WACTE President’s Page

In February, we celebrated the 100th

anniversary of the Smith-Hughes Act! “One hundred years ago the 64th Congress and President Woodrow Wilson laid the foundation for today’s CTE by making the nation’s first federal investment in secondary education that prepares students for career success. Today, the 115th Congress has the opportunity to continue this legacy by making investing in CTE a top priority.” - Jarrod Nagurka, ACTE

“Be Somebody: Cowboy Ethics”

NASA Space Grant

The University of Wyoming at Casper Technical Education students constructed an interactive lunar display for the Wyoming NASA space grant. The display is now housed at the Science Zone in downtown Casper. The students worked in conjunction with Dr. Andrew Young, Casper College science teacher, and Leah Ritz, Science Zone director. Many times with student projects, one student gets more involved in the project than the rest of the team. This project was one of those projects where the student, Melissa Heck, was very involved throughout the design, fabrication and completion of the project. In the pictures with the display, see Melissa Heck in Casper College’s Design Studio prior to delivery of the display and also with Leah Ritz in the display’s new home at the Science Zone.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Wyoming’s ‘Be Somebody: Cowboy Ethics’ program has partnered with the Natrona County School District’s Financial Literacy classes as well as with the Better Business Bureau of Northern Colorado and Wyoming to offer a course where students can earn a Character Ethics Certification. Through a variety of ‘Be Somebody: Cowboy Ethics’ lessons, activities, and discussions, students take the Ten Principles in the Code of the West and begin to understand how it applies to their daily lives. This school year, more than 250 juniors and seniors at Kelly Walsh High School have enrolled in financial literacy classes to meet the district’s graduation requirement for financial literacy and civic responsibility. To help meet the civic responsibility portion of the requirement, students partake in ‘Be Somebody: Cowboy Ethics’ lessons, complete a portfolio, and then present a final project on what the Code of the West has taught them. Students also go through a set of video modules from the BBB’s Center for Character Ethics where scenarios are played out and ethical decisions must be made. Based on the decision made by the students utilizing their knowledge of the Ten Principles of the Code of the West, another randomized scenario plays out. Excellent discussion and short assignments, which are included in their portfolio, accompany these video modules. Once students have completed all portions of the program, they then earn a Character Ethics Certification. This year marks the beginning of the fifth year of partnership with business classes in Natrona County School District and our second year of offering the Character Ethics Certification course. The goal for this partnership has always been for students to decide for themselves what they believe, why they believe it, and how they are going to show it. As evident in these two examples of final projects, students are taking the Ten Principles of the Code of the West and making it their own, living out their own code, and becoming role models in our community.

How To Set Your School on F.I.R.E.!

Buddy Berry will take us through his journey in reimagining Eminence Independent Schools to design a next generation “Dream School” rooted in personalized learning, and centered around innovation and creativity. The Eminence Independent school district has redesigned its instructional experience for kindergarten through 12th-grade students with its Framework of Innovation for Reinventing Education model using online, blended and competency-based education in their quest to be the Disney World of Schools. Eminence has utilized technology as the main driver for their success combined with Yes, And thinking; Surprise and Delight; and starting to Think Differently about solutions.

Buddy Berry has a passion for reinventing the K-12 school experience. His School on FIRE (Framework of Innovation for Reinventing Education) model is currently in it's fourth full year of implementation and is seeing dramatic results. It is grounded on a model of mastery learning with systemic ICE (Interventions, Connections, and Enrichments). The School on FIRE begins with a mindset of Surprise and Delight, Next Generation skills, and utilizes student agency to provide lessons and learning that captures every child's heart and imagination. Dr. Berry is in his 7th year as Superintendent of Eminence Independent Schools and developed the School on F.I.R.E. (Framework of Innovation for Reinventing Education) Model based on the CCSSO's six core principals of innovation.
