Why the drills always the drills we did this last time

To ensure the health, safety and welfare of staff and visitors during emergencies, an effective emergency response is paramount. Emergency planning requires an appropriate health staff response and coordination with community emergency services when necessary.• Mass Disaster Drill

Mass disaster drills are a critical component of every correctional facility’s emergency response plan. At least one mass disaster drill should be conducted annually so that over a three-year period each shift has participated

• The health emergency man-down drill also enables health staff to practice aspects of the emergency response plan. Industry defines such a drill as a simulated emergency affecting one individual who needs immediate medical intervention.

Critiques and Exercisesperhaps the most important aspect of conducting mass disaster and man-down drills and participating in actual events is the critique that occurs afterward. Through the critique process, weaknesses in the disaster plan may be identified and solutions can be discussed and implemented to improve future emergency response. Sharing the critiques with all health staff enables everyone to benefit from the discussion and make improvements when indicated. Individual responsibilities may be clarified or changed, and often the need to purchase or repair equipment is discussed during a critique.

The drill has a plan with it!

1. Assess Training Needs Analyse the threats and hazards Determine the suitable exercise types Assess capability Conduct pre-exercise drills or rehearsals 2. Define the Scope 3. Write a Statement of PurposePrepare pre-exercise notification Obtain support of your facility managementCoordinate with participating personnel and organisations Schedule the exercise and develop planning milestones Coordinate logistics – facilities, equipment, and support. Organise design and evaluation teams Coordinate orientations and/or training 4. Define Exercise Objectives 5. Compose a Narrative 6. Write Major and Detailed Events Plan exercise enhancements or props – maps, props, colour cards, computers, radios, etc. Prepare evaluation plan and checklists Nominate an evaluation team to determine how objectives will be evaluated and actions by participants will be monitored and measured against plans and procedures 7. Identify Expected Actions 8. Prepare Messages/Problems Conduct pre-exercise briefings Plan post exercise actions Post Exercise Meetings and After Action Reviews Identification of additional training/drills Final exercise report/after action report

SAFETY…..is part of everyday living. It is an important consideration for everyone in everything he/she does, in the home, at work or play, on streets and highways – wherever he/she goes.

Safe operating practices and procedures are vital in the drilling business because the work is hazardous, involving massive machinery, heavy tools and great physical strength.

When accidents do occur, the work can be a serious peril to life and limb. Drilling personnel must know how to work safely on a rig in order to protect themselves, costly rig equipment, and the expensive hole being drilled.

Sorry is all about YOU

• Competent Person – One who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surround or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employers and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them, or who can recommend directly to persons in authority that such corrective measures be taken.

Employee Training

• The employer must provide effective initial training and retraining as necessary and must certify that such training has been given to all employees covered by the standard. The certification must contain each employee’s name and dates of training.

THINK! If you don’t, it WILL happen.

Using personal protective equipment requires hazard awareness and training on the part of the user.

Employees must be aware that the equipment does not eliminate the hazard. If the equipment fails, exposure will occur.

To reduce the possibility of failure, equipment must be properly fitted and maintained in a clean and serviceable condition.
