FROM THE EDITORI am incredibly proud to havestepped up as senior reporter andeditor at The Guardian. AfterRob Mildon’s departure, a fewweeks ago now, we have receivedmany calls wondering who’s incharge. Well, that would be me.

I have been here for almostthree years now and feelprivileged to work in such avibrant, promising communitypaper.

I’ve spent many sleeplessnights chasing stories,investigating community issuesand most of all dedicating everyounce of spare time to my job.

I am more than passionate — Ilove being a journalist. Each dayis new and exciting and the

possibilities for expansion andgrowth in a community paperare endless. In saying that, I’dlike to share some of our plansfor 2014 with you.

We aim to be the bestcommunity paper in theManawatu, offering localprofessional news that servesyou, our readers. Fromentertainment to sport andserious public concerns, we’llhave it all.

BreastScreen Coast to Coast (BSCC) hasundergone a major technology upgrade with thePalmerston North site now fully digital.

MidCentral District Health Board beganupgrading all analogue mammography machinesin 2012 in response to the National ScreeningUnit’s requirement that all mammograms beperformed digitally.

The diagnostic mammography service hasbeen relocated to 27 Amesbury Street.

BSCC has also received a mobile unit that willvisit 17 sites across the Taranaki, Wanganui,Hawke’s Bay, Tairawhiti and MidCentral DistrictHealth Board regions.

RESCUE HELICOPTER CALLOUTSFriday December 13: Ataround 9.30am the PalmerstonNorth Rescue Helicopterresponded to a callout at a farmnorth of Hunterville, for a manin his 20s involved in amotorbike accident.

The local fire brigade was onscene to prepare the landingsite. The man suffered multipleinjures after his quad bike rolledand he was stabilised on sceneby St John paramedics before

being airlifted to Wanganui in astable condition.

Monday December 16: Atabout 1pm the chopper was

called to a motorvehicle accidentnear Horopito.

Two peoplewere injuredafter a car andtractor crashed.

Local fire brigades were onscene to assist with the accidentand preparing a landing site forthe helicopter.

Both drivers suffered upperbody injuries and werestabilised on scene by St Johnparamedics before both wereairlifted to Palmerston North.

At 5.30pm a second call wasmade to the chopper. A teenagerwas involved in a quadbikeaccident on a farm nearFlemington.

He sustained multipleinjuries and was stabilised by StJohn paramedics before beingairlifted to Palmerston NorthHospital in a serious condition.

Steroid use in NZDF questionedBy ALECIA ROUSSEAU

Testing for steroid or supplementuse in the New Zealand DefenceForce needs to be strengthened,according to a coroner, after amember of the Air Force diedduring a training exercise.

Coroner Carla na Nagarareleased her findings into theSeptember 2009 death last week anddetermined the man, whose name issuppressed, died of cardiacarrhythmia after consuming acombination of anabolic steroidsand dietary stimulants.

The report stated the man hadbeen involved in completing a45-minute training session and wasreported to have felt dizzy and out ofbreath 15 minutes into it. Afterbeing offered the chance to go to amedical centre, he declined andcontinued with the drill but, upon

completing the exercise, hecollapsed.

Resuscitation efforts failed torevive the man who was declareddead at the scene an hour later.

Pills, discovered in his roomafter the incident, were found tocontain methandrostenolone, asynthetic anabolic steroid whichpromotes muscle growth. Anothersubstance was identified astamoxifen citrate, a drug used toconquer the side effects of steroids.

A friend of the man said he wasalso known to use the sportssupplements Rip Freak and SuperPump. The coroner was told RipFreak is known to contain DMMA,an illegal substance that heightensheart rates and blood pressure, andhas been responsible for inducingstrokes in young people.

‘‘This case highlights the riskspeople can unwittingly take using

not only anabolic steroids, but alsosupplements which are eitherapparently legal or illegal but able tobe accessed over theinternet,’’coroner na Nagara said.

An NZDF spokespersonconfirmed they do not test forsteroids but have policies in place todiscourage the use of illegalsubstances.

‘‘The NZDF has issued a HealthPolicy Directive (HPD) that outlinesthe risks associated with the use ofthese products.’’

Coroner na Nagara’s findingsstated the relevant HPD did notinclude reference to the possibilityof sudden death. ‘‘I recommend thatthis directive is amended to includereference to the fact that suddencardiac death is a risk associatedwith the use of anabolic steroids,dietary supplements and bodybuilding products.’’

More than $135,000 has beendonated to the Palmerston NorthRescue Helicopter as part of theannual Woodville Lions’ SuzukiCoast to Coast.

The day-long motorcycle ridewhich has been running for 21years, reached Himatangi’sshores again last weekend withmore than 400 bikers from acrossthe country joining the convoy.

Lions’ members Clive andShirley Boyden who haveorganised the venture for it’sentirety, were thrilled at whatseemed to be their biggestturnout. ‘‘This is just brilliant —we need all the support we can getfor the chopper. Living in thecountry we know how importantit is,’’ Mr Boyden said.

After losing their son to cancerin the past year, the crowd showed

their appreciation and gifted thecouple a special tree.

‘‘Our son was also a rider — wereally appreciate all the supporteveryone has given us over thepast year,’’ Mr Boyden said.

After registrations werecleared, the trail was off toWoodville to join in the Christmasparade, before having a picniclunch and heading through toAkatea.

‘‘It’s a great way to help out thechopper because this is a well

organised and trouble free event. . . we have marshalls placed atvarious points wearing hi-visvests and we encourage the ridersto be mindful of others on theroad,’’ Mr Boyden said.

‘‘You never know when you aregoing to need the rescuehelicopter — it’s important tokeep showing our support.’’

The 200km Coast to Coast is thelongest running consecutivefundraiser for the RescueHelicopter.

Palmerston North police havebeen pedalling around the city in anew initiative aimed to increasepublic interaction and help keepthe community safe.

The Cops on Bikes initiativehas seen three local police officersdon helmets, shorts and highvisibility vests as well ashydration packs for the thirstywork of biking around Highburyand the CBD.

‘‘It’s a good way of getting out inthe community and makes us moreapproachable than when we’repatrolling in cars,’’ explainssergeant Paki.

‘‘People enjoy seeing officersout and about and we’ve had a lotof positive comments from thepublic.’’

‘‘It’s great to get some fresh airon the legs,’’ sergeant Cornwallsaid.

Bicycle patrols have beensuccessful in other areas of NewZealand and are the norm in manycountries overseas, so PalmerstonNorth police wanted to trial theidea locally.

‘‘It’s too early to say yet but wethink it’s been positive for crimerates,’’ said sergeant Paki.

While police cars are obviousand loud, bikes can get aroundquietly and are easier tomanoeuvre which can assist indeterring crime, he added.

The policemen involved are ontheir bikes for two to three hoursat a time and have scheduledduties throughout the city eachday such as patrolling carparksand talking to beggars.

‘‘It also provides a bit ofreassurance for retailers whenthey see us out there, especiallyduring the Christmas season,’’sergeant Cornwall said.

The bikes, provided by PedalPushers, are also available to bedeployed to other locations ifneeded.

‘‘We’re wanting to get them inuse more over summer, the NewYear and school holidays,’’sergeant Paki said.

‘‘It brings a lot of jobsatisfaction being out there amongthe community.’’

Over 200 patients in Palmerston Northhospital will be receiving roast lamb andturkey with homemade stuffing and gravyfor Christmas lunch, followed bytraditional plum pudding or pavlova fordessert.

A vegetarian filo roll is the second optionfor the main, accompanied by roastvegetables, baby carrots and green beans.

Catering company Spotless have thecatering contract and have been cateringfor Christmas inpatients since 1994.

One hundred patients in Wanganui and20 at Horowhenua Health Centre will alsobe offered Spotless’s festive menu, as well as153 meals on wheels recipients.

It’s a huge undertaking that requires agreat deal of planning. Each year Spotlessmanagers and chefs get together to plan theChristmas menu. Patient feedback is takeninto account from the previous Christmas.

‘‘We get an overwhelmingly positivereaction from patients and staff. It’s anawful day to be in hospital so we makeevery effort to go the distance for eachpatient. Our staff really give themselves tothe effort and receive significantsatisfaction in return,’’ said regionalmanager Peter Birch.

‘‘It’s so much more than just anotherday’s meal — we want to leave it positiveand memorable for all.’’

Turkey, pavlova and all the trimmingswill be on the menu for inpatients atArohanui Hospice. Patients are also treatedto caroling leading up to December 25.

‘‘We encourage people to be at homewith their families on Christmas day ifpossible or encourage them to bring theirfamilies and presents, their Christmas, tothe hospice,’’ said inpatient charge nurseKate Timmon.

A traditional roast turkey and hamdinner is on the cards for MetlifecareCarroll St residents where staff have alsoorganised christmas light tours, carolsinging and a Christmas Eve barbecue.

Have a plan forfestive hamThat sassy, salty-sweet meat, fine-grainedand succulent, bursts with incomparableflavour at each bite — that’s a well-glazedChristmas ham.

Glazing provides the final flourish — itfinishes the picture. Beyond visual allure,there’s taste. Sweetness is easy — brownsugar, honey, golden syrup and otherprocessed or unrefined sugar sources are soessential to most ham glazes they seeminevitable. Adding fruit is another natural,both for its candying effect and for its tang.

A pinch of spice is essential. Try grindingwhole cloves just before dusting them overthe meat in advance of glazing. Freshlygrated nutmeg or a whole cinnamon sticksimmered with the glaze also adds a certainpiquancy. For seasonings round up the usualones, if you wish — dry mustard, freshlyground black or white pepper, or powderedginger.

Offbeat spices, such as Chinese five-spicepowder or ground star anise, also add aunique flavour. Herbs and seeds such asthyme or cumin lend interesting notes butmay be acquired tastes.

Piquancy often is overlooked in moretraditional ham glazes. Pineapple provides it.Citrus juice — lemon, orange or more daringgrapefruit or lime — lends a decided splashto the flavour when it’s part of the basemixture. So does a dollop of preparedmustard, which can be thoroughly whiskedinto the glaze just before it’s spread.Whichever elements you ultimately choose,most glazes are cunningly simple to concoct.For those who want to try, here’s a failsaferecipe:

Apricot glazed baked hamIngredients:One fully cooked ham,whole cloves 1⁄4

to 1⁄2 cup orangemarmalade, 1pkt dried apricots, 1⁄4 cupapricot brandy, apple juice or apricot nectar 1⁄4 teaspoonpaprika.

Method:Score hamon top in diamond shapes andplacewhole cloves at points where lines intersect. Brushhamwithmarmalade. Combine apricots, brandy andpaprika in batter bowl. Microwave on high for threeminutes. Arrange apricots over hamand pour over orbrush on remaining glaze. Bake in oven for about 45minutes at around 160C. Slice after 15minutes standing.

Women in Palmerston North whosuffer from disordered eating arenow able to get help.

With no support groupsavailable for the past eight years,Morgan Booker and Sue Lynch ofthe Palmerston North Women’sHealth Collective (PNWHC) saw aneed in the community and filledit. A free 15-week course wasdeveloped and began inSeptember for women who sufferfrom ‘‘all kinds’’ of disorderedeating.

‘‘A lot of work went intofiguring out what kind of thingsshould go into the programme,’’

said group co-facilitator andcounsellor Sue Lynch.

‘‘We wanted to help womenunderstand they’re not alone inthis and in that sense, having it asa group made for a whole differentdynamic.’’

While funding for the groupwas difficult to come by, it waseventually gained through alotteries grant. To be able to offerthe group again, funding willhave to be sourced elsewhere.

‘‘It’s an area that there needs tobe resourcing for,’’ said MsLynch.

One participant noted that it’snot an easy issue to deal withbecause unlike with drug or

alcohol addictions, you can’t ‘‘gocold turkey’’ with food.

Eating disorders clinicianShelly Cooper from Wellingtonvisited the group, giving herinsight into the area.

‘‘I felt really privileged to be amember of the group,’’ said oneparticipant who wished to remainanonymous. ‘‘It was such a hugesupport each week to come to aplace we all felt really comfortablein.’’■ The group runs once a week fortwo hours and covers a variety oftopics including stress management,body image, themedia andperfectionism. Oh, little town of Bethlehem!with Michael Dally and Pearl Forster

At this time of year, Christian thoughtsturn to the town of Bethlehem, thebirthplace of Jesus Christ. The familiaricons re-emerge in shop windows, storedisplays and school nativity plays — thestable, the manger, Mary and Joseph, thethree wise men, and the Star of Royalbeauty-bright. The music is also familiar,and for most, even those with few religiousaffiliations, the nostalgia of everyChristmas past permeates the atmosphere.

In the midst of all the festivities, though,hangs the question, what do most of usreally know about the town of Bethlehem?Its history highlights this ancient place astruly multilateral; even its name derivesfrom different sources, both focused onfood. Bet Lam was the Arabic name, whichtranslates as, The House of Meat (it was amarket town) and the Hebrew name wasBet Leem, meaning The House of Bread. Asfar back as 1400BC Bethlehem was recordedas being a Canaanite city and while it hasstrong Christian ties, it is in fact today a

Palestinian city of about 25,000 people.Administered by a mostly Muslim Council,it is the capital of the BethlehemGovernorate of Palestinian Authority witha roughly 60:40 Muslim:Christian mix plusseveral thousand refugees. The Council isdominated by Hamas, and has a femalemayor (the town’s first). She is Fatahmember Vera Baboun, a Christian, and shewas elected in October last year. Vera is amother of five children, has a mastersdegree in African-American literature, andlectures at Bethlehem University. Vera wonthe election on a platform of creating jobsfor young people, many of whom leave thecity to look for work elsewhere. Fought overby many forces from many faiths downthrough the centuries, Bethlehem wasfinally set up in 1995 as the headquarters forthe Palestinian National Authority.

As one would expect, tourism is the mainindustry. More than two million peoplevisit each year and the peak season is aboutnow. More than 30 hotels fill with Christiansightseers and pilgrims, most of them keento see and photograph the Church of theNativity which houses the site where manybelieve the Christ Child was actually born.Next door is the cave where the originalversion of the Holy Bible, the Vulgate waswritten. However, Jewish people are alsoattracted to one of their holy sites in thecity, Rachel’s Tomb. Tourists love to collectsouvenirs and mementos and the industrykeeps over 300 handicraft shops very busyat this time of year. For a really meaningfulgift, however, the women of Bethlehemhave been renowned since ancient times forthe exquisite bridal silks and other fabricsthey weave with silver, and even gold, shotthrough the material.

As for the climate, if you are thinking ofvisiting Bethlehem at Christmas time, takean overcoat. Perhaps a scarf and gloves, too,because it can be quite chilly (as low as 5°C),it will probably rain, and it has even beenknown to snow in December.

Microgreens for summer entertainingAlthough we love the idea of growing ourown herbs and veges, sometimes it’s just toohard. But, if you’re short of time or spaceand homegrown food seems to be too muchof a challenge, microgreens could be theanswer.

Microgreens are tiny plants that are likeslightly grown-up sprouts. But whilesprouts use just the energy stored in theseed itself, microgreens go one step further.

They are sown into a medium (usually,but not always, potting mix), and areallowed to develop a root system and somesmall leaves. Unlike sprouts, which can beproduced in a kitchen cupboard,microgreens need to be grown in light sothey can begin to photosynthesise. Alsounlike sprouts which are eaten roots andall, microgreens are harvested by cuttingthem with scissors just above the soil level.

This summer Yates has introduced astarter selection of microgreen seeds.Choosing the initial varieties waschallenging. They had to germinatereadily, be fast growing, look attractiveand, most importantly, taste good.

Yates grew a number of veges and herbsin trial pots and staff members were invitedto take part in taste tests. Some varietieswere rejected because of patchygermination, some because they were tooslow and some because they just didn’ttaste great.

Eventually, the list was whittled downand the four starter varieties were chosen.Yates gave these jewel names — RocketEmeralds, Amaranth Red Garnets,Cabbage Rubies and Mizuna Red Gems —that emphasised their good looks.

One of the best things aboutmicrogreens is that they take up so littlespace. Even an indoor windowsill can

house your own mini microgreen factory.Microgreens must have some light but

direct sunlight will probably be too strong.Bright indirect light is best.

Containers don’t have to be deep —about 5cm to 8cm is ideal.

Remember too, that microgreens will beeasier to harvest if the mix comes near butnot right up to, the top of the container.Plastic salad containers are ideal becausethey often come with a lid that can be keptclosed through the germination period.Don’t forget to punch some drainage holesin the base; good drainage is essential.Other, more attractive containers willimpress visitors — your choice is limited byyour imagination.

Fill the container with Yates BlackMagic Seed Raising Mix. Firm the mix intoplace, water and allow to drain.

Sprinkle the seed thickly over the topand cover with a thin layer of mix (possiblyusing a dedicated kitchen strainer to evenlydistribute the mix). Water with a mistsprayer, or sit the container in water andallow the moisture to seep up from below.

Because they’re sown closely together,the little plants tend to grow upright andstraight but, if the light is coming from onlyone side (as will happen if they’re on awindowsill), you’ll need to turn thecontainer regularly.

Harvest microgreens when they areabout 3-5cm tall and use them to jazz upsoups, salads, sandwiches and omelettes, orsimply sprinkle them as an attractive andnutritious garnish.

Food safetyat ChristmasFor most of us it’s well into the barbecueseason but, if you are only firing it up forthe first time this Christmas/New Yearthen you need to consider aspects of foodsafety so your guests don’t get the dreadedChristmas barbecue-belly.

Warm spring and summertemperatures and cooking food outdoorsprovide the ideal situation for bugs tomultiply in food and cause foodborneillness. That means you need to takespecial care when preparing, cooking andstoring food for a barbecue. To preventmaking your mates sick this festive season,remember to follow the Clean, Cook, Chillmessages:■ Clean your barbecue before cooking.■ Wash and dry your hands before youprepare food and every time after youtouch raw meat or poultry.■ Before you start handling food, makesure all barbecue tools and all surfaces onwhich you put food are clean.■ Precook chicken, meat patties andsausages before barbecuing.■ Marinate meats in a covered containerin the fridge.■ Have clean plates and cooking utensilsready.■ Keep raw meat away from other ready-to-eat foods.■ Remove cooked food from the hotplateusing clean utensils before adding anymore raw meat.■ Turn the food regularly so that it cooksevenly.■ Minced meat, meatloaf and sausagesshould be cooked until steaming hot rightthrough, and pork and poultry juicesshould run clear — use a thermometer.■ Use a clean plate for cooked items.■ If the supermarket is more than 30minutes from your home, pack yourchilled and frozen purchases in a chillybin.■ Keep meat, poultry and other perishablefoods cold until you are ready to cook them.■ Separate raw meat and poultry fromcooked and ready to eat foods in therefrigerator.■ Keep your food covered to preventcontamination from insects, birds andpets.■ Cover and refrigerate any leftovers assoon as possible after cooking.■ Throw out perishable food that you haveleft at room temperature for more than twohours.

Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts presents two special endof year exhibitions which showcase the talents ofrenowned potter Trevor Wright and LizaHaarhoff, a painter new to the gallery scene who isshowing her work alongside that of her daughterAmy.

The work will be shown in the gallery’schanging exhibition space until TuesdayDecember 31. Mr Wright formerly of PalmerstonNorth, is an award-winning ceramic artist whosework can inspire, amuse and entertain theviewing public.

Ms Haarhoff’s portraiture is finely detailed;classically presented and often drawn from lifeusing her daughter’s face as the visage of choice.Amy uses her drawing skills to capture youngwomen in special moments and to put on paperwhat must be the fertile mind view of youth.

The juxtaposition of strongly presented vesselswith sensuous renderings of the soul should makefor an exciting finish to the exhibition year atTaylor-Jensen Fine Arts.

Liza Haarhoff’s current works ‘‘reveal an in-depth investigation of the way we make ourjourney through life, the way we perceiveourselves, and how this changes over time withincreasing insight.’’

Amy loves being in the outdoors with her horse— a source of inspiration for artwork. The youngartist plans to continue developing her artisticstyle and intends to work towards introducingcolour and vibrancy to her works.

Think big for a brighter future is thetheme for the Samoa Star Search Top 8finalist’s tour of New Zealand 2013. StarSearch is a programme that is Samoa’sTV1 version of NZ Idol and as part of thefinal prizes the Top 10 are awardedreturn tickets to New Zealand for aholiday.

This is the first year for a scheduledtour. Palmerston North was a city wherethe tour manager Sopo Su’a Elia studiedand therefore wanted to share thisexperience with the stars.

This stop in Palmerston North is alsoto give back to residents, by showcasingyoung talent from Samoa to inspireother young Pacific Island youth who aretrying to hold on to their identity.

The Top 8 will be travellingthroughout the country and they hope toachieve some positive outcomes fromthis tour, as this is the first time that sixof them have left Samoa.

TV1 Samoa aims to inspire their starsand develop the talents which wereshowcased during the last Star Search.

2013 winner Theresa Fruean isexcited to be going on the tour and she

wants to learn as much as she can todevelop her talent.

They have a tight schedule which willexpose them to a snapshot of educationin art and music institutions, recording

Local couple grants Christmas wish

A Palmerston North couplehave made a young man’sdreams come true afterallowing him to spend the nightunder their Christmas lights.

Ngaire Theobald and herhusband Phil, invited 19-year-old Elliott Grant down fromThames after hearing his onlywish was to help put upChristmas lights then sleepunderneath them.

‘‘My granddaughter met hisbrother and mentioned that herNana puts up lights — he heardthis and immediately asked ifhe could come down and help,’’explained Mrs Theobald.

Elliott, who suffers from a

learning disability, waited 12months and saved his ownmoney to buy a plane ticket.

Much to his amazement, hewas joined in the flight by Julesfrom the Topp Twins.

‘‘That was his other dream —

to meet the Topp Twins and lowand behold here she is sitting onthe plane,’’ Mrs Theobaldadded.

After putting up theirextensive set of lights, thecouple took Mr Grant down to

help with Christmas parade lastweekend.

‘‘I’ve always wanted to putup lights and I helped with theparade — I like giving,’’ Elliottsaid.

After working with disabled

people for almost 30 years, MrsTheobald was excited aboutopening up her home.

‘‘It really doesn’t bother meand it’s not costing us anythingto make his dreams come true.

‘‘Those with disabilitiesoften have one main focus andfor Elliott it’s Christmaslights.’’

Elliott said the generouscouple had enabled him to fulfila dream he’s had for as long ashe can remember.

‘‘I’ve always been into them— I spend hours walkingaround Thames looking at thembut have never been allowed toput them up.

‘‘I’m hoping to do it againnext year.’’

Positive timesahead for 2014with IANMcKELVIENational MP

As we head towardsChristmas, it’s alwaystimely to reflect on ourachievements over the pastyear and look ahead.

It’s been a really busyyear. I have especiallyenjoyed getting out andabout in this large anddiverse electorate. Thereare so many resourcefuland clever people and thesense of community spiritis inspiring.

School is out for thesummer. We have a wealthof academic and sportingtalent in our region whichhas been celebrated at themany prizegivings andaward ceremonies overrecent weeks. I havecertainly enjoyed visitingschools and early childhoodcentres throughout thearea this year.

I was fortunate to attendboth the Rongotea andMarton Christmas parades.Rongotea put on a greatshow that was stronglysupported by a good crowdof spectators. Marton’sdrew a good crowd too andfeatured some great floatsthat had been entered bythe town’s schools and pre-schools.

Recently I also attended

a Grey Power meetingwhich was both enjoyableand informative. It gave mea real insight into what theissues affecting our seniorcommunity are and whatreally matters to them. Ihave thoroughly enjoyedmy time in Wellington thisyear, and in particular myroles on the PrimaryProduction, Law and Orderand Regulations’ ReviewSelect Committees. Themany passionate debates inthe House, and being able tocatch up with some of thevisitors to Parliament whohave made the trip downare also highlights thatwarrant a mention.

As the economy grows,we are seeing new jobscreated and unemploymentfalling. New Zealand is nowamong the top handful ofcountries for growth in thedeveloped world. Inflation

is at record lows. So aremortgage interest rates.

We can certainly reflecton 2013 being a productivegrowth year. For those of usliving in the Rangitikei,which represents heartlandrural and provincial NewZealand at its best, we canalso reflect on the vital partour region plays in thenation’s economy.

I’m looking forward toanother busy year as wefocus on the issues thatmatter—a strongereconomy and more jobs,better frontline health andeducation services and asafer New Zealand.

One last thing, it’s aprivilege to be yourMember of Parliamentrepresenting this fantasticpart of the world and I’mlooking forward to whatpromises to be a busy 2014.I’d like to take thisopportunity to wish you alla very merry Christmasand my best wishes for ahappy, healthy andprosperous New Year.

Sport Manawatu hasliaised with the REACHgroup (Roslyn Educationand Community Healthgroup) to bring thisexciting new programme tothe area, and is nowaccepting referrals to fillthe final spots for 2014.

This initiative is adevelopmentallyappropriate programmefocused on developingbasic movement skills inchildren aged 4-7 years,and lifestyle and nutritioneducation for families. It’shoped that in providingthis opportunity for youngchildren to master theseskills, they will engagemore confidently in sportor active recreation inschool, at home and in thewider community.

Roslyn School and thesurrounding communityoffer an ideal environmentfor the programme.

The school’s facilitiesand close proximity toFreyberg Pool enable SportManawatu to deliverquality sessions whichfocus on basic skillsdevelopment.

As readers will be aware, thishas already been an extra-busyyear for Manfeild Park yetthere’s one more very big eventto come.

Wrapping up this year andstarting the next is the 20th Scout

Jamboree, acamp-outon amassivescale atManfeildPark fromSaturday,December28 toMonday,January 6.

Jambor-ees are held every three yearsand our Feilding venue haspreviously played host in 1984and 2005.

This one is shaping up to beextra-special. The theme, toprovide ‘‘the experience of theirScout time’’ is certainly beinglived up to. The Scoutingmovement here remains in greathealth; it supports 16,000 youngpeople aged 6 to 26 with life skillsof problem-solving, teamwork,citizenship, and healthy living,with access to a large range ofoutdoor activities well beyondthe traditional view.

This jamboree is open to allNew Zealand Scouts, Years 6-10(New Zealand school years) andinternational Scouts, up to age15. I’d ask the region to extend awarm welcome to contingents

from the North Cape to Bluff aswell as Scouts from many of thePacific Island nations, plusSingapore and Hong Kong. Thisyouth contingent of around 3500will be joined by support staff,some bringing their families. Allin all quite a crowd and we’vebeen told to expect at least 6000people.

Manfeild is popular for thisevent because it’s large enoughto host almost all activities on-site. Nonetheless, the jamboreewill encompass all of our87-hectare facility. The entiregreensward between Manfeildstadium and South Street is totransform into a vast tent cityoccupied by the world’s biggestyouth organisation. Troopsarrive at Manfeild Park from8am on December 28, with the

opening ceremony that evening.The closing ceremony is on theevening of January 5.

We hope the weather will be alittle kinder to the jamboree thanit was for the Royal A&P ShowNew Zealand. The squallyweather that swept the entirelower North Island on showweekend (December 6-8)unfortunately did not spare usand took its toll on crowdnumbers, though we wereheartened to enjoy daily crowdcounts in their thousands.

Nonetheless, we could see asilver lining to those dark rainclouds — impressive entries forthe equestrian, livestock andagricultural classes and verypositive feedback from allcompetitors and participants inthese and aligned categories that

make up the heart of a ‘‘Royal’’,have been a great fillip.

This was the consortium’sfirst run at a royal show and itwas also at the new venue. Welearned a lot and have alreadytaken on board how we canimprove for our repeatperformance in 2014, but feel wecan already hold our heads highon the strength of some generousand positive feedback.

Royal Agricultural Societypresident John Grigg of NorthCanterbury, and HighCommissioner of the UnitedKingdom to New Zealand VickiTreadell were each kind enoughto call Manfeild Park a venue ofexceptional standard. The samecould be said of the quality andsheer breadth of exhibits andentertainments. One of these

we’re especially proud that didattract big interest was theFarmlands Farmworld.

This was the centre ofattention on opening day whenwe hosted more than 2000 pre-and primary-school-agedchildren at the schools’ activityprogramme. They crowded thepetting zoo which had donkeys,hens, chicks, young goats andlambs.

In contrast, it was a shamethat fewer people than expectedwent to the concerts, a key part ofthe evening entertainmentpackage.

Post jamboree, we will bestraight into organising ourhighest-profile motorsport eventof the year, the New ZealandGrand Prix. Toyota RacingSeries is delivering anotherheavily international field tocontest the country’s greatestmotorsport prize. We’re alsodelighted that this meeting willdeliver the inauguralinvolvement of the high-profileand star-studded V8SuperTourer category at anational series motor-racingmeeting.

This is my final column of theyear so, on behalf of everyone atManfeild, have a great and safeChristmas and New Year. Hitting the road this festive season? Horizons Regional Council road safety

coordinator Desley Monks offers a few tips to help ensure a safe arrival.

• Driving when you're tired can have the same effect on your skills as driving after

drinking alcohol. Try to share the driving where possible and take regular breaks.

• Consuming alcohol or other substances can impair your judgement and slow your

reaction times behind the wheel. If you plan to drink, don’t plan to drive – choose

a sober driver or arrange a place to stay.

• Unrestrained passengers, animals and objects become missiles when you have to

stop quickly. Remember all children up to the age of 7 years now need to be in an

approved child restraint.

• The faster you drive the less time you have to respond and the more likely you

are to suffer a serious injury in a crash. Keep your speed down and drive to the

conditions. Watch your following distance and if you have a number of vehicles

following you, pull over and let them pass.

• Anything that diverts your attention for more than a second can significantly

increase your likelihood of having a crash or near-crash. Little things like setting

the radio station before you start your journey can help reduce the risk.

• If your vehicle is roadworthy you are less likely to experience a break-down. It’s

best to get things checked before you drive.

• You can report dangerous or erratic driving by dialing *555 free from your mobile

phone. However, if you have to use your phone, remember to pull over.

The way we drive can affect others. Help keep our roads safe by taking

responsibility every time you get behind the wheel and enjoy the festive season.

BE PATIENT: Traffic delays are to be expected during the holiday period.

Drive to the conditions:When driving you need to judge the safe

speed needed for the stretch of road you’reon at that particular time. If you don’tadjust your speed to suit the conditions,you may be driving too fast, even if you’rewithin the speed limit.

Rain quickly reduces tyre grip andexcess water on the road can spell disaster.Wind gusts can side-swipe you unexpect-edly, while sun glare can blind you.Weather conditions can change quickly. Ifthe weather is changeable, use yourheadlights, window-wipers, demisters andsun visors before you need them. Driveresponsibly and reduce your speed.

During rush hour, holidays or specialevents when there is more traffic going at aslower pace, go with the flow, do not takeunnecessary risks overtaking, and keep asafe following distance. The speed limit isnot the safe option: slow down. Allow moretime to reach your destination, travelearlier or later than the peak times, or takean alternative route.Keep inside the speed limit:

Drivers who travel above the speedlimit endanger the lives of others. We’ve allheard the saying ‘‘speed kills’’ too manytimes. Higher speeds result in injuries thatare more severe.Look for hazard cues:

Safe driving involves looking forimportant hazard cues. The faster youtravel on a road, the more likely you are tomiss these. And if you’re speeding, you’lltravel further before you react and applythe brakes. When you have applied thebrakes, you’ll travel further before youstop.

At faster speeds there’s a greater chancethat other road users will misjudge howfast you’re travelling.

Be prepared for the unexpected:Our road network includes state high-

ways, motorways, rural gravel roads andurban through roads, and provides plentyof opportunity for the unexpected tohappen. Pedestrians stepping out to crossthe road, cyclists, vehicles pulling out fromside roads, livestock, tractors and roadworks can all catch drivers unaware. Stayalert and slow down so you have time toreact safely if the unexpected happens.How does speed affect road safety?:

The faster you drive on the road, themore likely you are to crash. As yourspeed increases: The distance you need inorder to stop increases; There is a greaterprobability that you will be going too fastif you meet an unexpected change in roadconditions; There is a greater chance thatother road users will misjudge how fastyou are travelling; The severity of injuriesresulting from a crash is directly relatedto the impact speed of the vehicle, whetheror not speeding was a factor in the crash.What happens when a speeding vehiclecrashes?:

When a vehicle crashes, it undergoes arapid change of speed. However, theoccupants keep moving at the vehicle’sprevious speed until they are stopped,either by hitting an object or by beingrestrained by a safety belt or airbag.Human bodies are not meant to be hurledagainst objects at speed, and the faster thespeed, the more severe the injuries. If apedestrian is hit by a vehicle, the severityof their injuries is related to the impactspeed. The probability of death for apedestrian rises steeply from 10 per cent atan impact speed of 30 km/h to 70 per centat 50km/h. The risks for vulnerablepedestrians, such as the elderly and youngchildren, are higher.

As many of you plan your holidays, yourpets are oblivious to theirs! If your pets aregoing to the boarding kennels or cattery,ensure you find out from your particular‘pet hotel’ exactly which vaccinationsthey require, well before you get there.

If your pet hasn’t been previouslyvaccinated and depending on his orher age, your dog or cat may require an

initial course of two to three vaccinations,three to four weeks apart to ensure fullprotection. It is therefore important toensure you allow enough time for thesebefore your holiday.

Most boarding kennels require dogs to beup-to-date with their routine vaccinationsbut some require an additional vaccinationto help protect against canine contagious

cough. This is a very contagiousrespiratory tract infection which causesa dry hacking cough sometimes lasting

for several weeks. We recommendvaccinating against this disease.

The canine contagious cough intranasalvaccine works very quickly and shouldbe given at least 3 days before boarding.Routine vaccinations in dogs and catsshould be given at least two weeks beforeboarding.

Most catteries also require your cat to beup-to-date with vaccinations. However itis important to check directly with yourparticular cattery or boarding kennels to

ensure you and your pet enjoy the holidayseason.

Holidays get tails waggingKiwi pets are well travelled withalmost half of New Zealand petowners revealing they take theirpets on holiday, according to thelatest travel survey from leadingtravel website Wotif.co.nz.

Wotif.co.nz product directorDonna Rodios said 90.9 per centhave a pet and 46.3 per cent saidthey take their pet on holiday.

‘‘Dogs are by far NewZealand’s most travelled pet,with 85.1 per cent of respondentstaking their pooch on holiday,while 11.9 per cent said theytravelled with their cat andother travellers even admitted totaking their bird, rabbit, guineapig or fish away,’’ Ms Rodiossaid.

‘‘Almost half the respondentssaid they go everywhere withtheir pet and holidays were noexception, with 96.7 per cent of

pets travelling by car and only1.9 per cent flying to theirholiday destination.

‘‘Holiday homes were themost popular pet-friendlyaccommodation choiceaccording to 51.5 per cent ofrespondents with caravan andcamping parks following with20.6 per cent of the vote and only15.9 per cent of respondentschoosing self-cateringapartments.’’

Ms Rodios said some petlovers even went to the extent ofsmuggling their pet intoaccommodation which wasn’tpet-friendly.

‘‘18.7 per cent of Kiwirespondents admitted tosneaking their pet intoaccommodation that didn’tallow pets and one respondenteven smuggled their dog into a

motel in a backpack.‘‘With sneaky cover-ups like

this one it’s no surprise only 9.9per cent were caught. There wasno shortage of amusing pettravel stories with one pet ownerrevealing their dog jumped thefence into the neighbouringhouse through the window andstole their hot roast chickenright off the bench.

‘‘Another respondent saidtheir daughter’s pet turtleescaped and they spent ageslooking for him and finallyfound him hidden in a closet.

‘‘Some respondents alsothought they left their pets incapable hands but came home tofind their pet had changedcolour.

‘‘One respondent revealedthey were surprised to find theirpet had babies a few weeks after

returning from holiday — beforethey had left their pet was a boy!

‘‘With so many pet lovers it’snot surprising 22.6 per cent ofrespondents revealed they

bought souvenirs for their petwhile away on holidays withoutthem, 17 per cent carried arounda photo of their pet and 10.3 percent called to chat to their pet.’’

Fans packed into RobertsonHolden International speedwayon Saturday to watch the Pumasstockcar team in action for thefirst time this season.

Up against the WellingtonYoung Guns, it looked like thePumas would have their workcut out. With the New ZealandStockcar Teams Champs only afew weeks away, the teams raceoffered both sides some valuablepractice.

The Young Guns arrived witha full-strength contingent,bolstered by Dale Robertsonreturning to the fold in a new carand Brendon Tye behind thewheel of his father Ron’s newtank, 99P.

The Pumas were without 1NZPeter Rees, who was away racingin Stratford, which gave fringe

members a chance to impress.The Pumas exploded from the

startline and quickly tookcontrol of the race, the twonewbies 36p Jay Knight and 38pDarrel Wallace taking up therunning once 54w DaleRobertson had been blocked outof second place. Wellington’schances were not helped by aking hit in a melee from 55w PaulGaskin on the stationary 99wBrendon Tye, which eventuallydisabled himself and damagedhis teammate.

Assisted by 34p GavinTaniwha’s blocking for Pumas,the Young Guns were only able toineffectually slow one at a timeand the whitewash was quicklyover.

The finishing order was: 37pJay Knight, 36p Josh Prentice,34p Gavin Taniwha, 54w DaleRobertson, 35p Alec Wilson and

51w Scott McIntosh.With the celebrations over for

the stockcar boys, it was time toget into some high speed actionwith the sprintcars. However,with the American drivers notavailable, all eyes were on thetwo young hotshots, Kapiti’sJamie Larson and Wellington’sSteven Taylor.

However, a spectacular crashin turn one of the first race saw ahard-charging Larson make anoutside move. However, he rodeover the wheel of 4p BryanMenefy and flipped violently onto the concrete fence. The crashdestroyed the chassis of Larson’scar, putting him out for thenight. He was not hurt.

With Larson out, there was noone who could match the high-flying Taylor in the 21W car, whowon both heat races and thefeature.

Two reports of a flasher targetingyoung girls in the Aramoho areaover the weekend have WanganuiPolice concerned.They say parents need to be

aware of where their children arewalking.The first incident was about

1pm on Saturday, when the manallegedly exposed himself to a10-year-old girl in Peat Park.The second was on the river

walkway not far from WanganuiRowing Club just after 11am yes-terday, when the same man alleg-edly exposed himself to two10-year-old girls and a young boy.Sergeant Kevin Smith said the

man was described as about 1.8metres tall, of medium build, welldressed in a T-shirt and jeans andwith tidily cut ‘‘darkish’’ hair.On Saturday he wore a green
