During the rotary movement ofthe nut, the internal surface of thenut meets with the rear surface ofthe ferrule to axially move theferrule forward into the angularsection of the fitting body. Theleading edge of the ferrule isdirected into the tube to begin therequired “bowing” action of theferrule.
Subsequently, the leading edge ofthe ferrule “locks” on the outsidediameter of the tube to completethe sealing action and secure thetube within the fitting.
The resulting “spring-like action”of the ferrule is designed to helpcompensate for exposure tosystem variables such as vibration, pressure pulsation and thermalexpansion/contraction.
QUALITY
SSP’s Quality System has beencertified to conform to the ISO9001:2000 Quality Standard.Achievement of this prestigiousstatus further confirms SSP’scontinuing commitment to qualitywhich is reflected throughout thecompany in its personnel, policies, equipment, products and service. In addition, all Unilok tubefittings are manufactured to thetechnical design specifications andrigid quality control standards ofthe SSP Instrumenatation Divi-sion.

Unilok Tube Fittings
DESIGN
Unilok tube fittings are designedand manufactured to provide areliable, leak-proof connectionin instrumentation and processtubing systems. Unilok tubefittings consist of three preciselymachined components:
1) Body2) Ferrule
3) Nut
supply timely, meaningful feed-back to the production team.Continual process monitoring andequipment control provide thenecessary manufacturing qualityfor Unilok instrumentation gradetube fittings.
PACKAGING
Unilok tube fittings are individu-ally bagged to assure the highestlevels of quality, safety andcleanliness. The protective bagseliminate contamination (tubingburrs, dirt, etc.) from entering thefitting prior to its use, and help toretain the integrity of the factoryassembled body, nut, and ferrule. As long as a Unilok tube fitting isin its original protective bag, it isidentified as factory new, com-pletely assembled and ready forinstallation.
The single ferrule design, with thespring-like action of the ferruleduring make-up, compensates forthe variations in tubing materials, hardness and thickness of the tubewall to provide leak-tight connec-tions in an extensive range ofapplications.
Additionally, in fulfillment of thedesign criteria, all Unilok compo-nents are manufactured withextremely tight tolerances andsuperior surface finishes underrigorous quality control standardsto assure the optimum perfor-mance of each component part.
OPERATION
Through the critical interaction ofthe precisely machined fittingcomponents with the process tube,a leak-tight seal is achieved. Thesimple geometric rotation of theUnilok nut provides the axialthrust necessary to coin the ferruleto the outside diameter of the tube.To eliminate any potential stresson an existing system, the tubefittings have been designed to nottransmit installation torque fromthe tube fittings to the tubing.
The individually bagged Uniloktube fittings are packaged inconvenient, small-lot quantitiesfor easy procurement and hand-ling.
Additionally, for efficient productidentification and storage, theboxes are color-coded to the tubefittings’ material of contstructionand have pictorial labels whichinclude the part number, productdescription and box quantity.
Finger-tight assembly dimensions (shown in inches) are for reference only and subject to change. When ordering, specify material designator with part number (see page 3 for complete ordering information).8
TEMPERATURE FACTORS
Unilok tube fittings functionreliably in applications rangingfrom cryogenic temperatures tohigh temperature bake out withthe tube fitting material as thelimiting factor. It is important tonote that elevated temperatureswill reduce the maximum workingpressure capability of the tubingsystem. (For more informationregarding the effects of tempera-ture on tubing pressure ratings, refer to Table 5 regarding tem-perature stress factors in SSP’sSelection Guide for Instrumen-tation Fittings and Tubing onpages 50-53.)
GAGEABILITY
Unilok tube fittings aredesigned, manufactured andquality controlled to be gageablefor sufficient pull-up during intialinstallation. See page 9 foradditional information.
INTERCHANGEABILITY
Unilok tube fittings are designed, manufactured and quality con-trolled to be totally “interchange-able” with the Parker CPI™ brandof tube fittings. Component bycomponent examination plainlyshows the two brands as com-pletely “component-intermixable.”The precision manufacturing ofboth products to stringent toler-ances under rigid quality controlprocedures ensures the safety, performance and reliability ofservice whenever Unilok andParker CPI component parts aremixed and used in accordancewith published installation andservice recommendations.
MATERIALS
316 STAINLESS STEELUnilok straight configuration tubefittings are machined from tube316 stainless steel cold-finishedbar stock in accordance withASTM A-276 and ASTM A-479.Shaped bodies are machined fromclose-grained 316 stainless steelforgings in accordance withASTM A-182. All 316 stainlesssteel Unilok components are heatcode traceable with certifiedmaterial test reports (CMTRs)available.
BRASSUnilok straight configuration tubefittings are machined from CA360and CA345 premium brass barstock in accordance with ASTMB-16 and ASTM B-453. Shapedbodies are machined from preci-sion forgings of CA-377 brass inaccordance with ASTM B-124.
PRESSURE RATINGS.
Generally, Unilok tube fittings arerated for pressures equal to themaximum allowable workingpressures of the tubing recom-mended for use with the fittings. However, it is important to notethat many specially designedfittings, bored-through fittings andfittings having AN, O-Seal andSAE/MS integral ends may havelower pressure ratings than that ofthe tubing. (See SSP’s SelectionGuide for InstrumentationFittings and Tubing on pages50-53 or contact your localAuthorized Distributor for moreinformation regarding tubing andfitting pressure ratings.)
Unilok Tube Fittings
Additionally, Unilok tube fittingsare considered able to be “func-tionally interchangeable” with theSwagelok® brand of tube fitting.“Functionally interchangeable”allows for the use of a Unilok nutand/or ferrule with a Swagelokbody, or a Swagelok nut and/orferrule system with a Unilokbody. The exceptional qualitycharacteristics of both productlines assure complete productperformance whenever the twobrands are “functionally inter-changed.”
LIFETIME WARRANTY
Unilok tube fittings are coveredby a published Lifetime Warrantyas printed on page 54.
TUBE SELECTION
Careful selection and specificationof tubing is essential to theperformance of a tubing system. When choosing the appropriatetubing material, size and wallthickness, consideration must begiven to the system’s environ-ment, pressures, temperatures andflows. (For more information ontube selection, please refer toSSP’s Selection Guide forInstrumentation Fittings andTubing on pages 50-53.)

*Tubing ends should be cut asstraignt as possible with all O.D.and I.D. burrs removed. Use of atubing cutter or guide blocks witha hacksaw is recommended.NOTE: For extreme system applicationsusing high pressures or requiring anextra factor of safety, it may be desirableto use a “common makeup startingpoint” to alleviate the inherent variationsin tubing diameters. Installation shouldbegin from a “snug” position, which isachieved by wrench tightening the Uniloknut until the inserted tubing will not movefreely by hand (approximately 1/8 turn). From this new “snug” starting point, continue with the recommended installa-tion instructions.
2. While holding the fitting bodystable with a back-up wrench, scribe the nut for a reference pointand wrench tighten the nut 1-1/4turns for sizes 1/4" - 1" and 3/4turn for sizes 1/16"-3/16". (SeeFigures #2 and #3.)

Additionaltighteningrequired.
The Unilok pre-setting tool isused to pre-set the ferrule on thetubing for subsequent installationin a fitting body. The pre-settingtool can be especially helpfulwhen an installation must be madein a tight space or hard-to-workarea. The pre-setting tool allowsthe major portion of the installa-tion work to occur in a morefavorable work setting with onlythe completion of the installationin the hard-to-work area.
PRE-SETTINGINSTRUCTIONS
1. Secure the pre-setting tool in avice.
2. Remove the protective nut, andassemble the Unilok nut andferrule loosely to the pre-settingtool. Insert the tubing through thenut and ferrule until it bottoms inthe pre-setting tool, and thenfollow the standard Unilok tubefitting installation instructionsfrom page 9. (See Figures #7Aand #7B.)
3. Loosen the nut and remove thetubing with the pre-set Unilokferrule and nut from the pre-setting tool. (See Figure #8.)Return the protective nut to thepre-setting tool.
NOTE: To extend the life of a presettingtool, lubricate the tool with a lubricantcompatible with the system’s tubingmaterial, environment and media. Also,at times, an oversized or very soft tubingmay tend to stick in the pre-setting toolafter make up. To remove the tubing, gently rock the tube back and forth.Never turn the tube with pliers or anothertool, as such action may damage thesealing surfaces.
GAGEABILITY
Each Unilok tube fitting compo-nent is manufactured with utmostprecision to provide the optimumperformance interaction of thecomponents during assembly.By maintaining such stringentmanufacturing tolerances, Uniloktube fittings are consideredgageable for sufficient pull-upduring initial installation. The
Unilok “Gap Gages” are designedto identify for the installer orinspector, prior to pressurizing asystem, that sufficient tighteningof the tube fitting has occurred.Gageability provides additionalreliability for proper installationand ultimate tube fitting safetyand performance.
UNILOK GAP GAGEINSTRUCTIONS
1. Follow proper installationinstructions (as supplied with thefittings, or published in theUnilok catalog).
2. After completion of the installa-tion instructions and prior topressuring the system, choose theproper size Gap Gage and try toinsert it between the fitting’s nutand body hex. (See Figure #10.)
4. Installation of the tubing, withthe pre-set Unilok ferrule and nutin the appropriate fitting body, cannow be made by following thestandard reassembly instructionsfrom page 9. (See Figures #9Aand #9B.)
3. If the Gap Gage will not enterbetween the fitting’s nut and bodyhex, no additional tightening isrequired.
4. If the Gap Gage will enterbetween the fitting’s nut and bodynex, additional tightening isrequired.NOTE: Parker CPI Inspection Gaugesmay also be utilized effectively withUnilok tube fittings.

Unilok tube fittings with weld ends allow weld system connection to tubing with the advantage of a leaktight seal that can be disassembled in an otherwise permanently welded system. Weld ends conform toANSI B31.1 and B31.3 piping codes. Welding precautions: Prior to welding, remove the nut and ferrule. To protect the fitting body threads and seat, cover with a plug or another nut. Position a suitable heat sinkto dissipate the heat. Insert the tube until bottomed in the socket, then back out approximately 1/16"before welding.Note: The welding of a bottomed tube may lead to stress-cracking of the weld. To hold the fitting in properalignment, tack weld the fitting in four places (90° apart) and then complete the weld. After welding, remove the protective plug or nut and replace with the nut and ferrule for tube installation following theinstructions from page 9.

O-Ring Seal Connectors
Unilok O-Ring Seal Connectors provide a leak-tight seal in vacuum or pressure systems having tapered pipeor straight thread ports and a smooth, flat seat surface perpendicular to the axis of the threads. (See Figures1-3.) To produce an effective seal, the connectors are manufactured with a precision groove that retains theO-Ring and prevents its extrusion from the sealing area. The connectors are designed to seal upon a raised, flat surface or with a counter bored or recessed hole. The following O-Ring Seal installation instructions andmounting dimensions chart should be helpful when working with O-Ring Seal Connectors.
O-Ring Seal Connector Installation Instructions
1. Lubricate the O-Ring with a lubricant that is compatible with the O-Ring material and the system’s mediaand environment. (Standard O-Ring material is BUNA compound, 70 Durometer. Viton and other O-Ringcompounds are available.)
2. Hand tighten the connector until the O-Ring begins to compress.
3. With a wrench, slightly snug the connector to compress the O-Ring to the port and achieve the seal.
4. When connecting or disconnecting tubing to the Unilok fitting end of the connector, always use a back-upwrench to retain the connector’s installed position.

TI
In general, Unilok tube fittings may be used with avariety of plastic tube materials without any specialpreparations. However, very soft-wall, pliable tubingsuch as Tygon® needs a tube insert for support prior toinsertion in the Unilok tube fitting. The standard Uniloktube fitting installation instructions (see page 9) arethen followed for proper make-up.

TEMPERATUREThe system’s operating temperature may affect theinitial choice of tubing material and may also affectthe maximum allowable working pressure for the giventube size (see Table 5 for temperature stress factors).
LIGHT GAS SERVICELight gases such as hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, etc.have extremely small molecules which can be releasedthrough the smallest of leak paths including tubingsurface imperfections or defects. To provide asuccessful connection for light gas service, the tubingmust have a thick enough wall to provide resistancefor the setup action of the ferrules to further compensatefor the tube’s potential surface condition. Tables 1-4show the tubing sizes and wall thicknesses recom-mended for light gas service.
HANDLING AND INSTALLATIONSurface scratches and gouges on tubing are a source ofpotential leaks. Some precaution when handling thetubing can help reduce surface scratches and maintainthe surface finish as originally intended by themanufacturer. Tubing should never be dragged acrossrocks, blacktop, pavement, or the tubing storage rackas scratches and gouges can occur. Sharp blades shouldalways be used in the tube cutters or hacksaws used tocut the tubing so as to provide a clean, square cut. Dullcutting blades can cause internal and external hangingburrs, and cause the tubing to become oval and affectproper insertion within the fitting. As a good handlingpractice, tubing should always be deburred prior to tubefitting installation to help assure easy and complete tubeinsertion. Additionally, for bent tube assemblies, it isimportant to bend tubing prior to installing tube fittings, and to provide a sufficient straight length of tubing afterthe bend to allow the tube to be fully inserted into thefitting. See Figure A and Table 7 on page 53 foradditional information. Also, to eliminate weight stressfrom the tubing upon the fitting and to provideadditional system support for vibration and thermalshock resistance, the tubing should always be supportedby tube hangers, clamps or trays.
SSP flareless instrumentation quality tube fittings havebeen designed and manufactured to provide reliableleak free connections in a wide variety of applications. The design characteristics of the tube fittingscompensate for many of the field variables involvedin the installation of the tube fittings and with thetolerances, wall thickness, finish and quality of thetubing. A reliable leak free tubing system will beachieved by combining the proper selection andhandling of tubing with the proper tube fitting selectionand installation. The following information is providedto assist in the tube selection process.
MATERIALThe tubing material chosen must be compatiblewith the system’s contained media, pressure andtemperature, as well as with the environment in whichit will be installed. Also, the tubing and tube fittingmaterials should be similar for optimum sealing actionto occur (stainless fittings for stainless tube, brassfittings for copper tube, carbon steel fittings for carbonsteel tube, etc.). The mixing and contact of dissimilarmaterials may leave the system susceptible to galvaniccorrosion and/or not allow proper tube fitting makeupto be achieved. Additionally, the tube fittings havebeen designed and manufactured to function within thehardness ranges allowed for similar tubing materialsby applicable ASTM specifications as referred to inTables 1-4.
PRESSURE AND FLOWThe size of the tube’s outside diameter (O.D.) and thenecessary wall thickness are determined by the system’spressure and flow requirements. Tables 1-4 detail thesuggested tubing sizes and wall thick-nesses for usewith instrumentation tube fittings. Additionally, thetables provide the maximum allowable workingpressures for each size of tube recommended for usewith instrumentation tube fittings. If no pressure isshown on the table for a particular size, the tube is notrecommended for use with instrumentation tubefittings. The tubing system should not be utilized abovethe tube’s maximum allowable working pressure;however, instrumenta-tion tube fittings have beentested as leak tight to the burst pressure of the tubingin all recommended sizes and wall thicknesses.
