Carola Barrios Nogueira is a Venezuelan PhD Architect, Museologist and Historian. In addition to the professional development in areas of architectural design, curatorial projects and research, she writes regularly in internatio-nal journals on modern and contemporary Latin American architecture from a cross-disciplinary perspective. While living in Barcelona since the late 90s, she has been pro-fessor and lecturer at Universities in Caracas, Barcelona, São Paulo and Princeton.

Prior to her architectural training, she attended at California College of Arts and Crafts. Her fascination with Textile Art led her to resume the unfinished artistic studies started in Oakland to continue them recently at the Escola Massana in Barcelona. Today she combines her professional and academic activities with the creation of the design firm Carola Nogueira, where Architecture and Textiles interla-ce in a constant process of feedback as described in the principles of her work:

My passion for textiles is based on its cons-tructive qualities. I investigate with textures, materials and colors in order to create patter-ns, surfaces and volumes that excite me and spark my imagination. From its minimal unit of expression --the knot--, textile as a creati-ve medium allows the articulation of complex structures through its reproducibility and end-less combinatorial possibilities. As an architect and designer I'm always looking for significant visual and spatial relations. The grid-like analy-sis of space, that is crucial in architectural sketches, becomes an early key to think on textile design in terms of depth and structure.

In particular, I’m interested in the abstract reinterpretation of geometrical patterns and shapes found in the simple beauty of the natu-ral environment in a Zen philosophical sense. But I’m also inspired by human and cultural production, coming from elaborated arts and crafts to images of architecture and cityscape fabrics. The part I enjoy most of my work starts in the identification and isolation of suggestive forms for exploring their compositional poten-tialities. By playing with hierarchy, color, con-trast, repetition and balance I aim to convey emotion and thought in the concretion of my own vocabulary.

TRADITIONAL — CONTEMPORARY

NATURAL — ARTIFICIAL

Since my early childhood in Venezuela and Brazil I have been influenced by these aes-thetical procedures with direct allusion to the avant-garde movements of local and internatio-nal modern art and architecture. My personal explorations have been also fed by the textile handcrafts from the native artisans of Vene-zuela in their particular use of palm fibers, or the delicate rendas (laces) by the embroiderers from Northeast of Brazil. Other strong referen-ces are to be found in the refined Japanese tex-tile techniques and the varied African tissues, both in their minimalist and timeless qualities.

My work developed and produced in Barcelo-na reflects in essence the synthesis and inte-gration of those languages and techniques in the assembling and layering of characteristics often opposed: traditional-contemporary, na-tural-artificial, handcraft-design or local-uni-versal. This “joining” sprit is reflected in the architecture of each piece and collection, where special care is taken in selecting and combining new and recycled materials to crea-te textile surfaces of character and aesthetic quality in its commitment to social and envi-ronmental sustainability.

Maia is a creative principle associated with the world of appearance in the Sanskrit tradition. It’s considered one of the four 'knots' that bind our soul to the material universe. Knots are the minimal joint expres-sion in any textile creation. In the assembling of materials, textures and colors they configure a particular relation of mass and void, lights and shadows.

We want to reflect the poetic qualities of such constructive spirit in the development of our Maia Collection. By selecting a palette of subtle sheen, each piece is conceived as a unique wearable object to highlight and complement natural beauty.
