With limitless energy and enthusiasm, Dune is probably one of the most upbeat people you’ll ever meet. They call him Smiley, but after hearing his life story of incredible danger and strife, one has to wonder how Dune Nguyen was ever able to smile again. But this MacEwan University Business Continuing Education and Corporate Learning trainer brings optimism and passion, along with a wealth of knowledge and experience, to the classroom.

At age 13, Dune made the unbelievably courageous decision to leave war-torn Vietnam and make his way to a country thousands of miles away. His journey included seeking shelter in two Indones-ian refugee camps as one of the “boat people” in the early 1980s. He learned early on what true hardship was and found a deep ap-preciation for each day of his new life in Canada.

Looking back at Dune’s career path, you could tell at an early age he was focused and driven. In grade 10, he was already a paid computer programmer and continued on as a software developer until the mid ‘90s when he decided to move into corporate training, project management and business analysis. He worked with clients from all across North America and remembers his most exotic locale as Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2006, he founded his own leadership and management advisory firm based in Edmonton.

But Dune wasn’t always just working; he also accumulated an im-pressive list of credentials including a Master of Business Adminis-tration, a Project Management Certificate, an Advanced Graduate Diploma in Management and a Diploma in Computer Systems Technology. He is also a Certified Management Consultant (CMC), an Information Systems Professional (ISP) and a Project Manage-ment Professional (PMP).

When asked what drove him to earn so many designations, Dune replied, “Everything I do, I go deep in there. I can’t live without constant learning and while I don’t believe credentials are every-thing, I do believe they are relevant. And I just didn’t want a lack of certification or formal education to be limiting in any way.”

In 2010, Dune was looking for more flexibility in his work sched-ule and the ability to reach more people. Teaching was a natural progression for him and he immersed himself completely as he had done with his previous career choices.

“I am passionate about people,” states Dune, “and I love the di-versity of the participants in my courses.”

Dune found a way to inspire and impact more people by instructing many courses through MacEwan Business Continuing Education. His vast knowledge and practical experience in leadership, project management and business analysis has allowed him to help de-velop the curriculum for some courses.

Dune also instructs for the new Business Analysis professional development certificate, a recent addition to MacEwan University’s

Business Continuing Education department. Business Analysis is a relatively new discipline, but one that Dune feels very strongly about. “Organizations need to clearly understand their business requirements and priorities,” states Dune, “and business analysis is crucial. I am grateful that the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA), established in 2003, has helped significantly advance the visibility and professionalism of business analysis throughout the world in just ten years.”

Business Analysis professionals are proficient at defining busi-ness requirements, recommending solutions, and helping improve organizational effectiveness. “I predict that in ten years, there will be more Business Analysts than Project Managers.”

There’s no reason to doubt his prediction just as there’s no reason to doubt that in ten years Dune will still be the same highly motiv-ated, personable, grateful person he is today. His teaching style is a reflection of his personality and one can’t help but be drawn into his circle of optimism.

Dune’s former students can attest to his infectious enthusiasm. A Basics of Business Analysis student wrote, “Dune is extremely knowledgeable and highly focused! His teaching style is very professional and direct. He kept everyone captivated with his well honed teaching skills.”

So what does such a well-educated businessman and instructor do in his spare time? Plays guitar of course. Dune can be seen at local venues strumming and humming tunes. With a constant de-sire to learn new skills in all areas of life, Dune has recently started writing and performing original songs.

But that’s only when he’s not spending time with his wife and two sons. This busy, self-made businessman and teacher will always find time for the things that are most important to him, just as he al-ways finds time to be grateful for the opportunities he’s been given.

Renaissance Man Business consultant, trainer and so much more… Dune Nguyen

“ “I predict that in ten years, there will be more Business Analysts than Project Managers.

Don’t let procrastinationhold you back!By Fern Richardson, MBA, CED, PHEc

We all do it. We put off starting or finishing a task that seems boring, overwhelming or just not as important as the million other things on our desks. Then we end up feeling guilty, discouraged or in a panic to get it done. Here are some tips to help break the gridlock of procrastination and help get you moving.

• Start. Do one small task to get you going.

• Break it down into manageable tasks. Develop a step-by-step action plan.

• Set a time limit. For example, set aside 10 minutes for a task. After 10 minutes you may want to do more.

• Start with the toughest item first. It’ll be done and won’t hang over your head.

• Tell others you are going to tackle the job. Public commitment helps.

• Make a list of what you are putting off and why. What steps can you take to deal with these items?

• Plan a procrastination day to focus on getting those things done. Of course, remember to reward yourself at the end of the day.

• Put your goal setting skills into action.

Grooming Students for Success in Business

Joe Cairo, President of M.C. College

The salon business is tough. It’s highly competitive, incredibly hands on, and follows trends so closely it’s difficult to keep up.

As a salon owner, you have to be super creative, maintain your own client base, provide marketing and promotions for your shop, apprentice new staff, operate a retail product section, provide professional development opportunities, calculate a complicated payroll and remember to pay the power bill. Most stylists would agree this was not what they anticipated when they entered the industry.

M.C. College has been training salon and spa professionals since Frank Cairo bought the business as Marvel Beauty School in 1975.

Frank Cairo was a stylist and a born entrepreneur. In 1955, Frank arrived in Canada from Italy and immediately started to work in a salon. He was 16 years old. Three years later he purchased his own salon.

Frank’s entrepreneurial spirit lead him to eventually own a chain of eleven salons, ten in Edmonton and one in Jasper, Alberta. He was a very hands-on owner, a trait he carried into the training programs with Marvel. He knew a high percentage of hair stylists open their own businesses and he introduced business skills as part of the curriculum.

Frank’s children, Joe and Dino bought the Marvel enterprise in 2000, rebranding as M.C. College Group. The school has

continued to provide quality instruction for salon and spa profes-sionals, with expansion into fashion design. Providing the business curriculum component, however, has always been a goal at M.C. College. The Cairo’s knew it – but what to do?

A chance meeting between Joe Cairo and MacEwan University business instructor, Frank Saccucci, provided the answer: course development and delivery from MacEwan University School of Business Continuing Education and Corporate Learning.

The business experts at MacEwan University developed the ‘Salon/Spa Entrepreneurship’ course specifically for M.C. College Group. The course was created in consultation with salon owners, industry experts and the M.C. College education director. Diane Emberg, Academic Coordinator at the School of Business, describes the process… “The method we use is called a DACUM, short for Develop-A-CurriculUM. It’s a consultation process that’s pretty involved, starting with data collection, then a focus group of select MacEwan University faculty, M.C. College instructors, and salon industry professionals. We sit down together, identify the core needs, then validate them through an industry survey. In this case, we sent the survey to 125 salon/spa owners in Alberta and B.C.”

The resulting five-day course is delivered on campus at MacEwan University. The course is hands-on and students finish with a prepared business plan. “About a third of the students can see themselves owning and operating a salon pretty immediately. When they leave the class they’ve got a document almost ready to literally take to the bank,” states Frank Saccucci, the School of Business faculty member who initially met Joe Cairo and now instructs the course. “We touch on every aspect of a new busi-ness, from start up cost projections, to marketing, to a loan amortization schedule. It’s a very involved and heavy skill-building week, with people who often don’t have a business background at all.”

Feedback from the course is extremely positive, with students commenting “I enjoyed the class more than I thought I would.” “The instructor had a lot of interesting and fun ways to help us learn so it wasn’t boring.” “I also feel this course was extremely

The project has been a win-win for M.C. College and MacEwan University. “The M.C. beneficial and taught me a lot about running and opening my own salon.” Students also comment on the experience of coming to the MacEwan University campus, noting that it adds a different, more business-oriented dimension to the learning experience.

“We think this program not only creates better prepared salon owners, it also creates better employees,” states Joe Cairo, President of M.C. College. “Many students walk through our door dreaming about entrepreneurship. This course helps them get more realistic about their goals, and more understanding about what it takes to be a salon owner. That reality check helps them to better comprehend both the big picture and help out with the day-to-day challenges.”

The project has been a win-win for M.C. College and MacEwan University, Business Corporate Learning. “The M.C. College part-nership is a great example of MacEwan University reaching out into the community,” states Elsie Elford, School of Business Dean. “Over the years, the School of Business has designed curriculum to suit business needs for a variety of niche-markets. With this example in the salon industry, we provided not only our business expertise, but our consultation and assessment abilities to create a truly relevant curriculum.”

Customized curriculum is nothing new to MacEwan University. MacEwan’s Business Corporate Learning department has been providing professional development and customized training services to businesses for years. “Our first step with a new client is a needs assessment. What are their business challenges? Where do they see a skills gap?” states Ratka Janjic, Senior Manager, Business Continuing Education and Corporate Learning. “We then draw on the expertise and industry experience of our instructors and offer professional development and customized training options to align with their business objectives. We even offer a suite of online courses – whatever is the best fit for that client.”

The MacEwan University Business Continuing Education department offers professional (or personal) development courses, certificates and professional accreditation in a variety of skill areas. If you or your organization is looking for professional development courses or workshops, either in class or online, check www.MacEwan.ca/Business/CE, or call 780-497-5207.
