The First Class is called the Maharlika Class. The Maharlika consisted of the rich and powerful. This class included the Datu and his family

and relatives. Lakan and Gat were the words used to address the men who belonged to this class. These names (titles) were also

placed or included at the beginning of their last names. The Datu’s wife was also known as the Dayang.

Timawa:

The Timawa also known as the “Freemen” were the second class of people. At this time you could call them your “Daily Average

Citizens.” There were different ways on how Timawa people got their freedom. Some bought it, others were given freedom,

Page 9: Maharlika

or some were already born with their freedom. But all Timawa were expected to be completely loyal to their Datu. They were

Page 10: Maharlika

Free to choose their own occupation, as soldiers, merchants, etc. They were also free to pick their own wives..

Page 11: Maharlika

They could have servants (alipin) and they can also own land and other properties.

Alipin:

Page 13: Maharlika

Alipin also known as slaves were the lowest class of people. There were two (2) kinds of slaves – Aliping namamahay

Page 14: Maharlika

and Aliping Saguiguilid. Aliping namamahay could have a house (usually within the property of his master) and could

Page 15: Maharlika

Marry with the permission of their master.

Page 16: Maharlika

The other kind – Aliping Saguiguilid lives with his or her master forever even when the master diesIt is said that the aliping saguiguilid

Page 17: Maharlika

would be burried alive He or She could own no properties but could marry only with permission from their master.

Page 18: Maharlika

The reason why there are social classes is so the leader can tell about his people. And the Datu can keep peace and order.

Page 19: Maharlika

We can compare the classes from the past and present but there has been some changes.

Page 20: Maharlika

There are no more slaves and we already have a government and a president to rule the country.
