With an uncanny talent for carving objects
out of wood and a strong sense for long-last-
ing design, Th. Skjøde Knudsen (1927-2007)
represents Danish wood design at its best. His
versatile designs are characterized as being
simple yet charming. The precise craftsman-
ship underlines his talent for creating design
objects with only a few details.
The mice were originally designed in 1958 and were one of Theodor Skjøde Knudsen’s most popular wood work designs.

GRO is a multifunctional plant hold-
er designed by Nordvink. It func-
tions as both a plant holder but also
as a small green house allowing
for seeds to sprout and plants to
grow. The glass bottom also serves
as a design conscious method to
give plants nourishment, fitting
perfectly into the planter’s bottom
with built-in water holes. GRO takes
green living to a new level with its
functionality and design.

Nørbjerg and Sanne Kyed. The pair hold a degree in
product design from the Aarhus School of Archi-
tecture in Denmark. In 2012, they won the Danish
FSC Design Award for the best sustainable and
commercial product, a recognition which kicked off
their career. In a short period of time they have re-
ceived international attention for their work which
can be characterized as functional design.

Why did you become designers?
We have always loved to create
and come up with new ideas,
and being a designer allows you
to do just that. We are solution
oriented people, so being a
designer is a perfect fit because
at the end of the day you are to
understand people and their
needs and to come up with
answers for these.
Where do you find inspiration?
The most inspirational impuls-
es are the ones we get from our
everyday life, for instance ob-
serving interesting people that
walk by and their daily situa-
tions. We find great inspiration
in studying behaviors and how
they have an influence over how
we live. Can we change or en-
hance these behaviors through
design? This is always an
interesting question for us. We
build ideas by observing target
groups and finding solutions to
their everyday challenges.
What was your inspiration
behind GRO?
We wanted to create a multi-
functional plant holder that
both serves as a home for
plants but also as a small
greenhouse allowing seeds to
sprout and plants to grow. The
design behind GRO is a classic
example of our attempt to pos-
itively influence everyday situ-
ations. Not only does the plant
holder have aesthetic details,
but it is also practical. Generally
plant holders are either closed
in the bottom – which works
against the plants livelihood, or
there are holes in the bottom
- which results in short-cut
solutions to catch water falling
through the planter. In addition
to this, when plant holders are
not being used, many people
put them away, but with the
glass fitting into the top of the
Lucie Kaas AW17 Feature > Nordvink
holder, it can work as a little
storage con-
tainer. The glass bottom was
really a thoughtful addition to
GRO - it is in many ways the
most functional part of the
product.
How does the merging of
materials come into play in
the design?
GRO is made of ceramic and
mouth-blown glass, which we
think is a harmonious combi-
nation between light and heavy.
The ceramic and glass are
complementary tone in tone
colors but at the same time
the combination of materials
creates a contrast between
the transparent glass and the
matte ceramic. Both ceramic
and glass are perfect combina-
tions for plants, the ceramic is
practical, while the glass adds
function.

E R AT
Italian design traditions meet every-
day functionality with the ERAT col-
lection designed by Alberto Bellamo-
li. Alberto has his roots in Grezzana, a
small village in Northern Italy, where
terrazzo has been produced for
centuries by local artisans. Locally
referred to as ‘the poor man’s marble’,
terrazzo is a composite material
made of scraps of marble, pigment,
and marble dust cemented together.
The stones used in the collection
have been handpicked by Alberto.
With the ERAT collection, terrazzo is
taken out of its traditional form and
reinvented for everyday use.

follow his passion for industrial design. He holds a
master’s degree from the Design School in Kolding
and during his education he interned at designer
Cecilie Manz’s studio and at Normann Copenhagen.
He has participated at several interior fairs in Eu-
rope including the IMM fair in Cologne where he was
nominated within the ‘Pure Talents Contest 2017’
with his collection Collecta. Alberto runs the
Bellamoli Studio in Kolding, Denmark.

Why did you become a
designer?
I’m a curious person and I al-
ways want to know more, learn
more and explore more. Being a
designer allows me to be curi-
ous when working with skilled
artisans, different technologies
and expanding my knowledge.
I’m not good at just sitting at a
desk – I need to get up and get
hands-on experience with for
example terrazzo.
Where do you find inspiration?
One of my biggest sources of
inspiration is my Italian sur-
roundings. The nature, colors,
and stones native to the village
Grezzana where I come from,
have had an impact on me. I’m
especially inspired when going
on terrazzo workshops, doing
samples and experimenting
with different combinations and
mixtures. Basically, I need to get
my hands dirty in order to see
and feel the material and expe-
rience the process on my own.
To me, designing terrazzo is a
process of true Italian crafts-
manship and working with such
skilled local artisans is in itself
an inspirational process.

Large marble chips used in the ERAT collection - from
the factory in Grezzana, Italy.
Wet cement - when mixed with small
marble chips it will become terrazzo.
What was your inspiration be-
hind the ERAT collection?
My inspiration behind the
collection is based on the
colors that have always been
a part of my surroundings.
The stones used are some of
the most traditional Italian
marbles transformed into a
new perspective. When starting
the design process, I started
with the ‘roots’ of the material.
I wanted to know where the
stones came from and how they
would work when cemented
together. Even though terrazzo
is versatile in its composition
it is not flexible in shape. The
ERAT collection takes terrazzo
outside of its conventional form
through applying it into usable,
everyday products.
How does the merging of
materials come into play in the
designs?
The idea was to create a
collection of products where
the focus would be entirely
on terrazzo, even when the
objects were not made entirely
out of terrazzo. So, we tried to
explore the relation of terrazzo
with other materials. I see all
the pieces of the collection as
small experiments that are
exploring the relation between
the two different materials. All
the pieces are part of the same
family, ERAT, but how the ter-
razzo appears and how you can
interact with each piece for me
is a completely different story.

tone in tone combinations in trendier colors,
bringing the pattern into a modern context.

Why did you become a
designer?
Ever since I was a kid I wanted
to create something with my
bare hands. Whether it be
drawing, playing with LEGO or
separating things from each
other and assembling them
again, I wanted to create some-
thing new. Becoming a designer
was therefore natural to me
because it was based on my
thirst for creation. My curios-
ity for learning new aspects
about different materials and
textures are the things I love
as a designer. If I don’t create
something, I become restless.
Where do you find inspiration?
I’m not guided by interior trends
but by the people and things
I like in my surroundings. For
me, inspiration can be found
everywhere, but especially
through the people I meet in
design collaborations. The
companies I work with always
have specifications of what
they want to see and I love to
comply with these demands
and help them design products
that fit into their universe. The
dialogue with these people is
where creativity kicks in. At
the same time this is also the
difficult part of the process, be-
cause when a product is clearly
defined, I have to begin cutting
down some of my ideas and
focus in a specific direction.
What was your inspiration
behind the Macaroon?
The Macaroon came from a
dialogue with the creative di-
rector of Lucie Kaas. We talked
about a lamp that matched
the interior universe of Lucie
Kaas which already consisted
of ceramic products. The great
thing with ceramic is that you
can experiment with colors and
shades in a different way than
for example wood. The shape
of the Macaroon is obviously
inspired by the French delicacy,
‘le macaron’, which has a simple
yet elegant shape while at the
same time being appealing with
a twist of humor.
How does the merging of
materials come into play in the
design?
Together, the different materials
create a contrast which makes
the lamp stand out as edgy
but at the same time elegant.
The brass ring in the middle of
the lamp is a warm detail and
brings the lamp together from
its opal and matte glass top to
the shiny ceramic holder.

Gunnar Flørning (1932-2014) was one of
Denmark’s most successful designers
within wooden handicrafts. Though the
name was unknown by many, Gunnar’s
works were popularly sold under the name
Laurids Lønborg during the 50s, 60s, and
