MAE 455 Computer-Aided Design and Drafting Assignment 2: Create a Parametric Model Assignment Objectives • Control the shape of a part using engineering parameters and equations. • Understand limits to how much shapes can be changed. • Learn to use the SolidWorks equation editor. • Create a drawing. Lab Tasks 1. Choose what kind of part you would like to model: piston, cylinder, container, duct, shaft, beam, gear, or other part whose dimensions depend mostly on an engineering analysis. The part must have at least 5 features and must be modeled realistically. 2. Create the solid model of the part. Name the file(s) with what the object is and your name. Build on reference geometry as much as possible. 3. Use the equation editor to establish at least three engineering input parameters: capacity (e.g. pressure, power, load), material strength (yield or ultimate) and factor of safety. Feel free to use others as well. 4. Use engineering equations to control key part dimensions from the input parameters. 5. Determine how large or small one of the input parameters can be made if the solid model is to remain valid (without warnings or errors). Add comments after the parameter expressions to specify these limits. 6. Change the colors of faces or solids, if necessary, to convey the design information. 7. Create a drawing of the part including all important views and dimensions. 8. Submit the solid model and drawing files in eCampus. Notes: The part(s) must be modeled realistically including all fillets, bolt holes, etc. Bonus marks will be given for complexity and how accurately your solid models represent the real parts. It is very important that your part be valid for all input parameter changes. All wireframe sketches must be fully constrained. All part updates must be free of warnings and errors. Be sure there is no confusion over units. Add comments to the expressions if necessary. Due date: Thursday, October 15.
