Dear Fellow Retreatants :

As I refl ect upon the last year of activities and my fi rst as Chair of the Board of Directors, I am continuously inspired and grateful for the contributions of so many who make Malvern Retreat House a unique gathering place. For long time retreatants, as well as those making their fi rst retreat, it continues to offer a temporary refuge from the challenges and stresses of everyday life. It enables each of us to refresh and renew our faith or to simply give thanks for life’s blessings. I thank the other members of the Board for providing me with the opportunity and privilege to serve in this capacity. It has been a continuous learning process for me. As much as I have always appreciated the efforts of so many who have contributed to the success of the Malvern retreat mission, my admiration of their work has grown. On behalf of all retreatants, I thank our Rector Msgr. Joseph Marino and our President Jim Fitzsimmons for their prayerful leadership and all the associates who work so hard every day to maintain the facilities and operations that enable all of us to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Malvern.

On a more somber note, during this past year we lost our good friend and the ultimate Man of Malvern, Joe O’Donnell. Other than the founders of the Malvern Retreat House and John and Mary McShain and their family, we would be hard pressed to think of anyone who has contributed as much as Joe O’Donnell to this revered institution. A retreatant for 77 consecutive years, Joe served in every possible role of service to Malvern including Recruiter, C.A. Captain, Chairman of numerous committees, Board Member and President. He did it all with class, dignity and with a devout faith that served as an example to all. Please remember to keep Joe and the O’Donnell family in your prayers.

There are many good stories to report from this past year. We welcomed more than 20,000 guests to aid them in their spiritual journey. They included those attending the traditional men and women’s weekends, families, and a number of students from the archdiocesan high schools participating in their Kairos retreats. In addition, the number of daily retreats was increased to accommodate the schedules of those who might not be able to attend on a weekend, including a number of new days of refl ection and programs for those suffering from the various stresses of life. With these and other similar programs, the mission of Malvern continues to expand to assist those in need. People from all walks of life have the opportunity to experience Malvern, to refl ect upon their faith and seek spiritual guidance from our retreat directors.

During the past year the Board adopted, and working with the associates, began implementing the strategic plan that is designed to expand the mission and scope of the Malvern retreat experience to a greater number of retreatants and to reach beyond our traditional drawing area of the Philadelphia region. In addition, the restoration of St. Joseph’s Hall is in process. When completed, the installation of air conditioning and an elevator, as well as extensive interior renovations will provide us with the opportunity to accommodate a greater number of retreatants throughout the year without limitation.

These items are but a few of the good news occurrences at Malvern Retreat House. I encourage you to visit the Malvern website (www.malvernretreat.com) for updates on various retreats or news about other events. As a better alternative, I invite you to visit and simply walk the grounds, stop in for a conference or participate in one of the spiritual exercises for a brief respite from life’s daily challenges. As is often said, this is our retreat house. Through the efforts of you and so many others, including the religious and lay staff, volunteers, and most importantly, all retreatants, Malvern Retreat House has been a gift to the local community of the faithful for more than 100 years. With the ongoing generosity and effort of each one of us, Malvern Retreat House is well on its way to continuing this unique and valuable experience for the next hundred years.

Thank you for your continuing support and prayers.

Malvern Retreat House ANNUAL REPORT 2014 3

Page 4: Malvern-Annual Report-2014

FROM THE PRESIDENTDear Retreatants:

The headlines on the winter edition of Prosit looked great. We served over 20,000 retreatants, and we projected to be operating in the black for the third consecutive year. The Property Committee began the renovation of St. Joseph’s Hall and is developing plans to add a conference room in the former gift shop and an elevator in Assumption Hall. Thanks to the gifts of many of you to the Capital Campaign, these projects are possible. The Campaign ended with $2.8 million in gifts and pledges that will support the projects listed above. What a blessing.

The 2014 year also saw an expansion of retreat programs. Thanks to Msgr. Marino, we held programs for widows and widowers, separated and divorced individuals, grandparents looking for ideas on how to pass on the faith to their children and grandchildren; a weekend retreat for veterans with post traumatic stress disorder; an evening program for families who have family members and friends who have come out as homosexual; a special triduum to Saint Joseph, our patron, and an All Souls Novena. A Holy Week At Home retreat provided retreatants with daily emails to refl ect upon and pray with during Holy Week. What an array of programs for all of us.

The Spiritual Programs Committee developed a series of teas for women. Their program was successful with 80 women attending the fi rst event and 185 attending the second. There are additional programs scheduled in 2015. The Young Adults Group continues to attract individuals in the 20 and 30 year old range for discussion, prayer and fellowship.

Thanks to your support, we were able to surpass our fundraising goal by $60,000 dollars. These funds enabled us to continue our support of the Men and Women in Transition retreats as well as the retreat for veterans with post traumatic stress disorder, retreats for the unemployed and for the 51st year The Our Lady of Confi dence retreat for persons with mental and emotional disabilities.

The annual audit indicates that we are continually strong in managing our funds and providing internal controls and accountability for the ministry. This enabled us to refi nance our debt and receive a favorable and lower rate of interest, saving us $65,000 annually.

Our Men and Women of Malvern groups totaled 7,855 for 2014. These members represented thirty three (33) states. We increased our new retreatants to 850, an increase of 8%. That is a signifi cant number and will help us strengthen our membership if we work hard to retain those new members. We delivered twenty-eight (28) parish pulpit talks and spoke to nineteen (19) additional parish groups as a follow up to our Sunday talks. We added eight (8) Matt Talbot groups, men’s recovery groups, to bring us to about 1500 retreatants from these recovery groups. Additionally, there were 236 retreat groups that came to Malvern outside of the Men and Women of Malvern groups.

On top of all of these programs, the Hospitality Associates served over 105,000 meals and prepared rooms for 16,000 overnight guests as well as coordinated the set up for our many day/evening programs.

Your leadership, our Board, Associates, CA Captains and Recruiters are working to strengthen this legacy. Please strengthen your resolve to increase our retreatants in the men and women programs and support us fi nancially as best you can. With this annual report, we thank all of our donors and benefactors for their generosity. We are truly blessed by your support and look forward to strengthening our fi nances and retreatants.

Prosit!

REC

TOR When we hear the word, Mission,

we are inclined to think of a military operation. However, the words Mission & Vision are being used more and more today to help corporations and associations, even Malvern Retreat House to clarify its goals and concentrate its energy in accomplishing a specifi c purpose.

In a biblical and spiritual context, the term Mission has signifi cant meaning. The Bible provides many examples in which God commissions angels and men to speak and act on His behalf. God sends these special emissaries to carry out His plan for advancing His kingdom on earth. In the Old Testament the foremost example of one commissioned by God was Moses. His mission was to be the agent of freedom for God’s People. From a New Testament perspective we are familiar with the term Apostle which fi nds its origin in the Greek word meaning, the one sent. Peter and Paul are the foremost Apostlessent on the mission to bring the Gospel to Jew and Gentile alike – in fact the whole world.

Malvern Retreat House is never mentioned in the Bible as having a specifi c Divine Mission, but our one hundred year plus history speaks to the fact that God has blessed Malvern and has provided the means for our Mission to be carried forth into a second century! Malvern’s Mission is specifi c and bold:

Malvern Retreat House provides a sacred place where men and women of all ages come to deepen their personal relationship with Jesus Christ through the retreat experience.

Rooted in the Sacraments of Baptism and Confi rmation, and strengthened weekly with the Holy Eucharist, Malvern men and women are missionaries sent out by God to bring the Gospel to all people: practicing Catholics, inactive Catholics, un-churched individuals, Christian and non-Christian alike.

We invite, encourage and welcome all to spend time away in refl ection and prayer on these holy grounds. We fi rmly believe that when a person opens oneself to the presence of God desiring a Divine Encounter, God will not disappoint! Through the power of Christ crucifi ed, we believe that no one is beyond the love of God and His life-giving mercy! Malvern makes room for all who desire to encounter God because we know that God desires to encounter all.

With deep conviction in the power and love of God, Malvern boldly advances forward into this New Millennium guided by its clear Vision:

Malvern Retreat House seeks to be the premier provider of and venue for religious and spiritual retreat programs. Rooted in the Roman Catholic faith, we envision a community that welcomes all to the retreat experience in order to refresh their faith and refl ect upon a deeper, more personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Quieted in mind and body and renewed in spirit, retreatants return to their families, parishes and workplaces refreshed and energized to be disciples of Jesus Christ.

Please pray daily the above prayer that God will continue to guide our Mission and will continue to enlighten us with a clear Vision!

Rev. Msgr. Joseph T. MarinoRector, Malvern Retreat House

God, our Father, I pray that through the Holy Spirit I might hear the call of the New Evangelization to deepen my faith, grow in confi dence to proclaim the Gospel, and boldly witness to the saving grace of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. (United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, 2013)

Page 6: Malvern-Annual Report-2014

THANK YOU FOR MAKING NEW PROGRAMS POSSIBLEWith your support, we were able to launch several new programs in 2014 to address the changing needs of our retreatants. Rector Monsignor Joseph Marino says the effort has allowed Malvern Retreat House to reach out to people in different stages of their lives.

“We try to consider all the various dimensions of the community to give as many people possible time for refl ection and prayer -- time for divine encounters,” Msgr. Marino said.

Newly developed programs include a veteran’s retreat weekend, refl ection days to help individuals with end of life issues, a new Women’s Sunday Tea and a Catholic Singles Retreat:

➤ Veterans Retreat WeekendThe Veterans Retreat Program is Malvern Retreat House’s fi rst public program for veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. The effort was launched in November 2014 with 18 retreatants, who received religious counsel designed for them. Monsignor Marino says the participants are called “Centurions for Christ” to mark their spiritual journey to recover from their wounds and move forward in faith.

NEW PROGRAMS

➤ Young Adult Advent RetreatA new Advent Evening of Refl ection was added in December for our Young Adults program. These types of retreats are now being held quarterly for men and women in their 20’s and 30’s who are looking for time for refl ection and camaraderie with fellow retreatants in their age group.

➤ End of Life ProgramsSeveral programs were launched in 2014 to help retreatants manage end of life issues and honor those who have passed.• A new Day of Refl ection called End of Life Concerns was

started to give retreatants a Catholic perspective on making end of life decisions. The program is run by Steve Bozza of the Archdiocese Offi ce for Life and Family and seeks to assist families in making life affi rming choices, such as decisions on hospice care for a loved one.

• A refl ection day for recent Widows and Widowers was a great success in providing comfort for retreatants missing their loved ones. The success led to the creation of two different refl ection day groups, one for those who recently lost their spouse and one for widows and widowers who have had a longer period of time to grieve.

• A new All Souls Day Novena, Triduum and Mass was held to honor all the faithfully departed and their families.

KeepingFaith

God didn’t promise days without pain, laughter without sorrow, or sun without rain, but He did promise strength for the day, comfort for the tears, and light for the way. If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it. - unknownthe

➤ Women in Transition2014 also marked the launch of the new Women in Transition retreat. It provides retreat opportunities for formerly homeless women who are transitioning back to the community. The retreat theme, “Knock, Knock! Who’s There? Naming, Claiming, and Proclaiming,” symbolized the opportunity for female retreatants to acknowledge what needs healing in their lives and how to become their best selves with God’s healing love. This retreat last May included 53 women and was provided at no cost through the generosity of the Malvern Retreat House Golf Classic, which raises funds each year for Malvern Cares.

“One person did thank me for ‘giving me my Jesus back,’” said Sr. Jane Nesmith, one of the retreat leaders. “What a blessing!”

➤ Sunday Women’s TeaOne of the more successful quarterly events launched in 2014 was the Sunday Women’s Tea. In November the first afternoon of the program, called Feminine Heart: Whole & Holy, featured speaker Dr. Patricia Kelly speaking about Women As Healer of the Heart. More than 80 women attended the event and enjoyed tea and spiritual discussion.

This program is directed by Jacki Delaney, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors and head of the Spiritual Progress Development Committee. Future Teas are scheduled for each quarter in 2015 and beyond.

➤ Catholic Singles RetreatSingle men and women of all ages enjoyed Malvern’s inaugural Catholic Singles Retreat last June. Led by Fr. Steve DeLacy, Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and Bryan Mercier, a contributor with CatholicMatch Institute, this retreat included inspiring conferences, faith-sharing discussions, Mass, Holy Hour, Eucharistic Adoration and social activities.

Participants enjoyed some light hearted moments (pictured right), along with deeper moments of reflection and sharing.

MORE THAN 20,000 RETREATANTS REFLECT ON THEIR FAITH IN 2014Malvern Retreat House surpassed a significant mark in 2014 when the number of retreatants served soared beyond the 20,000 mark. A total of 20,661 retreatants had opportunities to deepen their faith on the Malvern campus. Our kitchen staff was busy as evidenced by the number of meals served during the year:

Cinder blocks are lined up for use outside St. Joseph’s Hall in December, 2014.

Long awaited updates to one of most historic

and beloved buildings on the Malvern Retreat House campus got underway in 2014. The planned improvements of St. Joseph include installing an elevator and air conditioning, as well as a major makeover of the interior of this historic building.

The project will also include the eventual inclusion of conference facilit ies to make the building more self contained, allowing retreatants to stay indoors more during inclement weather.

The electrical expansion and the new elevator are projected to be completed in May 2015. The planned interior makeover, including air conditioning, will then begin immediately afterwards and is expected to be completed before the end of 2016.

Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies. - Mother Teresa

ROBERT REPKO MAN OF MALVERNBob Repko says when he got to the gate of Malvern Retreat House for the fi rst time everything inside of him was screaming for him to go home. At the time, he was in the process of converting to the Catholic faith through RCIA after being raised in a religion where God was considered punitive and judicial.

“I was very unsure about what was going to happen while I was on retreat,” Repko said. “Then a sense of peace came over me.”

Repko says the weekend retreat became a “catapult shot” for him in his faith formation. He says he learned so much, and his relationship with God was deepened. One of his “aha” moments came when Father Gregory Hickey introduced Repko to the concept of a God of mercy. During a question and answer session, Father Hickey responded to a question about God’s forgiveness.

“When he was answering the other person’s question, he looked right at me and said ‘it’s okay; God loves you,’” Repko said. “It was like God was speaking through him to me. It was a game changer.”

Repko says to this day that moment chokes him up since it so deeply changed his outlook.

“That retreat truly became 40 of the best hours of my life,” Repko said.

After his fi rst weekend, he became a regular retreatant with the Ss. Peter and Paul Men of Malvern group. Now he has been attending retreats for fi ve years.

“As soon as I get home from retreat, I put the next year’s retreat on my calendar,” Repko said. “I love Malvern and every year it is the best time I give to myself.”

MAGGIE DILOLLEWOMAN OF MALVERN

Maggie DiLolle says she jumped at the opportunity to attend retreats at Malvern Retreat House when events were added for women many years ago. She remembered as a child visiting St. Joseph in the Hills with her father Joseph Alfred DiLolle, who attended retreats for more than 50 years. When her turn came 27 years ago, she says she still recalls what she felt attending her fi rst retreat at Malvern.

“I remember seeing the beautiful grounds and feeling the tranquility in my heart,” DiLolle said. “I knew it was a sacred place—a very holy place to be.”

Eventually DiLolle became a retreat captain for Our Lady’s group, and she says she deepened her personal relationship with God. She also said over time she found that some of her more meaningful moments came from the little things that happen each day at the retreat house.

“I saw a woman once who was having a really hard time.” DiLolle said. “I asked her if she was okay, and our group walked with her to the oratory. She was shaking and said ‘I never felt this way.’ She was overpowered and started to cry a little. We all watched her and kneeled together. It is wonderful to see God moving through people.”

Over the years, these moments helped make DiLolle’s fellow retreatants become like sisters to her. They consoled each other when one of their fellow retreatants passed away and supported DiLolle when she lost her father.

“You will always fi nd someone else here going through the same thing,” DiLolle said. “You are never truly alone.”

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT I cannot overemphasize the important role that you and all of our members play in the continuing success of Malvern Retreat House. In simple terms, there is no Malvern Retreat House without the prayers and fi nancial support of the Men and Women of Malvern. We cannot help people move closer to Christ; to experience moments of divine encounter without your help. I thank you for your love and commitment to your beloved retreat house.

RECTOR

MALVERN THEME - YEAR TWO (We Believe, and Therefore We Speak (2 Corinthians 4:13) – Refresh in Worship) of the Three Year Plan of themes for retreats at Malvern in support of the New Evangelization has begun. The emphasis this year is on the significance of the Initiation Sacraments of Baptism, Penance, Confirmation & Eucharist. Retreat Directors will assist retreatants to better understand that the emphasis of the Word of God in a disciple’s life (Year One) is complemented by the Sacramental Life of the Church. Like the celebration of the Eucharist (Word & Sacrament), the disciple lives in Christ by being rooted in the Word and Sacraments of God, and in turn is made capable of witnessing to Christ (Evangelization).

ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER MEDALS AWARDEDAt the Annual Communion Breakfast, Malvern Retreat House awarded its Saint Joseph the Worker Medal to two Catholics whose lives continue to demonstrate outstanding Christian character: Pauline McShain and James Foley.

More than 250 people attended this event, honoring these two outstanding individuals. Pauline Mary McShain entered the Society of the Holy Child order in 1943. She taught in a number of Catholic schools in the US and West Africa before serving as Head of School of the newly opened School of the Holy Child. Sister Polly has lectured at the National Institute of Religious Education in Lagos, Nigeria, and served as Associate Vicar for Religious in Connecticut and New Jersey and was elected to the Society’s General Council in Rome. Today she lives quietly in Rosemont’s Holy Child Center.

Jim Foley is a past president of the Laymen’s Retreat League, as well as past president or director of thirty other organizations and institutions, including Melmark, The Liberty Bell Foundation, LaSalle High School, Villanova University, Boys Town of Italy, and Trinity International..

“Jim is as close to the indispensable man as we have in the Philadelphia Archdiocese,” Malvern Retreat House President Jim Fitzsimmons said. “He will lend his leadership skills to any organization or individual who is in need.”

RECRUITER HONOR ROLL

Malvern Retreat House ANNUAL REPORT 201426

Page 27: Malvern-Annual Report-2014

We have some blockbuster Retreats coming this Summer:

June 12-14 ➤ Dr. Ralph Martin: What Is The Holy Spirit Saying To You? For men and women of all ages. Ralph Martin has counseled popes, authored best-selling books, CD’s and DVD’s, hosted popular series on EWTN, sold out conference halls, and led the national charismatic movement. He will take you into the middle of the movement of the Holy Spirit in the church and world today.

July 10-12 ➤ Dr. Ray Guarendi: How Can We Raise Kids and Be Holy!? For men and women of all ages. Dr. Ray is a father of 10, a clinical psychologist, a best-selling author, the captain of an over 50 men’s baseball team, and arguably America’s most popular Catholic radio and TV host. He is certainly its funniest. He will lead a deep and prayerful exploratory into the most important calling lay people have been given.

July 17-19 ➤

Fr. Michael Gaitley: How and Why Mary Is Setting Hearts On Fire. For men and women of all ages. He’s been hailed as a phenomenon, a booster rocket, a meteor streaking across the night sky. Fr. Gaitley’s best -selling book 33 Days To Morning Glory is on the cusp of being the catalyst for the greatest movement of Marian Consecration in Church history. He is in demand all over the world as a conference speaker and retreat director. Last November he led almost 300 Knights of the Immaculate in what was widely regarded as a “transformational” retreat on our campus; now wives and daughters have demanded equal time.

Please prayerfully consider giving of your time, talent or treasure in the following ways:

➤ Annual Appeal: The Annual Appeal is the cornerstone of the Malvern Development Program. Revenues help support operational expenses including needed capital improvements.

➤ Capital Campaign: Malvern has a strategic plan centered on the upkeep and upgrades of St. Joseph’s, Our Lady’s, and Corrigan Halls. Gifts & Pledges of $1,000 receive a brick on Malvern’s Founders Walk.

➤ Memorial Gifts: If you would like to remember a loved one, a memorial gift to Malvern is a wonderful way to do so. Memorials may include room renovations, art items or contributions to the Malvern Memorial Fund. There also are two Tree of Life sculptures: Each leaf and boulder at the bottom of the tree may be engraved with the name of a loved one, a friend or retreatant, or someone you wish to honor.

➤ In Lieu of Flowers: Many members of our Malvern Family have asked that in honor of their passing, friends and family make contributions to the Malvern Retreat House instead of sending flowers.

➤ Bearers of Hope Scholarship Fund: Consider making a donation to help someone less fortunate receive the opportunity for spiritual renewal.

➤ Matching Gifts: The Malvern Retreat House is a non-profit charity, and as such, is eligible to receive matching gift funds. If your company has a matching gift program, please consider making a matching gift.

➤Remembering Malvern in Your Will: The Good Shepherd Club has been established to memorialize members and spouses who have included Malvern Retreat House in their will or estate plan.

➤ Gifts of Stock: Malvern Retreat House has set-up a brokerage account to accept gifts of stock. Donors can deduct the fully appreciated amount of the gift and avoid paying for capital gains by giving shares to Malvern Retreat House or any charitable organization. Malvern Retreat House receives the full value of the appreciated securities.

➤ Other Planned Gifts: There are many other ways to give planned gifts, including making Malvern a beneficiary on your insurance policy. For details, please call Michael Norton at 484-321-2539 or email him at [email protected].

➤ The Endowment Fund: The Endowment Fund provides revenue for the long-term financial health of the Malvern Retreat House. Besides providing financial stability for a “rainy day,” endowment income can also create an additional stream of revenue to help offset the increasing costs of retreats.

➤ Events: We have three development events during the year when we welcome your time, talent and contributions. They are: the annual art show and two golf outings—one in the spring and one in the fall. Consider taking part in these events.

➤ Volunteering: Malvern thrives on the contributions of our volunteers. Opportunities range from being a recruiter to joining one of our committees. Please call us at 610-644-0400 for more information.
