The Niagara Falls are made up of two water falls: the Horseshoe Falls in Canada and the American Falls in the USA.

They are very powerful and the name “Niagara” is an American Indian name which means “thunder water”.

An Indian legend tells of a giant water snakewhich forms a semi-circle shape with its head onone side of the river and its tail on the other; thisis the origin of the Horseshoe Falls. They say that the spirit of Lelawala, the daughterof Chief Eagle Eye, protects her people fromharm: she is “the maid of the mist”.

Stonehenge, a megalithic ruin, is a circle ofhuge stones near Salisbury, in England. Local folklore says the structure is the workof giants, gods or wizards.
