Florida emerged as a slave state after the admittance of Iowa joining as a free state
President John Tyler signed Florida as the 27th state on March 3rd, 1845
It allowed the number of slave and free states t remain equal in Congress
TEXAS
In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain Americans rushed to Texas with
the new govt. welcoming the new settlers
In 1830, Mexico issued a decree closing its borders to outsiders because many Americans refused to follow rules-being Catholic, speaking Spanish, etc.
In 1835, Mexican general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna moved to punish the rebels, Sam Houston and Stephen Austin
THE ALAMO
The Texans had about 180 soldiers to take on Santa Anna’s 70,000
Texans included Davy Crockett, commander William Travis, and Jim Bowie
For 13 days the Texans held off
On March 13, 1836, Mexican cannons smashed through the Alamo’s walls
Very few Tejanos survived

TEXAS DECLARES INDEPENDENCE
On March 2, 1836, Texas declared independence from Mexico-The Republic of Texas
On May 14, 1836, Santa Anna-who was eventually captured on April 21st, recognized the independence of Texas
In September 1836, Sam Houston sent a delegation to Washington DC to ask to be annexed
Andrew Jackson refused the request
In 1845, James K. Polk signed Texas into statehood
