Malta Microfinance is a “not for profit company”. It is a financial institution (not a bank) licensed and regulated by the Malta Financial Services Authority which allows it to make advances to the poor.  It is based on the Grameen model made famous by the Nobel Peace Prize Winner Muhammad Yunus.

Malta Microfinance is wholly owned by St Andrew’s Scots Church, Valletta. The funding for Malta Microfinance has come from the World Communion of Reformed Churches, the Church of Scotland Guild project "Out of Africa..into Malta" and the Methodist Church of Great Britain.

business; To move out of an open centre/hostel into a flat;

To pay for a College course and get a

Our Target Group Migrants and

Interest RatesThe loan is interest free but we charge an arrangement fee of 12% on business and trade loans and 6% on rent loans. (APRs 27.18%, 23.83%, 26.75%)

We would like to give loans free of charge but

we have to pay an annual fee to Malta Financial Services Association.

Repayment periodThe loan is paid back over 6 to 12 months depending on the amount and purpose of the loan. Payments begin a month after moving into a flat, completing a course or starting a business.

How Much?

Up to €2,500 for the business loans; the deposit, first month’s rent and electric for the rent loans; the course fees for the trade loans.

Support Worker:Thanks to a grant from the South East District of the Methodist Church we employ a part time support worker Celine Warnier de Wailley to work alongside migrants and Maltese women, to give advice and organise loans, to help develop solidarity groups and oversee the loan repayments.

Malta Microfinance, the English Classes of St Andrew’s Church and the International Association for Refugees inaugurated their new offices, located in the old crypt of the Church at 212 Old Bakery Street, Valletta, on the 27th July 2014 with Her Excellency the President of Malta, Mrs Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca.
