48 Mahurangi Matters August 1, 2014 localmatters.co.nz Congratulations also to our Year 8 Girls’ Hockey team which won the North Harbour Intermediate Schools’ zone day competition. The 52nd annual sporting exchange with Hauraki Plains College (HPC) took place at Mahurangi College in the last week of term 2. The 168 students from HPC were billeted out overnight and all the sports played in good spirits, with HPC winning 5 of the games and taking home the overall trophy this year. The winning teams from Mahurangi were First Fifteen Rugby, Boys’ Hockey and Boys’ First XI Soccer. On Sunday 29th June the Harmony Group- the Black Gems - travelled to St Cuthbert’s Church in Kaukaukapa to perform an hour long concert. The girls did group, duet and solo performances with Jennifer Eirena performing a comic solo piece as the finale. The girls were thrilled to be asked for an encore and they performed Jenny’s composition, Promise of Land. The concert helped the church raise funds and they are very grateful for the time and talent The Black Gems gave. The Careers Department is organising the annual Careers evening, where approximately 60 Training establishments and occupations will be represented, including Universities, Technical Institutes, Training Organisations, Police and Armed Forces. Work and Income will be represented, to give information on job opportunities to students and members of the community. A large number of ex-pupils, representing various trades and careers, will also be attending and will welcome any inquiries. Anyone wanting their organisation or business to be represented at this evening is invited to contact Marilyn Newlove, Careers Advisor at the College by phoning 09 425 8039 ext 714. In past years the Careers Evenings have been very well attended. They are a good opportunity for students to look at different careers and to help them with their subject choices. It is also an ideal opportunity for adults wishing to further their education and to explore possibilities open to them. Members of the public are encouraged to attend. David Macleod, Principal NEWSLETTER from the Principal David Macleod important dates ISSUE 6: August 2014 MAHURANGI COLLEGE Dear Parents and Guardians Tena Koutou Katoa Welcome back to term 3. The senior internal exams start in week 8 of this term, so it is very important all senior students are strongly focused on their academic studies from the start of this term. The Junior Show will take place in week 6 of this term, and there will be a Teacher Only Day on Friday 5th September. Congratulations to all students, staff and parents involved in this year’s Stage Challenge production of “Not My Crime, Still My Sentence”, which came second on the final night of the Auckland competition at the Aotea Centre on Friday 4th July. In keeping with the ethos of Stage Challenge, all aspects of the performance were very strongly student led and special commendation is deserved by our student leaders, Claudia Ainscow-Pati, Ariana Osborne and Elspeth Free, who won the Student Leadership Award. We also won six Awards of Excellence. These were in Drama, Costuming, Choreography, Visual Enhancement, Stage Use and Set Design. It was pleasing that two of our neighbouring Y7-13 schools had also done very well the previous night when Orewa College came second and Whangaparaoa College came third in their competition.
