Poland falls within weeks of the invasion.June 22nd 1941- Germany invaded Russia known as Operation Barbarossa. 4.5 million Germans invaded Russia along the eastern front.July 1st 1942- the Battle of El Alamein was fought in Egypt between Great Britain, Germany, and Italy. This is also known as the first battle.August 21st 1942- the Battle of Stalingrad was the turning point in the east when Russia defeated the German advance.June 6th 1944- D-Day invasion of Normandy France by the United States, Great Britain, and Canadian Forces. Also know as Operation Overlord was the largest amphibious landing ever.December 16th 1944- the Battle of the Bulge was a major German offensive against the allies. Charles Sweeney -- Emperor Hirohito and Japanese Prime Minister Suzuki then decide to seek an immediate peace with the AlliesSeptember 2, 1945- Formal Japanese surrender ceremony on board the MISSOURI in Tokyo Bay as 1,000 carrier-based planes fly overhead; President Truman declares VJ Day
