We work with underpriviledged children living in orphanages, shelters and poor homes. We work with children from Std 5 to Std 10

in the age group of 8 years to 15 years.

We follow a stringent due-diligence process before starting operations in a centre. A city team must complete a Centre submission

form ensuring the following before starting operations in a centre.

Children are in the specified age group

Fixed days and timings allotted to meet requirement of 2 sessions of 2 hours each per week for minimum of 7 months in

a year, ie minimum 112 hours of classes in a year.

Availability of required space to conduct sessions.

Space for library and computer project and bandwidth to expand to other MAD projects.

Commitment from the centre authorities regarding attendance of students and required number of sessions in the year

Page 7: MAD Annual Report

At the beginning of the academic year, the core teams assessed and finalized the centres to be included in the project. This included existing centres and new centres brought under the MAD project. A major recruitment drive was conducted in each city at the beginning of the year to meet the volunteer requirements in each of the MAD projects to be conducted in the city in this year.

The following are the MAD Projects taken up in the year gone by:

English Project – conducted in Cochin, Pune, Nagpur, Delhi, Chennai, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, Mangalore, Bangalore, Mumbai

ENGLISH PROJECT

This is MAD's primary project and is conducted in every centre that we engage with. The English Project  is a 5 year – 5 level curriculum

to teach Communicative English, including assessment at each stage to gauge improvement. A curriculum focused on Listening, Speaking, Reading

and Writing was developed by EZ Vidya. This covered conversation, vocabulary and comprehension. The syllabus was aimed at maximizing the

efficiency of untrained, inexperienced teachers keeping in mind the profile of the students. In addition to the syllabus, volunteers went through

three levels of training.

Process training: covering the administrative aspects of their roles

Teacher training: covering class management, learning styles and multiple intelligence

Syllabus training: on interpreting and using the syllabus

LIBRARY PROJECT

Library project: In order to increase the children’s exposure to the English language and also to encourage reading, MAD is taking up library

projects in centres where we teach. Books are specially selected to cater to the different proficiency levels of the children, and also include

vernacular books. Library projects have been completed through donor sponsorships and book drives. This project is currently active in Cochin.

This year this project was implemented in 2 centres:

St Mary's: through donor sponsorship

awards are instituted by iCONGO- Confederation of NGOs – a

Public-Private-People partnership in association with other

partners from industry, media, government, students, SMEs and

other sectors as a part of the Right every Wrong Movement. These

awards seek to celebrate and inspire social responsibility, justice

and action initiatives and are held every year on 26 November,

the day the Indian Constitutional Pledge was signed.

Indiya Shines Award: Nearly 70,000 people visited the

Greatnonprofits.org website and 3,500 stakeholders posted

Since our incorporation in 2006 we have raised INR 21,26,000. In the first two years of operations, we did not have any

specific sponsors and it was just volunteers and people associated with MAD who made personal contributions. This year, a company called

Zoho.com is supporting us by providing INR 9,00,000 (USD 21,000).

Our fundraising methods are as follows:

MAD Patron: Zoho.com is MAD’s first National Patron, they funded Rs. 9,00,000  in support of our national budget.

Friends of MAD (FoM): Community involvement based model where individuals contribute through monthly subscriptions starting

at Rs100 per month. We currently have close to 300 FoM donors across the country.

We also invite individuals and institutions to take up specific centers’ costs for a year by providing them the per child cost.

Besides this, we have had a lot of support from the local communities where we operate, through friends and families of

volunteers and well-wishers who have supported us with the various projects we have undertaken.

16

Page 20: MAD Annual Report

The MADapp is an online web-based application, which connects all volunteers across the country It serves various purposes in

MAD: first as a volunteer management tool, it tracks every volunteer, his attendance, the chidlren he teaches, their progress, events being

conducted in a city, anything thats going on in MAD; second, as a real-time report generator: it provides reports which help track the progress of

projects; third, as a social network for like-minded youth, it facilitates a youth movement.

MAD believes volunteers are capable of doing its core activities provided they are well trained and coordinated. By approaching

teaching as a standardized and localized process, we can now for the first time reach out to more children faster and without compromising on

quality. Technology integration reduces redundancy and dependance on staff and infrastructure  to follow up and manage volunteers by providing

real-time information and automated report generation on the progress of a child, a center or a city.

Every volunteer in MAD has a position of responsibility, either to teach a specific group of children, or to organize camps and

awareness programs for them, all of which are tracked. City level co-ordination is handled by volunteers themselves. The MADapp generates a

Live-Progress-Report that lets us track the progress of every child in the MAD program, the operational efficiency of every city and the overall

vital stats of the organization on a daily basis. MADapp routinely tracks and monitors every activity that happens in MAD.

1. SYLLABUS In the coming year MAD will be using the ENGLISH FOR SCHOOLS curriculum, an International Series for teaching English, published by Cambridge University Press. This is a 5 level program, with each level covering 100 hours of classroom sessions. The Levels are as follows:

StartersLevel 1:Level 2:Level 3:Level 4:

Additionally we plan to conduct the following assessment tests to gauge the students progress through the course of the program.: Starters, Movers, Flyers, KET, PET, FCE. Cambridge University Press is MAD's Knowledge partner. They are providing teachers books, students books and workbooks at a highly subsidized cost for the MAD project.

2. TRAINING From our experience last year we have seen the importance of effective teacher and syllabus training for volunteers. The following is our training plan for this year:A Chief trainer has been identified who will identify trainers in all cities and create training formats which will be followed by the trainers.

The teacher trainer will conduct a 2 day teacher training program at the beginning of the year for batches of 30 volunteers. An additional mentor training program will be conducted for mentors, ie volunteers who will provide ongoing support and training to a group of volunteers assigned to them. This will be followed by a class visit by the TrainerBased on the inputs from the class visit the trainer will conduct a half day refresher training program. Program format is prepared by the Chief TrainerMentors will conduct class visitsMentors will conduct a half day refresher training based on class visit feedback. Program format is provided by the Chief Trainer.

3. FOCUS ON OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY  Nearing 800 volunteers and close to 2000 children, 4 projects across close to 45

centres in 10 cities. In order to continue growing without compromising the quality of our projects, we will focus on two areas:

Very stringent monitoring and review mechanism to ensure the efficiency of the MAD project in every centre where we

operate

Reach out to more young people and get access to the best volunteers.

A full-time resource is being put in place to continuously monitor every city's progress and provide support and ensure that

every child is benefiting from the program. A detailed review mechanism focusing on vital parameters in each MAD program will be

reviewed every month.

We will also invest time and effort in promoting MAD nationally in order to attract the best volunteers to teach the children, and donors

who believe in our cause to support the project.

4. DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP WITHIN MAD MAD operating model is unique because it gives a lot of leadership opportunities

to volunteers. The entire operations of MAD are run by volunteers. Every year, a new core team is elected at the City level and National

level to lead MAD Operations for that year. This team will undergo administrative and leadership training to  empower them to run the

organization effectively.

Page 30: MAD Annual Report

5. PLACEMENT PROJECT AND RESOURCE PROJECT IN MORE CITIES THIS YEAR This year all cities are taking up

the Placement and Resource projects. Placement projects will include camps, awareness programs, field trips. Resource projects include

Libraries and computers for the centres where we teach.
