Purchased as a foal by Shadwell for 190,000gns at Tattersalls December, Mukhadram was unraced as a 2-year-old and won twice in five starts at three. He opened his 4-year-old campaign last year with a victory in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. prior to finishing second to Al Kazeem (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G1 Prince of Wales=s S. at Royal Ascot. He was third behind that rival in the Coral-Eclipse and won the G2 York S. three weeks later. Mukhadram returned to be second in this year=s G1 Dubai World Cup, and was fourth in the Prince of Wales=s before notching a much-deserved Group 1 victory in the Coral-Eclipse. He was third behind fellow Sheikh Hamdan colorbearer Taghrooda (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. July 26, and has most recently finished fourth in the G1 Juddmonte International and G1 Irish Champion S. Estimate was one of eight horses caught up in Britain=s morphine saga over the summer, with the other six involved in yesterday=s hearing also disqualified. One more case-- that of trainer Eve Houghton-Johnson--is still to be heard. Because of the nature of the source of the morphine, Estimate=s trainer, Sir Michael Stoute, was not penalized, nor were any of the other trainers--Barry and Charlie Hills, Gay Kelleway and Tony Carroll--with horses affected. ALucida is very well and we are expecting her to perform accordingly,@ her trainer said. Chris Humber=s New Providence (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) may be best of the home- trained contingent after her defeat of the impressive subsequent winner Marsh Hawk (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in Salisbury=s G3 Dick Poole Fillies= S. over six furlongs last time Sept. 4, and trainer Hugo Palmer is hopeful she can make her mark. AYou never want to be frightened of one horse and we=re not, you=ve got them all to beat of course,@ he explained. Shadwell=s Stud Director Richard Lancaster added,"Mukhadram is a Group 1 winner in the UK and hasdefeated a total of 49 stakes winners to date including24 individual Group 1 winners. He will also be the firstson of Shamardal to stand in the UK, and with his sireexperiencing a real purple patch with 20 stakes winnersin 2014 alone, Sheikh Hamdan felt now was the righttime to retire him to stud. A fee has not yet been setfor him, but our intention is to pitch him very fairly toattract the maximum number of mares and give him thebest possible start to his stallion career."

Cont. from p1 AFollowing today's meeting of the disciplinary panelof the British Horseracing Authority, we totally acceptin full the panel's findings,@ Warren said. "We aregrateful to the BHA for its thorough and fairinvestigation, which concluded that the positive

samples from sevenhorses, includingEstimate, were theresult of acontaminated batchof feed from anindependent supplier. We also welcomethe BHA'srecognition that thefive respectivetrainers, who includeSir Michael Stoute, took all reasonable

precautions to avoid breaching the Rules of Racing, andthat the accidental administration of a prohibitedsubstance was in no way the fault of those connectedto the horses.@ The morphine and oripavine positives are expected tohave stemmed from poppy seeds that contaminated afeed product produced by feed company Dodson &Horrell. Barry Hills suggested he could take legal actionagainst the feed suppliers. "I haven't spoken to anyone else, but that wouldseem to be the sensible thing to do,@ he said. "Ownersneed compensation for things like transport, and otherbits and pieces." Jamie Stier, the BHA=s director of raceday operationsand regulation, said, "It was BHA's position in thehearing that the source of the positive samples formorphine and oripavine was a contaminated batch offeed and that in the circumstances the trainers took allreasonable precautions to avoid breaching the Rules ofRacing. As such BHA submitted that no penalty shouldbe imposed on the trainers; however, in accordancewith the Rules of Racing, the horses involved should bedisqualified from the relevant races. The disciplinarypanel today agreed this position.@

Campaigned at six furlongs prior to this test, Maftoolwas a promising second after a tardy start on debut atEpsom July 10, before going one better at PontefractAug. 6 and finishing second in the G3 Sirenia S. onKempton=s Polytrack Sept. 6.

Slowly away again here under Richard Hughes, thebay moved smoothly from the rear to tackle thelong-time leader Markaz approaching the final furlongand, after quickly subduing that rival, drew away up therising ground for a convincing score. AMaftool is a nicehorse and has come on from his last race,@ Saeed binSuroor commented. AWe will keep the options open, buthe could go for a Group 1 next time--maybe the DubaiDewhurst S. [at Newmarket Oct. 17] or the Racing PostTrophy [at Doncaster Oct. 25]. He will handle anyground and surface. Seven furlongs or a mile will be noproblem and he is one of our best 2-year-olds in thestable. We might take him back to Dubai, as hispedigree suggests he could act on dirt as well.@ JockeyRichard Hughes added, AI was intending to be up withthe pace, but he missed the kick slightly--they wentquick and I was two lengths behind straight away. One of the unexposed types is Hubert JohnStrecker=s What Say You (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and shewas impressive when winning over this trip on the July Course here Aug. 22. Trainer Karl Burke said,AWe=ve always thought a lot of her and she hasn=t let usdown yet. She=s obviously got to step up again on whatshe showed in her maiden at Newmarket, but webelieve she will. She=s an uncomplicated filly and shestays well. We certainly hope she=ll progress anddevelop into a Classic filly. I think she will put up a boldshow and what finishes in front of her will have to bevery useful.@

STRIP DOWN Having been tested in the top league, Godolpin=sOutstrip (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) enjoys a slightclass drop today as he tackles the G2 Shadwell Joel S.at Newmarket. Just under three-lengths fourth toKingman (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) in the G1 SussexS. at Glorious Goodwood when last seen July 30, lastyear=s GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf and G2 Champagne S. winner had also been third behindJuddmonte=s star miler in the June 17 G1 St James=sPalace S. at Royal Ascot.

AOutstrip is in great nick. We purposely gave him abreak after the Sussex S. and felt that this would be anice race for him,@ conditioner Charlie Applebycommented. AHe has underperformed on his twoprevious starts on the Rowley Mile, but the ground wastoo soft [when third] in the Dewhurst S. and he scopedbadly after [finishing last in] the 2000 Guineas. I amhopeful of a decent performance, providing the groundis good, and it looks like the right starting point for himgoing into the latter part of the season.@ Arguably themost intriguing contender is Normandie Stud Ltd=srapidly progressing Wannabe Yours (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}),who was impressive when taking Goodwood=s G3 Thoroughbred S. over this trip at the start ofAugust. The Classic generation is also represented bythe June 7 G1 Epsom Derby fourth Arod (Ire) (Teofilo{Ire}). Surprisingly, Peter Chapple-Hyam has decided torevert to a mile with Qatar Racing=s bay, who was alatest fifth in the G1 Juddmonte Interna-tional at YorkAug. 20. Jockey Jamie Spencer told PA Sport, AHe=skind of on the comeback trail. The pace was verystop-start in the Juddmonte. He=s a good horse, but hejust needs to get it right. He shows a lot of ability athome and, hopefully, we=ll see it.@ Of the older brigade, the G3 Sovereign S. and G3 Superior Mile winnerCaptain Cat (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) and the G3 Desmond S. and G3 Strensall S. scorer Custom Cut(Ire) (Notnowcato {GB}) will prove tough nuts to crack.

RUPEE LOOKS TO REGAIN WINNING WAYS Australia=s sprinting sensation and the world=s currenthighest-rated horse in that category, Lankan Rupee(Aus) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}), had a six-race win

streak snapped whensecond, beaten a shorthead by Angelic Light(Aus) (Holy RomanEmperor {Ire}), in theG2 McEwen S. here onseasonal debut Sept. 6,but that surpriseturnover has apparentlydone little to dim thetriple Group 1 winner=sreputation, with justfour showing up tooppose him in today=s G1 Moir S. under thelights at Moonee Valley. While short on quantity, the quartet assembled

to oppose Lankan Rupee is of the highest quality, andthey will certainly ensure the 5-year-old gelding doesnot have an easy time of things. B-Dell Ridge Farm LLC (KY); T-Shug McGaughey.

Lifetime Record: 4-2-2-0, $401,200.Last Start: 2nd Gulfstream allowance Mar. 12.

Just two weeks after Top Billing (Curlin) was takenoff the Triple Crown trail with a cracked cannon bone,Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey lost all chance ofcapturing consecutive renewals of the GI KentuckyDerby when Honor Code (A.P. Indy) was put on theshelf due to a slight tear in his right hind suspensory. The tear was diagnosed the morning after he breezed ahalf-mile at Gulfstream in :48.12 in advance of ascheduled start in the GI TwinSpires.com WoodMemorial S. at Aqueduct. The hulking dark bay was sent to join his sidelinedstablemate at WinStar Farm and returned to training atFair Hill in mid-July. AWe just gave him plenty of time,@ McGaugheycommented. Hechanged his mind when Gulfstream racing secretaryP.J. Campo approached him and asked if he would bewilling to run the colt there if he filled a two-turnallowance race for 3-year-olds. CLASSIC GEMS ON OFFER AT TATTSBy Kelsey Riley For almost as long as Tattersalls has been facilitatingsales of Thoroughbreds in the U.K., British racehorseowners have been in search of that rare specimen withjust the right dose of speed, stamina and courage toland the G1 2000 Guineas, G1 Epsom Derby and

G1 St Leger. Atotal of 15 haveachieved it, withNijinsky being themost recent in1970, and for thelast 44 yearsowners have beenon the hunt forthat once-in-a-lifetime horse toachieve the nearimpossible. While theBritish Triple

Crown has since fallen out of fashion--with Camelot(GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in 2012 being the only horse to evenattempt the feat since Nijinsky--the quest for this kindof greatness burns brighter than ever, and year-on-yearthe Tattersalls October Yearling Sale has proven aleading source of British Classic winners purchased atall levels of the market. Not only was Camelot--a525,000gns 2010 graduate who went on to win thefirst two jewels and finish second in the G1 St Legerafter adding the G1 Irish Derby--unearthed at TattersallsOctober Book 1, but this year the Newmarket auctionhouse achieved a rare feat when its 2012 graduatesNight of Thunder (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), Australia (GB)(Galileo {Ire}) and Kingston Hill (GB) (Mastercraftsman{Ire}) swept the three series races, giving Tattersalls aTriple Crown of its own. In addition, Tattersalls hassold six of the last 12 Epsom Derby winners; five of thelast 12 2000 Guineas winners and four of the last 13St Leger winners. Tattersalls= Classic tradition could beset to continue next year, with two 2013 Book 1graduates, Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) andIvawood (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}) the early favorites fornext year=s Derby and 2000 Guineas, respectively. Given the success of the last three renewals of theTattersalls October Yearling Sale, such anaccomplishment should not come as a great surprise. The current wave began its rise in 2011, when theaggregate jumped 3.4 million guineas to51,634,000gns for 364 sold--85 fewer sold than theprevious year. Similarly, the 2011 average jumped 32%to 141,852gns, and the median was up 43% to100,000gns.

Those figures continued their steady upward march in2012. Each of the three Book 1 sessions that yearbroke the previous record for aggregate per session at aEuropean auction, resulting in a gross of 68,102,500,and a 15% increase in average to 162,925gns.Remarkably, theclimb continuedlast year. Despite79 fewer horsessold, last year=saggregate jumpedto 70,343,000 for339 sold, with anaverage of207,501gns and amedian of130,000gns. Lastyear=s openingsession saw theEuropean recordfor a yearling atauction smashed when a full-brother to G1 InvestecOaks runner-up Secret Gesture (GB) (Galileo {Ire})realized 3.6 million guineas from John Magnier. To theawe of the global bloodstock industry, that recordstood for just 24 hours. The following day, SheikhJoaan shelled out 5 million guineas for a full-sister to2012 Oaks winner Was (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), which alsoset a world record for a yearling filly sold at auction. While it is these record-breaking prices that dominatethe headlines, it has been proven that Classic successcan be sourced from all levels of the market atTattersalls. While Australia was plucked out of the topend of the Book 1 market for 525,000gns by Coolmore,Night Of Thunder cost Rabbah Bloodstock just32,000gns at the same sale. Kingston Hill was a70,000gns purchase from Book 2 of the TattersallsOctober Yearling Sale. Four English or Irish Guineaswinners have been purchased from Book 1 since 2012,three of them for 50,000gns or less. AThe key to Book 1 is very evident just by looking atthe front and back covers of this year=s catalogue,@ saidTattersalls Marketing Director Jimmy George. AThe twohorses pictured exemplify what we feel Book 1 of theTattersalls October Yearling Sale is all about. There youhave Australia: a dual Derby winner, outstanding3-year-old colt of his generation and beautifully bred, bya Derby winner, out of an Oaks winner, who cost525,000 guineas at Europe's number one yearling sale.@

This select group includes the progeny ofor siblings to five Classic winners and 13 Group 1winners. New Shooters and Old Favorites... First season sires are always prone to causing a stirat the sales, and this year=s group appears an especiallystrong one, with all nine sires represented by their firstprogeny being Classic or Group 1 winners. DreamAhead and Canford Cliffs (Ire) are represented by 10 and seven yearlings, respectively. Poet=s Voice (GB)and Pour Moi (Ire) have eight each, while the latter=sgroup looks particularly strong, including the siblings tothree Group 1 winners. AEvery year people are fascinated by the first crop

sires and verymuch drawn tothem, trying toidentify a futurestar sire,@ Georgesaid. AI think thisyear's crop are anexciting bunch, and they'veattracted somevery high-classmares as well.@ While thesenew shooters arebeginning to

Monsun has justone catalogued, a colt out of a full-sister to Group 1winners Listen (Ire) and Sequoyah (Ire), and Montjeu isrepresented by six. Worldwide Acclaim... Tattersalls has in recent years seen a wide spread ofbuyers from all corners of the globe, and everywhere inbetween, descend on Park Paddocks for the OctoberYearling Sale. In addition to the well-documented rise ofbuyers from the Middle East, those increasing theirspending power during Book1 include interests fromChina, Hong Kong, Japan,Australia, South Africa andthe U.S. George pointed to thestrength of the Europeanbloodstock industry as awhole as a reason for buyersto travel from afar to stocktheir stables. AThe great thing aboutEurope at the moment is thedepth to the quality of thestallions standing particularlyin Britain in Ireland,@ he noted.AThe top five stallions inBritain in Ireland stand tallamongst the global elite, andthat has been recognized by owners, trainers andbuyers from throughout the world. We expect to seebuyers from North America, Europe, the Gulf region,Japan, Hong Kong, Australasia--you name it, we willexpect to see buyers from all corners of the world. Ithink that reflects not only on the quality of Book 1, butalso the standing in which European racing andbreeding is held globally.@

Five in a Million... Prize money is arguably the greatest challenge facingthe British industry, and Tattersalls= answer to this issueis its Tattersalls Millions series, which allows graduatesof Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale to compete in aseries of races worth ,1.3 million at NewmarketRacecourse. The 2014-2015 series, which kicked offwith a pair of ,100,000 races for juveniles Sept. 20,continues Oct. 4 with the ,500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy--the country=s richest race for 2-year-oldsand open to colts, geldings and fillies--and the,300,000 2YO Fillies Trophy. The series for this cropculminates next year in the ,200,000 TattersallsMillions 3YO Trophy and the ,100,000 TattersallsMillions 3YO Sprint at Newmarket=s Craven meeting inApril. AThe Tattersalls Millions series is hugely popular,@George noted. AIt provides owners opportunities to runfor very significant prize money with horses that maynot often get that opportunity. The key issue year onyear facing British owners is the level of prize money, inparticular at the maiden level as compared with the restof the world. These races, for many years now, haveprovided owners with an opportunity to earn seriousprize money. The more prize money owners earn, themore they're inclined to stay in the game and reinvest, and that's what the Tattersalls Millions is all about.@ The 2015-2016 edition will be tweaked slightly withfive races instead of six--one fewer 2-year-old race--forthe same ,1.3 million pot. An overwhelming number of Tattersalls Millionswinners in recent years were purchased in the30,000gns to 100,000 range, and George noted thatthe race series adds a new dimension to that area ofthe market. AI think it's key to that sector of the market of Book 1,@ he said. ABuyers can come to Book 1 and buyClassic winners at that level, but even if they fail to hitthe bullseye and manage to find a nice individual who isjust below top class, they'll have the opportunity torace for very significant prize money. It's a major factorin stimulating that middle market, and something that isvery popular with owners.@

Book Two Goes to Three... Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale wraps up itsthree-day stand Oct. 9, and after a four-day hiatus thesale returns Oct. 13 to 15 with Book 2. This secondsegment of the October Yearling Sale has developed asolid reputation its own right for turning out high-classhorses for modest prices--Kingston Hill being a case inpoint--and last year recorded gains across all indicators. The aggregate was up more than 5 million guineas froma smaller catalogue, while the average increased 21%to 47,529gns, and the median was up 16% to 37,000.The buyback rate was down 16% to 13%. In a move to further increase the focus on quality,Book 2 will this year be staged over two days afterrunning four days since 2005. George noted that thepopularity of Book 2 is increasing as Book 1 growsmore and more competitive. AYear on year, people will start in Book 1, and just asone sees in similar formats elsewhere in the world, people will keep on going until they fulfill theirrequirements,@ he said. AI think the key to Book 2 thisyear is we've tightened up the numbers a bit. It's beena four-day sale the last eight years, and this year we=vemade a conscious effort to tighten it up to three days. Ithink that has had a beneficial effect on the catalogueand I think it will make the sale more workable for theowners, trainers and agents.@ The two-day Book 3 will follow on Oct. 16 and 17,with Book 4 wrapping up proceedings later in themonth on Oct. 30 and 31. In the meantime, buyers canlook forward to seeing likely future Classic and Group 1winners on parade at the Tattersalls October YearlingSale Book 1, and with such a proven track record at alllevels of the market at Park Paddocks, just who thatcould be will be anyone=s guess. AIt's what racing is all about,@ George said withenthusiasm. AYou can come to Book 1 with 30,000 or40,000 guineas year in and year out and get yourself aGroup 1 winner, whether it's a Classic winner or aGroup 1-winning 2-year-old. Equally, you can comethere with millions and expect to find the same. I thinkwhat makes it extra special is it's not just one year hereor there that produces these sorts of results. Book 1produces this level of achievement year in and year out,so the buyers are confident that when they come to thesale they will see the cream of the European crop, andthat will go on to be reflected on racecoursesthroughout the world at the very highest level.@

Castlebridge Building On Success...By Michele MacDonald Often in business it takes decades, entire lifetimes oreven the span of generations to establish a brand thatis widely viewed as emblematic of success and quality. No such lengthy passage of time has been necessary

for the TheCastlebridgeConsignment, afull-service salesand bloodstockconsultancyoperated by fourpartners splitbetween bases inEngland andIreland. Growing rapidlyfrom its initial draft

of 10 mares to the 2002 Tattersalls December sale, thebusiness now is such an integral part of the upscaleEuropean auction scene that it is difficult to imagine aTattersalls sale without Castlebridge. "We have been fortunate to enjoy a fairly steadyprogression with the business," reflected partner anddirector Andrew Mead, who is based in Newmarketwith Castlebridge East, the operation's boarding andsale prep facility located adjacent to Cheveley Park Studand which houses about 30 boarders. "We had someold friends and clients who helped us in the early daysto whom we are very grateful, and that enabled us togather momentum. Basically, we were just lucky to bein the right place at the right time when we started." Fellow directors Bill and Tara Dwan oversee the largerCastlebridge Stud farm in County Meath, Ireland, whereabout 60 boarders typically are housed. MarionGoodbody, who long worked with Mead in their formerbloodstock agency, is the fourth partner as well as jointmaster of the Tipperary Foxhounds. Over the past several years, The CastlebridgeConsignment has racked up a number of stellarachievements that are the envy of consignorsworldwide, and the mammoth operation is poised foranother strong Tattersalls October yearling sale with 91horses catalogued over the course of the entire auction. Castlebridge, which annually consigns about 300horses fairly equally divided between yearlings, foalsand broodmares at sales in England, Ireland and France, reached the top of the business in only six years, leading all European consignors by turnover in 2008and again in 2009. The company has ranked amongstthe top six sellers during the Book 1 portion ofTattersalls' October sale in each of the past four years, leading all consignors in 2012 with 20 lots sold for6,077,000 guineas. The colt Hydrogen (GB) (Galileo{Ire}), the world's most expensive yearling of 2012,topped that sale when sold by Castlebridge for 2.5million guineas to David Redvers, bloodstock advisor toQatari Sheikh Fahad Al Thani.

The Castlebridge Consignment also led its peers intotal turnover for yearlings sold during other parts ofthe Tattersalls October sale in 2012, as well as leadingthat year's December foal and mare sales at England'sesteemed auction house. In 2013, Castlebridge lit upthe board at the Goffs November sale in Ireland, selling24 horses under the Paulyn Dispersal label for asale-topping total of i12,734,000, including theall-time Irish sale record of i6 million that G1 Irish Oakswinner Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) drew from Peterand Ross Doyle on behalf of Coolmore. Castlebridgefollowed the Paulyn lots with another 15 horses soldunder its own banner at the same sale for an additionalgross of i2,020,200. There is no sign that this thunderous momentum willsoon be quelled. By sheer numbers alone, Castlebridgewill continue to be a major factor throughout theTattersalls October yearling sale, with 30 lotscatalogued in Book 1, 33 in Book 2 and 28 in Book 3. Seven offspring of Sea The Stars (Ire) form thebackbone of the Castlebridge group in Book 1, withthree by Galileo (Ire), a pair by Oasis Dream (GB) andothers by such sires as Street Cry (Ire), Shamardal,Montjeu (Ire) and Fastnet Rock (Aus) offering plenty ofsizzle. The Castlebridge Consignment also will have theunusual distinction of offering the first Turkish-bredyearling ever to step into the ring during a Book 1session of the Tattersalls October sale. Lot 110, a baycolt by Sea The Stars, is the first foal out of thestakes-placed Unity (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and hails fromthe family of multiple Group 1 winner My Emma (GB)(Marju {Ire}) and European champion stayer ClassicCliche (Salse). "He is a nice Sea The Stars colt. We like him a lot,"Mead said, breaking his usual practice of notcommenting on individuals in the consignment onlybecause of the unique nature of the colt as aTurkish-bred. Rob Speers, bloodstock advisor to prominent Turkishowner and breeder Ibrahim Araci, acquired Unity in foalto Sea The Stars at the 2012 Tattersalls December salefor 525,000gns.

Castlebridge cont. This colt provides a glimpse of not only the caliber ofindividual The Castlebridge Consignment has becomeknown for, but also of some of the intriguingconnections from a variety of nations that the partnershave assembled in building their business. Mead and hiscolleagues do not like to discuss their clients, eventhose who own the horses they will offer at sale, oreven describe the individual assets of those sale horses. They hold to an unwritten policy of "being very coy," inMead's words, to avoid causing offense or crossing aline of discretion that might impede their business. However, the diversity of clients and connections thatthe four partners developed with what the Castlebridgewebsite bills as their "over a century's experience andhands-on expertise in all sectors of the bloodstockindustry" is a primary reason for the creation of thecompany.

Based on the breeding records of the yearlings theyhave on offer at Tattersalls, their clients and industryconnections include the Tsui family, which campaignedSea The Stars, through their Sunderland Holdings; theRabbah Bloodstock associates of Sheikh Mohammed;the family of Irish trainer Dermot Weld; Kuwaitibusinessmen Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar;Spanish owner Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez; CraigBennett's Merry Fox Stud, owner and breeder of recentG1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Cursory Glance (DistortedHumor); Whisperview Trading Ltd., the firm operated bytrainer Aidan O'Brien and his wife, Anne-Marie;American fashion mogul Andrew Rosen; Russian ZalimBifov, who has raced horses at the Dubai World CupCarnival, and Lady Bamford. As Mead recalls, the Castlebridge partners first begandiscussing how they could multiply the strength of theirindividual clients after Bill Dwan took care of a yearlingfilly purchased by Mead and Goodbody at Goffs morethan a decade ago. Sitting around a table in the homeof Tara Dwan's father, Irish trainer MichaelCunningham, they decided "to form a consigningbusiness that would hopefully make best use of theirvarious abilities and industry contacts," he said.

"The name 'Castlebridge' was decided upon at thatvery meeting," Mead noted. The partners were inspired in the choice of the nameby Trim Castle, Ireland's largest Anglo-Norman fortresslocated near the Dwans' farm in County Meath and wellknown as a location forscenes in severalmovies, including MelGibson's epicBraveheart. In the early days ofthe business, the Dwanswere the high-profilefaces of Castlebridge atthe sales, while Meadand Goodbodycontinued to work asbloodstock agents. Butin more recent years, allthe partners can be found working the Castlebridge salebarns at the major European auctions. "Bill is still by far the most recognized face of thecompany, particularly in Ireland, but we all haveindividual clients to whom we give personal attention,"Mead said, adding that having both English-based andIrish-based principals is an advantage in developingbusiness. "There seems to be a nice balance of English andIrish philosophy within Castlebridge," Mead added, observing that he is "clearly at home in front of alaptop, chewing over the small print of sale companyconditions of sale or dealing with a pile of sale pedigreeproofs. "I have to confess I can be quite pedantic on detail,"he confided. Meanwhile, Bill Dwan spends much of histime on the road, visiting farms and inspecting yearlingsand other horses that will be part of their sales drafts. The Castlebridge partners' guiding philosophy is fairlysimple: provide quality service. "We don't look to undercut anyone on price to attractbusiness," Mead said. "We have always charged thesame basic commission rates since we started thecompany and we make a point of re-charging our saleexpenses to the client at cost without any add-ons. Wealways try to employ the best possible staff and tosimply provide good service, with the ultimate aim ofgetting the horse sold. He continued, AI think it's fair to say we don'tactively chase new customers or look to take clientsfrom our fellow consignors. We take the view thatthere is plenty of business out there to be sharedaround and are just pleased if anyone likes what we doand wants to use us to sell their horses.@ One of Castlebridge's major strengths--and a primefactor in retaining clients--is the partners' keen ability toassess market conditions and help owners in settingreserve prices. "We are pretty good in giving clients advice at thesales on what their horse is likely to make going intothe ring," Mead said. Cont. p17

"We get occasional requests from clients to givethem a sale price some weeks or even months ahead ofa sale. We generally decline to put our heads on thechopping block for that one. But I think after we'veshown a horse for 48 hours to all the prospectivebuyers, we can give good advice on how the horse hasbeen received, what his likely sale price will be andtherefore where the client should set the reserve. As aresult, we have a pretty reasonable clearance ratebased on the reserve price we give the client." Castlebridge will enter the Tattersalls October sale offthe high of selling the top-priced yearling at theTattersalls Ireland September sale, a colt by TwirlingCandy from the family of multiple Group 1 winnerBigstone (Ire) (Last Tycoon {Ire}). Ross Doyle signedthe i115,000 ticket on the Irish-bred colt, who justtwo months earlier had been bought by BlandfordBloodstock for $35,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Julyyearling sale in Lexington. In looking forward toTattersalls October, Mead said the Castlebridgepartners view the European market as "continuing to berobust and still containing a fair bit of genuine optimismfor the immediate future." Some of the intriguingCastlebridge entries in Book 1 of the Tattersalls Octoberyearling sale include lot 157, a colt by Sea The Starsout of Alizaya (Ire) (Highest Honor {Fr}), a half sister toG1 Irish St Leger and G1 Prix du Cadran winner Alandi(Ire) (Galileo). This filly's seconddam is champion Durtal (Ire) (Lyphard), a half-sister toFrench Horse of the Year and G1 Prix de l'Arc deTriomphe winner Detroit (Fr) (Riverman) and granddamof G1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Roderic O'Connor (Ire)(Galileo); lot 330, a bay colt by Galileo out of stakeswinner and G1 Irish Oaks runner-up Ice Queen (Ire)(Danehill Dancer) and from the family of champion andsire Last Tycoon (Ire) (Try My Best); lot 365, a colt byGalileo out of prolific producer Lady Icarus (GB)(Rainbow Quest), the dam of four stakes winnersincluding French Classic-placed colt Furner's Green (Ire)(Dylan Thomas {Ire}) and Irish Classic-placed filly LadyLupus (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}); lot 424, a colt byShamardal out of G1 Irish 1000 Guineas winnerNightime (Ire) (Galileo) and a half-brother tostakes-placed Sleeping Beauty (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}).

Newsells Has a Date With Destiny at Tatts...By Emma Berry For slightly less than 24 hours last October, NewsellsPark Stud held the record for the most expensiveyearling sold at public auction in Europe when itsGalileo (Ire) colt out of Shastye (Ire) (Danehill) sold for3.6 million guineas to MV Magnier. That record would be smashed the next eveningwhen Lodge Park Stud's Galileo filly, now named AlNaamah (Ire), sold for 5 million guineas, but NewsellsPark's general manger Julian Dollar reflected, "It was a

nice thing to achieve, evenif we only held the recordfor a split second." The sale of onehigh-priced yearling mayfleetingly grab theheadlines, but in thebloodstock industry, as inlife, reputations are earnedthrough consistency ofservice, and with draftsfrom Andreas Jacobs'Newsells Park Stud at anyof Europe's major yearlingsales, that consistency isin the quality of horse onoffer. The Royston-basedoperation led all consignors

during Book 1 last year, selling 16 yearlings for a totalof 7,215,000gns and average price of 450,938gns, andit will bring 19 to the market for this year's three-dayelite auction. Among those catalogued are a few rare jewels, andnone more so than the first foal of George Washington(Ire)=s only foal, Date With Destiny (Ire), who sells onthe second day of Book 1 as lot 261. "I try not to think of her as anything different, otherthan the fact that she's by Galileo, who is the beststallion out there," said Dollar. "Obviously there's beenplenty of interest because it's Date With Destiny butwe bought her because she's from a family which hasbeen really good to Newsells Park Stud." Date WithDestiny's half-sisterFlawly (GB) (Old Vic{GB}) is the dam ofthree Newsells ParkStud-bred stakeswinners--Best Name(GB) (King's Best),February Sun (GB)(Monsun {Ger}) andHeirloom (GB)(Dansili {GB})--allsix-figure yearlings before their successful antics on thetrack. Dollar added, "Flawly has been terrific for us andwe're lucky that Date With Destiny's yearling is a lovelyfilly--she's beautiful to look at and she has a good brainon her. She's pretty encouraging as a first foal."

Tattersalls October cont. While she would make a potentially first-ratefoundation mare for aspiring owner/breeders, twomembers of the draft who have obvious appeal asfuture stallion prospects are lots 101 and 326, sons, respectively, of two late and lamented stallions in

Monsun (Ger) andMontjeu (Ire), whosefinal crop of yearlingsare offered this year. "We're selling theMonsun colt for [sisterstud] Gestut Fahrhofand obviously we hopehe'll be popular in Book1--he's a lovely horsefrom a good family,"said Dollar of lot 101,the only Monsunyearling in thecatalogue and a son of

Tu Eres Mi Amore (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), a full-sister toSequoyah (Ire), whose young son Henrythenavigatorhas made a promising start at stud. On the final day of Book 1, the Montjeu colt out ofHonorlina (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) will go under the hammerrepresenting a former Lagardere family that includesClassic hero Vahorimix (Fr), GI Bredeers' Cup Milewinner Val Royal (Fr) and G1 Irish St Leger winner andG1 Melbourne Cup entrant Voleuse De Coeurs (Ire). "He's out of a sister to a French Guineas winner andthere are only a few of these left," said Dollar. "There'sthe rarity value, of course, but he's also a properhorse." G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Mail The Desert (Ire)(Desert Prince {Ire}) enjoyed a timely pedigree updatewhen her juvenile son Desert Force (GB), by NewsellsPark's freshman stallion Equiano (Fr), made all to win aNewbury maiden in impressive fashion last week, andher Pivotal colt is scheduled to sell as lot 385 on theThursday of Book 1. A full-brother to multiple winnersAl Muthanaa (GB) and Mail Princess (GB), he isdescribed by Dollar as "an unbelievable looking horse, big and imposing with an incredibly athletic walk".He is not the only yearling in the draft to boast a Group1-winning dam, as Newsells Park will also offer a coltby Cacique (GB) out of the G1 Prix de l'Opera winnerKinnaird (Ire) (Dr Devious {Ire}) (lot 354), as well as aGiant's Causeway filly out of the GI Beverly D. S. andGI Flower Bowl Invitational winner Dynaforce(Dynaformer) (lot 272). For the former, two extremelyexciting juveniles have added a sprinkling of extra spiceto the family over the last two seasons, with Kinnaird'sson Berkshire (GB) (Mount Nelson {GB}) having landedthe 2013 Chesham S. at Royal Ascot, while his winninghalf-sister Keenes Royal (GB) (Red Ransom) is the damof the unbeaten dual Group 2 winner and early 2000Guineas favorite Ivawood (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}). "Kinnaird was just starting off in 2006 when I joinedthe stud and she didn't seem to get any credit for herwin in the Prix de l'Opera," recalled Dollar.

AIt was the same for her offspring--we took KeenesRoyale to the sales and nobody liked her. But then[Kinnaird=s group-winning half-brother] Mickdaam camealong and was a decent horse and Berkshire wonbrilliantly at Royal Ascot. The pedigree has really comealive with Ivawood this year." Unusually, Newsells Park will also be offering anon-homebred yearling when it consigns lot 446, afull-sister to crack sprinter Deacon Blues (GB) (ComptonPlace {GB}) on behalf of breeders Ken and ElizabethGrundy and Peter and Jan Hopper. A 2-year-old Equiano half-brother to the pair, namedThe Tin Man (GB), is in training with Deacon Blues'handler James Fanshawe and holds an entry for theTattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy Oct. 4, while theyearling filly looks to be another potentially speedymember of the family with "strong hindquarters, a realsprinter type". Though Dollar is not holding his breath in anticipationof breaking more October Sale records this year, he andhis team go there full of confidence in a solid draft ofhorses. He said, "Looking at the results from KeenelandSeptember, the market remains strong and I expectTattersalls to be every bit as strong as it was last year,if not more so."

Plus 10 Offers Buyer Incentives... By Emma Berry Over the last few years, several 'self-help' incentiveschemes have been introduced at bloodstock sales inorder to stimulate demand for British and Irish yearlingsfollowing the slump intrade caused byrecession and overproduction. Opinionremains divided as tohow beneficial eachscheme has been, butone factor on whichmost people in theindustry agreed wasthe need for a singlescheme to replace theRacing Post Yearling Bonus Scheme and the BritishOwners and Breeders Incentive Scheme (BOBIS), whichhave been running in tandem for the last couple ofseasons. The former--which was open to any entrant ina yearling sale and required the vendor to make theinitial registration payment followed by another fromthe purchaser--rewarded the owner of the winner ofone of its maiden races across Europe with a single,10,000 (or equivalent) bonus. BOBIS was solely forthe offspring of British-based mares or stallions, andoffered bonuses of up to ,10,000 depending on theclass of the race, with the prize being split betweenowner (60%), breeder (30%) and jockey, trainer andstable staff (10%). Launched just prior to the start ofthe British yearling sales this August, the new ,5.5million Plus 10 Scheme builds on BOBIS with itsinclusion of the offspring of Irish-domiciled stallions andmares.

Cont. Funding still comes largely from owners and breederswith additional financial backing provided by the BritishHorseracing Authority, Horserace Betting Levy Board,Horse Racing Ireland, Goffs, Tattersalls and DBS.Eligible horses will be able to compete for 460 bonusraces for 2-year-olds in Britain and Ireland in 2015, witha planned expansion to 550 races for 2- and 3-year-oldsin 2016 once the other two schemes have been fullywound up. In common with BOBIS, there's no limit onthe number of bonuses each horse can win and theprizes are paid out on a sliding scale between owner, breeder, trainer, jockey and stable staff. Despite widespread calls for a single scheme, it's fairto say that Plus 10 has not been met with universalapproval, and in particular a number of large Irishconsignors have not registered their horses in thisinaugural year. The three-tier registration process--atfoal, yearling and 2-year-old stage, allowing for the factthat a significant number of horses are pinhooked asfoals and with the aim of rewarding the owners ofwinning horses at various stages in their lives--hascaused some confusion, while the launch of thescheme so close to the DBS Premier Sales and SilverSales meant that the logos for eligible horses wereunable to be printed in the catalogues. At the recent two-day select section of theTattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, horseseligible for Plus 10 races accounted for i2,055,000 ofthe total aggregate of i7,427,000, but the take-upappears to be higher for the Tattersalls October Sale inNewmarket, with 336 of 472 lots in Book 1 alreadyregistered, as well as 531 of 828 Book 2 yearlings and329 of 590 in Book 3. Plus 10 was also given a significant boost at itslaunch when it was revealed that Darley had registeredmore than 300 foals for the scheme. SheikhMohammed's bloodstock advisor John Ferguson said atthe time, "We believe Plus 10 will positively impactbreeders large and small due to the incentive it offerspeople to invest in British and Irish bloodstock and byrewarding those who opt to race locally. As a mark ofour support, Darley has registered 332 foals into thebonus scheme, ensuring our clients have theopportunity to enhance their racing returns."Buyers of yearlings this year should be aware that aPlus 10-eligible horse may have only been signed up forthe initial foal stage. Different colored rump stickers atthe sales (blue for foal stage and yellow for foal andyearling stage) denote each horse's level of eligibility, and those yearlings currently only eligible to the firststage can be signed up as yearlings by the new ownerup to Dec. 15. For those horses whose breeders havealready paid ,150 or i187.50 for the initial (foal stage)registration, yearling registration costs ,200 or i250,with a final payment of ,350 or i437.50 required byMar. 31, 2015.
