Teacher’s Notes

ObjectiveRaise students’ awareness of time and expand their vocabulary.

Suggested Procedure

• Write the word TIME on the board and ask students the fi rst thing that comes to mind. Accept all reasonable answers.

• Dictate the words DAY / YEAR / WEEK / MONTH and have students write them in their notebooks. Write the fi rst letter on the board if necessary.

• Write on the board:

1 _____________ = 12 _____________ = 52 _____________ = 365 _____________

(answer: 1 year = 12 months = 52 weeks = 365 days)

• Students copy in their notebooks and answer in pairs. Correct with whole group. Call their attention to the use of plural in days, weeks, and months.

• Give each student (or pair) a copy of the Worksheet. Students complete the Crossword Puzzle in pairs. Correct with whole group.

• ALTERNATIVE / EXTENSION

Ask students to create equations like the one above, using vocabulary from the Crossword Puzzle. See how many they can create in 2 minutes. Accept all correct answers. Some suggestions:

▄ 1 century = 10 decades = 100 years

▄ 1 hour = 60 minutes

▄ 1 day = 24 hours = 1,440 minutes

▄ 1 week = 7 days = 168 hours

You can vary the level of diffi culty of the activity by setting rules. Some suggestions:

▄ All equations have to involve minutes (or years, or days, etc.).

▄ All equations have to have 2 (or 3, or 4) equivalences.
