I am thrilled to be returning as the Director of the MCNHR after a 12 month administrative and research leave where I spent six months of working with researchers at the University of Manchester. I would like to extend a big thank-you to Dr. Lesley Degner for her leadership for the MCNHR over the past year. As you will see in the following pages, the MCNHR has been a very busy place. In May, the MCNHR hosted Dr. Nancy Edwards as the 2012 Researcher in Residence. This past summer marks our third year of running our Summer Internship Program and it has once again been a huge success for both students and faculty mentors. As you read this newsletter, you can not help but see that there have been many reasons to celebrate in the outstanding accomplishments of members of the MCNHR. In addition to serving as the Director of the MCNHR and Associate Dean of Research, I am also serving as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Nursing until the arrival of our new Dean, Dr. Beverley O’Connell in October. Dr. O’Connell is joining from the Faculty of Health at Deakin University in Australia where she held the position of Associate Dean (Research) and the Inaugural Chair in Nursing at Deakin – Southern Health Nursing Research Centre. Dr. O’ Connell has more than 18 years experience teaching and researching in the areas of falls prevention, stroke care, delirium, dementia, aged care, continence care, risk management and carer needs. I hope that when Dr. O’Connell arrives you will join me in giving her a warm Winnipeg welcome. research.

The Research in Residence Program

grew out of the dinner in 2004 to hon-

or Dr. Helen Preston Glass who had

requested that the money raised be

used to establish a Researcher in

Residence program. Special thanks to

Dr. Glass for creating the vision and

legacy for a Researcher in Residence

Program to promote excellence in

nursing research in Manitoba. The

2012 event attracted and united nurses

from across the province and research

colleagues from many different

disciplines. Dr. Glass was unable to

attend this year and her presence was

missed by so many.

Fourth Annual MCNHR Members Meetings

The YMCA-YWCA Winnipeg’s Women of Distinction Awards were handed out on May 2, 2012. Over 900 guests attended the Women of Distinction Awards at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, where the 2012 nominees were celebrated and honoured for their achievement. Dr. Maureen Heaman was honored with the award in the Science, Technology, and the Environment category.

Dr. Heaman has a stellar record of research achievements, including being awarded a five year research chair in New Perspectives in Gender, Sex and Health by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, over 70 peer-reviewed publications, 3 book chapters and over 100 conference and scholarly presentations to her credit. Although her work has had an impact nationally and internationally, Maureen has remained focused on issues relevant to women in Manitoba. Most re-cently, her research has focused on the factors associated with inadequate prenatal care among inner-city women in Winnipeg. In this, she has engaged women in identifying ways to improve access to prenatal care and ensured that the experiences and perspectives of marginalized women, including Aboriginal, inner city, immigrant and low-income women, were represented in her findings. She has also been co-leader of a multi-site study to test a new questionnaire to measure quality of prenatal care and participated in development and implementation of the Canadian Maternity Experiences Survey.
