CEMENT INDUSTRY IN

CEMENT Cement is a material with adhesive and cohesive

properties that makes it capable of bonding mineral fragment into a compact and rigid mass. The word cement seems to have been derived from the middle age English cyment and Latin caementum. The latter word caementum meant rough quarried stone or chips of marble from which a kind of mortar was made more than 2000 years ago in Italy. During the Middle Ages term “cement” or sement generally was made for a mortar. Common lime, hydraulic lime, gypsum plaster, pozzolana nattural and Portland cement are few of the material, which are used for cementing purposes.

MANUFACTURE PROCESS■ Raw materials Raw materials are transported to the cement plant using

either conveyors, road, rail or sea transport.■ clinker production Clinker production requires high temperatures which are

generated by the combustion of fossil and other fuels. Alternative fuels can be used in the kiln, reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and often reducing emissions to atmosphere. Alternative fuels include wastes or by-products previously destined for landfill such as used tyres, used engine oil and spent solvents

■ Cement grinding Clinker is stored on site until required for grinding into

cement or distribution to another site for finish grinding.■ Distribution Distribution of cement products occurs via road, rail or sea

transport. The final cement products are delivered to customers in bulk or in bags.

MERCURY RELEASES FROM THE CEMENT INDUSTRY

Mercury is present in the raw materials (e.g., limestone) and/or in the fuel (e.g.,coal) released in the combustion process. The major pathway for mercury releases from the cement industry is via emissions to the atmosphere.

Cement industry contributes an estimated 10% or about 190 metric tons of the estimated total of 1921 metric tons per year of global anthropogenic mercury emissions.

Emerging markets of the world will lead to an unprecedented rate of construction of new cement plants resulting in further emissions of mercury.

MINIMIZE USE OF MERCURY Minimize mercury releases to the

environment from cement manufacture Supplement existing programmes in

key, strategically selected ways to ensure that reductions are globally significant.

Support such efforts while providing additional information on cost-effective approaches for enhancing reductions of mercury emissions.

CEMENT SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE (CSI) The Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) is a global effort by 24 leading cement producers, with operations in more than 100 countries. Collectively these companies account for around 30% of the world’s cement

production and range in size from very large multinationals to smaller local producers. All CSI members have integrated sustainable development into their business

strategies and operations, as they seek strong financial performance with an equally strong commitment

to social and environmental responsibility. The CSI is an initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable

Development (WBCSD).The purpose of the Initiative is to:  - Explore what sustainable development means for the cement industry;  - Identify actions and facilitate steps cement companies can take, individually

and as a group, to accelerate progress toward sustainable development  - Provide a framework for other cement companies to become involved; and   - Create the content and context for further stakeholder engagement.

Cement Industry Cuts Carbon Emissions 17% by the collaboration of Cement Sustainability Initiative.
