Music Magazine Evaluation

Page 2: Magazine Evaluation

• The task was to create a new music magazine that would appeal to the target audience. My target audience is females between the ages of 15-25. The reason behind choosing my target audience to mainly be focused on females is because currently with music magazines that are on sale with the UK the main force is on males between the ages of 18-30. This is because that are more likely to purchase object that are adverted within the music magazine and more likely to attend gigs than females however this leaves a wide gap within the music magazine that could be filled with my magazine. I also chose my music magazine to be Indie as the genre Indie is fast becoming an popular music genre with an ever-growing fan-base. On the other hand it would also attract a male audience because with using females on my front cover they maybe sexuality attract to the females on the front cover so would purchase the magazine. I used Indie bands and artists that are with the genre Indie on my magazine so that itself would attract an fan-base that like the artist or band. Here are so examples:

Introduction

Florence and the machine King Of Leon Muse

In what ways does your music magazine use, develop or challenge the forms and conventions of real music magazines?

Page 4: Magazine Evaluation

I challenged the codes and conventions of a real music magazine by using the full word instead of shorting the word like for example: NME New Musical Express. This instantly sets side my music magazine from other indie or alternative magazine because the masthead is different and unique which would help to attract my target audience, which itself is different. I made my masthead bold so that it would attract the attention of the audience. I also chose to use two colours which are black and grey which challenges the codes and conventions of a magazine as most magazine use the colours red, black and white.

MastheadTip-on

I developed the codes and conventions of a real music magazine by including a tip-on which would help attract the attention of the target audience.

BarcodeI developed the codes and conventions of a music magazine by using a barcode which is essential as it is needed so that the magazine can be purchased.

Feature article photograph

I developed the codes and conventions of a music a magazine by using a middle shot of as my feature article photograph mainly because you can see the star persona more clearly and it would help attract the attention of a male audience as they may be attract to the star persona. I also chose to make the photo a NVC (non verbal communication) as it would help attract the audience .

Use of colour

Many alternative or indie music magazine traditionally use the colours white, red and black. These colours are stereotyped as uni-sex which would open the target audience however I chose to use grey and black as these colours are uni-sex and will help attract the attention of a female audience.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In my magaizne I’m selling a lifestyle. I’m selling a upper-class lifestyle by using world famours bands and artists and upcomining artists that would tell the target audience about the lifestyle change and benfits from being a music artist. My target audience themselves would be in either full-time education or in empleoyment on mininal wages causing them to be in lower working class however with the help of there parents could buy the magaizne and objects that is adverts within my magaizne as the target audience would feel that puschasing these objects would help them acheive the lifestyle that is present with my magaizne.

Who would your target audience be and why?

My target audience is between 15-25. I’m also targeting mainly females. One of the main reasons behind having a female target audience is because the females would be attracted to the lifestyle that is represented within my magazine and would like to achieve this lifestyle.

Another reason behind my decision is because currently with music magazines that are on sale within the UK, force on males between the ages of 18-30. This is because they are more likely to purchase objects that are adverted within the music magazine and more likely to attend gigs than females however this leaves a wide gap within the music magazine that could be filled with my magazine. However my target audience also ranges outwards towards a male audience which would be attract to the star persona or interest in the articles that can be find within my magazine. I also thought that the main reason behind having a female target audience is because the females would be attracted to the lifestyle that is represented within my magazine and would like to achieve this lifestyle.

What kind of Media institution might distribute your music magazine and why?

The media institution I think that might distribute my music magazine is Bauer. The reason I think that Bauer would distribute my magazine is because my music magazine is unique and different. I think that because my music magazine is targeted for a female audience is would create a whole new adverting campaign that would be using my magazine to target females consumers.

I think that Bauer would also like to distribute my magazine because just like the other magazines it distributes for example Kerrang and Q it could also turn my magazine into a radio station that would attract attention to the magazine.

To attract my target audience I found out that my target audience likes thing to be keep simple but interesting so they are drawn in to read the articles. Hopefully my laid-back approach to the layout and editing will attract them to my product. On my double page article which was about the girl band, I included simple yet interesting information about their lifestyle, fashion and music which would attract the attention of young females that are themselves attracted to the lifestyle of a famous artist which is presented in my music magazine. I included chatty and informal information for example: laughing . With the help of using images that are of girls it would help attract the attention of my target audience as female as they are attracted to the lifestyle within my magazine while on the other the hand males would be attract to the girls that are presented on the front cover.

How did you attract and address your audience?

What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this music magazine?

In the progression from my preliminary to my full product, I have learnt how much hard work and planning it takes to create a successful magazine. After making my flat plans I started taking photos that could be use for my magazine. Whiles doing this I found out several tips and tricks about using a camera, such as trying out different height while taking photos of your subjects . However I also learnt that if you don’t keep your hand steady when you are taking the photo then it will became blurry and wasteful.

After taking the photos, I uploaded them onto the computer however while doing this I accidently erased half of the photos causing my to only have half of the photos. After this I used Photoshop to crop and erase the green background however while using this programme I need assistance as I struggled with using it.

However after I edited my photos in Photoshop I upload them into Indesign and started to complete the layout for my magazine again I need assistance with this programme as I was not used to it however thought that the programme was easy to use and user friendly.

After completing my music magazine I look at it and thought that it looked just like a real music magazine that would attract the attention of my target audience. I also thought that my decision to use just two colours was not a very clever idea as it would have to very on the contest when it does attract the attention of the audience straight away they would have to be looking for my magazine to find it.

Finally when I finished my music magazine I looked at my preliminary task and thought that during the process of creating my music magazine I picked up tips and tricks to help me, I learnt about Photoshop, photography and Indesign. I thought that my preliminary was very amateurish and doesn't look very professional
