History

Mahindra & Mahindra was set up as a steel trading company in 1945. It soon

expanded into manufacturing general-purpose utility vehicles, starting with assembly

under licence of the iconic Willys Jeep  in India. Soon established as the Jeep

manufacturers of India, M&M later branched out into the manufacture of light

commercial vehicles (LCVs) and agricultural tractors. Today, M&M is the leader in

the utility vehicle segment in India with its flagship UV Scorpio and enjoys a growing

global market presence in both the automotive and tractor businesses.

Over the past few years, M&M has expanded into new industries and geographies.

They entered into the two-wheeler segment by taking over Kinetic Motors in India.[5] M&M also has controlling stake in REVA Electric Car Company[6] and acquired

South Korea's SsangYong Motor Company in 2011.[7]

The US based Reputation Institute recently ranked Mahindra among the top 10

Indian companies in its 'Global 200: The World's Best Corporate Reputations' list.[8]

Mahindra Pick Up (old version)

Mahindra & Mahindra is a major automobile manufacturer of utility vehicles,

passenger cars, pickups, commercial vehicles, and two wheelers. Its tractors are

sold on six continents It has acquired plants in China[9] and the United Kingdom,[10] and has three assembly plants in the USA. M&M has partnerships with

international companies like Renault SA, France[11] and International Truck and

Engine Corporation, USA.

M&M has a global presence[12] and its products are exported to several countries.[13] Its global subsidiaries include Mahindra Europe Srl. based in Italy,[14]Mahindra

USA Inc., Mahindra South Africa[15] and Mahindra (China) Tractor Co. Ltd.

M&M made its entry into the passenger car segment with the Logan in April 2007

under the Mahindra Renault joint venture.[16] M&M will make its maiden entry into the

heavy trucks segment with Mahindra Navistar, the joint venture with International

Truck, USA.[17]

M&M's automotive division makes a wide range of vehicles including MUVs, LCVs

and three wheelers. It offers over 20 models including new generation multi-utility

vehicles like the Scorpio and the Bolero. It formerly had a joint venture

with Ford called Ford India Private Limited to build passenger cars.

At the 2008 Delhi Auto Show, Mahindra executives said the company is pursuing an

aggressive product expansion program that would see the launch of several new

platforms and vehicles over the next three years, including an entry-level SUV

designed to seat five passengers and powered by a small turbodiesel engine.[18]True

to their word, Mahindra & Mahindra launched the Mahindra Xylo in January 2009,

and as of June 2009, the Xylo has sold over 15000 units.[19]

Also in early 2008, Mahindra commenced its first overseas CKD operations with the

launch of the Mahindra Scorpio in Egypt,[20] in partnership with the Bavarian Auto

Group. This was soon followed by assembly facilities in Brazil. Vehicles assembled

at the plant in Bramont, Manaus, include Scorpio Pik Ups in single and double cab

pick-up body styles as well as SUVs.[21]

Mahindra & Mahindra has controlling stakes in Reva electric and has submitted letter

of Intent for South Korea's Ssangyong

Mahindra plans to sell the diesel SUVs and pickup trucks starting in late 2010 in

North America[23] through an independent distributor, Global Vehicles USA, based

in Alpharetta, Georgia.[24] Mahindra announced it will import pickup trucks from India

Page 6: Mahindra Scorpio

in knockdown kit (CKD) form to circumvent the Chicken tax.[25]CKDs are complete

vehicles that will be assembled in the U.S. from kits of parts shipped in crates.[25] On

18 October 2010, however, it was reported that Mahindra had indefinitely delayed

the launch of vehicles into the North American market, citing legal issues between it

and Global Vehicles after Mahindra retracted its contract with Global Vehicles earlier

in 2010, due to a decision to sell the vehicles directly to consumers instead of

through Global Vehicles.[26]. However, a November 2010 report quoted John Perez,

the CEO of Global vehicles USA, as estimating that he expects Mahindra’s small

diesel pickups to go on sale in the U.S. by spring 2011, although legal complications

remain, and Perez, while hopeful, admits that arbitration could take more than a

year.[27]Later reports suggest that the delays may be due to an Manindra scrapping

the original model of the truck and replacing it with an upgraded one before selling

them to Americans[28]

In 2010, India's Mahindra & Mahindra Limited was named as the preferred bidder to

acquire the bankruptcy-protected SsangYong Motor Company.[2] Mahindra is

expected to gain a controlling stake in the company by March 2011 and the planned

acquisition has been approved by South Korea's Free Trade Commission[29]

Development

Prior to the mid-nineties, Mahindra & Mahindra was an automobile assembly

company. The company manufactured Willys Jeeps and its minor modified versions

(modifications carried out in India). In 1996, the company planned to enter the SUV

segment with a new product which could compete globally. Since M & M didn't have

the technical know-how to make a new age product, they devised a whole new

concept among Indian auto companies. Roping in new executives such as Dr.

Pawan Goenka and Alan Durante who had worked in the auto industry in western

countries, the company broke the rule that says automakers must design, engineer

and test their own vehicles (spending millions of dollars in the process).

Page 21: Mahindra Scorpio

The new Mahindra Scorpio SUV had all of its major systems designed directly by

suppliers with the only input from Mahindra being design, performance specifications

and program cost. Design and engineering of systems was done by suppliers, as

was testing, validation and materials selection. Sourcing and engineering locations

were also chosen by suppliers. The parts were later assembled in a Mahindra plant

under the Mahindra Badge (as Mahindra is a well known brand in India in the MUV

segment). Using this method the company was able to build a from scratch a new

vehicle with virtually 100 percent supplier involvement from concept to reality for Rs

600 crore ($120 million)[5], including improvements to the plant. The project took 5

years to move from concept to final produc

Second generation Mahindra Scorpio

The Mahindra Scorpio was launched in India in 2002. Soon after the success of the

Scorpio, Mahindra launched an upgraded Scorpio with plush seats and rear centre

arm rest, dual tone exterior colour and various minor changes.

Second Generation

In April 2006, the company launched an upgraded Scorpio – dubbing it the 'All-New'

Scorpio.

At the Auto Expo 2006, Delhi, Mahindra also showcased their future plans on the

Scorpio model by showcasing a Hybrid Scorpio with CRDe engine and a Scorpio

based on a pick-up truck. The Hybrid, the first such vehicle developed in India was

developed by Arun Jaura, a former Ford employee. His senior, Dr. Pawan Goenka, a

Page 23: Mahindra Scorpio

former GM engineer currently heads Mahindra's automotive division and looks after

the overall Scorpio project.

In June 2007, Mahindra launched a pick-up version in India known as the Scorpio

Getaway. Recently, M & M has launched a face lifted version of the model.

In November 2007, Mahindra launched a teaser campaign for their new Scorpio

Model, the m_Hawk on their official website.[6]

On April 14, 2008, Mahindra revealed a concept of a diesel-electric hybrid version of

their Scorpio SUV at the 2008 SAE World Congress.[7]

21st Sep 2008 Mahindra launched their latest Scorpio with 6 speed automatic

transmission gears.

Safety

The upgraded Mahindra Scorpio Getaway, launched in Australia in mid-2009

received additional safety features to the Indian model, such as ABS

Brakesand Airbags in an attempt to raise its rating to a minimum of 3 stars from the

current 2 star ANCAP rating.

In Western Europe, so as not to confuse the vehicle with a previous Ford vehicle of

the same name, it is called the Mahindra Goa.

United States

Mahindra has for a while had plans on exporting to the United States, possibly with

a diesel-electric hybrid.[8] In 2006 it entered into an agreement with Global Vehicles

USA to import and distribute Mahindra vehicles.[9] It now plans to release a

modified Pick-up version of the Scorpio (currently unnamed due to trademark issues

with the Ford Scorpio) in the US by the end of 2009.[10] This vehicle is projected to

cost in the low $20,000s.

Scorpio's interiors look quite modern with a nicely rounded and organic-looking dashboard with large buttons and knobs. The front seats are pretty comfortable and offer the best lower back support. The Scorpio's chassis is extremely rigid and stiff and you don't get any rattles. The suspension is very supple and in city traffic or at low speeds, it glides over the road, the soft suspension working noiselessly to filter

Page 29: Mahindra Scorpio

out the bumps. Even on rough or bad road, at least when driven at low speeds, the suspension copes pretty well. The steering and other controls are pretty light, which makes it o easy to drive in town. Mahindra has been working on the Scorpio almost constantly and last time they launched it with m-Hawk engine that makes use of 2nd generation Bosch common rail injection system with solenoid injectors.

The 4 cylinder, m-Hawk features VGT develops 290 Nm of torque in a wide range of 1600-2800rpm. The VGT will help to eliminate turbo lag. It develops 120bhp and can reach 60kmph from zero in just 5.7 seconds. All this is possible because the light weight mHawk engine, with its all-aluminium cylinder heads is tuned for power. Turbochargers feed concentrated gusts of wind into a Variable Geometry Turbine, a simple yet cunning device that partially closes to trap the air inside at high pressures. This generates tremendous torque even at low speeds. A decrease in gross weight, coupled with a reduction in base engine friction, ensures that parasitic losses of power are seriously lowered and acceleration gets even better. The sporty bonnet scoop provides a direct passage for air to rush into the mHawk’s new top-mounted intercooler. The intercooler, in turn, directs this air into passages to optimise engine cooling.

The reduced mass of the m-Hawk will also help in improvement of dynamics, the m-Hawk engine is built from aluminium alloy and hence it is 60kg lighter than the current 2.6L CRDe engine. Other than the m-Hawk engine, mahindra has refreshed the interiors of the scorpio. Safety features include ABS, Cruise control, Headlight sensor, Wiper sensor & Reverse parking sensors. Other features include stereo controls on steering wheel, smart new alloy wheels and working bonnet scoop. The advanced Intellipark system allows you to keep a look out for anything happening behind you without having to turn your head. Moreover, reversing ultrasonic sensors in the rear help you judge the distance between the vehicle and anything in its way. A sophisticated warning system allows you to judge the location of any obstacle in the rear view mirror. There is also tyre pressure monitoring system which tells you the exact air pressure and temperature of each tyre.

The sensors located in each tyre monitor pressure and temperature and any unwanted changes in either will immediately flash on the instrument cluster, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable driving experience. There are certain design weaknesses, especially at the rear where it looks relatively boxy, as well as the upright stance and the third row is also cramped and tall passengers are also short on headroom. Also the small central console controls and buttons are often inaccessible while driving the car. Air con vents in between the front seats are effective cooling for rear passengers. Overall, the new Scorpio sounds great with path breaking technology and user-friendly, modern features. It is a clear validation of Mahindra's customer-centric approach to business. This package would delight the evolved, new age customer.
