“Our investigation indicates that there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position," Irv Miller, a group vice president for Toyota Motor

"The possibility of this happening is very rare," says John Hanson, a Toyota spokesman.

Steps Toyota Owners Should Take

1. Determine if your model is on the recall list. 2. Floor-mat Problem: Call dealer to have accelerator pedal

reshaped or replaced. Have floor-mat replaced with newly redesigned mat or have the cost of the floor-mat reimbursed to you.

3. Accelerator Problem: Call dealer to schedule a free maintenance check and repair of accelerator pedal.

4. If you're on the pedal recall list and don't notice any accelerator problem, relax and wait for the company to send out letters about when to set up a dealer appointment.

5. If you bought your car between Jan. 21 and Jan. 26, there's a possibility you can return your car for a refund.
