For generations, MacDermid Enthone Industrial Solutions has been at the forefront of creating new standards for advanced surface preparation technologies for the world’s most critical metal and plastics finishing applications. Examples include hexavalent chromium and cobalt-free anti-corrosion finishes for brake calipers and fasteners. Our recent technology developments, such as our dark satin decorative chromium for exterior trim and lead / cadmium-free wear resistant coatings for power train, address environmental issues.
PERFORMANCE MATERIALS
Cars and chromium have been linked together for decades. Reaching its peak in the flamboyant styling of the 1950’s, chromium wheels, trim and accents have historically been used by car designers to help impart a distinctive look to their cars. With the move to lighter vehicles, plastic replaced much of the metal trim. MacDermid Enthone chemists were the pioneers of plating on plastic for decorative automotive applications and for decades ‘bright chromium plate’ was the finish of choice. Extensive choice of color, gloss levels and Electrolac UV enables designers to deliver a contemporary coating onto both plastic and heat sensitive substrates. This coating can be applied over bright and satin nickel.
ZINC-NICKEL FINISHESZinc-Nickel finishes, at 12%-15% nickel by weight, are widely used for both interior and exterior applications. Enviralloy and Kenlevel zinc-nickel systems are optimized for applications such as brackets, brake calipers, door strikers and latches, fasteners and fluid transfer tubes.
TOPCOATS AND SEALERSAll fasteners need to meet a designed maximum proof load. Creating the correct torque-tension relationship allows designers to achieve maximum joint security without exceeding the proof load of the fastener.
Zinc and zinc alloys demonstrate a relatively high and variable coefficient of friction. This can adversely affect the torque-tension properties of fasteners. If fasteners are used without friction control fluid, the increase in friction results in lower bolt tension for a given torque, resulting in a joint weakness, which leads to poor clamping, insecure joints the possibility of premature bolt fatigue failure. Conversely, too much can lead to bolt fracture and thread stripping. These factors become even more crucial in safety critical applications, such as wheels, seat belts, steering and suspension component systems. The solution is lubricated topcoats that provide both a lower friction coating than simply metal to metal joints and also ensure more predictability, avoiding too low or too high clamping forces.

Film Insert Moulding (FIM) is a versatile and cost effective method of decorating and manufacturing plastic parts. It is an advanced form of In Mould Decoration (IMD) or In Mould Labelling (IML). To begin, the flat film is reverse decorated (normally screen printed), then optionally formed, cut and finally back injection moulded.With FIM you can easily integrate components such as lens and body into a single unit using just one piece of our formable hard coated film.

Fototex 3D uses a hybrid cure technology (solvent and UV) that creates an incredibly hard, abrasion and solvent resistant finish that exceeds the latest OEM specifications.
Extreme durabilityOur unique hard coated films offer excellent hardness, abrasion and chemical resistance. The films are reverse printed thereby protecting the decoration without requiring spray painting or any other post mould process. Our films meet the specifications of the automotive, appliance and telecoms industries.
Automotive Todays markets expect a smooth, high quality finish to the surface area of car interior trim and decorative parts. At MacDermid Autotype we can deliver these finishes with our FIM processes and XtraForm, a formable, hard coated polycarbonate film with a deep, high gloss finish. Designed to be UV cured, these provide maximum formability, with scratch and chemical resistance. The durability of the surface produced makes for an attractive long lasting quality component. Telecoms MacDermid Autotype hard coated films can be used for In Mould Labelling (IML) to create lenses, housing and keypads and even offer the possibility of integrating the housing and lens, for example outer casings for mobile phones.
