EDITORIAL

For every created thing there is acentre. The centre of the solarsystem is the Sun. The centre forhuman beings is the heart. Thecentre of vehicles is the engine.Likewise the Kaaba is the centrefor all Muslims. All Muslimswhether in the North, South, Eastor West face towards thiscentre point whenworshipping Allah (s.w.t).Muslims from all over theworld converge to this centrepoint during the annual Hajjpilgrimage. If there would be noKaaba the Muslims wouldbecome directionless and wouldbecome unable to offer prayers.Almighty Allah has in his infinitemercy and excellent wisdom laidout all the signs of recognition ofthe truth. Therefore no one onthe Day of Judgment can claimignorance. Five times a day everyMuslim in the World faces theKaaba while praying and thus thequestion as to why Allah decidedthat the birth of the greatestpersonality of Islam should takeplace inside the Kaaba cannotescape the attention and heart ofany person. The 13th of Rajab marks the“birth of a most precious pearlin the courtyard of Kaabaglowing in its full self-illumination. It was a portion ofthe very divine light of God“that appeared in the humanshape and form, andcommenced to shine on thehighest of the human stages ofdignity and reverence. To beborn in Bait Allah (House of Allah:Kaaba), is an extraordinary

“Rajab is the month for seeking forgiveness, so seek forgiveness from Allah (swt)”.

Holy Prophet (s.a.w.w.)

privilege bestowed only uponImam Ali (A.S). Allah has in a verypractical manner revealed that justas Kaaba is the centre of Muslims;Imam Ali (a.s) is the centre of Islamand the believers (momins). ImamAli (a.s) is the soul of Islam. Whensoul is taken out from the body

that person becomes lifeless anddies; similarly if Imam Ali (a.s) isremoved from Islam, the religionof Allah becomes lifeless and dead:At the beginning of his mission thefirst call by the Holy Prophet (s.a.w)for a helper was at Da’wat zulAsheera. The Prophet was metby silence; no one was preparedto help our Prophet and shoulderthe responsibility of the mission. Itwas Imam Ali who stood up andpledged to help the Prophet in hisministry. What if Imam Ali had notbeen there? The Prophets missionwould not have progressed due tolack of a minister. Just as the staffof Prophet Musa (A.S) is nothingwithout Musa; just as we cannottalk about the ark without ProphetNuh (A.S); similarly we cannot talkabout the night of Hijra withoutImam Ali. No one would have sleptin place of Ali on the bed of theProphet. Again the battles of Badr,Ohud, Khandaq and Khaibarcannot be mentioned without Ali.If omitting Ali’s name whenmentioning about the verses ofSurah Bar’aat or removing thename of Ali when breaking the idolsduring the conquest of Makkah isdiscussed or the bed of holy

Prophet is left unoccupied becauseAli is not there; then By God! Whatis left in Islam? Mowla Ali is MowlaAli. If Imam Ali is removed fromthe various important occasions inIslam, then Islam becomesnothing. Thus Ali is the centre ofIslam and Momineen. Another very

important point not to beoverlooked is that the greatesthouse among mankind is thehouse of the Holy Prophet.

The Prophet had a daughter: BibiFatima Zahra (S.A) who wouldhave to marry an excellent husbandin the future. The only house exaltedin rank above the Holy Prophet’swas the house of Allah (Kaaba). Therefore Allah decided that thebirth of Imam Ali take place in HolyKaaba. Only the one born in theHouse of Allah can be a match fora daughter born in the house ofthe Holy Prophet (s.a.w).Another important messageand sign by Almighty Allah is thatnot any one can represent theProphet and religion of Allah.Only the chosen one born in theKaaba and his excellent sonscan represent the Holy Prophetand religion of Allah (s.w.t).How excellent is the wonderfuland awe inspiring wisdom ofAllah. And how excellent is ImamAli the wonderful lion of Allah. The Urdu poet has beautifully said:Rab ne Ghadeer mien jiseMoula banaa diyaUmmat ne baad mein usaychawtha banaa diyaAnmol sil aa detaa haiHubb-e-Ali ka RabAli ke Zachaa Khane koQibla banaa diya

Why Imam Ali a.s. was born in Holy Kaaba?

The Voice of Human JusticeIf you lend ear to the history ofthe world you will hear the newsof a great event the like of whichhas not happened even after apassage of more than tencenturies. If you reflect carefullyabout the various happenings inthe world you will be fascinatedby a grand personality beforewhose high thinking everythingappears to be trivial. The worldand its life, and the children, thekinsmen, wealth and rulershipdo not enjoy any importancein his eyes. This personality is too treat tobe placed in the row of ordinarypeople and his insight is so keenthat it resembles the reasoningof common people only inname. If you hear with the ears of yourheart, history will narrate to youthat story of the martyrs in thepath of truth and justice withwhose blood the border of thesky is covered. If you look atthe horizon you will observetwo kinds of redness; one thenatural redness and the otherthat of the blood of the martyrsin the path of truth and justice.Have a look at the history ofthe East and find out that greatpower of comprehension andunderstanding which is thecentre of every circle of highthinking, and the origin of everytrue reasoning and logic everymodern research and new ideaabout the like of this world andthe Hereafter is related to him.The opinions which may havecome to your notice with regardto human system and laws, principles of civilization and rulesof morality has originated fromthis spring. These rules and

principles are based on themutual relations, co-operationand partnership of humanity.Which reflective power (In factthe knowledge of Ali should notbe treated to be the outcomeof reflection because it wasderived from divine inspirationand was communicated to hisheart through the prophet. Theknowledge which waspossessed by him or even asmall part thereof cannot beacquired by reflection andreasoning however profoundand extraordinary it may be)has invented a new policy anda new method in philosophyand placed it at the disposal ofthe people who have passed iton to the posterity? Everyonehas benefited from it accordingto his understanding, but nonehas so far reached its realphilosophy and its depth. It isnecessary that other brains andintellects should make newdiscoveries from what he hassaid.Who is that enlightenedperson who himself is involvedin suffering and pains but othersare blessed and happy becauseof him? He who has preparedand continues to prepare thepath for his friends as well asenemies! A scholar who isprepared whole-heartedly toexplain things for others afterdiscussing the cause and effectof everything!Who is that subtle scholar whohas pondered over everythingand there is nothing aboutwhich he is not well-informed?So much so that he knows eventhose things which the peoplehave not done but have onlythought about them. Hepossesses such a powerful

intellect that the knowledgewhich appeared in the East afterhim is also associated with him;in fact it is he who is thefoundation and the fountain-head of all such sciences.Have you every observed soperfect an intellect as shouldhave recognized the greatestreality? And the reality is thebasis for social relations, thecause for everyone pursuing hisown particular path. It tells whyone group follows the right pathand the other wrong path. This real ity which wasunderstood by Ali thirteenhundred years ago has beenmade the new subject ofdiscussion by the scholars ofthe East and the West. By thisI mean the need for thenecessities of life, to acquirewhich the people are followingdifferent path. One group hastransgressed its limits. It hasignored the rules of justice andis endeavouring to mislead thepeople. In order to achievetheir nefarious ends deceptionis being practiced and illogicalthings are being spread by thecapital ists to accumulatewealth, by governmentofficers to get things donegratis and to keep the massesunder control and by theinnovators to collect obedientfollowers.Do you recognize that greatsage who established morethan a thousand years ago areality which supersededthousands of superstitions andextravagant ideas and said: “Ifa person starves it is due to thefact that his share has beentaken by another” and added:

Anecdotes for Reflection(Part-1)

Years after the incident whenthe brothers of Yusuf (a.s.) haddeceptively taken him outsidethe city, beaten him and flunghim into the well thereby forcingtheir father into perpetualweeping and anguish over hisloss, the brothers heard thatYusuf had become the king ofMisr. They and their father wentto meet him.The very first sentence whichYusuf (a.s.) uttered upon seeingthem, was: And He wasindeed kind to me when Hetook me out of the prison.(Holy Qur’an, ch. Yusuf (12),vs, 100).Apparently, it was out ofcourtesy that Yusuf (a.s.)desisted from mentioning thetroubles he had experienced;first being flung into the well, then his subsequent slavery andthen unpleasant incidents, whichhe had to endure due to theacts of his brothers. He did notwish to revive those bittermemories, which would causethem to experiencemortification andembarrassment. He then added, “It was Shaitanwho incited my brothers tocommit those inappropriatedeeds towards me, hurling meinto the well and separating mefrom my father; however, theGlorious God exhibited kindnesstowards me in that he madethose very acts a means forgranting eminence andreverence to our family!”Attributing the unjust acts of hisbrothers to Shaytan andregarding him as the primeculprit for the crimes of hisbrothers, was another example

of Yusuf’s (a.s.) magnanimity. He thus shielded them fromembarrassment and left themwith an opportunity toapologize for their deeds. He said:“There shall be no reproofagainst you, (from) thisday. (Holy Qur’an, ch. Yusuf(12), vs. 92). You can restassured with respect to me,for I have forgiven you andchosen to disregard all thathas happened previously, andon behalf of God too, I cangive you this good news andseek from Him that Allahmay forgive you and He is

Yusuf (a.s.) and his Brothersthe Most Merciful of themerciful. (Ibid, vs. 92).“Surely he who guards(against evil) and is patient(is rewarded) was surelyAllah does not waste thereward of those who dogood.” (Ibid, vs. 90, Taareekh-e-Anbiya, pg. 334-347)Author’s note: The lesson, whichHazrat Yusuf (a.s.) taughteveryone, was that ofexhibiting kindness andbeneficence in response to evilbehaviour, and hopefully, we toocan conduct ourselves in thesame manner with respect toour brethren-in-faith, Inshaallah.

Ø A person who recites tenunits (Rak’at) of Namaz onthe 1st of Rajab such that inevery Rak’at after Surah al-Hamd recites three timesSurah-at-Tawheed, will besaved from the squeeze in thegrave. To recite twentyRaka’at Namaz on the night of1st Rajab, such that in everyRak’at after Surah-al-Hamdrecite once Surah-at-Tawheedis beneficial to save oneselffrom the punishment in thegrave.Ø To fast for four days in themonth of Rajab or twelvedays in the month of Sha’banis also beneficial.Ø To recite thirty Rak’atNamaz in the middle part ofthe month of Rajab, such thatin each Rak’at after Surah-al-Hamd recite ten times Surah-al-Tawheed is beneficial toward off punishment in thegrave. In the same manner to

recite the above Namaz onthe night of 16th and 17thRajab and the 1st of Sha’banis also beneficial. On the nightof the 1st of Sha’ban to recite100 Rak’at Namaz, such thatin each Rak’at after Surah-al-Hamd recite once Surah-atTawheed, after ending theNamaz recite fifty times Surahat-Tawheed. On the night of24th Sha’ban recite onehundred Rak’at Namaz, suchthat in each Rak’at afterSurah-al-Hamd recite tentimes Surah-an-Nasr. Also torecite fifty Rak’at Namaz suchthat in each Rak’at afterSurah-al-Hamd recite fiftytimes Surah-at-Tawheed, fiftytimes Surah-al-Falaq, and 50times Surah-an-Naas savesone from the punishment inthe grave. Know your IslamHazrat Ali (a.s.) was the cousinof our Holy Prophet (s.a.). Hewas born on Friday, the 13th

Rajab in the Kaaba. Providencealone had a hand in bringing hismother towards Kaaba. When hismother came to Kaaba, she feltweighed down byintense pain ofpregnancy. She kneltdown before the Holystructure and prayedhumbly to God.Abbas, son of AbdulMuttalib (a.s.), sawHazrat Ali’s (a.s.)mother praying toGod. No sooner hadshe raised her headfrom supplication, then the wall of thesacred House split bya solemn miracle.Fatima entered theKaaba and thatportion returned to itsnormal position.Abbas and hiscompanions flocked at the gateof the Sacred House which waslocked, and tried to open it, butin vain. They then decided to giveit up, considering the miraculousnature of the event and theDivine will in action. The news ofthis miraculous incident soonspread like wildfire in Mecca.Hazrat Ali (a.s.) was born withinthe Kaaba with his eyes closedand his body in humbleprostration before the Almighty.Fatima stayed in Kaaba for threedays and as the fourth dayapproached she stepped out, carrying her gem in her arms. Toher great surprise, she found the

Holy Prophet awaiting to receivethe newly-born child in hisanxious arms. Imamat feelingthe subtle touch of Prophethood,Hazrat Ali (a.s.) opened his eyesand saluted the Divine Prophet“Assalamo Alaika Ya rasoolallah(Peace be upon you, O

Messenger of Allah).”Hazrat Ali’s (a.s.)birth in the Kaaba is unique in thehistory of the world Neither aProphet (s.a.) nor a Divine Saint wasever blessed with such an honour. He was brought up under thecare and affection of the HolyProphet (s.a.). As Hazrat Ali(a.s.) says: “The Holy Prophet(s.a.) brought me up in his ownarms and fed me with his ownmorsel. I followed him whereverhe went like a baby camelfollowing its mother. Each day anew aspect of his characterwould beam out of his nobleperson and I would accept it and

follow it as a command.” (Nahj-ul-Balagha).Ten years in the company of theHoly Prophet (s.a.) had kept himso close and inseparable, that hewas one with him in character, knowledge, self-sacrifice,forbearance, bravery, kindness,

g e n e r o s i t y ,oratory andeloquence. Fromhis very infancy,he prostratedbefore God alongwith the HolyProphet (s.a.). Ashe himself said, “Iwas the first topray to Godalong withtheHoly Prophet.”“Hazrat Ali (a.s.)persevered inthe footsteps ofthe Holy Prophet(s.a.),” saysAllama Masoodi,“all along hischildhood.” God

created him pure and holy andkept him steadfast on the rightpath. Though Hazrat Ali (a.s.) isundisputably the first to embraceIslam when the Holy Prophet(s.a.)called upon his listeners todo so, yet by the very fact thatsince his infancy he was broughtup with the Holy Prophet (s.a.)and followed him in every actionand deed including prostrationbefore God, he can be said to beborn a Muslim.Hazrat Ali (a.s.), at all times, accompanied the Holy Prophet(s.a.) to help and protect himfrom his enemies. 13th Rajab:The Birth Anniversary of Mawlood-e-Kaaba

Imam Ali (A.S.), the First Muslim, an intimate associate of the HolyProphet (S.A.W.) in the life and the holy Islamic mission, the ImmediateSuccessor to the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) and the First Holy ImmaculateImam of the Shi’ites in the World, Imam Ali ibn Abu Taleb(A.S.) was

born inside the Holy Kaaba at Makkah on Friday, the 13th day of Rajab,600 A.D. It is an undisputed fact that Imam Ali (A.S.) is the only unique

personality in the world who was born in the Holy Kaaba and wasmartyred in the Kufah Mosque and was buried in the holy city of Najaf-e-

Ashraf ( Iraq ).Regarding divine right of Imam Ali (A.S.) the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)

declared:”Whomsoever I have authority over; Ali (A.S.) has also authority

over him, O Allah! Befriend whoever befriend him and be hostile towhosoever is hostile to him”.

On the Happy and Joyous Occasion of the Birthday Anniversary ofImam Ali (A.S.) we extend our Felicitations and Greetings to the

Our fifth Imam MohammadBaqir (A.S.) was born on the1st of the month of Rajab, 57thHijrah, in the city of Madina.Because of the resemblance thathe had with his grandfather hewas named Mohammad andbecause of it that he analyzedthe knowledge and mademanifest its secrets he becameknown with the title of “Baqir”.His father was Hazrat Sajjad(A.S.) and motherFatimah who was oneof the daughters ofImam Hassan (A.S.).He was the first Imam(A.S.) whose lineageascended and reached theProphet (P.B.U.H.) both fromthe paternal and maternal sides. His life history can be dividedinto two parts.1. The period before hisImamate which is nearly 35years and was the peaceful partof his life, led in Madina.2. The Period of Imamate, which stretched, up to twentyyears and is counted as theduration of the propagation anddissemination of Islamicknowledge and wisdom.Imam Mohammad Baqir alwaysput on new and clean dress. Heperfumed himself and walkedvery comfortably, slowly andsteadily. One day, some narrowminded ones criticized him sayingyour grandfather Ali (A.S.) usedold and cheap clothes so why doyou put on clean and new ones?He replied, since in those days allthe people were poor Ali (A.S.)ought to have used old clothesand simple food. But today thepeople are leading their lives incomfort and luxury; hence, Ishould not use those clothes. Theact of my grandfather in those

days, was according to justice andleadership and my action and wayof life today is also in accordanceto the (norms of) Justice andleadership.About his manners and training,it is written that he never laughedloudly and always spoke in a calmand respectable way. He neverbecame furious and enraged andwith whosoever he met he wouldgive him respect and shook hands

with him and said, “this act(shaking hands) brings the heartsclose to each other and puts anend to the enmities and hostilities.”You may call it a coincidence ora special arrangement fromAllah(swt) that ImamMuhammad Baqir(a.s.) is thefifth Holy Imam and the seventhMasoom (infallible) and his yearof birth was 57 A.H. and his agewas 57 years as well. Also heis the first Imam whose namewas Muhammad (a.s.) - thesame as that of his grand-fatherProphet Muhammad(sawaw).Imam Mohammad Baqir(a.s.)gave some very informativeanswers to some of the mostdifficult questions to his disciplesand others.  Some of them arereproduced here:Question: Which was the Roza(fasting) in which eating anddrinking was permitted?Answer: The Roza (fast) thatHazrat Mariam(a.s.) observed inwhich she abandoned talking only.Question: What decreases andnever increases with time?Answer: AgeQuestion: What increases and

never decreases?Answer: Water of the ocean.Question: What was raised inthe sky only once?Answer: The mountain of Toorwhich was raised above Bani-Israelonly once and then put down.Question: Who are the peoplewhose true testimony wasdeclared a lie?Answer: These are themunafiqeen (hypocrites) whose

testimony that“Prophet is themessenger of God”was not acceptedand they weredeclared liers by

Allah(swt).Question: When was one thirdof the mankind killed?Answer: Never – however onefourth of mankind was killedwhen Qabeel murdered Habeel. At that time, the whole mankindconsisted of 4 persons only.Question: You Muslims believethat the food and drinks ofJannah will not cause necessityto urinate and pass stool. Is thereany example of this in this world?Answer: Yes there is. The childinside the womb of the mothergets fed without the necesity tourinate or pass stool.Question: Who are the twopeople who were born at thesame time and died at thesame time but one was 50years and the other was 150years old at the time of death?Answer: These were Prophetbrothers Uzair(a.s.) andAziz(a.s.). Allah(swt) gavetemporary death to HazratUzair(a.s.) for 100 years andwhen he got back life, he diedagain at the same time as didAziz so the difference in theirages was 100 years.

On this occasion of happiness in the house of ProphetMohammad(sawaw), We extend felicitations and greetings toProphet Mohammad(sawaw), Imam-e-Zamana(a.s.), the Ahl-

e-Bait(a.s.) and to all the Momineen and Mominaat.

Social Justice in IslamIn the verse mentioned belowyou see how the Almighty Godwarns people of the divinediscipline in the Day after, wherethere will not be anycompensation or intercessionor any other alternative likewhat you see in some of ourcourts, but only the justfuldiscipline will be there.“Then guard yourselves againsta day, when one soul shall notavail another; nor shallcompensation be acceptedfrom her; nor shall intercessionprofit her, nor shall anyone behelped from outside.” (Al-Baqarah : Verse 123).Justice in Islam is a twin to thedivine teachings which makemankind aware of every pointand make him fight for his rightsand stop greediness oraggressing rights of others. That undoubtedly saves his life, properties and guarantees himhappiest life.If people follow the divineteachings, justice will becommon among the societiesand you will never see unhappyindividuals in the Islamicsocieties.Because of different ideas, manners, evil wishes andvarious characters, God alwayscommands people to follow Histeachings and warns His slavesof facing harmful life. The HolyQuran says:“O, ye who believe! Stand outfirmly for God as witnesses tofair dealing and let not thehatred of others to you makeyou swerve to wrong and departfrom justice. But just: That isnext to piety: and fear God, forGod is well-acquainted with all

that ye do.” (Ch. Al-ma edahVerse 9.)There is no other alternativethat solves the problems ofmankind than the divineteachings and this is why theHoly Quran emphasizes onfollowing the commands ofGod. If you pay attention to theteachings mentioned in Verse(114 to 117) of Chapter Al-anam you certainly will becomeastonished of:“Say, Shall I seek for judgeother than God? When He, it iswho hath sent unto you theBook, explained in detail, Theyknow full well to whom we havegiven the Book, that it hathbeen sent down from they Lordin truth. Never be then of thosewho doubt.” (See Verse 114-Cha. Al-anam).It is quite wise to select the bestteachings which help for havingthe better aims that change thelife of people from badness togoodness, ad guide tohappiness. Pay attention to thefollowing verse plase:“The word of the Lord doth findits fulfillment in truth and injustice: None can change Hiswords: for He is the one whohearth and knoweth all.” (SeeVerse 115-Chp. Al-anam).There is no other book whichcan guide you to the happiestlife which is full of justice. TheHoly Quran says in this fact:-“Wert thou to follow thecommon run of those on earththey will lead thee away fromthe way of God. They follownothing but conjecture; They donothing but lie.” (See Verse116-Chp. Al-anam).“Thy Lord Knoweth best whostrayeth from His way: He

knoweth best who they are thatreceive His guidance.” (SeeVerse 117-Chp. Al-anam).It is definitely illegal to acceptother than God’s judgments andthose who refuse the divinejudgments are certainly astray. If they call for the judgment ofthose who reject the divineteaching or those who followtheir own caprice, that meansthey are followers of satan. The right believers have tosolve their problems accordingto their own belief and neveraccept other judgment orteachings taken from the mindof mankind. If oneself forcesanother to accept the judgmentof Satan and the other facesharm, the reporter or forcer isresponsible about all the harm. There are too many peoplewho proclaim being goodbelievers but the truth is thatthey are more harmful to Islamthan non-believers. Such peopleare Muslims by tongue only. When you want to see whetherthey are true or liers, check thataccording to the traditionreported by the seventh infallibleImam, Mosa Al-Kazim (a.s)that says:“If you want to know whetheran individual is a Muslim or not, watch him at the time ofprayers call, or give him anamount of money.”If he directly quickens forworship when he hears theannouncement of prayer(Azan) that means he is aMuslim. And if he returns thetrust that means he fears thedivine discipline more than thediscipline that can be taken byfollowers of man. Otherwise

What Non-Muslims say about...Hazrat Ali (a.s.)

The Magnificence of HazratAli (a.s.)(Peace and Blessings be Upon him)Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (a.s.) wasthe son-in-law of the ProphetMuhammad (s.a.), peace beupon them both. This is acollection of short quotationsabout him from wide variety ofnotables belonging to otherfaiths, including academics, writers, philosophers, posts, politicians and activities.

(Dr. Henry Stubble)“He had a contempt of theworld, its glory and pomp, hefeared God much, gave manyalms,, was just in all his actions, humble and affable, of anexceeding quick wit and of aningenuity that was notcommon, he was exceedinglylearned not in those sciencesthat terminate in speculationsbut those which extend topractice.”{An account of the Rise andProgress of Mahometanism1705, p.83}.

(Greald de Gaury)(1897-1984)) A distinguishedsoldier and diplomat.“He had been wise in counsel andbrave in battle, true to his friendsand magnanimous to his foes. Hewas to be for ever the paragonof Muslim nobility and chivalry.”(Rulers of Mecca, London,1951. p. 49)

(Wilfred Madelung)Professor of Arabic at OxfordUniversity.“In fact of the fake Umayyad claimto legitimate sovereignty in Islamas God’s Vicegerents on earth, andin view of Umayyad treachery,

arbitrary and divisive government, and vindictive retribution, theycame to appreciate his honesty, his unbending devotion to thereign of Islam, his deep personalloyalties, his equal treatment of allhis supporters, and his generosityin forgiving his defeated enemies.”(The Succession of Muhammad(s.a.); a study of the EarlyCaliphate, Cambridge, 1997,pp. 309-310) (Charles Mills)(1788-1826) Leading historicalwriter of his time.“As the chief of the family ofHashem and as the cousin andson-in-law of him whom theArabians respected it isapparently wonderful that Aliwas not raised to the Caliphateimmediately on the death ofMohammad (s.a.). To theadvantages of his birth andmarriage was added thefriendship of the Prophet (s.a.).The son of Abu Talib (a.s.) wasone of the first converts toIslamism and Mohammad’s(s.a.0 favourite appellation ofhis was the Aaron of secondMoses. His talents as an orator, and his intrepidity as a warrior, were grateful to a nation inwhose judgement courage wasvirtue and eloquence waswisdom.”(An, history of Muhammedanism,London, 1818, p. 89)

(Thoms Carlyle)“As for this young Ali (a.s.), onecannot but like him. A nobleminded creature, as he showshimself, now and alwaysafterwards, full of affection, offiery daring. Somethingchivalrous in him; brave as a

lion; yet with a grace, a truthand affection worthy ofChristian knighthood.”(On Heroes, Hero-worship, Andthe Heroic in History, 1841),Lecture 2; The Hero as ProphetMahomet; Islam, May 8, 1840)

(Edward Gibbon)(1737-1794) Considered thegreatest British Historian of his time.“The zeal and virtue of Ali werenever outstripped by any recentproselyte. HE united thequalification of a poet, a soldier, and a saint; his wisdom stillbreathes in a collection of moraland religious sayings; and everyantagonist, in the combats of thetongue or of the sword, wassubdued by his eloquence andvalour. From the first hour of hismission to the last rites of hisfuneral, the apostle was notforsaken by a generous friend, whom he delighted to name hisbrother, his vicegerent, and thefaithful Aaron of a second Moses.”(The Decline and Fall of theRoman Empire, London, 1911,volume 5, pp. 381-2).

(Philip Khuri Hitti)(1886-1978) Professor of SemiticLanguages at Princeton University.“Valiant in battle, wise incounsel, eloquent in speech, true to his friends, magnanimous to his foes, hebecame both the paragon ofMuslim nobility and chivalry(futuwah) and the Solomon ofArabic tradition, around whosename poems, proverbs, sermonettes and anecdotesinnumerable have clustered.”(History of the Arabs,London, 1964. p. 183)

Al-TawhidThis kind of behaviour is usuallycaused by jealousy and enmity, although it may also be rootedin greed (hasad), avarice(tama), pride (takabbur), etc. Thus, its source is either thePower of Anger of the Powerof Passion, or both. In any case, harassment and insulting ofother Muslims is a major sin,and has been repeatedlycondemned both in Quranicverses and traditions:And those who hurt believingmen and believing women, without that they have earnedit, they bear the guilt of slanderand manifest sin. (33:58)And in a tradition attributed tothe Prophet (s.a.0 we read:Whoever hurts a believer, hurtsme; whoever hurts me, hurtsGod; and whoever hurts Godis the accursed of Torah, theGospel, the Psalms, and theQuran. (from Jami’al-akhbar)

Harassing and Insulting OthersOn the other hand, stoppedsomeone from harassing andinsulting others is worthy actpraised in several traditions, ofwhich the following prophetichadith is an example.Whoever removes an annoyinghurdle from the path of Muslims,God shall write for him a virtue, whose reward is Paradise.(Ihya’ ‘ulum al-din, vol. II, p.172)Frightening and BotheringMuslims: This kind of behaviouris a branch of the above-mentioned vice, and is causedby either anger, i l l-temperedness, or avarice. Itsopposite is making othershappy and removing their causeof sorrow or anxiety. There arenumerous traditions is praise ofthis virtue, such as the followingfrom the Prophet (s.a.):Indeed the most beloved actionnear God, the Almighty, is tomake the believers happy.

Anecdotes for Reflection(Part-1)

A’di, the son of the well-knownHaatim Taai, was one of thesincere and loyal companions ofAmirul Mu’mineen (a.s.). Fromthe years 10 A.H. when heaccepted Islam, A’di had alwaysremained in the service of theImam (a.s.), and had foughtalongside him in the battles ofJamal, Siffeen and Nahrawaan. In the battle of Jamal hesustained an injury to one of hiseyes as a result of which he losthis vision.Once he came to Mua’wiyah forsome purpose. Mua’wiyahasked him why he had notbrought his sons with him.

“They were killed while fightingalongside Amirul Mu’mineen(a.s.),” he replied.“Ali (a.s.) has not been just toyou, for he sent your sons tobe killed while he has kept hisown sons alive!” saidMua’wiyah.A’di retorted, “(On the contrary)I have not done justice to ‘Ali(a.s.) for he has been killed, whereas I am still alive. O’Mua’wiyah! Our rage towardsyou still smoulders in our hearts.Do know that (the pain of)having our throats slit or theagony of death is easier for usto bear than hearing badcomments about ‘Ali (a.s.).”(Ibid).

The Missing LinkAs quoted by Allamah SayyidAbd al-Hussayn Sharaf al-Din inhis book, The Right Path, page228, the Holy Prophet (s.a.)placed his hand on the neck ofAli (a.s.) as said:“This is the guide of therighteous and the slayer of theprofligate (the corrupt). He whohelps him is victorious and hewho abandons him is forsaken,”his voice rising to a higher pitchwhile uttering this’.The cohesion of the MuslimUmmah (nation) as an entityhinges on the LeadershipDivinely Conferred on ImamAli (a.s.) and his descendants. We have been warned by theHoly Prophet (s.a.) who, asquoted on p. 229 of the RightPath said:“Allah has informed me that ‘Ali(a.s.) is the flag of guidance, theImam of my friends and a lightfor those who are obedient tome; and he is the word which Ihave imposed upon the pious asduty.”The Wilaya Divinely conferred onImam Ali (a.s.) has beenbetrayed, abused and denied bymajority of Muslims. Accordingto this hadith, those who rejectthe Wilaya Divinely Conferred onImam Ali (a.s.), are not thefriends of the Holy Prophet(s.a.). They are not obedient tohim and have thus cutthemselves off from Divine light.Of what use is the life of a Muslimwithout Divine Light?Oppression and tyrannyexercised on believing Muslimsby “Muslims” are not new in theMuslim Ummah, for, they allstarted just after the departureof the Holy Prohpet (s.a.) from

this life, peace be upon him andhis progeny. The wave of evil-doing by unauthorized rulerswithin the Muslims body did noteven spare the Lady of Light-Fatima, Alaih Salam (a.s.), thedaughter of the Prophet aboutwhom the Holy Prophet (s.a.)said,“…Fatima (s.a.) is a part andparcel of me, whosoeverannoys her, annoys me andwhosoever annoys me, annoysAllah and whosoever annoysAllah is an infidel”.Yet she and her unborn son weremartyred, or in crudeterminology, assassinated by thesoldiers of Abu Bakr, the firstCaliph. Fatima’s (s.a.) husband,Imam Ali (a.s.), her children{Hasan (s.a.) and Husain (a.s.)}and the descendants of Husain(a.s.) were also martyred. Verymany other members of the HolyProphet’s (s.a.) family and theirfollowers were also martyred. They were not killed by externalenemies of Islam but by“Muslims” who envied the Ahlul-Bayt (a.s.) for the Wilaya-DivinelyConferred on them. The fact thatthe key members of the familyof the Holy Prophet (s.a.) andtheir supporters wereassassinated by political rulersand their supporters shows thatthe sinless members of theHousehold of the Holy Prophet(s.a.) were oppressed becauseof the Leadership Divinely ofGiven them. If this is not true letanyone tell what the crime of theAhlul-Bayt (a.s.) and the Shi’a is.The tyranny of these rulers hasmade them the objects ofworship instead of Allah (s.w.t.).They put on an outwardgarment of Islam within which

they commit heinous crimes ofhighest magnitudes againstIslam and Muslims. Forexample: before the Shah ofIran was finally overthrown, may peace be upon ImamKhomeini, he (Shah) wascompletely drenched in theblood of Muslims. The Whiterobe has not prevented theSaudi rulers from becoming thehabitual murderers of pilgrimsin and around the Ka’aba All thesame, the daily utterance of thedivine slogan ‘La ilaha Ila alahMuhammadar Rasul allah”has not stopped the tyrantsruling Egypt, Syria and thePersian Gulf monarchs fromarresting, torturing andhorrendous killings of thosebelieving Muslims who disagreewith them politically in the nameof Islam. If past and present history ofMuslims mean anything to us,majority of Muslims haveshown a strong willingness notto return to our roots. This is aphenomenon often exhibited inmany ways such asindifference, inaction or activeparticipation in activities quitedetrimental to Islam and thewell-being of Muslims.

Tafseer–e-QuranFurther clarification for name - Fateh-hattul-kitab.

Its because it always appears at the start of the Quran i.e. its always the opening Sura.By Late Hujjatul Islam Wal-Muslemeen Fakhrul Ulama Maulana Mirza Mohd.

Alim Saheb Qibla (T.S.)S a h a b - e - t a f s e e r - e - R a z icomments that Imam-e-Jafer-e-Sadiq (a.s.) has stated thatthe Garden or Heaven asmentioned in the above ayat isnot the Heaven which wenormally talk about. It was theHeaven of the earth and not“Jannat-e-Khuld”. There aretwo specialties of the Heaven(Jannat-e-Khuld) after death.1) any one entering Heaven willremain in it forever. 2) Evilcannot enter this heaven.Hence Imam says that thisGarden was a heaven of theearth where sun and moonwere rising and if this was“Jannat-e-Khuld”, Adam wouldnever come out of it. Sahab-e-Tafseer-e-Qummi states that if“The Garden” was Jannat-e-Khuld, devil would not be ableto enter that heaven at all.Sura 2. Ayat. 36. Fa-azal-la-homa Shitan-o an-ha fa-akh-raja-homa mim-ma ka-na fee-hey, wa qul-neh-bey-too, be’-zo-kum ley-ba’ zin adu-wuun, wa-la-kum. fil-ar-zey mus-ta-qar-run wa mata-un ela heen. ButSatan made (Adam and Eve)inbalanced and drove them awayfrom where they were (in restand peace) and said We, Get youdown (on the earth), from yousome will be enemies of othersand for you there is a stay for anappointed (fixed) time.Adam was infallible, a prophet,so one one cannot think ofAdam disobeying Godscommand of God to follow theProphets without questioning, hence if the Guide is likely to

fail, then there is hardly anychance of being guided ofaccepting the Command ofGod to follow the Prophets tothe letter. Because Nabi has tobe “Ma’-soom” (infallible) thisayat should be understoodthoroughly. One must know thereason for creation of Prophetsand its obvious that they werecreated to bring the humanbeing closer to theunderstanding of God and HisBlessings and guide them toachieving such a goal. Also theyare the live models and practicaldemonstrators of what theypreach. Their actions werenever ever found to contradicttheir speeches. Besides, humannature is such, that it does notrespect a fallible intellect andmust accept preaching’s whichare practiced too. Also ifProphets were not “ma’-soom”and human nature being whatit is, cannot then take benefitthrough such a “non-ma’soom”being, the purpose of creationof a Prophet, which is to bringhumans, nearer to the Lord andworship Him, is entirelydefeated. Hence there wasn’tany need to create prophets atall and if He created them, thenthey had to be infallible. And isit possible to create a Humanbeing who can remain freefrom all sins? The answercannot be, but “YES”. If so then, why should God not create aninfallible being to guide thehuman beings to the right Path.Intellect will accept the Sanctityof such a thought, that Prophets

and guides appointed by Godwill always be infallible.Hence since apparently itlooked like Adam was notinfallible that “Taweel” becomesnecessary as above. And itsinteresting to note that even innarrations” Adam is shown asinfallible, which further supportsthe intellectual conclusions. Some other ayats and Hadeesstates the infallibility of prophetsand guides. In Arabic language there are twotypes of orders, the positiveand the negative order like Thepositive is termed as “Amar” like“Amar bil Ma’roof” i.e. “DoGood” and the negative istermed as “Na hee” i.e. “Nahyaanil munkar” i.e. avoid evil. Nowlooking at the order of God toAdam the Ayat states “La-tak-raba ha-zey-hish shaja-rata”i.e. Approach not you two thistree. Its necessary here to findout whether Adam disobeyedthis “Nahee” or negative orderof God.Nahee are of 3 kinds.1. Nahee-e-Tehreemee.2. Nahee-e-Tan-zee-ee.3. Nahee-e-Irshaadee.The first is that negative orderwhich makes the doing of theaction “Haram” i.e. SIN. Thesecond and the third “Nahee”are such when the doing of theaction, if negative order hasbeen issued, is not “Haram” butis “Makrooh” i.e. not advisable. Now whether this Nahee underdiscussion is of the first kind orthe 2nd and 3rd kind.

Greater sinsLying is another sin which isclassified among the Greatersins. The famous scholar,Shaykh Ansari (r.a.) writes in hisbook, Makasib-e-Muharrama:“Common sense suggest lyingis haraam, all the revealedreligions also say so; particularlyIslam. The Quran is explicit inthis regard. The corpus of hadith(opinion of the majority of thejurists) verifies this tenet andreason also sustains thisassertion.”Lying is listed with the greatersins in the narration of Fazi IbneShazaan from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.).Lying is one of the greatestsins: A tradition from the HolyProphet (s.a.) declares,“Beware I inform you regardingthe greatest of the mortal sins:Associating anything with Allah, disobeying parents and lying!”(Wasaelush Shia)A similar tradition has beenquoted from Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.) also,“All the evils have been lockedin a room and its key is lying.”(Mustadrakul Wasael)Angels curse the liars: TheProphets (s.a.) of islam inanother tradition is quoted tohave said,“When a believer utters a liewithout a valid excuse, he iscursed by seventy thousandangels. Such a stench emanatesfrom his heart that it reachesthe sky and because of thissingle lie Allah writes for him asin equivalent to that ofcommitting seventyfornications. Such fornicationsthat the least of which isfornication with ones mother.”

(Mustadrakul Wasael)Undoubtedly, lying is the worstof sins. It is obvious that theevils of lying are more dreadfulthan those of adultery. Somefalse words lead to warbetween two tribes or twosections of the society. Somelies blight the honour ofthousands of people orendanger their lives, or lead toeconomic disasters. One kind of falsehood is thatwhich is attributed to Allah, theHoly Prophet (s.a.w.) or theHoly Imams (a.s.).Understandably this is the worstkind of falsehood. Often due tolying, innocent people are sentto the gallows and their familiesdestroyed. It is for this veryreason that the traditions state:“Lying is an evil, greater thandrinking wine.”Quranic verses denouncelying: allah the Almighty saysin Surah Nahl, verse 105:“Only they forge the lie who donot believe in Allah’scommunications, and these arethe liars.”And in Surah Zumar it ismentioned:Surely Allah does not guidehim aright who is a liar, ungrateful.” (Surah Zumar39:3)It can be understood from theverses of the Quran that a liarcalls for divine urse and invitesthe anger of Allah.A large number of Quranicverses and traditions condemnthe sin of lying and dscribe itsevil consequences. An interesting incident is foundin the book, Habibus says:Sultan Husain Mirza, the king ofKhorasan and Zaablistan, sent

one of his envoys to SultanYaqoob Mirza, the king ofAzerbaijaan and Iraq. Theenvoy carried with him booksand other gifts. The Sultan hadordered the inclusion of thebook Kulliyat-e-Jami in the setof books. It was a very popularbook in those days. AmeerHusain Abeeravi, the envoy, inhis haste packed the bookRutoohat-e-Makki Iinstead ofKulliyat-e-Jami. On reachingIraq, he found a hospitable hostin the ruler of Iraq. He wasasked, “You must have beenbored during this long journey?”The envoy replied, “Not at all!The Sultan has sent for youKulliyat-e-Jami. So wheneverwe halted, I read some portionsof it and passed my time.”Sultan Yaqoob was eager to seethe book. But, when he orderedfor it, it was not found to theembarrassment of the envoy. The king demanded, “Aren’t youashamed to utter such a lie?”The envoy says, “I left the courtashamed and returned homewithout a reply to my Sultan’sletter. I did not even halt or restduring the journey to Khorasan.I felt death would have beenbetter for me, rather thanuttering such a lie.”Aqa Rawandi has quoted alengthy tradition from the HolyProphet (s.a.) in his bookDawaat. The Prophet (s.a.)while describing the spectacle ofMeraj (Ascension) said.“I saw a man, who lay flat onhis back while an angel mountedhis head. The angel who wasstanding upon the head had apointed iron rod. He repeatedlyinjured the sleeping person. Theface of the victim was shattered

The existence of the Spring ofKausar if ound in the Qur’an andthe traditions, it is theabundance (Khayre Kaseer)which was bestowed on theProphet (s.a.w.). It is quoted in‘Basaerud Darajat’, “Ma’alimulZulfa”, and the third volume of‘Biharul Anwaar’ that Abdullahibne Sinan asked Imam Ja’far-as-Sadiq (a.s.) regarding theSpring of Kausar, Imam (a.s.)replied that its width isapproximately equal to thedistance from Basra in Iraq toSanaa in Yemen. Abdullahseemed astonished. Then ImamSadiq (a.s.) asked him.“Do you wish to have a glimpseof it?”He replied, “Yes O, son of theProphet!” Imam (a.s.) escortedhim oustside Madina, and struckhis foot on the ground. Abdullahsays that by the Imam’s orderthe veils of the unseen werelifted off my eyes. I saw astream flowing beneath, and theplace where we were standingwas surrounded by it. I saw thaton one side of the stream wasflowing water which was whiterthan ice, and on the other sidemilk, and in between wasflowing the “Pure Drink”(Sharabe Tahoora) coloured redlike rubies (Yaqoot). I havenever witnessed wuch abeautiful view before, nor wine(the wine referred to here is notthe usual intoxicating liquid, rather it is a pure drink reservedfor the believers in Paradise)flowing between water and milkImam (a.s.) said,“A is written in the Qur’an, that inParadise flows rivers of milk, water and wine, verily this streamflows from it. There are beautiful

trees on both sides of this river, and between the trees the‘houries’ of Paradise are standingwith their beautiful hair flowing inthe air, the likeness of whichcannot be seen in this world.”Then the Imam (a.s.) wenttowars one of the ‘houries’ andasked for a drink. The ‘houri’saluted Imam (a.s.) and filledthe cup with water from thestream and presented it to Him.Imam (a.s.) gave the cup to meto drink. I drank and wassurprised for I had never tastedsuch a delicious and tasty waterin my life, nor ever smelt suchfragrance of musk. I said, “Maymy life be your ransom, thelikeness of what I saw today cannever be imagined in my life.”Imam Sadiq (a.s.) replied.“Whatever you have seen isquite less when compared to theblessings reserved for ourShi’ahs. When anyone amongthem dies, their spirits stroll inthese gardens, and drink andbathe in these streams, and thusgain pleasure by consuming thedelicious fruits.” (Ma’ad)The Holy Prophet (s.a.) toldImam Ali (a.s.),“The Spring of Kausar flows frombeneath the high heavens. Itswater is whiter than milk, sweeter than honey, and softerthan ghee. Its pebbles are oftopaz (Zabro Jad), rubies(Yaqoot) and corals (Marjan). Itsgrass of saffron (Za’faran), andmud of musk (Mushke Azfar).”Then the Holy Prophet (s.a.)placed his hand on the side ofImam Ali (a..s) and said,“O Ali! This stream is for meand yourself, and those wholove you.” (Ehsanul Fawaed)For the following of Imam

Husain (a.s.) there is anadditional blessing. Imam Ja’far-as-Sadiq (a.s.) says, thatThe person who weeps on thesufferings of Imam Husain (a.s.)will be happy and contented onthe Spring of Kawsar, and willbe pleased after looking at it.Ali (a.s.) will be the ownerof Kausar (Saaqiye Kausar):The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) toldAli (a.s.):“O Ali! Verily you are the ownerof my hawz (Kausar).”It is related in ‘Khisaal’ of ShaikhSadooq that the Commander ofthe faithful, Ali (a.s.) said,“I along with my Progeny(Ahlulbait) will be standingbesides the Holy Prophet (s.a.w)near the spring of Kausar.Whoever wishes to meet usshould strive to emulate ouractions and worls. For everyhouse has some generous andnoble people. Intercession(Shafa’at) is surely there for ourfriends. Hence strive to meet usthere. For we shall drive awayour enemies from there and giveour friends to drink from it. Andwhoever drinks a sip from thatblessed water will never becomethirsty.”It is written in the ‘Saheeh’ ofBukhari that when some of thecompanions of the Prophet (s.a.)will be removed from the Kausar, the Prophet (s.a.w.) will say.“O my Lord! These are mycompanions.”Allah will reply,“You do not know what theydid after you. They spread falsetraditions and made changes inReligion (Bid’at).”This tradition is also quoted inthe ninth volume of the‘Saheeh’ of Muslim.

Tolstoy, Voltaire and Goethealso recommended andapproved with their mentallabour and imagination the samething which had been indicatedby Raphael in the image. However, Ali clarified thisconcept centuries ago. Hecampaigned against thearistocrats, the ruling class, theprofiteers and the selfishpersons, opposed their wrongand absurd way of thinkingabout the oppressed and said:“By God! I shall realize the rightof the oppressed person fromthe oppressor and shall pull theoppressor to the fountain-headof truth by putting a cavessorin his nose, even though hemay not like it”.

A glance over......Cont. from pg. 8

you see it quite clear whetherhe is a Muslim or not. Suchpeople who were commandedto reject evil judgment and theydeliberately follow it, and neveraccept the divine judgment yousee them very cautions byfollowing the constitution of evilrules, fearing only creatures andignoring the discipline of theCreator. You see them avoiding showingany proof that shows their beinginvolved in a particular case, even in writing. That is to getrid of the punishment in this life. The Holy Quran says in this fact:“Hast thou not turned thy visionto those who declare that thebelieve in the revelations thathave come to thee and to thosebefore thee? Their (real) wishis to report together forjudgment (in their disputes) tothe evil one, though they wereordered to reject him. ButSatan’s wish is to lead themastray far away (from theright).” (Verse 60, Chap. An-Nesa)They ignore every teaching orrule that opposed their capriceand fights their evil wishes, though they proclaim beinggood believers. Such

proclamations are toodangerous to the Islamicsocieties and bring insultationsto the religion. They are thepeople who reject the orders ofGod. They Holy Quran says:“O, ye who believe! Obey God,and Obey the Apostle and thosecharged with authority amongyou; If ye differ in anythingamong yourselves, refer it toGod and his Apostle. If ye dobelieve in God and the last Daythat is best and most suitablefor final determination.” (Verse59, Chap. An-Nesa)Islam invites Muslims to bejustful and to stand out firmlyfor God, telling the truth even ifthat brings them harm in thislife. And even if the case isagainst enemy or a non-Muslim.There is no difference in theIslamic judgments between aMuslim or non-Muslim for itsrules are infallible perfectlyfruitful. The Holy Quran wants peopleof doing wrong or having illegalrights or properties, and tellsthat God, is always well-acquainted with what we do. Atthe same time the Holy Quranencourages us to gain theforgiveness of God and His greatreward.

Divine Discipline ...................

Ibn Abbas narrates,When Hazrat Ali (a.s.) killed Amr ibn Abdewad, he came to theProphet (s.a.w.)with his sword still dripping with the blood of Amr.When the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.) saw Ali (a.s.) he said:”O Allah, give Ali some merits which you have not given toanyone else before him and thatyou will not give to anyoneelse after him.”So Jibraeel came down with a tangerine from Paradise. He toldthe Prophet (s.a.w.), “The Magnificent Lord sends his Salaam toyou and says, ‘Give greetings to Ali ibn Abi Talib with thistangerine from Me.’The Prophet (s.a.w.) gave the tangerine to Ali ibn Abi Taleb (a.s.)and split it into two halves. There was a green silk cloth in thetangerine that had the following written on it, ‘This is a present

from the Virtuous Lord to Ali ibn Abi Talib.’

Historical stories for childrenAfter the downfal l at thehated dynasty of Abu Sufyan,it was the Marwan family whocame to power. The Marwanfamily seized control of theMuslim government which hadbeen usurped previously byAbu Sufyan in the warsagainst the family of theprophet (s.a.). They thenproceeded to direct the affairsof the community in the nameof Islam.Marwan, whose son Abd al-Mal ik was noted for hisignorance and stupidity, wasl i t t le suited for theresponsibility of ruling. Hebegan a conflict with a mancalled Zubayr and after a reignof terror, killing and plundering,he extracted an oath ofallegiance from him and hisfollowers under the threat ofdeath. Likewise, among thefirst people to make a pactsupport with him were thetribes of Jordan, but only (asthey themselves admitted)for fear of being killed if theydid not accept.Marwan was known byvarious other names such as:‘the monkey’ ‘the lizard’ and‘the crocodile’. This despicableevi l man acquired thesenames because of the thinand sickly shape of his bodyreminded people of theseanimals; moreover, he usedto set out in search of theProphet (s.a.w.) and when hefound him, he stood andmade ridiculous monkey – likegestures. The Prophet of Godwould curse him and pray thatGod turn him into the verycreature he was apeing; thus

it was that he became afflictedwith the shakin palsy: withoutwarning, his whole bodywould suddenly begin totremble. There is a hadith (a saying)of the Prophet (s.a.) whichdescribes Marwan’s bodilyorgan as resembling a lizard. The noble Prophet (s.a.) hasdeclared that the lizard is afilthy animal and any personkilling one, should take a ghuslafrerwards (ghusl is thewashing of the whole body ina special way to purify oneselfspiritually and bodily). TheProrphet (s.a.) has alsostated that whenever one ofthe Banu Umayyah familydies, he changes after deathinto the form of a lizard orcrocodile. It is for this reasonthat people are reminded oflizards at the mention of anyof the Banu Umayyah family.

ABD AL-MALIKIBN MARWAN:The Cursed one

After the death of Marwan, hisson Abd al-Malik came topower. Before taking over theaffairs of government, he wasalways to be found in theMosque, praying or readingthe Qur’an. He was sodevoted in his worship that hebecame known as the ‘Doveof the Mosque’. As soon asnews reached him that hewas to succeed to thecaliphate, however, he closedthe Qur’an and said: “Farewell, from now onwards we are tobe separated from each other.Since it is now a question ofgovernment of the Muslims, Ihave no need for the din ofAllah {din is the Islamic code

for living which Allah revealedto his Prophet Mohammad(s.a.)} or the Qur’an.” Beforecoming to power, Abd al-Malikwould become angry i fsomeone were to kill an ant;but as soon as he took controlof the government, he spenthis life killing and torturing theMuslims. Indeed no matterhow many people he killed, hecould never satisfy his thirstfor blood. In this respect, hewas no different from hisforefathers. Even when Hajjajwrote to him informing himthat huge members ofMuslims and Shi’ahs had beenkilled, it made no impressionon his stony heart. One day a noble asked him,“O King! I have heard that youeven drink wine; is this to beexpected of the caliph andruler of the Muslims?” Abd al-Malik replied, “By God I swearit is true, but wine is nothingcompared to the blood whichI am fond of drinking”. Suchis the way of behaving ofthose who desire to rulemerely by force andoppression; such people willexterminate anyone oncethey consider to be anobstacle in their path – evenif it means killing their closestfriends or members of theirown fami ly. Abd al-Mal ikthought only about power andby what means he couldsecure and retain his controlover the government; henever considered the needs ofthe people or the country asa whole. Abd al-Malik wasshameless, tight – fisted andbloodthirsty and all his agentsand supporters resembled him

Contd from previous issue…..The story of Adam’s creation, falland restoration as related in theQur’an is an instructivecommentary on the biblicalaccount which the Qur’anaccepts in its broad outlines. When God decided to createAdam, He announced to theangels: ‘I am about to make avicegerent in the earth.’ Theangels protested: ‘Will you placein it one who would spreadcorruption in it and shed bloodwhile we proclaim your praiseand sanctify you?’ Then God toldAdam all the names, which maybe regarded as the first act ofdivine revelation to man inhistory. God then challenged theangels to name the things whoseidentities He revealed to Hisvicegerent, but they admittedtheir ignorance and sought God’smercy. ‘Praise be to you, we haveno knowledge save that whichyou taught us....’ Adam, who wastaught by God the art oflanguage with all its symbolism, was higher than the angels. Thusthey were ordered to prostratethemselves before him inveneration, not worship; they alldid except Iblis (Satan) whorefused and was puffed up withpride (2: 30-34).’ [7] In an interesting colloquybetween God and Satan, reported in the Qur’an, we seeboth the reason for man’sexultation and for Satan’s pride.God asks Iblis: ‘What preventedyou from prostrating yourselfbefore one whom I fashionedwith my two hands . . . ?’ Satananswered: ‘I am better than he;you created him of clay andcreated me of fire’ (38: 75). [8]Thus God expelled the arrogant

Satan from his presence andplaced Adam in the garden ofParadise. Adam, however, was made notfor Paradise but for the earth.God therefore gave Satanauthority over Adam and hisdescendants in order that theeternal battle between good andevil should rage on its legitimatestage, earth. Adam was temptedby Satan with eternal life, everlasting dominion and angelicexistence. He fell and was sentwith his spouse to the earth toexercise their true mission, God’svice regency. From the beginning, God createdthe human soul and inspired itwith its evil and piety (91:6-7).Thus man is as prone to evil anddestruction as he is torighteousness and good deeds. With this choice, however, go sinand repentance, and forgivenessand guidance. Adam did disobeyhis Lord, but then he receivedcertain words from his Lord andHe turned towards him, for He istruly relenting, compassionate(2: 36). Thus Adam sinned andwas guided back to God by Godthrough revelation. Adam wasboth the first sinner but also thefirst prophet. Every man andwoman thereafter carries in himor herself the same potential. Thisis not to say that every humanbeing is a prophet, but that thegoal of humanity is life with God.Nowhere more powerfully andaesthetically has this ideal beeninteriorized and presented thanin the lives and works of themystics, the friends (awliya’) ofGod, whom we call Sufis. It has already been observed thatevery human individual is born inthe state (fitra) of innate faith in

God as the one and only creatorand sovereign lord of all beings. What then, it must be asked, isthe role of the prophets in humanhistory? Their role is twofold, firstto remind men of their covenantwith God, or bring them back tothe state of pure faith. Man,according to the Qur’an, is aforgetful creature. The Qur’anwas sent, as were otherscriptures, from God as areminder. Indeed, one of themany names of the Qur’an is al-Dhikr (the remembrance). Thesecond task of the prophets, orto be more precise, the prophet-messengers, is to transmit divineprecepts or moral imperativeswhich are to regulate humanconduct. In Islam, this is knownas the shari’a, or sacred law. Islam distinguishes between aprophet and a messenger, andbetween these and the righteousfriends (awliya’) of God. Aprophet is one who receivesrevelation in dreams and by otherindirect means. He may be sentto only a few people and for aspecific purpose, or he may be aprophet in himself. In contrast, amessenger is one who receivesdirect revelation through anangel, or even more directly fromGod, as was the case withMoses. A messenger, in addition,is a legislator. Every messenger(rasul) is a prophet (nabi) butnot every prophet is amessenger. This is because themain distinction between the tworests not on revelation, but onthe promulgation and applicationof sacred laws based on revealeddivine principles. Among the 124,000 prophets, tradition asserts that there were313 messengers. The Qur’an

Revelation and Salvation

Page 23: Madinatulilm English Magzine Issue June2011

refers to eighteen, five of whomare known as ulu-al-’azm, ormessengers with power orresolve. These are: Noah, thefather of humanity after theDeluge; Abraham, the archetypalman of faith in the one God;Moses, the recipient of the Torah;Jesus, the Word of God and Hisspirit and the recipient of theEvangel; and Muhammad, therecipient of the Qur’an, the sealof the prophets and lastmessenger to humankind.Moses and Muhammad, however, occupy a special placein prophetic history because theywere prophets and statesmen. They did not simply transmit themessage; they implemented it inthe life of a socio-political order. Islamic tradition insists that Godnever left any communitywithout a warner, in order thatmen should have no argumentor contention (hujja) against Godafter the apostles (4: 165). Thequestion was inevitably asked:What becomes of humanity intimes of prophetic interruption(fatra), and even more seriouslyafter prophecy has ceasedaltogether? Several answers tothis question have appeared inthe form of minority sects inIslam, some of which, like theBahais, broke away completelyfrom the community. What maybe termed the ‘orthodox’ Shi’aanswer has been more or lesstolerated as a fifth way(madhhab) alongside the fourofficial Sunni schools. Based on a complex system ofQur’an exegesis and prophetichadith tradition, Shi’a Muslimsearly in the community’s historyposited another cycle concentricwith that of prophet hood andextending beyond it. This is thecycle of walaya, (authority orallegiance) or imamat (temporal

and spiritual headship) of theMuslim community. The imamsmust always be physical as wellas spiritual heirs to the prophets. With the exception of Jesuswhose first heir or vicegerent(wasi) was Simon Peter, theimam must be a brother ordescendent of the Prophet. Theimam may also be a prophet, aswas the case of Abraham. [9]But in general, the imamate ishigher than prophet hood andbelow apostleship. The imam isthe bearer of the knowledge of

the prophet whom he succeedsand by prophetic inheritance fromone prophet to the next, theimam is also heir to theknowledge of all previousprophets. His task is not topromulgate new laws, rather itis to interpret, safeguard andimplement the shari’a of theprophet of whom he is the heir.Like prophets, the imams mustbe protected (ma’sum) by Godfrom error. They must alsomanifest miracles as proof oftheir imamate.

The Greatest Discord in IslamHistorians are unanimous

that Ali (a.s)did not know aboutthe goings on at Saqeefa, or thatabubakr and Umar had beenthere to attend along with theiraccomplices till he heard theclamour in the Mosque with Umerwielding the stick demandingrecognition of Abubakr as acaliph. (Tabari : History-chapteron Saqeefa.) He sensed theirhostile attitude in that hour of trialfor Islam in its stronghold itselfand he continued to be theirfriend, relable and respectable asever. The most surprising fact isthat he was nether consulted inthe matter nor asked like othersto acknowledge Abubakr as aCaliph. He was just ignoredbecause they knew that peoplewill opt for him, hence theythought of consolidating theirown position before he graspedthe situation and present himwith a fait accompli. They tookadvantage of their being busywith the burial of Prophet whichthey did not attend since theyhad this serious matter in hand.Tabari comments: Aslam cometo acknowledge the caliphate ofAbubakr thereby the latter’sfaction became stronger”

implying that before that it wasweak and that there weredissenting voices even then.

Ali thereafter confined himselfto his house though people wereready to acknowledge him as acaliph and fight his opponents buthe kept quiet till Fatema (s.a.)died which was a relief for theopponents since he was now leftalone with people gravitatingaway from him as he was notclose to the centre of powers.

Once he met Abubakr and inthe presence of people said: “Youtrampled our rights and withoutconsent” (Masoodi) Abubakrreplied: Yes I know that but wewere afraid of discord” Writershave ignored the dialogues of thisnature under threat of reprisaland this prevented the facts fromcoming out. Ali (a.s.) mentionsin his NAHJUL BALAGHA “when Iconfronted Abubakr in thepresence of people he ignored itand left the place not knowingwhat to say.” Those who claimthat Ali (a.s.) acknowledgedAbubakr willingly are either, deluded or trying to deludeothers, since this matter wascleared when he himself becamethe caliph after twenty five years,of prophet’s death.

After hatching the conspiracy andachieving ultimate martyrdom of ImamHasan(A.S.), Moawiya startedcampaigning openly for the successionof his son Yazid to the office ofCaliphate. Until that time he had alwaysplanned in secret about this intention. To materialize his plans, he started hiscampaign among his most trustedpeople in Syria where he hadestablished his headquarters. Later on,his missionaries took the message toother parts of the Islamic world andwith the help of lot of money andbribery he got support for the caliphateof Yazid from a number of importantIslamic cities. After his death in Shabaan of the 60thHijrah, Yazid sat on his throne andstarted the campaign of getting Baiyatof all Muslims so that they wouldaccept him as the Caliph. Thematerialistic personalities of that timecame forward and accepted hiscaliphate. Among them were mostlythe people who were known for theirenmity towards the Ahl-e-Bait(A.S.)ofour Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W.).The other group was of the peoplewho were either coerced by force ortreachery or their loyalties were boughtthrough material offers. When the campaign crossed theborders of Syria, instructions weresent to the Governor of Madinah –Walid ibn-e-Aqba ibn-e-Abu Sufyan– as well to get the baiyat of ImamHussain(A.S.). According to somehistorians, Yazid also mentioned that ifImam Hussain (A.S.) declines hisbaiyat then Walid should kill him andsend his head to Syria. Walid invitedthe Imam (A.S.) to his court and gavehim the orders of Yazid and demandedhis baiyat. Imam (A.S.)replied “A

person like me would never accept thebaiyat of a person like Yazid”. In thisstatement, Imam (A.S.)gave a clearguideline for all the future time to come. One of the advisors of Walid namedMarwan bin Hakm incited Walid ongetting Imam (A.S.) killed right therebut Imam (A.S.)was joined by a fewof his followers from Bani Hashimunder the leadership of HazratAbbas(A.S.)and returned safely fromthe court.

Within a few days time, the politicaldevelopments made it very clear thatYazid is going all out to either obtainthe baiyat of Imam Hussain (A.S.)orto get him killed. Imam (A.S.)had thesanctity of Madinah as well as thesalvation of the religion of Islam in hismind, therefore, he decided to leaveMadinah and go towards Iraq. Heasked for the preparation of a Caravanof his selected family members and histrusted friends and set off for this longjourney on the 28th of Rajab. When Imam (A.S.)had made hisdecision to leave Madina, he went tothe grave of his brother Imam Hasan(A.S.)with a very heavy heart. Therehe stayed for some time talking to hisbrother saying “O brother now yourkillers are after my blood. It looks liketime for my martyrdom is near and Iam leaving you now.”. I imagine thatImam Hasan (A.S.)would have replied

from his grave – O my brother I bidyou farewell and give you my sonQasim to become your sadqa inKarbala. After that Imam (A.S.)went to thegrave of his grandfather, the HolyProphet Muhammad (S.A.W.). Hestayed there for a long time and wepta lot until he went to sleep. He sawthe Prophet (S.A.W.) in his dream andsaid to him “O my grandfather, mysalutations to you. The land of Madinahhas become small for me. Tyrantsamong your ummah are after my bloodand I am leaving Madinah with a heavyheart”.Finally Imam Hussain (A.S.) came tothe grave of his mother Hazrat FatimaZahra (S.A.). Historians write thatImam (A.S.) ran towards her grave justlike a child runs toward his mother andhe fell on her grave just like a childfalls in the lap of the mother. Imam(A.S.) said “O my mother accept mylast salam. I am leaving the land ofMadinah and would not come back. The prophecy of my grandfather isabout to come true”. I imagine that BibiZahra(S.A.) would have said from hergrave “O my beloved son, O the onewhom I have raised by keeping awakein the night, I would not let you goalone. From this day I would not restin my grave but I would accompanyyou throughout your journey.”Historians write that throughout thejourney various people reported toImam (A.S.)that when everyone goesasleep during the night, we hearfeminine voices of weeping and a Bibi’svoice crying “Ya Hussain, Ya Hussain”.Imam (A.S.) told them “O my trustedcompanions this is my motherZahra(A.S.)who is with me ever sinceI have left Madinah”.
