Farewell Jim Hayes (article online at www.canberratimes.com)
Jimmy Hayes probably wouldn’t have wanted anyone to
make a fuss but the Canberra football community paid
tribute to a pioneer of the game in the ACT.
Hayes died recently in
hospital, aged 80. He was a
player and coach in some of
the very first ACT clubs but his
biggest role came in setting up junior clubs in the ACT.
Hayes helped form the Majura Soccer Club where the club
house in Dickson is now named the Jimmy Hayes pavilion.
Yesterday club president Rhonda Parkin said Hayes was
just always there to help out.
“He always used to say, ‘I don’t want anyone making a
fuss’, all he did wasn’t for his benefit, he was just there for the love of the children and the game,” she said.
“He was just always around to help out.”
Hayes’s foremost love was helping juniors with the game. Hayes set up the first junior team in Canberra.
Terry Hayes said his father spread football’s message
widely.
“He was a janitor at Hughes primary and he just started
bringing a ball for the kids to play with at lunch and those
numbers just grew and grew and then they started
entering teams in the local competitions,” Terry Hayes
said.
“He wanted to see junior football improve, he liked seeing
kids enjoying the game.” Chris Conti – who managed the
ACTAS program while Hayes was director of coaching –
said Hayes inspired many young players to a life-time
involvement in football.
“He was a terrific man and a real inspiration,” Conti said.
He is survived by sons Alan, Pat, Danny and Terry and 10 grandchildren as well as six great grand children.

REF’S WHISTLE
Louise Burgess impressed by The Koalas U10.
Hi there my name is Louise Burgess and I am a new
referee at Majura this year. I have had so much fun so
far! I have been refereeing under 8, 9 and 10s.
I was very nervous at the start. Mick Eddleston is a
wonderful resource for the club, thank you Mick!
Anyway I am emailing you because I was very impressed
with a team on Saturday. The Koalas U10 Open.
What fantastic team spirit, with fantastic encouragement
and guidance from their Coach and Parents on the
sideline.
Yes, they did lose their game: but they played with
enthusiasm and good sportsmanship for the whole game.
At one stage I heard one player say, “this team is just too
good for us”. How can a 9 year old show so much wisdom,
smile and keep on trying!
Well Done Koalas
Former Majura Players Overseas;
Elle Weston is now playing her football in Dubai. See the
interview in “The Offsider,” at www.capitalfootball.com.au
Kofi Danning is in Europe with the Australian Under 20
side playing against the likes of Ajax, Celtic and
Feyenoord.

Meet the Coach:
Margaret (4 games to date.)
Margaret is Coach of Under 10 girls team, The Tsunamis.
“I’ve never coached before but I saw we needed a Coach
and I thought why not?
“I’d played in games with kids and adults before so had a
bit of an idea of the rules and the point of the game. My
mate Eamonn was a great help showing me a few drills to
get started.
“I then went along to the Coerver Coaching Clinic offered
at Majura recently. I was the only woman there, which I
was surprised at. I didn’t realize coaching was so
boysey (where are you gals?). Anyway the clinic was
fantastic, and I came away inspired.
Tsunami Under 10 Isabella
on the ball and Otillya in
support.
“Without wanting to sound like an ad, I learnt a lot of great drills
and learnt that the most important thing for kids is confidence
with ball skills.
“So that’s a big part of what the girls and I work on at training. I
try to instill in the girls that the game is about having fun and
giving it a go.
“They all get so excited when they score a goal so I really
try to emphasise how great that is, and take the focus off
winning.
“I’ve had a vote of confidence from my daughter with the
training drills so I must be going okay.
“I’d encourage anyone to get involved. The skills you bring from
Netball, Rugby or other sports are very similar and the kids just
need lots of practice and encouragement. And a coaching clinic
or two and you’re on your way.”

Take the June Majura Challenge:
The sidefoot or instep pass. (Left and Right)
This is the most important basic skill in football. It’s used
for over 90% of passes and goal scoring. Can you do it?
Majura Challenge: For ANY players, ANY age.
How many passes can you or your team mate/
brother/sister mum/dad or your teacher do? Simply pass
with the inside of your left and right foot...back and forth
across a distance of 4-10 metres without having to move
from your position or stopping the ball?
At this stage of the season improving this skill is crucial.
Skill too easy? Increase the pace, shorten or lengthen
the distance?
Still too easy? The Socceroos and Matildas need you now!

Who said this?
“We’re seeing a real difference in the girls game. We’re starting to see
the influence Futsal (Indoor Football) is having on our young players, and
we’re also noticing an improvement in the athletic ability of the players
we are getting.”
