Malmö was founded during the rst half of the 1300th century and has been under Danish crown. Malmö becameSwedish in 1658 but it took almost 200 years before theintegration bore fruit.
As an industrial city, Malmö ourished right up until the shipbuilding industry declined in the early 1970's – withemigration and failing self-condence as a consequence. But in recent years, Malmö has lifted itself again – andwith a vengeance. In June 2000, the Öresund Bridgereconnected the city with Denmark. The following year, theHousing Exhibition nally opened the city up to thewaterfront and Europe’s tallest – and perhaps mostspectacular – apartment block was built. Turning Torsorises up in the old shipyard district and attracts largenumbers of fascinated spectators. In the surroundingdistrict, the University and knowledge-intensive companiesare competing for the palatial new oces.
The city has been rejuvenated and revitalized, while immigration is continually breaking new records. There arefoundations for the newly-won optimism of Malmö’sresidents. Copenhagen is needed less and less. But, just incase you want to go there, "the village" is still there –closer than ever - with three train departures per hour.
