Each time I attend a Foundation grant lunch, I am struck by the passion and perseverance of the people in the room – not only of the nonprofit leaders who are making a difference in our community, but of the citizens who have made the commitment to invest in that work.
This passion and perseverance is the reason that Williamsburg Community Foundation exists. WCF is here to connect people who care with causes that matter, and thanks to you, WCF is able to connect more people to more causes, more effectively, each year. I hope you will enjoy learning about some of these people in the pages that follow.
You have responded wholeheartedly to the VISION 2020 initiative, now entering its third year. As a result, I am pleased to report that the VISION 2020 area funds will begin to produce grants in the fall of 2018.
The Foundation received the largest bequest in its 18-year history from the late Jenny E. Wible. Her legacy will provide enormous support to the organizations she designated.
The confidence she placed in the Foundation is a testament to its ability to carefully steward those resources in order to benefit our community for years to come.
As my tenure as the board chair comes to a close, my sincerest thanks go to you, as well as our volunteer board and committee members, for your continued support of this community. I am confident that our new chair, Ron Lodzieski, will lead the Foundation wisely over the next two years, culminating in the celebration of the Foundation’s 20th anniversary. There is much to celebrate and we hope you will join us as we continue to improve the quality of life for area residents.

Corinne Garland believes that families of children with exceptional needs require exceptional resources. With help from a WCF grant, One Child Center for Autism offers Kids’ Night to give families relief from the responsibility of childcare, while also giving kids with special needs, and their siblings, a fun evening together.
“Choosing to support the Community Foundation’s Fund for Children and Young Adults is an easy decision for my husband and me. We know that our gift will have a far greater impact when joined with those of others. This allows us to make an important investment, not only in the lives of children and their families, but in the future of our community.”

As the owner of an interior design firm, Jim Mundy has been in the business of making the world a more beautiful place for forty years.
Yet he has a vision for something more. “We live in a world that is so often devoid of beauty. So it’s utterly fantastic that groups like the Community Foundation are making more arts funding available in Williamsburg,” Jim says. “By contributing to the Arts and Culture Fund at the Foundation, I know that my little bit goes so much further, because it’s combined with other donations to make a stronger impact.”
Jim describes himself as a big-picture person who is grateful to the Foundation for translating his vision of a more beautiful world into a reality. Thanks to Jim’s contribution and many others, the Foundation is able to fund organizations such as the Armed Services Arts Partnership, a nonprofit that helps veterans, service members and military families reintegrate into their communities through the arts.

“For me, in order to have a prosperous community, you have to have a healthy community. It’s the foundation,” says Barbara Watkinson.
She and her husband Hans von Baeyer give to the Foundation’s Health & Community Wellness Fund because it allows them to support a variety of organizations that promote health, such as Angels of Mercy Medical Clinic, which now serves the area’s homeless thanks to a grant from Williamsburg Community Foundation.
Retired from William & Mary, Barbara and Hans have been actively involved in Williamsburg for over 40 years, serving on the school board, advocating for subsidized housing and volunteering. By partnering with WCF, they can continue to have that connection to the community they call home.
HEALTH & COMMUNITY WELLNESS
Improving Quality of Life
Bill and Liz Wilhelm just celebrated a major milestone: 54 years of marriage. Over the years, they cared for their mothers, as well as aging aunts and uncles, because there were not as many organizations to help seniors live independently.
By giving to the Senior Services Fund, the Wilhelms are investing in vital programs like Senior Champions to ensure that seniors can be an active part of the community. A program of the Senior Living Foundation, Senior Champions provides adult day services at no cost, giving family caregivers much needed respite.
“This is why we give to the Senior Services Fund. We want to help organizations to be more responsive to the needs of the many seniors in greater Williamsburg, and we find that giving through the Williamsburg Community Foundation is a wonderful way to help.”

Mary Jo Headley is a master naturalist and Doug Headley is an avid rower on the Chickahominy, so it made sense for them to focus their charitable giving through the Environment and Conservation Fund at the Community Foundation.
Both Doug and Mary Jo feel strongly about caring for natural resources.
“We support conservation efforts on a more global scale, but working with Williamsburg Community Foundation was a way that we could bring it a little closer to home,” says Doug. “It allows us to make an impact locally on issues that have been important to us for a long time.”
Doug and Mary Jo look forward to seeing the Environment and Conservation Fund grow and produce more grants in the future to organizations such as the Girl Scouts of the Colonial Coast, which received a grant in 2017 to renovate Camp Skimino.

Sustaining our Natural Resources
When Jim Joseph talks about his late wife Marjorie, you can hear the pride in his voice. “She loved this community, and she wanted to help this community. So when my daughter Lynn suggested creating a memorial scholarship in her mother’s name, it just fit.”
Born and raised in the small college town of Potsdam, New York, Marjorie fell in love with another small college town further south when they moved to Williamsburg in 1996. They set down new roots here. With a yearly scholarship in Marjorie’s name, those roots will continue to grow. “The scholarship committee made it so easy to do what we wanted to do: to carry on her legacy. God willing, we will do it every year.”
The first Marjorie Joseph Scholarship went to a student from Lafayette High School in 2017. The youngest of four children, and the child of two public school teachers, he is now studying engineering at Virginia Tech. Marjorie Joseph would be proud.

If you had visited a Colonial Williamsburg dining room in the 1970s, you may never have suspected that the woman behind the cash register would one day leave a $3.4 million gift to the community.
Throughout her life, Jenny Erna Wible worked hard, cared deeply for her family, her pets, her flowers and her faith. “Jenny never spent any money on herself,” remembers longtime friend Sherry Monk. “Whenever someone was in need, she would give what she had.” Her choice to leave a bequest to the Williamsburg Community Foundation is an extension of a life lived in service to others.
With the help of her attorney and financial advisor, Jenny created a bequest that would benefit three organizations in perpetuity. In 2017, Jenny’s gift allowed eight students to afford a Walsingham Academy education. At St. Bede Catholic Church, Jenny’s gift made it possible for more children, youth and adults to participate in faith formation. At Salvation Army, Jenny’s gift means more of our neighbors can lift themselves out of poverty with the help of transitional housing and emergency assistance.
Jenny had confidence that, long after her lifetime, the community foundation would continue to care for her gift, invest it wisely and ensure that yearly grants would have the greatest possible impact.
LEAVING A LEGACY
The Jenny E. Wible FundThe Williamsburg Community Foundation is one of a number of organizations upon which Mary Humelsine left her mark. A group of community leaders asked Mary to co-chair a committee to plan a
grand gala to commemorate Williamsburg’s 300th anniversary in 1999. The “First Lady of Williamsburg” accepted her role with all of the enthusiasm for which she was known. Each detail was managed with precision—the program, the venue, the thoughtfully constructed menu and, appropriately for Mary, the wine selection. The extraordinary success of the event provided a meaningful and deserving launch for what is now the Williamsburg Community Foundation.
Mary served two terms on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, lending her influence and providing guidance to the young organization. She was proud of her role with the WCF. Her legacy, in the form of the Mary Speake Humelsine Fund in the Community endowment, will remain in perpetuity as a constant reminder of the tremendous contributions that she made to the greater Williamsburg community.
If you would like to learn more about leaving a legacy, please contact Williamsburg Community Foundation at 757-259-1660.
