We the French, have something that the world envies. The entireplanet has tried to work out the formula, some have even been tempted to copy

it, but no, no one has managed to quite decipher the mystery so far.

French style is the Holy Grail. Its a state of mind, a way of life, its this je-ne-sais-quoi that renders Parisian womenmore elegant than

New Yorkers, the capitals terraces more charming than Londons pubs, and theCote dAzur and its blue skies a unique part of the world.

Sorry, but a school where you can learn French style doesnt existany more than you can clone the Eiffel Tower or Ins de la Fressange! But the French know how to be generous (yes, its true) and thats

why were bringing you this special edition dedicated to French Inspiration. Acompendium of elegance with images of unrivalled French fashion, highlightsof the best cultural events (because for us style is synonymous with culture),

beauty tips for understanding how Parisian womenmanage to stay relaxed chic all at once. And because the French are snobs (a little quirk thats part ofour charm), weve also created a little guide to the forms of snobbery to adopt -very useful for meals out. You will also find a selection of unusual tourist sites.

Welcome. And thank you for inspiring us so powerfully.

    THINKPIECE

In fashion studios and workshops, the present meansnothing more than the forthcoming collection.Autumnwalks on summer catwalks, spring inwinter. The current year only makes sense in the yearto come which is to be built. The number of clothing

designs having spread under the influence of an arroganteconomic system, the phenomenon of inspiration thrivingon vintage fashion has become widespread. However, thatsort of nostalgic claim of recent, half recent or long goneperiods has not been quite accepted yet. Everywhere theword past, the imperfect tense frightens us. It keeps atbay a clientele keen on this innovation syndrome whichhas won other disciplinary fields such as design, art, architecture, literature, and so on. Everywhere throughoutexhibitions or shows, where they are too rarely forbidden, screens, devices and phones take pictures, plunder andvandalise the present time. That excess of simultaneity, which is motivated by a sense of immediate sharing madetactile surfaces judges. Oddly enough, for it wants so muchto seize the moment, the screen alienates all our skills toappreciate it. The eye can never rest without an interface onthe subject. Hard drives and memories are weighed downunder the digitalised stocks of a stillborn present. Blogschatter and jabber, but do not tell anything. Some longtelescopic rods have flooded the public space.

Theyre used as a mirror by thosewho live and watch themselves live. Erasure, ageing, disappearance are scary terms. Archive is a word takenon in our language and daily practice. The past is abstract, hidden under the digital formats of our computers. Thehard copies and silver films have once and for all fled fromthe shoeboxes in which we used to keep our lives withlavender-scented bags. The fax paper, which was inventedin the last century, grows pale. The ink disappears. Theyreturning blank again. The past is now decorative wallpaperput on a sandy partition.

In interviews, theword modern has never been usedsomuch to describe an era, which suffers fromnot beingmodern enough. A flamboyant seamstresswhoseworkwas essential in the history of contemporary fashion oncecasually said to a younger yetmore arrogant seamstress: Iam a creator, youre creative. This era is creative. Extremelyinventive. Art (taking all sources together, be it artistic, choreographic or literary) is an object, which is submittedto its own combustion, for it isway too requested andstimulated. The aesthetic economy of thought is overriddenby the one of ideas. The reason being that the tools ofcommunication dedicated to an excessive production ofgoods thatwere once artistic but have nowbeen domesticatedand consumedwhile being looked at, havemultiplied. Letsswitch off the present and invent the future.

ven though Im Russian andlive in Moscow, every time Icome to Paris I feel at home

and I instantly get a relaxed feel-ing of well-being. Also, I come herewhenever the opportunity arises. Forinstance, FashionWeek is the ideal ex-cuse for me to travel to Paris. I would

never miss my turn. When in Paris, Ialways have to stop for dinner at LesBouquinistes, Michelin-starred chefGuy Savoys restaurant on the banksof the Seine. What a treat. Paris is un-doubtedly Frances jewel in the crownand for me, Place des Vosges is themost beautiful square in the world, but

alongmy travels Ive discoveredother regions that have wonmeover. Im a firm believer in the

saying, Great honours are greatburdens, so I decided to let myself

be seduced by the discreet charm ofmicro-seaside resorts such as Dinardor Trouville-sur-Mer, even if my secretgarden is elsewhere in Lower Norman-dy. I love to spend romantic weekendsat Bagnoles-de-lOrne; theres a specialotherworldly peacefulness to it. Beinga fashionista at heart, my inspirationcomes mostly from Parisian womensstyle; people like Marie-Amlie Sauvand Jane Birkin have a stunning look.Womens natural elegance mixed withthe ancestral savoir-faire of great fash-ion housesmake Paris the indisputablecapital of fashion. And how sumptuousit is! I always leave Francewith a heavyheart Thats why Ive got used to fill-ing my luggage with little souvenirswhen I come over. To fly without myJolle Ciocco face mask, Pierre Hermmacarons and Vieux Garons jars ofjam from Christine Ferben is unthink-able; or the multitude of little vintageobjects from Clignancourt flea market.I just love to get lost in there!

grew up in China where theworld is made up of Chineseand foreigners. To the Chinese,

all foreigners are either first-world orthird-world, either rich or poor. Thatsabout it.Then I met a Frenchman and marriedhim. The first thing he taught me wasjoie de vivre. He pointed out very clearlythat, as a Chinese-American, I workedtoo hard. I was missing out on life.Life, he would say, is for living, notfor working. I was very impressed, Irealised the French are very different

to Americans. I began to drink wine, eat cheese, and bask in the sun, in-stead of sitting in the shade coveredin whitening cream. The French, Iwould say to my Chinese and Ameri-can friends, know how to live. I alsorealised that the French and Chinesehave a lot in common. For instance, they hate speaking foreign languages.Often I findmyself being the only non-French speaker at a table, and I mightas well be a fly on the wall. The French

will all continue to speak French. Its the same in China; the Chinese, even when they can, hate to speakanother language. Unfortunately, this shared characteristic did notdo wonders for a Franco-Chinesemarriage. Another common trait isthat both the French and the Chi-

nese love to complain. When I was inFrance, I listened to hours of criti-cism about cheap Chinese trufflesand garlic. When I returned toChina, I would hear about Frenchattitudes, passport control, the

passport checks at Louis Vuitton,or even the Air France stewardesseswho ask to check boarding pass ifyoure Chinese when you try to returnto your business-class seat from theback of the plane. French and Chinesecultures are both very domineering, which did not make for marital blissin my case. Neither of us would evergive in to the other.Sometimes, when the smog is verythick in Beijing, I dream about being inFrance. I start to think about the bouil-labaisse my ex mother-in-law wouldmake; I think about the turquoiseMediterranean Sea, the drifting aro-mas from pastry shops, the wine andthe cheese...I findmyself rememberingstatistics, like the fact that more than50% of Paris shops exist only in Paris, and nowhere else in the world. Ivestarted reading books like DebordsTheSociety of the Spectacle and Pikettys Capitalin the Twenty-First Century. And now, evenwithout a French husband by my side,I often say to my fellow Chinese: life isfor living, not for working.

One of the things I likemost aboutliving here (Ive been in Paris for about adecade) is the talent for noticing and de-scribing things. For instance, ordinary, educated Frenchmen often talk about

Its not great pro-nouncements about life that impressme; its everyday observations, often onones own emotional state: the motherwho says she wont have another childbecause Im at the limit of my com-petence, the doctor who tells me hesgoing through a process of internalnegotiation over his girlfriends death.Other such moments are aesthetic.

me to wonder how she feels about herhusband.Im not sure where this Frenchtalent originates. Maybe its acquiredat school. Maybe it comes from cen-turies of parsing the qualities of winesand sauces. Or maybe its the Frenchsromantic nature; Im told Frenchmencan name the varieties of love with theprecision that Eskimos describe snow, although it certainly doesnt makethem happier than the rest of us. TheFrench are also exquisitely skilledat describing failing marriages andmidlife crises. Je confondais le plai-sir et le bonheur (I confused pleasurewith happiness), a man in his fiftiessaid in Psychologiesmagazine. But I thinkthat being able to name even difficultexperiences makes life more of a nar-rative, and less of a mess. It means youcan elevate smallmoments, andmaybeeven remember to repeat them. At thevery least, it leads to what we Ameri-cans call mindfulness the simplepleasure of knowing whats going on.

arion Cotillard is like amyth but shes very muchin touch with reality.Shes like ameteorite, cross-ing the star-studded cine-matic sky, without satellitesobstructing her path. The

French actress and Hollywood stars international careeris unique. This morning, she welcomes us into her home onPariss Left Bank. I dont live in Los Angeles, she sayswrily. In the lounge,Marcel, her four-year-old son, asks hismotherfor a kiss then dashes off to play with his toy elephants. It isnot the glamorous Dior muse we have before us, but MarionCotillard, both thefilmstar andmother. She takesoffherVejas(environmentally friendly trainers) and sits downon the greysofa. Her face is so expressive that it captivated JamesGray andChristopher Nolan due to its melancholic beauty, opalescentcomplexion, and eyes that turn navy blue in the light.Today, the actresss diary is fuller than an ambassadors.Since she won an Oscar (for La Vie en Rose she was also re-cently nominated for the Dardennes Two Days, One Night), hercareer has gone from strength to strength. In the US, she ischerished which isnt too strong a word and is lookedupon as the spirit of France incarnate, although she hasachieved the impossible: obtaining roles usually reservedfor American A-listers. Today she doesnt seem to be scaredof anything. She plays Lady Macbeth alongside MichaelFassbender (in Justin Kurzels Macbeth), has been cast in As-sassins Creed the cinema adaptation of the cult video game and will soon start filming Nicole Garcias Mal de Pierres. In the meantime, she will play the lead in Joan of Arc at theStake, an oratorio by Arthur Honegger, at the Lincoln Centerin New York in June. Heres our encounter with the prodigy.MADAMEFIGARO Jan Welters photos in this issue again, re-veal your extraordinarily photogenic looks. How do youfeel about Marion Cotillard, the beauty symbol?MARIONCOTILLARD I have a very mobile face, very variableand shifting. Its perfect for film, but I am not the epitome ofbeauty; its not that difficult to make me look ugly. I reallydont knowhow to talk about beauty, or the beauty that peo-ple attribute to me. When people meet me, no one thinks,Shes gorgeous. Im not defined by my appearance. Imnot Monica Bellucci, whos so spellbinding that its probablyinfluenced her life and her relationships with others. Withactresses, I like particular, radiant appearances. Like AnaGirardot. Or Meryl Streep. I think Penelope Cruz is sub-lime, Jessica Chastain too; I love redheads. Angelina Jolie, whom Ive met a few times, is stunning but her beautys a

bit too dazzling. Do you knowwho I think ismind-blowing?Charlotte Casiraghi. The first time I had dinner with her, Icouldnt take my eyes off her. Of course you need the intel-ligence, simplicity, vivacity and kindness to go with it. Thesetranscend and enhance a persons beauty.

Americans say that you radiate the photogenic qual-ity of the stars from Hollywoods golden age. It would betruer to say that they havent yet offered me a role whereIm stripped of anything unnatural; perhaps inThe Immigrantby James Gray, where I wore very little makeup, but thatsa bit different, it was a period drama. However, in Two Days,One Night, my character, Sandra, confronts life bare-faced.That was one of my most beautiful and unique experi-ences. With the Dardenne brothers, it went beyond trust; itwas harmonious, even fusional. In another genre, I reallyenjoyed being in Rust and Bone by Jacques Audiard. That wasmy sexiest, most sensual role. A radiant girl, the kind I like.

Do you have any regrets about your exceptional career? That I didnt get to film with Patrice Chreau. His deathbroke my actress heart, I felt enormous grief. I thoughtabout the experience, which I had so often dreamed aboutand would never have. His film Intimacy is my favourite, atrue masterpiece.

How do you manage the whirlwind success that hasswept you up since La Vie en Rose, and all the constraints itimposes? I try to do the best that I can. I lead quite an unu-sual life, but in this unusualness, Im lucky enough to expe-rience a lot of joy. I have nothing to complain about.

As a woman, have you achieved a sense of fulfilment? Not yet. An actress is a very peculiar animal! When I startedout, I couldnt live with this need for recognition and thedesire to be liked. I deal with it better now, but Im still farfrom no longer wanting it, and fromwisdom.

But isnt it natural to want to be liked? To be liked, yesof course, but the need for recognition is pathological, im-possible to satisfy completely. And Im always scared ofdisappointing. This insecurity, which all actresses have, sometimes creates tension. Ive had a lot of recognition, more than I could ever imagine. But no award can reallysatisfy that need; lets say it gives fleeting confidence. Onlyby working on yourself to find the origins of that need, canyou finally overcome it.

What soothes you? My nearest and dearest. And peoplelike writer and environmentalist Pierre Rabhi, an altruistand one of the most beautiful people in my life.Joan of Arc at the Stake, Lincoln Center, New York, 10-13 JuneLady Macbeth, released in France in November 2015

aroline de Maigretis living a fairytale; How to Be Parisian

Wherever You Are (1), the tongue in cheekguide book she wrote with three girl-friends, is already a hit, to be releasedworldwide this year. As the books am-bassador, shes either in and out ofmeet-ings, on the road for Chanels Mtiers dArtcollection, posing inwomensmagazines,or giving interviews with a relentlessnonchalance - afterall, the Parisienne isan oxymoron. The lean Parisenne with her strong-willedchin and long tousled hair evoke a draw-ing by Kiraz or a photograph by HediSlimane. Shes classy, a little quirky andanxious, with awild look in her shy eyes. Her charming flaws are, for her career,

the same as Lauren Huttons diastema orVioletta Sanchezs haughty nose; its likean unforgettable signature. However, thecherry on top, is her warm and friendlymanner. In fact, be it in fashion, music, cinema, or chick-lit, everybody loves her- fairly rare for a Parisienneworthy of thename. Portrait of a girlwhoknowshow tostand out.Her clear-headedness is refreshing andis reflected by those in her entourage. Iknow Im not that easy on the eyes, myface is a bit too much; big mouth, bignose, big teeth, its an unusual face. Oneof my ancestors was a Native American,an Iroquois...For a fewyears, I livedwithaboy who used to call me My endangeredbeauty. He would say, By a couple ofcentimetres, youd be screwed! I foundthat verypoetic and I fell in lovewith it...Shes got aristocratic blood, but doesntmakea fuss about it. Onmyfathers side,my family goes back to the fourteenthcentury and my mother is Michel Poni-atowskis daughter. Caroline de Maigret

could also add that hermaternal grandfa-therwas aminister during the presidencyof Valery Giscard dEstaing, that she her-self is a countess, and that one may runinto her famous ancestor, Prince Poni-atowski, in Tolstoys War and Peace dur-ing the battle of Borodino (Poniatowski...met Tuchkov there barring his way, Book III).But shes far too well-mannered to pointthat out. She shrugs off the subject withan evasive reply, I prefer Chekhov! Herupbringing has allowed her to this day, tosail through life rather smoothly. Eitherway, shes more of a peacekeeper thana troublemaker and knows how to keeptiresome people at bay, Manners makelife sweeter. They foster a sense of socia-bility andgiveone this tremendousabilityto put a protective distance between one-self and the others if need be.

    HER MODELLING CAREERIS DOUGHNUT SHAPED

Shes a rocker, a mod and above all, amocker (to parody Ringo Starr). At 15,I was angry at bourgeois conformism.I started going to concerts, listening tomusic that shook the walls! I loved hardrock, punk; bands like Alice in Chains. Iused to mosh to death. When I arrived inNew York, hung up about being a model the dregs of the Earth I started to hangout with musicians, learned how to playmusic and, when I returned to France, Ilaunched a small indie record label, Bo-nusTracksRecords,withmyman,Yarol.Today, Yarol Poupaudwrites for themov-ing French septuagenarian rockstar John-ny Hallyday - and Miss de Maigret nolonger moshes, although she sometimesDJs at VIP parties. So rock chick, so cool.Hermodelling career is doughnut shaped, round with a hole in the middle, andis no longer the focus of her life. At 20,a student at the Sorbonne, I was eager tobe financially independant, and becom-ing amodel was the fastest way to gettingthere, though I had never read a fashionmagazine before. I arrived at the end ofthe supermodel era and at the beginningof the waifs, those pale kittens with bigwatery eyes. I wasnt pretty enough to bea topmodel and too healthy to be awaif. Ididnt do drugs and Iwasnt crazy enoughto be a cover girl. It worked fine, but Iwasashamed of what I was doing. Being as-sessed and scrutinised infuriated me, soone day I ditched it. Hence, the dough-nut. Today, striking a pose for Chanel orLancme doesnt give me a complex an-ymore, on the contrary, its light-heartedand relaxed; they takemy picture, I workfor brands. Her eyebrow-skimmingfringe is becoming as iconic as Betty Ca-

trouxs platinum blond fringe. When Istarted in the fashion industry, 20 yearsago, people told me I would look moreinteresting that way. I refused to get mynose done but I gave in to the fringe. It hasbecome my camouflage! Very useful forcovering frown lines! She also has something in common withWinston Churchill: she absolutely hatessports. No sports then, even if she isaware of thephysical andmental benefits.Ill get back into sports next year. In themeantime, I walk a lot, I went organic formy son, and I quit smoking five monthsago for the same reason.

RAISEACHILDWHOWILLDOGOODTOPEOPLE,NOTALITTLEMONSTERFor her, passing on moral values to herseven-year-old son Anton (named afterthe author ofThe Cherry Orchard) is impor-tant. He is growing up in a world that Ifindmore andmore difficult to live in; itscompetitive, selfish, terrible. It is my re-sponsibility to raise him as someonewhowill be good to people, not a littlemonsterwho only cares about his own success. Ireckon hes off to a good start. For now,hes sweet and generous. She worshipsher mother-in-law, Chantal Poupaud, who was Marguerite Duras film pressagent and documentary producer. Shegave birth to two amazing artists, namelyMelvil, the actor, and Yarol, myman. Ourrelationship goes further than a simpledaughter-in-law/mother-in-law rela-tionship. She is a fascinating and inde-pendent woman who taught me a fewessential things about maternity and theimportance of encouraging curiosity inchildren. Yarol is interested in everything

and is naturally in tune with his femi-nine side - hes even more of a feministthan I am! Mymother-in-law has an ex-emplary connection to her own age andfemininity, and decided she would nevergive up. Giving up means getting old. Shedoesntwant tobe left behind, so shedoesthe rounds of gigs and exhibitions, she senthusiastic, and looks 15 years youngerthan she is -without Botox!Caroline likes to admire women, de-spises female rivalry and advocatesbenevolence. In our book, theres anode to Simone de Beauvoir, Veil, Signo-ret; strong-minded and active womenwho changed womens lives or simplywere the epitome of a woman in love, like Signoret, but I also love CharlotteRampling; she has a smart beauty, itsimpressive. On a different note, I likethe avant-gardists such as Misia Sert,Dora Maar, Gabrielle Chanel, Lou An-dreas-Salom. She succeeds by caring.Im part of the NGO Care (2). At 20, onetries to find oneself. At 30, one works foroneself. At 40, one can start being altruis-tic. In fact, at the beginning of the year, she went to India to film a documentaryabout the education of young girls from arural area. Digging a well at a school al-lows girls to bring water home and learnhow to write. It can change lives. Hasshe ever held a camera? Never, but Imhard-working, I have an obsessive fear ofdeception, and Im too respectful of peo-ple who trust me, not to work. All in all, what is a Parisienne? A girl who alwayshas the last word, but makes you thinkthat she doesnt, a girl whose motto is:how to be yourself, but better! Afterall, whowould knowbetter?(1) Co-written in English with Anne Berest,Audrey Diwan and Sophie Mas - Ebury Press.(2)www.carefrance.org

MADAMEFIGARO Does the infamousParisienne really exist?CAROLINEDEMAIGRETYes, but she isalso a dream for many. However, onething is certain, she would prefer to beliked for her personality rather thanher cleavage. What is so typical about her?Hernonchalance, her detachment fromfashion, her restraint, she is almostboring. (Laughs) She doesnt want tolook like a frivolous woman althoughshe has lots of little secret codes thatmake her beautiful and sensual.Which ones? Shes spontaneous, although she spends an hour doingher hair and makeup. As a result, she

looks as if shes just got out bed, but itsdiscreetly sexy. As for style, she goeswith a strong piece of clothing ratherthan buying anything according tofashion trends. She always favoursthe cut and material. Her talent? Sheknows what suits her.Does she have flaws? Yes, she smokes, thats why shes so slim. She goes out,she drinks, she sometimes forgets tobe the perfect mother, but she acceptsher flaws and lives with them. Her wardrobe essentials? Chanelslittle black jacket (it brings a touch ofclass to every outfit), a black leatherjacket (perfect over tuxedo pants), amans white shirt (with sleeves rolled

up to the elbows), a real pair of heels(no in-betweens), Derby shoes orsneakers.According to you, who embodiesher best?Thewomen around SergeGainsbourg: Jane, Charlotte, Lou.He turned them into real Parisians.Josphine de la Baume and JoanaPreiss are also beautiful ambassadorsof Parisian style.Who are you favourite fashiondesigners? Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel. He can make any woman beautiful. Ialso like the grace and chic of HaiderAckermanns designs and AnthonyVaccarellos sexy outfits whose strictcuts avoid the pin-up clich.

TWISTEDBUNTo protect dyed hair from UV rays drying effects, try the Nina Ricci look by wearing your hair ina small tight bun at the nape of your neck. Mini-bun:twist your hair into a ponytail and then wind it into abun. Knot: make a side parting, divide your hairinto two sections, then tie them into a double knot.Tuck in any loose ends and fasten with hairpins.

PROTECT YOUR HAIR: wet your hair witha heat-resistant primer (cream or spray) and combthrough evenly. Hairdressers Invisible Oil by Bumble& Bumble (available from Sephora) is packed withhydrating oils and UVA-UVB filters. It softens, detanglesand protects hair, leaving it shiny and frizz-free.Oud Royal Thermal Protection Spray by Philip B: thislight and sensual perfumedmist is rich in protectiveamino-acids. CC Crme by Krastase Soleil has a pearlytexture that tames frizz, protects colour and injectsceramides in just one application, leaving hair silky.

MINIMALISTSLICK-BACKCreate a slicked-back style on straight or straightened hairwith awet-look base. To get the look, apply a sun protectionoil or an antioxidantmaskwith a golden shimmer (likethe excellent La Soif de LOrmask byMyriamK) directlyto the roots and comb through. This creates an ultra-hipcontrast between glossy roots andmorematte lengths. For a designer touch, add a thin patent ormetal headbandtomake a horizontal parting (try H&Mor Topshop).

EVENING TREATSMOOTH AND REPAIRGet rid of any sand or salt with a restorative shampoo, then applya leave-in treatment to towel-dried hair. This will protect your hairand allow the active ingredients to work overnight, leaving hairsilky smooth. For dry or dyed hair, go for a nourishing day mask.If its curly or brittle, apply an intensive leave-in mask. Using afine-tooth comb, make a central parting and smooth your hair backbehind your ears. If needed, add somemask cream to the lengthsand tips these are the areas that get most dehydrated.

TAMINGMASKS: La Crme, Opalis: we love its almondfragrance and the fact that it hydrates hair immediately,so theres no need to wait. Moroccanoil masks contain argan oil,a key ingredient for damaged or frizzy hair, and come in threedifferent nourishing formulas (light to intensive). Masque ternit,Iluxe Saint-Barthlmy: an organic cream for coloured hair madewith ultra-nourishing oils (iluxe-saintbarthelemy.com).

FOLKBOHEMIAN BRAIDSA braid is the perfect style for longer hair. Im bettingon the loose braid making a comeback, says hairstylistDavid Mallett. Try a classic three-strand or an eight-strandfishtail braid, worn to one side or in a crown around thehead. To give the hair texture, I suggest spraying a littlesaltwater all over before styling. Once youve finished thebraid, pull out a few strands to avoid it looking too severe. As its summer, dress it up with an accessory, Davidrecommends. Why not slip in a splash of colour colouredthread, ribbon, silk scarf or dyed streak or somethingby hair artist Marisol, who has a range of hand-braidedaccessories (including slides, headbands and clips) in acidcolours especially great for the summer, available fromLa Tresse Parisienne (latresseparisienne.com).

SALT SPRAYS: these clear sprays contain saltwater togive hair texture and volume, like youve just stepped out ofthe surf!Theyre great formaking straight hairmore tousled, taming curls and giving limp hair more volumewithoutweighing it down. SEXY

WATERNYMPHThe trend for wet-look hair is practical and easy to followin summer, when our hair doesnt have time to drybetween dips. For a tousled look, use a sun protectionoil to enhance and prolong the glossy effect. These oilscontain UV filters, protect hair from chlorine and salt, and give it shine. Theyre simple to use just spray ongenerously right through to the tips (the dullest and mostfragile part of your hair), then comb through.

After doing our 8,000 steps per day,the 21 muscles, 31 joints and 7,200nerve endings in our feet are cryingout for help. And once summer arrives,60% of French women no longer dare

take off their shoes. Whether theyreGreek or Egyptian shaped, or big orsmall, we can all keep our feet sweetby paying them a littlemore attention.

    IM ASTILETTO QUEEN

    LISTEN TOTHE FOOT GURU

Barefoot king Bastien Gonzalez, the founder of the foot and hand care brandRvrence de Bastien, has persuaded celebrities and princesses to kick off theirshoes. This foot hygienist says we should care for our feet just as we look afterour teeth. Heres some of his advice forwomenwho cant livewithout their heels. In the evening, spend at least 10 minutes walking barefoot and take a few stepson your heels to stretch out your calves. Every evening, stretch and separate your toes, pushing them down beforemas-saging the fat pads with a moisturising lotion to keep the cushion soft. You dont need to be a chiropodist to give yourself a great foot massage. Usinga cream, knead the heels and pads of your feet with your thumbs, pressing inthe centre of the arch to stimulate circulation and around the nail matrix, thenstroke upwards from the ankle to the calf, always towards the heart.

fit the arch of your foot. If it doesnt, then all your weight will be pushedforward. Before buying a pair of shoes, feel inside with your hand for anyseams or finishes that could hurt yourfeet. Always keep an emergency pair ofpumps with you.Look straight ahead as you walk for-ward this opens up the chest andcompletely changes your gait.Dont cross your feet one in front ofthe other when walking as a rule ofthumb, your legs should remain hip-width apart. When taking the stairs, position your-self slightly sideways on, like a crab.
