STADT VAIHINGEN AN DER ENZ 2013 17.–21. Mai
STADT
VA I H I N G E N
AN DER ENZ
201317.–21. Mai
After a devastating major fire in 1693, which also destroyed the city’s archives, the citizen tried to reestablish law and
order. Amongst others, they took note of »unknown kindhear-ted people« who donated 300 Gulden (old currency) for the»Mayenlauf« (May-running-event); »From the interest rate youshall give the schoolchildren paper, twines (»Nesteln«) and redribbons in the month of May«.
Furthermore, all citizens in earthly or sacred positions aswell as the constables (policing authorities), received wine as a gift on this day.
The oldest record of the May Festival can be found in anaccount book of the hospital, where you can read in the entryof May 25th, 1687, that »the children ran for paper«. Most impressive is the phrasing in the journal of the city’scourt, where it was decided on the 15th of April 1706, thateach year, the city shall »lead the children into May« if not prohibited by war or large migration.
The May Festival is the oldest earthly festival of Vaihingen. If not already celebrated earlier, it goes back to the order ofduke Eberhard III. of 1650. Only two years after the Peace ofWestphalia (series of treaties), which ended the devastating 30 year war, he ordered to celebrate a »Gratitude and PeaceFestival« in the entire dukedom. May Festivals can be traced inthe city of Lindau (only 1650), Lauffen am Neckar (where it isnot celebrated anymore) and Göppingen, where it is still verylively.
The fact that the »Gratitude and Peace Festival« has beenpreserved as a »Children and Spring Festival« has to be owed to the donators and volunteer workers.
In Vaihingen the Festival has become one for the entire city, because since after the second world war, many historicgroups, diverse clubs and the sister city were included into theparade and many other events developed around the coreFestival.
