Education Seminars (continued from page 1)

Our keynote speaker, Rob Grede (we’ve found an Irishman!) is the founder of The Grede Company, a consulting firm for start-ups and Fortune 500 companies that specializes in busi-ness planning and strategic growth. Rob is also an inventor, author, public speaker, and Marquette University Professor. Rob will show us how to put some green in our bank accounts by sharing with us five key strategies to attract new custom-ers and grow our businesses. Rob will discuss how to “farm” existing customers for more sales, how to sell intangibles, how to generate ideas for new products, where to “hunt” for new customers and why mergers can work for small businesses, too.

Three registration options are available for the day:

♦ full registration including two workshops plus dinner and keynote presentation

♦ workshop registration only

♦ dinner and keynote registration only

For more details and to register, visit the MAF Web site at www.madadfed.com. The registration deadline is March 12th.

MAF April Student Event The Student Outreach Committee of the Education Com-mittee, including Jenny Malueg, Career Services Spe-cialist of Herzing College, needs your help. We’re plan-ning an outreach event for Madison area college students majoring in journalism, marketing communications and graphic design at the Pyle Center on Tuesday, April 1st from 6-8pm. The Pyle Center is located at 702 Langdon Street, near the Red Gym.

Volunteers are needed to speak with students and an-swers questions about various careers in advertising. We’ll be dividing groups up between the “creatives” and the “marketers” to concentrate the groups into their more specific areas of study. This will be a great oppor-tunity for you to get introduced to some of the bright new talent that will be graduating soon. This is also an excel-lent forum to announce internship opportunities with your company.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact Karen Tiedt (232-2300 or [email protected]) or Jenny Malueg (663-0853 or [email protected]).

Thanks to Jessika Kasten at the UW Alumni Foundation for being our hosts at The Pyle Center.

2008 Silver Medalist - Dick Zillman

Dick with the Culver’s.

Marcie Tomlinson

Our congratulations to Dick Zillman; the 2008 Silver Medal Award recipient. Dick began Zillman Advertis-ing (now Zillman Idea Design) back in 1977. He earned a BBA and MBA in Marketing from UW-Madison. Dick is a writer, broadcast producer and pretend designer, although he can barely trace. Zill-man’s client list has included serving such clients as General Electric, Sara Lee, Country Kitchen, Culver’s Frozen Custard, Henry Vilas Zoo, Aprilaire, Woller-sheim Winery and Pizza Pit Pizza. Dick also has a long-standing commitment to public service; includ-ing campaigns for drunk driving awareness, winter safety, fair housing, public transit as well as for arts groups, community causes and social services agen-cies. No wonder he’s this year’s SMA recipient.

President’s Article

I like the direction of ADDYs this year with everything up…entries up, attendance up,

fun quotient up, venue approval up, student involvement up. If you were there you know

a lot of people stayed around after the event networking and getting a closer look at the

winners.

Also at ADDYs, Dick Zillman received the Silver Medal Award. It was appropriate

that he received the award at ADDYs, because his work has won best of show numerous

times in the past. The people who came to wish Dick well were some of the best known

marketers in the business: Craig Culver and Billy Nahn and past silver medal winners

like Marsha Lindsay, Peter Mortenson, Mike and Annette Knapstein. My own personal

opinion about Dick is that if you wrote the history of advertising in Madison, he’d get a

whole chapter.

We know the show is attractive to the media as we get stories every year about the

show and the Silver Medal winner. I believe next year the show will be even bigger.

There’ll be more changes in the event nationally including enhanced judging. Maybe

the best thing is that like the advertising business, the ADDYs are evolving. Given all

the good minds in advertising working on making ADDYs better, we’re sure to hit the

mark.

Don’t forget about the March 17th seminar series. This has always been a favorite

event in the club year for me. It is the perfect event to underscore the club’s focus on

professional development of our members. Take a couple of hours out of your week and

learn something new. And even if you know everything, it is nice to be reminded.

Learning is a life-long process.

Bill Kennedy

2007-08 MAF President

Ad 2 at the Addy’s. Ad 2 is ecstatic to announce that we took home a Silver ADDY at the award show this year in the Mixed/Multiple Media Campaign category for our work on the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute ‘Change the Numbers, Change the Community.’ campaign.

Strengthening the UW Bond. On January 23, over 40 Ad 2 Madison members and guests over-took the Kohl Center. The crowd looked at three primary strategies used to strengthen connections with UW fans: fan direct, customer service and satisfaction, and “generation next.”

After the presentation, the giddy group took a behind-the-scenes tour of the Kohl Center, which included stops at the new strength and conditioning center, the post-game press center, green rooms for performers on concert nights, and the booth where the media watches the events.

Toast 2 Tuesday. In March, our Toast 2 Tuesday monthly happy hours will continue at Evo Vino Wine Bar and Bistro. On the 11th members and non-members alike are invited to gather from 5:30-7pm at Eno Vino which is located at 601 Junction Rd. This event is free of charge, not counting your own cost of drinks, of course.

SAVE-THE-DATE AD2 HYPE: Cocktail Party & Silent Auction. Friday, May 9th, 2008. The Madison Club - 5 East Wilson.

ADDY Awards Book: Did you see the beautiful awards book? Now you can really See what won an award. Yes, that’s correct, each entry has been photographed. Copies will be available at the ADDY Gallery Opening Reception. The cost is $25. If you can’t make the Gallery Opening Reception, books can be picked up at Extra Bold Port-folio School (121 S. Pinckney Street) or by calling the office at 831-9242. A listing of all the winners is available on our web site, www.madadfed.com. Check it out.

ADDY Gallery: Join us at the Opening Reception for the ADDY Gallery at Extra Bold Portfolio School on Friday, March 7. The reception is FREE!! The hours are 4 – 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come to view the winning Best of Show, Best of Category and Judge’s Choice awards which have been framed for this viewing. If you are not available for the reception, the gallery will be available during the month of March. Thanks to Fauerbach Brewery for providing beverages for the reception.

These are just a few photos from the year’s ADDYs Show which was held at The Overture Center. The Silver Medal Award reception for Dick Zillman was held in the lobby of the Capitol Theater and the show in the Capital Theater. This we have had almost one hundred more entries than last year and we were forced to use the balcony in the theater to provide enough seating for the show. Immediately after the Show, we moved up to the Promenade Ter-race where the winning work was on display and there were plenty of appetizers and desserts. It was a great at-mosphere for mingling.

Thank you to everyone who entered, who came to the show and showed their support for our advertising competi-tion. We’re looking forward to the District ADDYs and then the National Competition...here’s hoping that we have many winners in both competitions. It’s not too early to start pulling together your work for next year’s competition. We’ll also be putting together the ADDY Committee for next year, so now is the time to step up and volunteer to be a part of it.
