only Gums can decide. Thanks mate for all the good cricketing times we had, a premiership and plenty of laughs. Jarrod Rawlings Ralphy can bat, no one doubts that. A year that promised so much after being picked in 2's and scoring a few runs turned into a season of what could have been. The only thing holding him back is consistency. If Jarrod can score big scores regularly (specifically 100's) then the sky is the limit. An old school opener, the likes of which are so valuable these days. One of the best sets of hands in the grippers that I have played with. Cheers Ralph! Ryan Farrell This young bloke is the perfect number 3. Technically sound, relaxed and becoming increasingly confident in his own game and ability. Add to this his more than handy leggies and his freakish ability in any position in the field and Ryan is the complete all-rounder. Started the season really well but didn't finish the way I know he would have liked, but not through lack of trying. It’s been a pleasure Ryan watching you mature into the fine young man you have become.

Lance Stewart Digits has been around a while now and this year I think he realised that he has become a senior member of the club. He showed this with some well chosen words when we needed them the most and also with the bat and in the field at gully where he took some screamers. His batting went to a new level and with this season behind him he should be pushing for a start in twos next year. Just a great teammate to have around and I for one have certainly enjoyed watching his progress. Sam Gainsford A real all round talent who has had a tough year off the field. But you would never have known as his desire and attitude towards this team succeeding was never questioned. At times this season he showed what he is capable of, when we needed him the most he stood tall and delivered. Sam, I've enjoyed watching you grow from a boy to a man and I look forward to watching you progress in the near future. Luke Grant An all-rounder of true class. A match winner with bat and ball and an attitude that matches his work ethic and competitiveness. The perfect man to have coming in at 7 or 8 and with the ball at times he was unplayable. Luke you trained so hard all year and got the results to show for it. If you continue to do so they will continue and your future will take you wherever you desire. Well done mate on a fantastic season. Matt Alexander Mattoes joined us late in the year but proved a real asset straight away. His extra pace and ability to swing the ball certainly intimidated a few opposition batsmen. His batting is an unknown quantity as he has not yet put the

Page 49: Manly Warringah District Cricket Club 2013/14

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2013/14 Annual Report

scores on the board that we know he is capable of. Mattoes, back yourself mate. Get your body right and train hard and anything is possible. I can’t wait to see what happens! James Boyer Jimmy was outstanding this year. His glove work at times was way above third grade standard. Jimmy is a keeper who really leads his team around the field which is so important. A hard worker at training that deserves every bit of success that comes his way. I hope in the years to come Jimmy can move up the grades and play where his standards will be more than at home. Also one of the nicest young kids I have ever met. Love ya Jimbo. Ronnie Davis One of the greats that we are all lucky to have played with. Ronnie's passion for the game and for our club is amazing and he certainly gets a massive case of white line fever when he takes the field. His stats this year were great but if his body could have behaved all season then they would have been incredible. A leader and a great teammate. Thanks Ronnie, it’s been a pleasure. Sam Alexander What I like most about Sammy is that he is the life of the party and always cracking a joke. But when asked upon to switch on and deliver he always does. Had a few very successful games in 2s and I believe this is his grade at the moment. Sammy, you work so hard on your bowling and it shows. But don't neglect the 2 other aspects of your game that are so important as you climb the ladder. Loved every minute of playing cricket with you mate. Good luck. Arshdeep Virdi This bloke is about as naturally gifted a cricketer as you will ever see. Perfect no 7 or 8 that can win a game or take the game away from the opposition in a matter of overs. New ball, old ball, whatever. He is a wicket taker. In the field he is exceptional. If Ash can train more regularly and get the results that he desires on a regular basis then look out to all in the grades above. Well done on another fantastic season mate. I’ll be watching you climb up the grades with interest!

Max Burgess Not the year I'm sure Maxy would have been after. But his desire and dedication to his team, himself and his club remained of the highest level. Mate it’s just a matter of believing in yourself, your game and knowing that you have done the hard yards through the week. It will come, I promise you that. I have loved taking the field with you mate. Your energy and passion is infectious to all those around you. Nick McCallum-Toomey What a start to the season for Nick. Took wickets for fun in 4's and then 6 on debut in 3's in round 3. Good pace and swing. Keep bowling it mate, hit the length you want to. You have a big future, as someone who can swing the ball as much as you do is always highly sort after. A genuine kid with a great work ethic and an enormous talent. I would also like to thank ALL the other players that played 3's this season. There are too many to name and if I try I might forget someone. You have all contributed along the way to our great season and it has been a pleasure to play with you all. To Andrew Fraser, David Gainsford, Joel Mason and all the other committee members thankyou again for all your hard work. It really is no surprise to me that we are the best club in the competition and it is thanks to you guys that this is the case. We are an incredibly lucky playing group to have such a passionate committee. Thankyou to all the wives, girlfriends, mums, dads, brothers, sisters and friends of us all. Thankyou for supporting us and for all your help this season. Over the last 6 seasons I have had the honour of leading this 3rd grade side. We have had some great times and some not so great times, but that is sport and cricket. It makes us better players and people to experience both the ups and downs. It is why we play. To all the players who I have taken to the field with in my 16 years at this club I love, thankyou. I have made some very special friendships along the way and had some incredible personal and team moments that will remain with me for the rest of my life. I only ever wanted to play for 1 club and to do so

successfully and for so long I am incredibly honoured. This club will always be in my blood and I will miss playing for Manly, but I will always be involved in some way, just not sure how yet. Time will tell. To my family, thankyou for all your support and more importantly giving me the opportunity so many years ago to play this great game. Who knows where I would be today without your selflessness and will to see your son succeed and have fun.

Last but certainly not least to my wife Gemma and my daughter Keira. I love you both and I'm looking forward to life after cricket. Thankyou for your support. Our next chapter awaits. Cheers everyone, Craig Little 3rd Grade Captain 2013/14

Firstly, Congratulations to Easts for winning the 2013/14 premiership. 4th grade can consider ourselves very unlucky not to have won the competition and breaking the 42 year drought this season. We were in a dominant position in the grand final having declared at 8/331 and having Easts 2 down on a wicket with plenty in it only for the rain to come in on the 2nd day preventing any chance of pushing on for a well-deserved victory. Well done to Easts for winning the comp on the back of their minor premiership, you certainly cannot begrudge a team who has done that. Our season was very consistent; all along I knew we had a team that should win the comp. We seemed to get better as the year went on and I can only think of two games just after Christmas where we played poorly (Gordon and Syd Uni). We finished in 3rd position, just 3 points away from Easts and when we look back on the season one could argue we had our chances to comfortably wrap up the minor premiership. For instance the following games we should have scored points from…

Collapse Rd 1 v UNSW

Mosman not preparing a wicket day 2 and being washed out at 8.30 am on a dry day and wicket - bizarre, and frustrating, when we had 250 on the board

Not finishing off Campbelltown and then not taking the easy run out chance when it presented it itself when they were 9 down, 2 balls to go.

Sloppy catching for a half hour period against Sydney preventing us from a comfortable outright.

Fairfield not attempting to chase runs in the 120 over game despite us declaring at 57 overs.

Despite these blips we obviously did well to finish in 3rd spot. What was this great result based on? We seemed to have plenty of different people get involved and take control of games at different times. We did not rely totally on any single batsman or bowler and we had plenty of depth in our batting for the times the top order did not fire. Our bowling attack had good variety and was a big handful at 4th grade level for most teams. I will go through all players below but I would like to mention a few blokes before this. Rowan Hamman - first game back in about 7 years and scores a 100. Looked like scoring hundreds every time he batted (ended up with 4 of them) and would have had a massive year if he played more games. Broke Couchy's record for aggregate and just missed Patto's avg. Josh Petersen - he and Rowan are great mates and turned up together and both broke records, Josh beating a long standing keeping record for 4th grade. Sam Hole - should be looking to play higher grades and eventually leading that team Nick Toomey - when he bowls with rhythm he is a threat at all levels as he bowls with lively pace and takes it away In approximate batting order our squad was:- Rowan Hamman If he plays a full season and trains he can pick his grade. Showed everyone that opening the batting does not mean you can't be aggressive. He took on the bowlers as soon as he could and rarely missed

out. Played all the shots and as soon as he banged one straight down the ground you knew he was ready to go. His composed, self-assured manner was hopefully observed by the youngsters. A good slipper as well (usually at least) and provided great advice. Max Burgess Came down to 4s after struggling a bit in 2s and 3s and immediately broke his finger. Took some time getting things right in 4th grade but came good in the semi-final with a great 54no. Max will take a positive or two from this season and expect bigger things from him next year. His enthusiasm was consistently high regardless of his personal performance. A great team player and leader. Ross Trewartha Ross did not hit his straps this year and despite getting numerous starts did not go on with it. He proved to be toying with us though because he played one of the best innings you would want to see in the GF, taking Easts apart for a masterly 143. His fielding was incredible - a true athlete and took the catch of the year at a crucial time in the gully v Sutherland in the semi-final. Play again mate! Sam Hole Sam played the whole season in 4th grade compiling four half centuries and numerous 20's and 30's. I'm sure once he kicks on and gets a century plenty will flow. An on field leader always showing encouragement and bowls some very useful orthodox spin. Should be looking to get through a grade a year for the next 3 seasons. Bill D’Arcy Played about half the season in 4ths enjoying a consistent patch mid-year but fell away and ended up in 5ths. His correct technique should be his strength over the coming years and we will see him

move ahead. Matt Cole This likeable bloke started in 3s but came back to 4ths early on. He has a knack of getting out to a loose shot just when you think he is set. If he can get over this he will be an excellent run scorer and could move through the grades. Needs to work on his fielding though but has the right attitude and this should not be difficult. Jacob Graham Jacob started the year in a promising way, scoring 45 but never got going again to the standard he is capable of. Can definitely be a threat at the 3rd/4th grade level with bat and ball. Batting anywhere between 1 and 10 probably did not help but needs to achieve more consistency. He got us out of trouble in some games and we look forward to bigger contributions from this bustling all-rounder. Danny Reynolds We lost Danny to injury just after Christmas which was a big loss. Never fully fit Danny was still a menace with bat and ball. Called up at the last minute before Rd2 he proceeded to take wickets and belt a match winning 50. He has a great eye and is a weapon with the bat at 7 or 8 and when fit a dynamic bowler. Hopefully gets over injuries and is up for it next season. Josh Petersen A marvel behind the stumps, with bat in hand and in the rooms with his excellent words and great demeanour. Got important runs all year and usually got out having a go and I can hardly recall an error behind the stumps but I do recall some superb athleticism. A great bloke who will hopefully bring his family along to watch him in action next year.

Dylan Marshall Running with Dylan at preseason fitness I would not have thought for a second he would visit 4th grade this year. Injury though spoilt his year and he ended up playing the last handful of games in 4ths. Always going to struggle to find the form he is capable of but when he did get it going he was clearly a cut above 4th grade. When fit he will be up the grades immediately and good luck to him, a fun bloke to have around and a great competitor. Brad Wilson Central to 4ths success this year, always up for a laugh and took plenty of key wickets throughout the season especially after Christmas where a reminder of the importance of positive body language seemed to work wonders. Took consistent new ball wickets and bowled us to victory in semi v Sutherland with a superb 6 wickets. Brad's batting is also improving to the point of classifying him as an all-rounder. If he gets more confident against spin bowling he will round out his game nicely. Nick McCallum-Toomey Took 10 wickets in Rd 2 v Norths and this kick started his year where he went on to lead our aggregate. He also took wickets in 3rd grade. Bowls at a fresh pace and when on song bowls a great away swinger that will trouble all batsmen, regardless of the grade. Can handle the bat as well and the game or innings was never over when Nick came to the crease. Tom Kaye A player who had limited opportunity this year due to injury, but played most of his games in 4s. A classy

left hand bat who is too good for 4th grade. An injury free year next season will see him prosper. Other players who had a game or two included:- Corrie Boss coming back from injury and showed what he can do with bat and ball; Arshdeep Virdi missed out on Grand Final spot by a whisker due to qualification rules; Joel Mason showed he can still play 4th grade easily; Zac Trewartha had a difficult introduction playing in our worst game of the year and getting stuck with old ball into a gale on a belter; Ben Kittlety bowled with good pace and hopefully comes back; Matt Alexander came back from injury and was a handful with bat and ball; Aidan baker played some great innings; Nick Williams, Angus Reid, Tom Kelly, Toby Poole, Pete Lindsay, Simon Lyon and Liam Tully all had a game or two as well and contributed. Thanks goes to the coaching staff Shawn Bradstreet, Phil Marks, Adam Crosthwaite and Gavin Fletcher. You all did a great job and I look forward to working with you again next year. You ensured all aspects of preparation and game day were covered and were always available. Bob Rollins as well, mate you did a great job and I loved seeing you around on match day and having a hit on Tuesdays. The amount of balls you threw and the number of times you had to deal with the ball machines was ridiculous and it takes a top bloke to do all that.

Dave Gardner came on Rd 12 for 4th grade and we did not lose again. Awesome job for us mate, whoever gets you next year has a great head start; Chris Hynes - tough job as head selector but did it well and his thoughts and advice were great. Hope he backs up next year. Alan Wright ran the nets with aplomb and is a foundation of the club. Steve Beatty & Frase - ensured the club's administration dealt with the issues as they cropped up and this makes things a lot easier. Gordon Currie - champion club man who devoted a further 6 days to MWDCC cause by scoring for us throughout the finals series - many thanks.

Just a quick one to acknowledge Craig Little's efforts over the years. Going out on a high, forever selfless, Genie is going to be missed a lot. Congratulations on a great career at MWDCC. Well done on a great season 4th grade, bad luck we couldn't get our just rewards. I have the feeling if we sent them in on day 1 the result would have been different. I am sure a lot of the players became aware for the first time that winning is a key ingredient to enjoying yourself. There is no reason why this can't continue next year especially with the attitude of our coaches and administration. See you next year Warren Evans 4th Grade Captain 2013/14

Firstly Congratulations to Penrith on winning the 2013/14 Sherwood Cup. 5th Grade enjoyed a very successful season, making the Grand Final. Adding to the occasion was that Manly Oval was the venue for the match, making it even more special. 26 players pulled on the famous Waratah cap this year. Some in their first year, some having played a little over the preceding years and others who had seen many seasons and should have known better. The season was a success, particularly for the development of future Manly players. New players like Ben Kittlety, Hamish Ferguson, Jake Carden, Tom Nickol and the 2 young wicket keepers, Aiden Bariol & Sam Kelly will be around the club for many years. The Pathway Program continues to throw up talented Manly juniors who have the right attitude and are ready to take the next step up to grade cricket. From the first round, the side was never out of the top 6. There were many batting highlights, as all the top order took advantage of flat wickets and fast outfields. Batting became the strength of the squad and we set ourselves training and match goals to score as many runs as possible. After Xmas, as the ball began to swing around, totals were not as big, but the bowlers began to shine. Hard work at training to improve fielding skills was relished as the final series loomed large on the radar.

After finishing 3rd, a hard fought 14 run win over Gordon in the Qualifying Final, followed by a more dominant 54 run victory over Randy Petes, took the boys to the Grand Final against Penrith, who had deservedly made the decider, after leading the competition for a large part of the season. The game itself was lost in the first hour, as we slumped to 6 for 17. The title was gone, but our pride was still intact. Most of the second day was lost to rain to deny us any chance of a comeback. Disappointing, but celebrations on Sunday night and Monday, proved the 5th Grade finalists were not going to stew on the result. John Warne, Joel Mason, Ross Trewartha & Greg Boyer all captained the side this year while I was either injured or unavailable and shows what a tremendous talent pool of former players that the club can call on. Many thanks must also go to Don “Dollars” Sellin for his continued support of 5th Grade, scoring once again for the club he loves so much. Ian Ferguson and Alan Wright also made enormous contributions during the finals series as team managers. Thanks also to all the parents, whether through the best tea’s in 5th Grade, or helping out around Mike Pawley Oval on game days. Coaches – speaking on behalf of all the 5th grade squad, you guys have been an inspiration. Winga, Skid, Bobby, Lozza, and Fletch, you put in so much time & effort to get the boys to the last game of the year. Every player in the squad are now better

players because of your dedication and enthusiasm. Chris Hynes also deserves a massive thank you. Hynesie made a huge difference this year, his first year as Chairman of Selectors. I hate to think of the amount of mobile time we spent together during the season, but we both took selection of the team very seriously. Thanks Hynesie. Now to the players: Joel Mason Great to have Maso around this year. Fantastic support to me personally and to the rest of the team. Maso would probably be the first to admit that he didn’t score as many runs as he should have. With so many commitments off the field, hitting cricket balls was often hard to fit in. Always first to encourage teammates on and off the field, Maso was a vital part of the sides success. Billy D’Arcy Billy played half the season in 5’s, the rest with Wazza in 4’s. A sound top order technique with the ability to play a long innings, Billy’s batting is certainly improving each season, as supported by receiving the batting average award. Great pair of hands, but still some work to do on fielding to go to the next level. If there was a banter award for 5th grade, Billy would win, with daylight second. Had teammates, opposition and umpires in stiches on the field with good humoured comments. Could easily move up the grades quickly. Hamish Ferguson Debut year for Hamo. Quite hard to judge how well Hamish went this year. Obviously a talented batsman of the future, I think that this year will do him the world of good going forward. Probably too caught up with others opinions on batting technique, rather than finding his own style and being happy with it. Very useful bowler who should always be encouraged (coaches) to keep bowling.

Outstanding fielder with a great arm. Watch him go in the years ahead. Toby Poole Toby went to the next level this year, scoring the most runs by quite a distance. Rarely troubled by any bowling attack, the only thing missing was a three figure score, which he went close to on a number of occasions. Really enjoyed his cricket, trained hard and was always ready to do the 1 percenters. Will surely move up the grades next year. Continue to work hard Tobs and I’m sure that more success will follow. Jake Carden Another new player to grade, who really made his mark. Averaging 23 with the bat and 11 with ball, shows that Jake has true all-round talents. Coming off a brilliant Green Shield campaign really gave Jake the confidence to finish off the season. I think that he should work hard on being a slip/gully fielder, as he showed this year that is probably his best fielding position. The next step is to turn all of the 30’s into 80 plus scores and I’m sure that this will come. Gradually becoming more comfortable within the team, Ping is one for the future. Tom Kelly TK started the season on fire, scoring runs for fun. Tom brought a level of experience to what was a very young squad and spoke up when opinions were asked for. That early season confidence set up Tom for a huge year. Tom also snared vital wickets with his medium pace out swingers, consistently bowling the right shape and breaking a partnership. Great team man and another one who really enjoyed his cricket. Tom’s batting fell away a bit after Xmas which is one area to work on next season, being more consistent, but this is only a minor comment on what was a great year for TK. Will Outred Breakthrough year for Will. Leading wicket taker with 32 wickets at 21. Will trained really hard,

Page 62: Manly Warringah District Cricket Club 2013/14

62 | P a g e

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2013/14 Annual Report

bowling countless overs at training, which turned into more accuracy and control on the field. The go to bowler for me all year. Also involved in 4 runouts, underlying his excellent work in the field. I think that a lot of people at the club believe that Will can become a genuine all-rounder in the future. I agree, but it will take a lot of work and discipline. At times, Will looks as good as our top order, only to play a silly shot. Work hard Will, a leg spinning all-rounder is one of the hardest goals in cricket, but if anyone can do it, it’s you. The talent is there, how much do you want it and are you prepared to do what it takes to get there. Zac Trewartha Steady year for Zac, without reaching the heights perhaps expected of him. Probably didn’t take as many top order wickets with the new ball as he could have, but was deadly at the death in 1 dayers and mopping up tails in the 2 dayers. A few small adjustments from Winga and Fletch will pay off next year. Really came on during the season as a batsman. Hits as clean a ball as anyone in the team and scored some priceless runs at No.8. As with all who aspire to both bat and bowl, hard work honing technique at training will see Zac score a bucket of runs for Manly. Outstanding in the field, Zac has the potential to play higher grades at a young age. Ben Falconer Falcs season culminated with his best spell in the Grand Final. 6 for 36 was reward for training hard and never giving up. Left out of the Qualifying Final he certainly repaid the selectors faith. A consistent wicket taker, Ben plays to his potential. Perhaps an extra yard of pace and more lower order runs would cement his place in grade cricket for years to come. Ben Kittlety 13 wickets at 26 doesn’t really show what Ben offered the team this year. Arriving from Melbourne via NZ, “Bin” has real pace, sometimes a bit wayward, but always bowls to take wickets, an attitude every captain loves. Injury unfortunately cut Ben’s season short just before the finals, denying him the chance to exploit some bowler friendly wickets and conditions. I’m sure that with continued guidance from the coaching staff, Ben will cut his way through many opposition top orders as he works his way up the grades. Sam Kelly

What a great young bloke. Can keep wickets as well. Another Manly junior to come to 5th grade from the Pathway Program. Brought into the squad as a standby for Butch Boyer, Sam excelled in the 4 games he played. Injected a huge amount of enthusiasm to the group, always giving everything he had at training and in matches. Yet to be dismissed in grade cricket, work hard at your batting Sam, so much a part of wicket keeping now. Great start to your Manly career. Greg Boyer Butch again showed what passion for the club means. Helping out the team in the first few rounds, I coaxed him into playing the back end of the season and Finals series. A few injuries robbed him of that chance. With all that he does for cricket in the area, it was a bonus for the entire club that Butch was able to take the field and show he has still got it with both the bat and behind the stumps. Thanks mate. Nick Williams Nick played the majority of the season behind the stumps and did a good job. Coming to a new club is never easy. At Manly, buying into the culture that coaches and senior players set up, is a given. While Nick definitely tried to improve his cricket, getting stuck into training with the club keepers, not following team and club rules forced the selectors to let Nick go towards the end of the season. Not an easy decision to make, but one the captain, coaches and selectors had to take. Good luck Nick in your cricket endeavors in the future. Many thanks to the following players who all played 5th grade at various staged throughout the season. John Warne, Justin Knight, Jacob Graham, Aidan Baker, James Trickey, Dave Gainsford, Hayden Paterick, Liam Tully, Jack Murphy, Tom Kaye, Pete Lindsay, Aiden Bariol, Ross Trewartha, Tom Nickoll. Thanks to all, especially John Warn who showed so much club spirit to play again at short notice. To the committee, I’ve really noticed the club kicking many goals this season. Frase and his team are a really committed and talented bunch that all the players should be very proud of. Finally, in summary, to all of my teammates in 5th Grade. Boys, thanks for the commitment, thanks for the discipline, but most importantly, thanks for the fun. Cricket is a game to be enjoyed and we certainly had fun out there. Sure we fell 1 game short, but

remember that we 1 of only 10 teams playing on the last weekend of the season. To all of you, I wish you continued success and to all the new guys, I hope that the experience you had this year leads to long careers with the Mighty Waratahs.

Congratulations to Bankstown on winning the 2013/2014 Poidevin Gray shield. The 2013/14 season was a tough and frustrating one for the PGs side. We played some really good cricket, highlighted by our brilliant win over heavy weights St George, however we weren't consistent enough and in the end finished 15th with 2 wins and 4 losses (with one wash out). Our batting was our main downfall this season, only reaching 200 runs on one occasion which we won. However the boys fought hard with the ball and in the field and really showed great character throughout the season to make each game a contest. I would like to thank the scorers Geoff Rodgers and Gordon Currie for giving up their time on a Sunday, all the boys really appreciate it. I would also like to thank Alan Wright and David Gardener for everything they did on game day to make it easier on us players. And thank you to all the parents and supporters that came and cheered us on throughout the season. Finally I would like to thank Shawn Bradstreet, Phil Marks and all the coaching staff for their help and support this season. Jack Richie Jack was newly appointed coach of the PGs side for the 2013/14 season much to the delight of myself and the other players. Jack did a fantastic job this season as coach and made my job a lot easier. All the players thrived on the advice Jack gave, with him not long out of the PGs fold himself and due to this the boys could easily relate with him. Thanks for everything you did this season Jack, myself and all the players really appreciated it. Taylor Beatty Taylor is an extremely talented all-rounder, unfortunately though he was not able to bowl for most of the season which was a big blow to the side. However he more than made up for it with the bat,

having the best average in the team. He played some brilliant innings throughout the season when the side needed it, none better than his 100 against St George when the side was in a tough spot. Taylor also showed great leadership around the side and helped me a lot. Well done this season Taylor. Jarrod Rawlings Jarrod was a big part of the PGs side this season and was a great team man. He started the season off with a bang making 87 in the first game (which included his first ever bomb) however struggled a bit after that. It was great having you in the team this year Jarrod, and I hope you learnt a lot from your first year in PGs and I'm sure next year you will score plenty of runs. Sam Webber Sam was our keeper this year and did a great job behind the stumps. He also opened the batting in most games which is a tough gig after keeping for 50 overs. Sam's leadership around the side was brilliant and he really helped me out a lot out on the field when I wasn't sure what to do. Thanks for your help this season Sam, it was a pleasure having you in the team. Sam Gainsford Sammy is a great all-round player and did a fantastic job for the team this season. He had a tough role with the bat, coming in with a few overs to spare and having to score quickly for the get go. However in the last game he had an opportunity to build an innings and capitalised making a brilliant 61 when the team desperately needed it. Sam also did a terrific job with the ball bowling his left arm orthodox, picking up some crucial wickets and keeping it tight. Well done this season Sam, in seasons to come you are going to be a dominant PGs player. Matthew Alexander Matt missed the first two games of the season due to injury and returned for the final four and made a

big impact. Matt is a great bloke to have in any team and he brought a lot humour to the side. He also gave us an X factor, being able to hit the ball out of the ground and be intimidating with the ball, both of which we needed. Well done this season Matt, it was great having you in the team and congrats on a great PGs career. Jordan Daly It was a tough season for Jordan, with him not really getting going with the bat. However he brought a lot of energy I the field and was a great team man. Hopefully you learnt a lot this season Jordan and will come back bigger and better next season. Luke Grant Luke had another terrific PGs season being our top wicket taker with 13 wickets. He was my go to man with the ball and always did a brilliant job. His outstanding figures of 5-23 in a 12 over game showed his class. Well done this season Luke, you did an outstanding job and congrats on a great PGs career. Ryan Farrell Ryan was another on who had a tough PGs season with the bat, and it didn't help that he generally had to come in late in the innings and score quickly from the outset. It was great to have Ryan in the team this year and he fitted into the team really well. Hopefully you learnt something this season and can use it to become a better player and dominate the PGs format in years to come. Arshdeep Virdi Arshdeep only played 3 games this season for the PGs side because of injury which was extremely unfortunate. He is a great all-round player and made some vital contributions in the games that he did

play. Hope your injuries get better Arshdeep and you can come back and be a dominate player next season in PGs. Sam Alexander Sam did really well this season with the ball bowling his left arm orthodox. His role was to bowl aggressively and look to take wickets all the time, which he did on several occasions. Sam is also a great team man and the kind of person every team needs in it. Sam you are a fantastic spinner and if you believe in yourself a bit more you will take loads of wickets in years to come. Mickey Edwards Mickey was really unlucky this season with the ball and on several occasions was too good for the batsmen. I've never seen so many edges that didn't carry to the slips, especially at his height and pace, if luck was on his side he would of take loads of wickets. He was the leader of our attack and bowled quick and aggressively enabling the bowler at the other end to pick up wickets. Well done this season Mickey, you brought a lot of humour to the side and were an absolute pleasure to be around. Matt Cole and Brad Wilson where also a part of the PGs team this year playing 2 and 1 games respectively. They did well in the games they played with limited opportunity. I would like to thank Zach Trewartha and Angus Reid for doing the 12th man duties this season. Overall it was an extremely enjoyable season, not quite the result we wanted but it was a pleasure to play and captain such a great bunch of blokes. Mitchell Pugh Poidevin-Gray Captain 2013/14

This season was a season for development with four players from the u14s and five from the u15s giving us the youngest team in Green shield history. The boys came together extremely well which shows another benefit of the pathway, as most of them had played together at both junior reps and Warringah Shires. Jake Carden Jake had an outstanding season finishing as our leading run scorer with four scores over 50. He was also Captain and showed the maturity needed to lead such a young team. While he received many accolades for his batting, his bowling was also of the highest standard and was too good a lot of the times. He was awarded selection in the Green shield combined team where he was man of the match vs NSW country, this ultimately rewarded him with selection in the NSW U17s squad. Great season all round Jake!! Joe Graham Joe was our only player who had played Green shield prior and was also joint Captain. He showed glimpses of his talents throughout the season and will hopefully go on to bigger and better things. Joe would always put his team first and was always in the middle of the social side to our team. He was always polite and a delight to coach. Abhijeet Virdi Abhijeet came off a successful Watson shield campaign and with luck could have picked up more wickets in Green shield. He has a quiet nature and respectful demeanor which make him easy to coach. His fielding is of the highest standard and when given the opportunity can hit a ball as clean as any other. Well done on winning a Premiership for Warringah Tim Creer as well. Aiden Bariol Aiden was one of the “young guns” to come from the successful U’14 DCA team. The step-up to play the premier U’16 competition against faster bowlers

gave Aiden a great experience that will serve him well for years to come. Aiden showed great potential with his batting (especially in his debut against Easts) and his keeping was solid. By combining his great hand/eye coordination and natural calmness under pressure with hard work at training, Aiden will be able to go very far in cricket. Alex Bain Alex was our leading bowler with 11 wickets in only 6 games and picked up a 5 wicket haul against Randwick-Petersham in Round 4. As the competition progressed Alex’s confidence grew and he got better and better. Not only can Alex be Manly’s next Stuart Clark with his tall release and nagging length, his ability with the bat is also impressive with lusty hitting mixed with classic shots. A talent to keep an eye on for the future. Glynn Archer Glynn came into the side to replace Will Denny (injured) after Glynn himself had been out prior due to injury. Glynn became our main strike bowler who showed great pace and accuracy, he also was on many occasions too good for the batsman. If Glynn can stay injury free he has a good future ahead. Isaiah Vumbaca Isaiah “Chook” Vumbaca is certainly example where “you can’t read a book by its cover”. His slightness in stature disguises his steely determination to perform well, an amazing ability to bowl accurate and fizzing wrist spin, fantastic fielding skills whilst also showing a real class with his batting style. Considering Isaiah came from the U’14 level this season, he has shown that he is real talent that will continue to flourish as he gains more & more experience playing against men. Once he can fully back himself with self-belief and realises that being hit around as a leg spinner is part of the trade, his cricket path is unlimited. His batting effort against Wests in the last round is testament to that.

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2013/14 Annual Report

Jack Edwards Jack “Slug” Edwards is another of the U’14 young guns that debuted in Green Shield this year. Demonstrating the on-field calmness of his older brother, Jack demonstrated a level of maturity and talent that blended perfectly with his natural leadership abilities. Whilst his batting did not hit the levels he would have liked in the scorebook, but he showed out in the middle the skills and talent of a future batting star.

Jack Pickering Jack started the season well with a match winning 50 against Easts and finished well with a match winning 80 against Wests which shows you that when Jack bats well the team wins. Jack has undoubted talent and when he gets starts can dominate any attack, started his off spinners which I believe will make him a complete all-rounder. Jack has great leadership qualities which augers well for the future.

Joel Wood Joel came into the Green Shield off the back of some very good performances in Shires & DCA. Another player that will be around for next season, Joel had new experiences in the competition by opening the batting. A pure all-rounder who has can take the game away from opposition. All he needs to do is be more confident of his abilities. His knock against Sutherland where he nearly won the impossible for Manly is a good example of this. Deservedly selected in next season’s Emerging Blues squad, we look forward to great things from Joel.

Lachlan Kerr Every squad needs a bit of a larrikin to keep the humour going, and Lach filled that role well. With the depth of the squad’s bowling talent, Lach had to fight hard to get bowling opportunities but when he did, he made the most of them. His 5/26 effort in the last round against Wests was a great reward for his toils. With dedication to training hard and absorbing advice from the seasoned fast bowling

veterans around both Warringah and Manly, Lachlan’s game will continue to embellish.

Ned Healey Ned “Mullet” Healey was our fast bowler with the quiet demeanor, but with the inner mongrel like Dennis Lillee. On his day, his rhythm produces a very fast ball that would pose problems for all batsmen…..just ask the Easts batsmen that he tormented. Ned’s athletic ability also extends to both his batting and fielding, where he will win games on these attributes alone in the future. A bright star that is we are keen to keep watching.

Ned Hole Ned “Noodle” Hole showed during the campaign an ability that belies his young age (another U’14 young gun). He was thrust into a pressure situation in game 1 against Easts and demonstrated a maturity and calmness that will be the foundation of his success in years to come. Notwithstanding he is a fielder of great ability and has a handy bowling style, Ned’s batting technique will result in long innings and big scores as he learns his game further. Another star of the future.

Nick Hidas Nick has always had raw talent throughout the junior age groups. He showed these talents in our game against Sutherland where he displayed his power and timing in his innings of 60. Nick missed a few games due to being away but it was great to see him develop over the season and we hope he continues to develop as he has the X factor.

Will Denny Team spirit and culture is not built on cricket results alone….it is built on players like Will who, no matter the unfortunate situation, are still will to support and do anything for the team. Unfortunately injured just prior to the start of the campaign, Will was still an integral part of the team and attended every match to cheer on with passion. An undoubted

Page 73: Manly Warringah District Cricket Club 2013/14

Manly Warringah District Cricket Club – 2013/14 Annual Report

talent that was duly awarded by Warringah for his bowling efforts in TCC this season. Well done Will!

No Green Shield campaign can be enjoyable without the dedicated team off the park. To this we say a huge thank you to our Manager Alan Wright who provided laughter, logistics and lollies for our fantastic squad, as well as our legendary Scorer Don “Dollars” Sellin who was always there when needed and provided much sage advice.

Last and by no means least, we would like to thank all the parents, family, friends and club members who gave unrelenting support to the lads and

management throughout the season. A special mention to Vicki Carden and Sharon Bain for their extraordinary logistical efforts during the season. Although we may not have won all the time on the park, we always won with our fantastic teas and have now made new friends for life.

We wish you all the best for next season and look forward to seeing the boys enjoy their cricket into the future.
