Alleviating Poverty Through ProfitablePartnershipsGlobalization, Markets, and Economic Well-BeingPatricia H. Werhane, University of Virginia, USA, Scott P. Kelley, DePaul University, USA, Laura P. Hartman, DePaul University, USA and Dennis J. Moberg, Santa Clara University, USA

In this book, the authors approachpoverty alleviation from an atypicalperspective. The thesis is thatpoverty can be reduced, if noteradicated, both locally andglobally, but this will occur only ifwe change our shared narrativesabout global free enterprise, andonly if we recalibrate our mindsetsregarding how poverty issues aremost effectively addressed. Theyargue that poverty ameliorationcannot be effected by the

traditional means employed during the last century–foreignaid from developed nations and/or from non-profitinternational organizations. Rather, the authors presentevidence which demonstrates that a mindset embracinginitiatives developed by global corporations in response tothe poverty challenge is significantly more effective. Globalcompanies can alleviate poverty by seizing marketopportunities at the Base of the economic Pyramid (BoP)with the implementation of three key processes: moralimagination, systems thinking, and deep dialogue.

This approach to alleviating poverty offers some powerfulideas backed by the support of some of the leading businessethics minds in the United States. These scholars, some ofwhom are on the author team, have created a book that isunique and provocative yet still ideal for courses at theundergraduate level.

Century 2. Failed Strategies in the Alleviation of Poverty 3. Mental Models and Contributing Biases on Global Poverty4. The Global CorporationSustainable, Effective and Ethical Practices, A Case BookEdited by Laura P. Hartman, DePaul University, USA and Patricia H. Werhane, University of Virginia, USA

This text brings together case studies focusing on specific instances of corporate best practices. Toooften, we showcase cases based on questionable or unethical corporate behavior. Instead, theeditors bring together examples of how some firms got it right. Certainly, there is no claim that thecompanies in these cases are perfect; some of them may have histories that include questionablepractices. But, these are companies that work to foster trust, both internally and in their relationshipswith customers, suppliers, shareholders, and the communities in which they operate.

The book is not, however, merely a descriptive iteration of effective corporate conduct. The editorsconclude with an analysis of frameworks for corporate and managerial ethical decision-making–frameworks that help to establish models for best practices. These frameworks then can begeneralized and applied to other corporate situations, and replicated by other companies in theirsearch for excellence and the resulting avoidance of misconduct.

Ethical Dilemmas in ManagementChristina Garsten, Stockholm University, Sweden andTor Hernes, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark

This exciting new text engages withthe issue of ethical dilemmasencountered in differentorganizations. Rather thanexploring the definition of ethicalconduct, this book focuses on theway in which the process oforganization produces dilemmas ofethical behaviour. Using illustrativeaccounts from corporate settings asa basis, the book explores theconditions that lead to ethicaldilemmas and the strategies

organizations adopt to deal with these dilemmas or steeraway from them. The book suggests that ethical dilemmasare often dealt with by directing attention away from thecore problem, rather than engaging with and solving it.

Ethical Dilemmas in Management is essential reading for allstudents of business and management and ethics.

Socially Responsible InvestingDonald Schepers, Baruch College, City University ofNew York, USA

Of increasing importance in the last decade, SociallyResponsible Investing (SRI) can be described as the importantfinancial aspect of the broader Corporate SocialResponsibility (CSR) area. In both Europe and the US,pressure is being exerted not only from individual investors, but increasingly by government and policy-making bodies forcorporations to report on not just their financial performancebut also their performance from a social, ethical, andenvironmental perspective (the triple bottom line).

With the increase in the number of courses on CSR, SRI isbecoming increasingly important in its attempts to measureand influence corporate policy and behavior. As a result, there is an increased need for a book which examines thedevelopments in socially responsible investing not simplyfrom an investor’s point of view but from a broaderacademic perspective. This unique book singles out andcritically examines the mutual funds which constitute thefinancial aspect of CSR. It goes on to:

• evaluate the screening methods they employ

• investigate their role in the CSR debate

• examine their efforts to improve communities throughcommunity-based investing practices.

The first to comprehensively analyze SRI, Donald Schepers’text is a must-read for undergraduate and MBA studentsstudying corporate governance, business ethics, andfinance/investment.

2ND EDITION

Ethics for International BusinessDecision-Making in a Global Political EconomyJohn Kline, Georgetown University, USA

The newly-updated version of this groundbreaking textbook continues to provide a topical and relevant analysis of the ethicaldimensions of conducting business in a global political economy. From a starting point of applied ethics, this book introducesa common set of normative terms and analytical tools for examining and discussing real case scenarios.

Extensive real-world examples, presented in the form of exhibits, cover issues including:

• foreign production, including sweatshops

• export of hazardous products

• testing and pricing of HIV-AIDS drugs

• advertising tobacco, alcoholic beverages, and infant formula

• deceptive marketing techniques and bribery

• religious and social discrimination

• cultural impacts from ”music, movies, and malls”

• environmental issues, including oil spills, rain forest preservation, global warming, and genetically modified foods.

To keep pace with the changing landscape of global business, this new edition features:

• updated exhibits that introduce new issues and are sourced from more international publications

• increased coverage of issues arising in emerging markets

• updated descriptions and assessments of relevant international agreements

• a new glossary of terms and abbreviations

• companion website featuring links to relevant global policy documents from the UN, WHO, and UNCTAD, as well asupdated discussion-oriented information on issues and cases.

The continued globalization of business increases the relevance of this textbook and its unique focus on specificallyinternational ethical challenges faced by business, where governments and civil society groups play an active role. While mostbusiness ethics texts continue to focus heavily on ethical theory, this textbook condenses ethical theory into applied decision-making concepts, emphasizing practical applications to real world dilemmas.

Anyone with an interest in the ethical implications of international business, or the business implications of corporateresponsibility in the global market, will find this book a thought-provoking, yet balanced analysis. Clearly written, it is thetextbook of choice in this increasingly important field.

Values-Centered EntrepreneurshipDavid Y. Choi and Edmund Gray, both at LoyolaMarymount University, USA

A new brand of entrepreneurs has arrived on the businessscene, carrying with them a whole new set of values. Theypossess a sense of mission–to be socially responsible, protectthe planet, and do the right thing for all of theirstakeholders. Rather than focus exclusively on financial gain, they aim to achieve a balance between profits and one ormore causes of their choosing. In fact, they view for-profitentrepreneurship as a vehicle for social change. The authorscall these pioneers”values-centered”entrepreneurs.

This book explores how these highly unorthodox leadershave built their profitable and socially responsible businessenterprises, and what lessons can be learned for the nextgeneration of entrepreneurs. The authors examine a groupof over forty entrepreneurial companies and how eachbalanced the profit objective with social responsibility in keyaspects of their business operation–from their initialcompany formation, through growth, to exit–to buildsuccessful triple bottom-line companies. David Y. Choi andEdmund Gray particularly focus on how these firms’commitment to values affected their company missions, hiring and organizational policies, marketing strategies, financial practices, exit options, and giving programs, andvice versa. In some cases, the authors find that theentrepreneurs’ social objectives have actually strengthened, not weakened, their business enterprises. Based on theirextensive studies of these companies, the authors havedistilled a set of commonalities. The book presents ten of themost dominant and interesting of these commonalities witha focus on those policies and decisions that appeared todepart from conventional business practice.

In addition to devoting chapters to each of the coreprinciples learned from these companies, the authors alsoinclude in-depth case studies of four of the venturesfeatured in their study.

The Economics of Social ResponsibilityThe World of Social EnterprisesEdited by Carlo Borzaga, University of Trento, Italy andLeonardo Becchetti, University of Rome, Italy

Series: Routledge Advances in Social Economics

The crisis of welfare systems coupled with difficulties inpublic financing and global integration of financial, productand labour markets are generating a transition in which theold system of checks and balances (involving corporations, domestic institutions and domestic workers’ association) haschanged into a new ”three pillar” system in which bottom-up action of (a minority of) socially responsibleindividuals compensates for the weakness of domesticinstitutions and the lack of new global governance rules.

This book provides new and original research on socialentrerepeurship: consumers and investors voting with theirportfolio and groups of citizens setting up enterpriseswithout a profit goal, thus extending democraticparticipation beyond the exercise of electoral vote andthereby contributing to the rise of a fuller economicdemocracy. The specific fields which are extensively discussedin the book (fair trade, socially responsible consumption, socially responsible finance, evolution of welfare systemswith bottom-up entrepreneurial actions) are new andoriginal and with great future potential.

This book not onlyconsiders the impact of Western CSR practices in Asia, butalso provides much needed Asian perspectives on this issue. It investigates the operation of CSR in different countriesacross Asia, including China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, andBangladesh − comparing the different meanings given toCSR, and the varying degrees of success experienced indifferent national contexts. This book argues if CSR is ever torevolutionize the manner in which we trade then it needs toopen itself up to the full variety of social responsibility as itoccurs around the world. The book re-maps and refinesdebates about CSR as a global phenomenon, and will be ofgreat value to professionals making strategic decisions in theglobal business environment.

Co-productionThe Third Sector and the Delivery of Public ServicesEdited by Victor Pestoff, Institute for Civil SocietyStudies, Ersta Sköndal University College, Stockholm,Sweden and Taco Brandsen, University of Tilburg, theNetherlands

Public management research has in recent years paidincreasing attention to the third sector, especially to its rolein the provision of public services. Evidence of this is therising number of publications on the topic, as well as agrowing number of sessions and papers in academicconferences of the EGPA and IRSPM. However, much of thediscussion on its role is motivated at least as much byideology as by fact. We still lack a proper empiricalunderstanding of what happens when the third sector isdrawn into public service provision. In this thematicpresentation of Co-production: The Third Sector and theDelivery of Public Services, we will enhance thisunderstanding by presenting several new studies on thesubject. We also introduce the concepts of co-production,co-management, and co-governance as a conceptualframework that enables us to better understand suchdevelopments.

Management and the Dominance ofManagersThomas Diefenbach, University of Statchclyde, UK

In its very core, management has been, and is, all about thepower and control, interests and ideology of managers–inshort, the dominance of managers over other groups ofpeople. In order to investigate and explain this dominance, amulti-dimensional ”theory of social dominance ofmanagers,” will be developed which reveals the personaland group interests behind such claims and is based in itscore on three explanatory factors; power, interests, andideology. These factors themselves will be analyzed ascomprehensive, multi-dimensional and interdisciplinaryconcepts in order to address the complex nature ofmanagers’ dominance appropriately.

The Foundations of FemaleEntrepreneurshipEnterprise, Home and Household in London, c.1800–1870Alison Kay, University of Lancaster, UK

Alison Kay offers new insight into the motivations of theVictorian women who opted to pursue enterprises of theirown. By engaging in empirical comparisons with men’sbusiness, it also reveals similarities and differences with thesmall to medium sized ventures of male business proprietors. The link between home and enterprise is then furtherexcavated by detailed record linkage, revealing thehouseholds and domestic circumstances and responsibilitiesof female proprietors.

Using both discourse and data to connect enterprise, proprietor and household, The Foundations of FemaleEntrepreneurship provides a multi-dimensional picture of theVictorian female proprietor and moves beyond thestereotypes. It argues that active business did not excludewomen, although careful representation was vital and thishas obscured the similarities of their businesses with those ofmany male business proprietors.

Vocational TrainingInternational PerspectivesEdited by Gerhard Bosch, Institut Arbeit und Technik,Germany and Jean Charest, Université de Montréal,Canada

Series: Routledge Studies in Employment and WorkRelations in Context

The challenge for different training regimes is twofold:attracting young people into the vocational training systemwhile continuing to train workers already in employment.Yet, on the whole, most countries and their trainingsystems have failed to reach those goals. How can weexplain this contradiction? Why is vocational training seento be an ”old” institution? Why does vocational trainingnot seem to be easily adapted to the realities of thetwenty-first century?

This book seeks to respond to these important questions. It does so through an in-depth comparative analysis of thevocational training systems in ten different countries:Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Korea,Mexico, Morocco, the United Kingdom, and the USA.
