THE

Message from the Commodore❱ ❱ ❱

To say the couple of months have exceeded expectations for rainfall is an under-statement. Our club members have kept the faith believing the drought would not continue, our reward may come sooner than many may have expected or thought possible. I believe I must now take the opportunity to briefly get involved in the discussion of water usage.

The future water needs for the area is a serious issue to be discussed and is one that is perhaps long overdue. Some of the ideas for obtaining water I have been reading about, such as pumping additional water from Cheney into the aquifer, could have an impact on the lakes water level it is even more important that the membership become engaged in these discussions so that our perspective on this valuable resource is understood. Many may be aware the prolonged drought has taken a heavy toll on the recreational and quality of life aspect of the lake with park attendance and usage down to a level I would call extreme.

It should not come as a surprise it has had a severe financial impact not only on the park and those of us at the lake, but I believe, into the surrounding area and communities. Even if the water returns to a level where the lake can once again be accessed it is going to take several years to recover from the financial and physical damage caused by the drought.

The questions that keep coming to my mind is what if the drought had lasted for another year and what happens if these periods of severe drought become the new normal? The solutions are not easy but I believe there are options to be evaluated and our membership has a unique and important perspective that needs to be considered and added to the discussion.

See you on the water.

Summer Sailtice WebsiteNSA participated in the celebration of the Summer Sailstice,

on June 23rd. Summer Sailstice was founded in February 2001 by John Arndt, as the annual global celebration of sailing held on the weekend closest to the summer solstice.

John wrote an article about NSA’s participation in the sailstice entitled, “KS - Sailors Stick Together Through Thick”. If you would like to read the article, you can find it at www.summer-sailstice.com/article/ks-sailors-stick-together-through-thick-and-thin; or you can find the link by going to our website.

The annual Summer Sailstice sailing event is free to all partic-ipants and has grown from 200 boats in 2001 to almost 5,000 boats tin 2013. An estimated 19,000 sailors participated in the 2013 Summer Sailstice.

Thanks to everyone who participated. We have now been published nationally.

NSA RACING NEWS by Gary Cheatum, NSA Vice-Commodore

The Water is up and Boats are on the lakeFor those who haven’t taken notice recently, our lake is making

a very serious effort to become full. The lake has come up approx-imately 2 feet in the past 2 months so that (as of Sunday evening, August 4th) it is only 3.76 feet below conservation (normal) pool level. Anyone with a boat that has a draft of 4 feet or less should certainly put it in and enjoy some great sailing. The Board of Gov-ernors voted to extend the “free” crane use through the month of August and there are still plenty of “loaner” slips available on “A” & “B” docks so I don’t see anything keeping a lot of our members from getting their 2013 season sailing started right away.

KBRS - Wednesday Night RacingThe “KBRS” series races each Wednesday evening have been

being conducted with a group of Catalina 22 owners. They have been racing three short races each night and having a ball. If you wish to join them for some fun but very low stress racing get your boat in and show up on Wednesday prior to the 7:00 PM Start Time. If your boat rates anywhere near a Catalina 22 we will just continue with the non-handicapped “One Design” format.

Annual Ninnescah C.O.R.N. RegattaAdditionally, at this time the Annual Ninnescah C.O.R.N.

Regatta (Cheney One-design Regatta at Ninnescah) is definitely “ON”. It will be held as a one day event on Sunday, September 1st. We are expecting participants from Windycrest Sailing Club (Tulsa) and Oklahoma City Boat Club and we will organize a Fleet rating for any group of 4 boats of a type. Routinely we have fleets of Sunfish and Lasers, but we would like to see more (like the Catalina 22s, San Juan 21s, 470s, Hobies or Sweet Sixteens, etc.). If there is enough interest, we could accommo-

date a “fleet” of Junior sailors in Sunfish or Optis. If you have any questions regarding participation in this race just give me a call (316-617-1246).

Plans for a One-day Regatta At this time there is also planning afoot to have a

one-day Multiple race Regatta on August 17th, 2013. This will be an “Open” format Regatta – any boat, any type -comprising three or four races in the afternoon and completing in time for everyone to participate in the Annual Progressive Din-ner. Everyone with a boat in the water is welcome to participate and remember, this will also be aimed at maximizing the FUN Quotient. We will have Trophies and Prizes (plus the Progressive Dinner) so everyone should have a great time.

Hope to see you at the lake.

Attention: Non-certified Electrical Cords Must be Removed From the Docks

All members must remove all non-certified electrical cords from the docks by Friday, August 16, as mandated by state regulations. Electrical cords that

are on or under the slips and fingers that are not the yellow marine certified cords will be collected and removed from the docks. Keep our slip area safe.

That looks great Bob! Now your boat trailer can be easily identified.

tPlease remember to regularly check your

boats, trailers and tires, to keep yard spaces mowed, to remove used batteries, oil and other debris, and to protect other sailor’s belongings by locking the gates when you are the last one out.

The first week of each month from April to October, the yard will be inspected to deter-mine if mowing is needed. If the growth is heavy, thick or high enough to touch the frame of your trailer, it will be mowed for you and you will be billed.

We mow for fire hazard as well as appear-ance, so please do not use Roundup or other herbicides as they only kill the grass, create dry areas that burn easily.

Please consider the following:• Mowers are provided in the sheds in each

yard. Please check the oil in the mower before using.

• Be sure to move your trailer to mow and bring your weed eater from home.

• Keep your space clear of junk and debris that will damage the mowers.

• The only tie-downs allowed are those that are set in concrete. The twist in doggie style are mower killers, and do not hold in our Kansas storms.

• The yard spaces are for boats and trailers only.

• Lock the gate when yard you leave.• Take your used oil and batteries with you.

All trailers must be clearly marked with the member’s name. See Section 12 of “RULES AND FEES” for regulations that apply to the maintenance of yard spaces. For questions or problems, contact Rick Stump, Yardmaster, or Allen Johnson, Administrative Secretary.

What NSA Sailors Do When The Water Is Low

Ron Means, a feared and revered Hobie sailor has finally graduated to a monohull. He and Ivanna were camped out last week with their grandson, who attended the Jr. Sailing Camp #2.

Test #1 Preliminary Results:a. Design creates lift in bow, (or excess

weight may be present in stern).b. Need to add convenient furling system.c. Excellent performance off wind but

impedes progress up wind.d. Marketing suggests more color and a

younger skipper.e. Name, logo, and “catch phrase” still

to be determined - watch for updates.

Property Manager is bitterly disappointed with the swimming prohibition at the crane.

August Jr. Sailing Camp Reportby Jaime Kissinger

2013 was a great season for Jr. Sailing Camp.No boat is too small, what matters is—WE ARE ON THE WA-

TER SAILING! Light winds and lots of rain was the weather we had at Jr. Sailing Camp #2. Yahoo! Even with the low water conditions, we had 12 Jr. Sailors; Matt Boone, Evan Evans, Maddie Green, Am-ber Hempe, Brooke Hempe, Jenna McFall, Jayden Means, Amruss Medjkane, India Penner, Sophia Randle, Baxter Scarberry, and True Thornicroft. A huge thanks goes out to our coaches Brenyn Kissinger, Will Penner, Charlene Randle, Texie Randle, and Mathew Randle assistant coach, for their time and talent, teaching the fundamentals of sailing to this great group of young sailors.

The Prindle was a big hit at camp with the girls taking control of the boat (True, Maddie, Amber, with Will and Baxter) sailing it, capsizing it, and learning to bring it back up. It was said, when the Prindle tipped they were 20 feet up in the air! Thank you for the donation of the Prindle and a huge thanks to Mark Evans for fixing it!

As a first year sailor, Matt Boone stood out as a novice sailor. After learning the sailing fundamentals in camp, he was sailing like a pro. Great job Matt and to the coaches!

A Great Time on the Last Day of CampThe Jr. Sailors had a great time on the last day of camp. Mark Evans, dressed up as Mr. Pi-

rate, handing out bandanas, necklaces, water balloons to all of the sailors. Then sent them sail-ing across the lake to look for a buried treasure (a cooler containing ice cream). In addition, the sailors had to drink from a “bucket of blood” (a bucket filled with tomato juice and onions)…the sailors who would not drink from the “bucket of blood”, were banished to ‘A’ dock and had to eat lunch with a fork, all in good fun!

Wow, can you believe the last few days of rain. It’s certainly nothing like the typical blistering Kansas summers we’ve had the last two years. May 2011 was the beginning of two of the dri-est sailing seasons in NSA history. From January 1 to the end of August of 2011 the lake level went down 36.48 inches and was down from normal pool elevation by 37.44 inches. Unfortunately, It didn’t end there. From January 1 to the end of August 2012 the lake went down another 13.8 inches. We hit the record drought low on February 10, 2013 at 1413.62 or 95.76 inches below normal pool. On a positive note, we were able to reinforce the crane base and crane wall thanks to the quick action of our Board of Gover-nors.

We saw a slow and painful but steady increase in the lake level over the Spring months. Several Catalina 22’s and few other small boats were able to go in the water after the May rains. Others were wondering how much money a 30 foot sailboat could bring. And, to add to our sadness, several of our friends with big boats sold or moved away. We know nothing stays the same and time moves

on. Most of us were just reflective and hoping for the best. May and August were most kind to us. In May the lake water

came up 23.28 inches and as of this writing the first five days of August gave us 28.68 inches and it is still rising. The lake level is changing hourly but as of this writing we are down a mere 23.6 inches. You can see from the table above that we are very close to the High level of 2012 and may be above that mark when you are reading this. I suspect every NSA member is lovingly checking the NSA website to check the water depth. Sheryl and I opened one of our “special occasion wines” last night to celebrate.

Water depth at the crane is better than seven feet deep. It ap-pears that most, if not all, NSA boats can put in now. Wichita and surrounding area swimming pools and spas are already full so we don’t have that drain on the lake at this point. We are experiencing cooler than normal temperatures so consequently we are having less evaporation. Hmm, we may be able to enjoy several months of sailing this year. And who knows, it may continue to rain. It’s exciting to be a part of something so historic.

Board Member Reports:secretary: Bob Born

James sent the semi-annual inventory of the boats in the NSA yard spaces and slips to the Reno County appraiser’s office as mandated. Their office was surprised at the lower number of boat inventory.Yardmaster: Ricky Stump

No reportharbormaster: Doug Veith

• Doug asks that all members remove non-certified electrical cords from the docks as mandated by state regulations. ALL electrical cords that are on or under the slips and fingers that are not the big yellow marine certified cords will be collected and thrown away.

• During the June BOG meeting the board approved the crane fee be waived for anyone putting their boat in for the remain-der of July. The intent is to allow small boat owners, who normally use the ramp, an opportunity to get in the water.

After some discussion this evening, Doug made a motion that the board consider extending the waiver to anyone putting their boat in during the month of August. The motion passed 8/0. (Veith/Kramer)

• At this time there are sixteen boats in slips (five more than last month). If you’re on C, D or E slip and have a shallow draft boat you might consider giving the slip holders on A dock to get permission to use their slip.

Anyone wanting to take advantage of this will have to contact a member who has a crane key and is crane certified (Ray Keller has records of who is paid and certified on the crane.). operations officer: Norman Dodson

The 4th of July was a busy day for the Afterdeck. We had the Commodore Breakfast in the morning and the July 4th dinner in the evening. We had about 45 people attend the dinner and everyone had a great time and enjoyed some great BBQ. We came out slightly ahead on this event. We took in slightly more than we spent and I believe we had about $385.00 in expenses and $415.00 in income. There were two no-shows that we will invoice. Overall it was a great event. Our next activity is the Progressive Dinner which will be coordinated by Andy Woodward on August 17th and I’ll let him give details on that. Be aware this was scheduled for the 10th but changed to the 17th. Mark your calendars. We will be sending out a Rapid Hub hopefully tomorrow.

• Members interested in reserving the Shelter House, Afterdeck, or holding a special group activity should contact Jack Kramer at [email protected]

Vice commodore: Gary Cheatum.• High winds destroyed the bimini top aluminum structure and

material on the Committee boat. Gary is obtaining bids on replacement.

• After more months than anyone can remember, the Lund mo-tor is close to being rebuilt and put into service.

• CSSA sanctioned Jr. Championship Regatta on Saturday, August 10.

• There are thoughts of a one day, multi-design, Ninnescah members only Regatta on the August 17. Stay tuned for more info as this could be a really fun day.

• C.O.R.N. regatta is planned for the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.
