Objective of Brain Gate !!!!
To develop a fast and reliable connectionbetween brain of a disabled person and a personal
computer .

5/23
Basic Process
The electrode
translates brain activity
and sends theinformation to the
computer in a format it
can understand.

How it Works
BrainGate uses a sensor that is implanted
onto the motor cortex of the brain. The
device analyzes brain signals then interprets
and translated them into cursor movements.

Types of Brain Computer Interface(BCI):
One way BCI
Computers either accept commands from the brain
or send signals to it
Two way BCI
Allow brains and external devices to exchangeinformation in both directions.

Brain Gate Research in animals:
At first, rats were
implanted with BCI .
Signals recorded from
the cerebral cortex of ratto operate BCI to carry
out the movement.After rats,
now on monkeys . . . .

It Worked!
Using only its mind the monkey was able to control acursor on a computer monitor via Brain Gate.

Since there were no
complications in trials with
monkeys
Next Step: Humans!

Now BCI tested on a human by an American company
Cyberkinetics.
First participant, a 25-year-old man Nagle having spinal cord
injury leading to paralysis in all four limbs.
Over a period of nine months, he got success.

BRAINGATE CHIP
Chip is implanted on the surface of the brain in the
motor cortex area, the area that controls movement

The Brain Gate sensor (Red arrow), resting on a US penny, connected by a cable to the Pedestal (Black arrow), which issecured to the skull. Neural signals are recorded while the
pedestal is connected to the remainder of the Brain Gatesystem

Matthew Nagle
Using the Brain Gate system, Matt couldcontrol a cursor on a computer screen
Control TV Check e-mail
Draw on screen
He could also send commands to an external
prosthetic hand

Nagles statement-
I can't put it into words. It's justI use my
brain. I just thought it. I said, "Cursor go up to
the top right." And it did, and now I can control
it all over the screen. It will give me a sense of
independence.

Challenges faced by Brain Gate
Very expensive.
Limitation in information transform rate. The latest
technology is 20 bits/min.
Difficulty in adaptation and learning.

19/23
Future aspects-
In the next few years, Cyberkinetics
hopes to refine the chip to develop a
wireless version
No need for a plug
Safer
Less visible

CURRENT APPLICATIONS:
Navigate Internet
Play Computer Games
Turn Lights On and Off
Control Television

FUTURE APPLICATIONS:
Regulating Breathing
Controlling BodyFunctions

CONCLUSION
Using Brain Gate, the patient can read e-mail, playvideo games, turn lights on or off , change channels
or adjust the volume of a television set.
Brain Gate can help paralyzed people move bycontrolling their own electric wheelchairs,
communicate by using e-mail and Internet-based
phone systems, and be independent by controlling
items such as televisions and thermostats. Finally BRAIN GATE has proved to be a boon for
paralyzed patient.
