MIS, Computer Science & Computer Engineering

• Computer Engineers …

• Focus on What’s Inside the Computer; What Makes It “Work” - e.g., by Designing Integrated Circuits

• Computer Scientists …

• Focus on the Technology to Expand the Range of Computer Applications, Especially Software (like Operating Systems)

• MIS Professionals …

• Focus on the Design & Development of Systems; How to Link Users to Application Software & Other Technologies (like Multimedia); How to Solve Business Problems With Computing & Communications Technology …

Technology Quick Tour…

•Computer Engineers work on hardware, the physical devices that make up your computer like:

•Input devices – like your keyboard•Output devices – like your printer•Storage devices – like your hard drive (C drive)•Central Processing Unit (CPU)– the “brains” of your computer• RAM (Random Access Memory): a “scratchpad” for the CPU to do its work•Telecommunications devices – so your computer can send & receive information from other computers

Technology Quick Tour…

• Computer Scientists work on creating software, the set of instructions that your computer executes to carry out a specific task for you, like: Application software (programs)–

enables you to solve specific problems or perform specific tasks, like Excel

Operating system software – controls your programs and manages your hardware, like Microsoft Windows

Computer Scientists tend to work on more technical software, like operating systems

MIS …

• Is “Applied Computer Science”

• Bridges the Gap Between Theory & Practice

• Focuses on the Users of Technology

• Is Close to Business Models & Processes

• Enables New Business Models – Like eBusiness

• Assumes Technology + Management …
