  • 4What started 100 years ago as a small family business has grown into one of the largest and most diverse mechanical contractors in the mid-state. In fact, more than 65% of H.B. McClures $37.5 million business is commercial in nature, something of which many central Pennsylvanians are unaware.

As an award-winning commercial mechanical contractor, H.B. McClure Company is sought after not only for its wide range of self-performed services, from engineering to service and maintenance, but for an unparalleled level of accountability, schedule adherence and cost management. The H.B. McClure team is as adept in a plan/spec or a design/build environment.

The H.B. McClure team begins adding value at stage one: effective collaboration with general contractors, architects, and owners to ensure timely delivery with lasting value is the norm, not the exception. The team includes two on-staff, licensed professional engineers, who are also LEED AP design professionals, and 12 LEED Green Certified Field Technicians. Services include pre-construction consultation, engineering assistance, energy efficient systems, building automation systems, HVAC, plumbing, service and maintenance, and sheet metal fabrication. H.B. McClure is equally responsive with retrofits and renovations as with ground-up design/build projects.

    Depth, Breadth and Unparalleled Experience

No job is too large or too small for the H.B. McClure team. In addition to commercial mechanical contracting specialists with decades of experience, H.B. McClure can pull from a total team of over 200 employees and a fleet of more than 100 service and installation vehicles.

    Trust, Quality, Valuesince 1914

The Customer-focused Philosophy behind H.B. McClures Commercial Mechanical Contracting Division

This depth of resources dramatically improves H.B. McClures ability to perform as-promised, on time and within budget. Thats why many design-build customers go on to become H.B. McClure service and preventive maintenance customers.

H.B. does not limit itself to large jobs that need expansive resources. The company also works with smaller customers and projects. Its not unusual to see the H.B. team working on a boiler installation in a local church.

H.B. also supports commercial customers with a robust service department that provides as-needed service as well as cost-saving preventive maintenance contracts.

From Nursing Homes to Schoolsand All Possibilities in Between

Whether its installing a new medical gas system into an existing healthcare facility, designing and installing a new heating and cooling system for an office facility or retrofitting an aging, inefficient HVAC system with a high-performance geothermal system for short-term payback, there is no type of job from which the H.B. McClure team turns away. Over the years, H.B. McClure has excelled in almost every industry such as colleges, hospitals, sports facilities, distribution centers, industrial buildings, computer rooms, clean rooms, churches, shopping centers, multi-family housing units, and senior care facilities.

Our clients consider our past experience, but ultimately, why they choose us is due to our overall philosophy and proven results, said Jim Saussaman, Vice President, Commercial Division, H.B. McClure Company. General contractors, owners, architects: they all know

    2014 BUYERS GUIDE PROFILE

  • 5H.B. McClure as the company that uses innovative approaches to get the job done correctly the first time. Weve met incredibly pressing deadlines, successfully installed the impossible-to-install, overcome budget-busting challenges while maintaining the budget time and again. Its part of the culture that has always existed at H.B. McClure. And every employee takes great pride in upholding the promise and the reputation weve painstakingly built for the past 100 years.

Standing Proud on 100 Years of Trust, Quality and Value

Trust, Quality and Value is the promise behind every H.B. McClure job regardless of size. Since becoming an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) in 2010, keeping the promise has become even more important for each of H.B.s 200+ employees.

We live the promise every day, said Robert Whalen, President. Its not something we say. Its something each of us conveys in every customer interaction and in our internal behaviors as well. Becoming an ESOP just formalized what our founders envisioned in the first place H.B. McClure is a family-owned business. Employees are family. They are accountable for helping customers experience our promise and they take great pride in that fact.

    Leading the Way in Geothermal

In the 1970s, H.B. McClure became one of the first mechanical contractors to install geothermal in central Pennsylvania. Forty years later, H.B. McClure is still an undisputed expert in geothermal installations and service for both commercial and residential applications. H.B. McClure has geothermal systems installed in over 1 million square feet of commercial buildings from New York to Maryland.

The H.B. McClure team also helps businesses replace inefficient, traditional heating systems with high-efficiency geothermal systems. H.B. McClure can identify and access a geothermal source and install the necessary new mechanical equipment. H.B. McClure often couples geothermal heat pumps with other energy-efficient systems such as Energy Recovery Ventilators, Building Automation Systems, In-floor Radiant Heating and more.

Our goal is to do the best job we can on every job, said Robert Whalen. Were not out there looking for just the biggest jobs. We want to bring our value to every job. Whether its a 10,000 square foot retail renovation or installing solar panels on a multi-family unit for a regional housing authority, the H.B. McClure team gives 100% attention to detail, delivering flawless quality.

Adopting New Technologies to Deliver Higher Customer Value

Leadership within H.B.s commercial division excels in its ability to balance customer needs with emerging technologies.

We are constantly evaluating and incorporating new approaches designed to make the process smoother, more cost efficient and longer lasting for our customers, said Jim Saussaman. When we are working with a customer during the up-front planning process we talk about the long-term vision and plans for the facility. Thats when we help identify technologies and systems

that can save time and money, either during the planning or construction process or during the actual facility operations.

Just as H.B. McClure led the way with geothermal in the 1970s, they also became an early adopter of Building Automation Systems in the 1990s. Making buildings work smarter to reduce costs is just one of the few ways in which the H.B. McClure team helps companies drive down costs while improving efficiency.

Today, H.B. McClure uses BIM (Building Information Models) during the planning process for all design/build mechanical contracting projects. BIM technology depicts building plans in 3D, linking together multiple systems and data points to identify in advance any potential problems. This intelligence is used to problem solve before problems actually occur. The result is faster time to market and improved budget adherence.

The H.B. McClure team is also helping commercial customers drive down on-site construction costs by pre-fabricating assemblies in H.B.s 80,000 square-foot facility. Recently, H.B. replaced a complex mechanical device for Penn State University with an understanding that downtime to accommodate installation had to be minimal.

To meet the requirements, H.B. fully fabricated and assembled the parts in their warehouse, removed an external wall, loaded and shipped the device to Penn State and successfully installed the new device well under the specified time allotted. Not only does this capability reduce costs, it minimizes a customers downtime.

Expect to see much more of this pre-fabrication approach from us in the future, said Jim Saussaman. Clients are under pressure to reduce costs and avoid downtime. Pre-fabrication helps us meet customer demands without compromising service.

    Looking to the Future

As H.B. McClure continues to master technologies that streamline the planning and installation processes, the leadership team will continue to evaluate new technologies that reduce time-to-payback and increase the lifetime value of installed systems.

One thing that wont change at H.B. McClure is the family and community oriented culture that has been in place since its founding in 1914. At H.B. McClure, each employee is empowered to identify and rally support for its own chosen charity or community group. With more than 200 employees, its no wonder that H.B. McClure is known for its generous spirit.

H.B. continues to grow both by adding new clients and by acquiring regional companies that reflect H.B.s service model. Most recently, H.B. McClure added Lancaster, Pa-based Henry Mechanical. The acquisition is designed to further extend H.B.s commercial refrigeration offering and improve their ability to service businesses in Berks and Chester Counties.

With 100 years behind them are the 212 current H.B. employees excited about the future?

Absolutely, said Bob Whalen. As long as we continue to focus on the Trust, Quality and Value that kept us growing for the past 100 years, were confident well be here to keep central Pennsylvanians warm for the next 100 as well.

    Craftsmanship Awards

Dont miss this unique opportunity to honor your craftsmen and display the high level of workmanship your company produces.

The Craftsmanship Awards, as part of the Celebration of Excellence Annual Awards Night held each March, honor the men and women directly responsible for the outstanding work performed, rather than only the company behind the project. This is the 42nd year for the Craftsmanship Awards where more than 600 construction professionals have received these awards.

Each year, MABX members nominate craftsmen for their awards. The nominations are sorted into the following categories:

Educational Institutions Healthcare Residential Roads, Infrastructure & Bridges Industry Community/Public Service Commercial Green-LEED Certified or Green Globes Certified Green-Not LEED or Green Globes Certified Miscellaneous/Special Projects

All nominations will be assigned to a financial subcategory within each category based upon the estimated value of the nominated work. The Celebration of Excellence Committee then reviews the nominations and evaluates the work completed by the craftsmen on the project. Winners will be determined based upon the overall highest scores within their nominated category and financial subcategory. There is a maximum of three winners per category and they must have a minimum score of 20 points to receive an award.

Nominations may be made by a registered architect, registered engineer or any member of the MABX for work within all trades. In order to be eligible to nominate a craftsman for the 2015 awards, the project must be completed between August 31, 2013 and August 30, 2014. The nomination deadline is September 5, 2014.

    Safety Awards

In addition to the Craftsmanship Awards, MABX honors excellence in safety to companies who provide a safe and healthy working environment. One company from each of the nine categories is chosen based upon their annual safety performance. 2014 will mark the 7th year for the safety awards program.

    Craftsmen of the Future Awards

Since 1995, MABX has also acknowledged the future of construction by recognizing over 60 high school seniors for outstanding accomplishments in their selected vocational trades, awarding over $50,000 in tools over 19 years to support their future professional aspirations. To be eligible for the award, the student must be a current high school senior participating within a construction-related program. The student is selected by the vocational-technical school based upon their exemplary performance.

For more information on the requirements for all of these awards visit midatlanticbx.com.
