Principles for visual presentation of data and findings
Avoiding “chartjunk” and “slideuments”
I was getting really tired of terrible, boring presentations, both seeing them and giving them… there must be a better way…..
How is it that some people are able to rivet us with their presentation skills? There had to be an answer.
D
So I went to see what the masters of the verbal-visual presentation form did, and boy, was it eye-opening! Duarte Design, Mountain View California…
Am I really going to do all of that???
It turned out, unbeknownst to me, or anyone else I knew, that there was a whole world of theory practice behind making really professional presentations, that would actually grab an audience and communicate effectively.
Of course the rub was, this would take effort and time, every time I designed a presentation from now on.
Yep! And if I was going to do a presentation to tell other people about this,,,, I’d better “walk the talk”. And I’m glad I did…..
Consciously working to understand your audience, thinking through the contour of the narrative, story-boarding the visuals is a lot of work but also rewarding and great fun
Know your audience….
Brainstorm…. Get all of the ideas out there
Keep the best ideas and give them structure
Link story and visuals - storyboards
Plot your story like a movie
Add humor and memorable moments
A creative process ….
Hard but worth it
Worth it.. BIG TIME
Now it’s your turn…
